ALEXANDER, 0. W . COOLIDGE, THOS. HARRS, OKAS. D. RIGHOLS, N. A. HAMILTON, Republican County Committee. Dated Aug. 22i, 1374. STATE TICKET. Oar readers trill learn of the result of the Republican State Convention by consulting, the ticket announced at the head of this column. In addition to expressing our own opinion in re gard to the candidates nominated, wo give below the views of the Lansing jRepublican, and wilt say that if the press correctly represents public sen timent, the entire Republican party of the State will heartily endorse the ac tion of the Convention and the candi dates trill be elected next November by overwhelming majorities. It is a strong ticket, and giving so general satisfaction cannot fail to receive a hearty support in all parts of the State. Nearly all the present officers were renominated. Those who were not will leave their positions carrying with them the respect and good will of the entire party that elected them. The vote given Auditor General Hum phrey, for a re-nomination to the fifth term, was highly complimentary to the good qualities and efficiency of that excellent officer. I t is a custom so generally followed as to have almost rile force of unwritten law, to not elect a State officer for more than two terms. H e has; already held the of fice for eight consecutive years, and, nis retiring now does not indicate in the least that his services have not al ways been satisfactory to the public. The nomination o f Col. Wm. B. MeOreery, of Flint, was foreshadowed by the glowing accounts given in the press of his services during the late war,and Ms fitness and worthiness for that res ponsible and important position,, The Convention was harmonious in, its ac tion in every particular, and ba3 done a good work. The following: from the liepvMkan truthfully represents the feeling throughout the State:: The Republican State Convention renominated Governor Bagley by ac clamation. There was not a dissent ing voice. Our present able .Execu tive is hut one of a line of Republican Governors, who, from the time the Republican party obtained the admin istration of Michigan affairs, have evinced the utmost solicitude and- re gard for all our charitable, humane, and reformatory institutions. Not one of all the number has shown a more anxious solicitude, a more tender regard for the waifs and the unfortun ate committed to the care of our State, than our present Governor. The com pliment of his renomination was not only carrying out the well-established usage, of the Republican party of Michigan, but was a hearty attribute of personal regard and admiration for Ms record upon all questions, finan cial and otherwise, in which the peo ple have a common interest. Of his triumphant re-election by an Over whelming majority there can bo no doubt. No other person was thought of for Lieut. Governor excepting: Henry H. Holt. The people in Ms own section of the State were as warmly in his favor as when first nominated. Pop ular then, ho has done notMng in an official capacity wMch has not tended to increase the confidence with which the people regarded Mm two years ago? A s an impartial presiding offi cer of the Senate during the last two years he has won a host of friends. B ut twice in tho history o f the Repub lican party of MicMgan has a Lieut. Governor been re-elected, the two in stances being George A . Coe and Morgan Bates. And in our recollec tion of political events there has not been so remarkable a unanimity of sentiment in regard to this: office. The choice of E . G. D. Holden as nominee for the: office of Secretary of State is excellent in every respect. For years ho has been, one of the most efficient Republican workers among the young; men, o f the northwestern portion o f the State. For several years Chairman of the Kent County Republican; Committee, as successor of Mr; Miller; who had made a splendid record in that capacity. Mr. Holden gave abundant satisfaction of his own political efforts.: H e is a profession and an excellent speaker. Being also. r. a man of fine literary taste and "sound business qualifications, he is peculiarly adapt ed for the: position. His nomination was by acclamation; Col. TVm; B . McCreery, the nomi nee for State Treasurer, is a resident cf Flint. H e enlisted as a private at the breaking out of the rebellion, and by Ms own meritorious services won the shoulder-straps of Colonel, rising through, the regular..,grades of promo tion, For; some; time; during.',the war he was confined in •Libby Prison at ■ ■“ * . ***» ?• ■ ’ * * * r* ■ * ,■ .' ■. " J- '* ■ i ',AA ;. I• !i V i i At ■ _ Richmond, and was an originator of the plan of tunneling under the street, by which 103 Union soldiers made their escape. Some of these men were afterwards recaptured, but Colonel’ Me Oreery returned immediately to active service. He was repeatedly wounded, and received honorable men tion for his gallantry from Maj. Gen. Thomas and others high, in command. He has had extensive business expe rience ; and as an officer of the U. S. Revenue Department has received great praise from the Commissioner at Washington for the efficient man ner in which he has conducted the af fairs of his • office. His nomination will give strength to the ticket, for the b'oys who wore the blue will rally with zeal to the support of so gallant a comrade. General Ralph Ely, tho nominee for Auditor General, is the present State Senator from the 26th district, and is no w 54 years of age. He emigrated from New Work to Michigan in 1847 and became a resident of Ionia Coun ty, from whence lie removed in 1854 to Alma, in Gratiot County, his pres ent residence. In 1860 he was elect ed Treasurer of Gratiot County, re signed that office to enter the army in 1861 as Captain