2016 THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY WOLFPACK WOMEN'S SOCCER
“Starting Brand New’ is certainly the
underlying theme for the Thompson Rivers
University WolfPack women’s soccer
program.
The WolfPack have an entirely new
coaching staff. Kelly Shantz takes over the
reins of a team which made the playoffs in
Canada West in its second season. Shantz
is a long time soccer man and is a former
player and assistant coach in the Cariboo
College/University College of the Cariboo/
Thompson Rivers University program. He
is also a former president of the TRU Sports
Task Force.
Joining him is former UCC women’s head
coach Kevin Fertile and three recent
graduates of the WolfPack program: Alanna
Bekkering, Danielle Fauteux and Taylor
Shantz. Greg Kozoris, a well-known local
athletic conditioning expert has come on as
a strength and conditioning coach.
Gone are most of last year’s roster: there
are five returnees from that team and
two of them are starters: Kindra Maricle
(Kamloops, BC)—who is the WolfPack
captain this year along with Natalie Verdiel
(Powell River, BC). Another player who saw
limited time last year in her rookie campaign
but should see more field time this season is
Marisa Mendonca (Penticton, BC).
Hailee Gerun (Nelson, BC) was a red shirt
last season but has worked her way onto
the 25 player roster. Another player whose
leadership will be counted on will be Salmon
Arm’s Katie Harding. Harding played with
the WolfPack for two seasons but sat out
the last two years focusing on her studies in
the Bachelor of Nursing program. She will
provide an offensive punch and a steady
presence in the midfield.
Shantz has a large number of first year
players on his roster this season: as he looks
to the future rebuilding of the program and
developing a new core. This players include
six players who have played together for
many years through the Kamloops youth
soccer association Rep program: Hanna
Marra, Sasha Sirianni, Brenna Worsfold,
Delaney Collins, Keenan Degen and Cassie
Morris. Collins will red shirt this year as she
recovers from torn knee surgery but looks
to join the line up in 2017-18.
Players to watch this year include the
Simpson twins: Ava and Mia Simpson
(Delta, BC) Kelsey Thorlelsson (Winnipeg,
MB) and Kenzie Lacon (Youbou, BC).
The starting keeper’s position is wide open
with Alyssa Smith (Langley, BC), Deanna
Brady (Richmond, BC) and Worsfold battling
for the job.
The WolfPack start their 2016 Canada West
season on the road in Calgary on September
10th. Their home opener isn’t until Saturday
September 17th when they entertain the
University of Alberta Pandas at Hillside
Stadium.

TRU WolfPack 2016 Roster
KELLY SHANTZ
HEAD COACH
Kelly Shantz became the third head coach of the WolfPack
women’s soccer program on April 5, 2016 replacing Tom
McManus.
Shantz’s days with this institution date back to 1979-80 when
he was a student/athlete under Pat O’Brien with the Cariboo
College Chiefs. He then joined the then Cariboo College (later
the University College of the Cariboo and now TRU) Sports
Task Force and was responsible for running the Mike Bartram
Memorial Golf Tournament for the past 17 years.
As well, Shantz had been an assistant coach starting in 2001-02
part time and then full time for nine years under the direction of
Eric Schweizer. He remained with the program for a year after
Schweizer retired and McManus came on as head coach.’
Shantz feels changing the culture of how the program is
run is key. “Playing CIS soccer at a high level is a year round
commitment. It ebbs and flows from an intensity standpoint,
but you will not be a good player nor will we be a competitive
team if we don’t understand that. Our current culture doesn’t
have that stamp on it and we need to get there fast.”
Shantz adds: “TRU has a fantastic women’s soccer pedigree.
From Cariboo College to the University College of the Cariboo
and now Thompson Rivers University there are hundreds of
alumni, coaches, parents and boosters who have made it a
special place for girls soccer for 25 years. It’s my goal to invite
all these people to help me make it a special place for the
Kamloops soccer scene again.”
He is married to Heather. Daughter Taylor is an assistant coach
with the WolfPack. He has a son Carson.
KEVIN FERTILE
ASSISTANT COACH
Kevin Fertile returns the program after being the head coach
of the University College of the Cariboo women’s team from
2000-2002. Fertile is known for his ability to be a brilliant
tactician. He was a youth and rep coach in the Kamloops
Youth Soccer Association from 1996-2010. He also coached
in the IPL (2004), the BC Summer Games (2004) and helped
coach the Kamloops Heat in the Pacific Coast Soccer
League’s Women’s Premiere Division for a number of years.
Both his children (Kyle and Sarah) are former WolfPack soccer
programs. He is married to Sandra. Kevin works at ICBC

