PARISH NEWS
CHURCH of the RESURRECTION
Nr. 8 (3060) February 22, 2015
1st SUNDAY OF LENT - B
On the first Sunday
of Lent, the Gospel
reading is about Jesus'
temptation in the
desert. This event in the
life of Jesus is reported
in each of the Synoptic
G o s p e l s — M a t t h e w,
Mark, and Luke—but
not in John's Gospel.
This year we read Mark's account of this
event.
Mark tells us that Jesus was led into the
desert by the Spirit and that for 40 days he
was tempted by Satan. The Gospels of
Matthew and Luke explain that Jesus fasted
while in the desert, that Satan presented him
with three temptations, and that Jesus
refused each one, quoting Scripture. Only
the Gospels of Matthew and Mark report
that angels ministered to Jesus at the end of
his time in the desert.
In each of the Synoptic Gospels, the
temptation of Jesus follows his baptism by
John the Baptist. In Mark's Gospel, we are
told that Jesus went into the desert
immediately after his baptism, led by the
Spirit. Jesus' public ministry in Galilee
begins after his temptation in the desert. As
Jesus announces it, the Kingdom of God is
beginning; the time of the fulfillment of
Calendar
God's promises is here.
2015
The fact that Jesus spent 40 days in the
desert is significant. This recalls the 40 years
that the Israelites wandered in the desert February 27 - March 1
Lenten Retreat
after being led from slavery in Egypt. The
prophet Elijah also journeyed in the desert
March 8
for 40 days and nights, making his way to
"Kaziukas"
Horeb, the mountain of God, where he was
also attended to by an angel of the Lord.
March13 - 24
Remembering the significance of these Fr. Julius Sasnauskas, ofm
events, we also set aside 40 days for the
visiting our Parish
season of Lent.
In Mark's Gospel, the desert marks
April 5
beginning of Jesus' battle with Satan; the
EASTER
ultimate test will be in Jesus' final hours on
April 12
the cross. In a similar way, our Lenten
Memorial Mass
observances are only a beginning, a
for Jonas Govedas
preparation for and a reinforcement of our
ongoing struggle to resist the temptations we
April 17 -18
face in our lives. During Lent, we are led by
Rummage sale
the Holy Spirit to remember the vows of
Baptism in which we promised to reject sin
May 3
and to follow Jesus. Just as Jesus was
First communion
ministered to by the angels, God also
supports us in our struggle against sin and
May 24
temptation. We succeed because Jesus PENTECOST SUNDAY
conquered sin once and for all in his saving
June 6 - 7
death on the cross. (loyolaspress.com)

LENT 2015 February 27 - March 1
Our Parish Lenten Retreat will be led by
Fr. Kestutis Genys, Seminary Prefect and Permanent
Deacons Education Centre Director of the
Archdiocese of Kaunas.
10 easy Lenten practices for the faithful,
Godfried Cardinal Danneels, Archbishop of Brussels
1. Pray. Each morning and evening say a prayer for example
„Our Father“ or Hail Mary“.
2. Pick one sentence or one idea from each Sunday‘s Gospel and
reflect on it all week.
3. Each time that you purchase something that is not absolutely
essential – donate something to the poor. One needs to share out
of their abundance.
4. Each day do a kindness or a good deed (without being asked).
5. When you hear unkind words spoken about you, resist the
temptation to payback in kind. It is better to remain silent and to
break the cycle of mockery.
6. If you have spent 15 minutes with the TV channel changer and
have not found anything of value, turn off the TV and spend time
with those you live with or read a good book.
7. During Lent, finish your meals with a slight feeling of hunger.
Show solidarity with those starving in the world.
8. Remember that forgiveness is associated with a sincere desire
to forgive.
9. You have promised someone a phone call or a visit? Do it
now.
10. Be generous with your time and possessions.

Pope Francis:
trust in Lord,
conversion of
heart
Pope Francis led a
solemn procession
on the Aventine Hill
in Rome yesterday evening, from the
Church of St. Anselm to the Basilica of St.
Sabina, where he celebrated Mass and
imposed ashes on the faithful at the start
of the great penitential season of Lent.
The Holy Father made his way from
St Anselm to St. Sabina as the
Benedictine and Dominican monks of the
respective churches chanted the litany of
the saints, then changed out of his cope
and into his stole and chasuble, and
began the celebration of the Holy
Eucharist on Ash Wednesday: the
beginning of the whole Church’s journey
of penance and conversion that
culminates in Easter.
“We are limited creatures,” Pope
Francis said in his homily, “sinners ever in
need of repentance and conversion.” The
Holy Father went on to say, “The call to
conversion is then a push to return, as
did the son of the parable, to the arms of
God, tender and merciful Father, to trust
Him and to entrust ourselves to Him.”
The 40 days of Lent culminate in
the Easter Triduum: Mass of the Lord’s
Supper on Holy Thursday, the Passion
liturgy on Good Friday, and the Easter
Vigil Mass, in the night between Holy
Saturday and Easter Sunday, this year to
take place the 1st week of April.
