The WolfPack have an entirely new coaching staff. Kelly Shantz takes over the reins of a team which made the playoffs in Canada West in its second season. Shantz is a long time soccer man and is a former player and assistant coach in the Cariboo College/University College of the Cariboo/ Thompson Rivers University program. He is also a former president of the TRU Sports Task Force. Joining him is former UCC women’s head coach Kevin Fertile and three recent graduates of the WolfPack program: Alanna Bekkering, Danielle Fauteux and Taylor Shantz. Greg Kozoris, a well-known local athletic conditioning expert has come on as a strength and conditioning coach. Gone are most of last year’s roster: there are five returnees from that team and two of them are starters: Kindra Maricle (Kamloops, BC)—who is the WolfPack captain this year along with Natalie Verdiel (Powell River, BC). Another player who saw limited time last year in her rookie campaign but should see more field time this season is Marisa Mendonca (Penticton, BC). Hailee Gerun (Nelson, BC) was a red shirt last season but has worked her way onto the 25 player roster. Another player whose leadership will be counted on will be Salmon Arm’s Katie Harding. Harding played with the WolfPack for two seasons but sat out the last two years focusing on her studies in the Bachelor of Nursing program. She will provide an offensive punch and a steady presence in the midfield. Shantz has a large number of first year players on his roster this season: as he looks to the future rebuilding of the program and developing a new core. This players include six players who have played together for many years through the Kamloops youth soccer association Rep program: Hanna Marra, Sasha Sirianni, Brenna Worsfold, Delaney Collins, Keenan Degen and Cassie Morris. Collins will red shirt this year as she recovers from torn knee surgery but looks to join the line up in 2017-18. Players to watch this year include the Simpson twins: Ava and Mia Simpson (Delta, BC) Kelsey Thorlelsson (Winnipeg, MB) and Kenzie Lacon (Youbou, BC). The starting keeper’s position is wide open with Alyssa Smith (Langley, BC), Deanna Brady (Richmond, BC) and Worsfold battling for the job. The WolfPack start their 2016 Canada West season on the road in Calgary on September 10th. Their home opener isn’t until Saturday September 17th when they entertain the University of Alberta Pandas at Hillside Stadium. Our current culture doesn’t have that stamp on it and we need to get there fast.” Shantz adds: “TRU has a fantastic women’s soccer pedigree. From Cariboo College to the University College of the Cariboo and now Thompson Rivers University there are hundreds of alumni, coaches, parents and boosters who have made it a special place for girls soccer for 25 years.