started in all 14 league matches. Natalie was the MVP at the BC “AA” provincials in 2015. She was also her high
schools top female athlete in 2015 and was named the top player when she was in U-16 (2012). Natalie swam and
did gymnastics competitively while growing up. She says her parents are her biggest influences. Her favorite
movie is “The Breakfast Club”. Something you might not know about her is that she is bilingual. Her favorite
color is blue. The three items she would take to a desert island would be a boat, food and water. If she could be
on another TRU varsity team, Natalie would choose to be on the swim team. Natalie enjoyed participating in
the Labor Day picnic last year because she got to play soccer with young children. Her favorite visiting field is
UBC because it is a stadium. Winning those provincials in 2015.

KELSEY THORKELSSON
(THOR-KEL-SON)
Winnipeg, MB (Dakota Collegiate)
5’9” Centre Back
1st year (Nursing)
19 years old
Parents’ names: Rhonda @ Kevin
Kelsey transferred to TRU after taking Science courses last year at the University of Winnipeg. She was named
the ‘Athlete of the Year’ all four years she attended high school (2010-14) Her fondest sports moment was
playing and trying all types of sports and forming great friendships in high school. She played club volleyball for
the Winnipeg Winmen. Her sister Taylor is her biggest influence for what she does and how well she does it (she
is playing Canada West basketball with the University of Winnipeg). Kelsey likes to hike. Her favorite number
is 11 and if she could have a super power it would be the ability to fly. The three things Kelsey would bring to
a desert island would be water, puzzles and a way to make fire. She listens to music before a match and her
favorite color is blue.

BRENNA WORSFOLD
Kamloops, BC (Sa-Hali Secondary)
5’6” Keeper
1st year (Sciences)
17 years old
Parents’ names: Tanis Hubberstey & Kelly Knowler and Ben Worsfold
Brenna committed to the WolfPack in May 2016. She played REP soccer since age 11 with current teammates:
Hanna Marra, Keenan Degen, Cassie Morris, Delaney Collins, and Sasha Sirianni. In Minor soccer they were
provincial champs in 2012 and 2014 and silver medal winners in 2011 and 2013. Brenna’s older sister Taiysa was
a five year member of the TRU women’s basketball team. Brenna played basketball and volleyball throughout
her time at Sa-hali. She was part of their provincial winning volleyball team in 2015-16. She likes the color purple
along with reading, camping and all sports. Her favorite number is three.

DELANEY COLLINS
Kamloops, BC (Valleyview Secondary)
5’9” Midfield
1st year (Sciences)
18 years old
Parents’ names: Sheila & Ron
Delaney committed to the WolfPack in May 2016. She played minor soccer with fellow WolfPack
freshmen: Cassie Morris, Brenna Worsfold, Sasha Sirianni, Hanna Marra and Keenan Degen. Delaney
suffered an ACL injury two years ago and returned two months ahead of schedule. Sadly, an injury
this spring will result in her ‘red shirting’ this season. Delaney played competitive volleyball through
high school. Her biggest influence is personal trainer Crosby Dorais because he pushes her to be the
best she can be along with her parents. Her uncle Doug Spooner played NCAA Div I hockey for the
University of Alaska and her cousin is Joe Hicketts (two time Cdn Jr. national hockey team player and
Detroit Red Wing prospect). She loves Pop/Rap and her favorite singer is Drake. Her hobbies include
training and volunteering. Her favorite movie is “She’s the Man” with Zac Efron/Johnny Galecki and
Kaley Cuoco being her favorite actors/actress. If she could bring three things to a desert island they
would be soccer ball, lots of food and good company. If Delaney could play for another varsity team at
TRU it would be volleyball. Two things her teammates might now about her is that she doesn’t like pop
and she has never dyed her hair. Delaney’s favorite number is 3.

Coach Shantz took the team on a ‘retreat’ and to play some
exhibition matches against some PACWEST College teams
in late August. This included a hike on “Needle Peak” in the
Coquihalla mountain range near the Zopkios rest stop. Their
hike was over two and a half hours
