am éricains. Cette déco u ve rte s ’avère m auvaise p o u r le
tourism e, ça risque de d é co u ra g e r les investisseurs. Les as
sociations a m é rica in e s de chasse s ’ém euvent, l'a m b a s
sa d e u r s ’énerve. Il faut faire un exem ple. W ilbert C offin a eu
l ’im p ru d e n ce de dire à la p o lic e q u ’il a va it dépanné ces
chasseurs. De là à en faire l ’assassin, il n ’y a que quelques

L ’a ctio n se situe à A tla n tic City, ancienne station balnéaire

enlèvera ses d e rn iè re s illusions. Vieillesse et souvenirs,
jeunesse et renouveau: les p e rsonnages et les décors du

Le film s ’attache à suivre les m e m b re s du g ro u p e ro ck
CANO (C oopérative des artistes du N o u ve l-O n ta rio ) lo rs de
le u r tournée de concerts q u 'ils e ffe ctu a ie n t au cours de l ’an
née 1977, en O ntario e t au Québec. C om posé de onze
m e m b re s , à p a rt e n tiè re , (il n ’y a p a s de vedette,
l'é cla ira g iste est aussi im p o rta n t que le soliste), CANO
chante en français m ais le son est am éricain. Face à l ’in
d u strie du disque, le g ro u p e d o it p o u rta n t se b attre p o u r im
p o s e r une fo rm u le coopérative, encore in é d ite dans ce
m ilieu, e t q u i ne va pas, cependant, sans co m p ro m is. Les
avantages, toutefois, au niveau de la p a rtic ip a tio n co n ce p
tuelle p a ra isse n t évidents.
The film CANO is a b o u t a ro c k g ro u p o f the sam e nam e
(s h o rt fo r New O ntario A rtis ts ’ C oopérative) a n d was sh ot
d u rin g a to u r o f O ntario a n d Q uébec in 1977. The g ro u p is
m ade up o f eleven m em bers, each one p la yin g an im p o rta n t
rôle, from the le a d sin g e r to the lig h tin g technician. They
sing in French b u t th e ir so u n d is A m erican. Their collective
a p p ro a ch is u n usual in the m u sic in d u s try a n d they have to
fig h t to m aintain it.

wake up ju s t in tim e to save him a n d B lanche takes o ver the
driving. When they fin a lly reach C ontrecoeur, they fin d their
husbands, one b itte r a n d d isillu sio n e d , the o th e r im p o te n t
and alcoholic. This tim e they leave the two m en w ithout

L ’a ction se situe dans les années 50, dans un q u a rtie r p o p
ulaire de l ’est de M ontréal. S uzanne vient d ’un m ilieu
ouvrier. A nglaise p a r son père, française p a r sa mère, elle
se sent tiraillée p a r le u r c o m p o rte m e n t to ta le m e n t opposé.
Elle s o rt de l ’adolescence p o u r p a rta g e r sa vie et son a m o u r
entre deux hom m es. L ’un d ’eux, N ick Callaghan, s ’affiche
com m e l ’exem p le m êm e de la je u n esse rebelle de cette
époque. Un peu voyou, il lu i voue un a m o u r sincère sans
p o u r auta nt lu i a ssu re r la p ro te c tio n et la sé cu rité qu'elle
recherche. De l ’a utre côté, Georges, lui, g e n til et a tte n tio n
né, aim e Suzanne sans que cette d e rn iè re p re n n e ses s e n ti

Un d o cum en taire tourné à l ’occasion de l ’une des p lu s im
p o rta n te s grèves q u i aient eu lieu au Canada et qui, co n
tra ire m e n t à ce que l'on p o u rra it attendre, ne nous p ro p o se
pas le discours des hom m es. Le film essaie p lu tô t de rendre
ju stice aux fem m es p o u r le rôle q u ’elles o n t jo u é dans ce
co n flit de travail. Par ià, il p ro p o se une nouvelle im age, une
im age plus juste, p en se n t les auteurs, des fem m es en m ilieu
ouvrier. Cette grève, d'une durée de h u it m ois et demi, est
celle des 11,700 travailleurs de m ine et de ra ffin e rie de
l ’Inte rn a tio n a l N ickel C om pany o f Canada (INCO) à S u d b u ry
en Ontario. Ce c o n flit s ’in s c rit dans une longue série de
grèves menées p a r les o uvriers de cette ville p o u r l ’a ffirm a
tion de leurs d ro its vis-à-vis cette c o m p a g n ie m ultinationale
qu i est le seul em p lo ye u r im p o rta n t de la région.
Un rep o rta g e en Chine su r la vie q u o tid ie n n e du co m b in a t
sid é ru rg iq u e de W oukang et de sa cité ouvrière, baptisée
“ Cité rouge de l ’acier". Une a ttention p a rtic u liè re est po rtée
à un couple et leurs trois enfants choisis p a rm i les ouvriers
du h aut fourneau. M o n sie u r Liang et M adam e Yu so n t tous
deux d ip lô m é s de l ’In stitu t de m é ta llu rg ie de Wuhan et
tra va ille n t au co m b in a t de Woukang. Par le u r in te rm é d ia ire
le film va nous faire d é c o u v rir et co m p re n d re les structures
s o cio -p o litiq u e s à la base de la société chinoise urb ain e ac
tuelle, les co m p o rte m e n ts de la classe o uvrière et le fo n c
tionnem ent des com ités d'habitants, créés dans le double
but de ré p o n d re aux besoins d 'é q u ip e m e n t de la p o p u lation
et de fo u rn ir des em plois à une m a in -d 'o e u vre locale.

The strike lasted e ig h t and a h a lf months. 11,700 w orkers
w ent out. Women w orkers a n d the wives o f w orkers were in
tégral and in stru m e n ta l in a il aspects o f the struggle, which
was fo u g h t ag ainst the In te rn a tio n a l N icke l C om pany of
Canada (INCO) in S udbury, Ontario. The s trik e and the need
to successfully m aintain it were c ru c ia l in that the com pany,
a m ultinational, is the la rg e st single e m p lo y e r in the entire
région.
The iron a n d Steel fa cto ry co m p le x o f W oukang province,
China, is the location fo r this d o cu m e n ta ry film on the daily
lives o f the w orkers. N ickn a m e d ‘‘The Red City o f Steel",
W oukang is an exam ple o f the way Chinese society functions in général. Through the experience o f Mr. Liang and
M m e Yu. graduâtes o f the Wuhan M e ta llu rg ica l Institute, we
gain a set o f im p o rta n t in sig h ts into the s o c io -p o litic a l stru c
ture o f co n te m p o ra ry China. The film exam ines the functio ning o f one o f the lo ca l com m ittees w hich has the d o uble p u rpose o f re sp o n d in g the lo ca l e q u ip m e n t needs as well as
finding w ork fo r the p eople in the area.

Le film révèle le courage de tout un p e u p le d é te rm in é à ne

certains n o m m e n t "voleurs de jo b s". Q u ’en e s t-il.v ra im e n t
de le u r vie? Au centre du film, le tém oignage de deux fe m
mes: elles p a rle n t de le u r vie, chez elles, au pays natal, de
le u r départ, du p ro b lè m e de s ’id e n tifie r a le u r nouveau pays
et à le u r co m m unauté ethnique. La q uestion: re ste r ou

dans les restaurants, dans les services m énagers, etc.

Two w om en m ake up the ce n tra l core o f the film : they talk
a b o u t th e ir lives, th e ir hom eland, the reasons fo r leaving, the
p ro b le m s o f id e n tifyin g with th e ir new c o u n try a n d th e ir own
p a rtic u la r ethnie com m unity. For them, one question is
central: w hether to stay o r go back. A n d in the m eantim e,
they m u st w ork: in the g a rm e n t industry, in restaurants, in
service areas, etc. S everal pe o p le are in te rvie w e d in the film
with th e ir backs to the cam éra. They talk a b o u t th e ir fear o f
sp e a king o u t ag a inst em ployers a n d th e ir fear o f im m ig ra
tion officiais. The film u n d e rlin e s the k in d o f e xp lo itatio n im