in the 8 th Michigan Infantry, better known as “The Trav eling Regiment;” was promoted to Major in 1862, afterward Lieutenant Colonel, and Colonel, and was brevet ed Brigadier General by President Lincoln for conspicuous gallantry in assaulting the enemy’s works in front of Petersburg. General E ly is both a farmer and lumberman, devoting his time to the former business during the summer,|and to the latter during the winter. Ho has a large farm of 400 acres within two miles of Alma, 200 acres of which are improved. His reputation stands high as a man of strict business integrity, and he will discharge the duties o f his office with fidelity. Andrew Jackson Smith, tbe nomi nee for Attorney General, Is a resi dent of Cass County. He has been Prosecuting Attorney of that county for the last 12 years. Little known to the State at large, he bears a good report among .bis brother members of the bar in that section for legal ability. The renomination e f Leverett A. Clapp as Commissioner of the State Land Office by acclamation was a just compliment to this faithful officer. Under Ms administration that office no longer bears the taint of corrup tion in the immense and Incessant land transactions between the State and the people. Hon. Daniel B . Briggs was renom inated for the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, having no com petitor. I t is enough to say that this office, so long filled by our ablest ed ucational men, under his supervision continues to advance in every respect our educational interests throughout the State.! Edgar Rexford, the nominee for Member of the State Board of Educa tion, is a young man of fine educa tion, now engaged in mercantile busi ness at .Tpsilanti. It was particular ly desired that one of the members of this Board should reside where the Normal School is located, which is under the direct control of that Board. A s a whole the ticket will command the united support of the Republican party in Michigan, and it will he elect ed by a large majority of the popular vote. THE SOUTH. The news from the South, during the past few weeks, has been such as to create in the minds of all lovers of peace and good government, grave apprehensions that the war of races so much; talked of and feared, has act ually begun. We have not mentioned any of these difficulties because we thought the first; reports were greatly exaggerated, and the opponents of the Republican party in the North would say that*the stories were created and circulated for political effect. Recent Occurrences, however, have taken place which no longer leave any room to doubt that there exists in the South what is known as the ,W<£hite League,” that has for its motto, “A White Man’s Government, ruled b y White Men,” and that they are] determined to hurl from office every Republican in the South, and to, have the negroes choose between submission or total, extermination of the race. Iff several cases open assaults have been made, and a number murdered. We will give tho particulars of some of these outrages another week. A history of one is the same .as that of all the oth ers. The negroes are praying for their former shackles of slavery to fall upon them to put an end to their present condition o f terror and threat ened destruction. The Government has been earnestly petitioned to inter fere and protect the people in the en joyment of their rights. The whole affair is lamentable in the extreme, and is continually growing more se rious and alarming. Black Hills Gold Discoveries. Wo publish tMs morning two letters from our *wn correspondent with the Black Hills expedition, a communica tion from General Forsyth, who ac companies the command, and an in terview with Mr. Charles Collins of the Sioux City Times, all devoted to the important* discoveries wMch.have been made in the region traversed by the expedition, under General Ouster. They give the most oomplete and val(uable information regarding the newly opened country, and will he welcomed as a strikingly opportune rev elation by the: thousands who are watching the news from that re gion with such, eagerness. The Black Hills can. he reached from Chi cago in six; days, and we should not be surprised to see a gold excitement; Bpringing up over tMs intelligence rivaling the California, fever of ’49. Already the frontier towns are in a tumult, and the excitement is spread ing. Little is talked of or- thought; about save the discoveries in this wonderfulland. Besides the gold which; is found in such abundance, iron, plumbago, and gypsum exist in limit less quantities,' and the soil and ’the climate are of'the most inviting de scription. There is a treaty which' makes any incursion by the whites in to tMs country unlawful,- hut the' Government will without - doubt, take •.speedy measures to make-satisfactory . ^ Q o u fft y . arrangements with the Indians for its occupation. I t would he a sin against the country and against the world to permit this region, so rich in treasure, to remain unimproved and unoccupied, merely to furnish hunting grounds to savages. We owe the Indians justice and fair play, hut we owe it to civili zation that such a garden of mineral wealth should be brought into occupa tion and use. There will be little dif ficulty;; however, if care is observed not to precipitate hostilities by a too speedy and unauthorized invasion. Those contemplating going there should wait for the proper permission, though we doubt i f this will bo the case, as the temptation is too strong to brook delay. We shall probably hear in consequence o f collisions with the In dians, though these will not stop the tide which not even the fear o f death seems capable of stemming in such cases. It will not bo many days before wo shall know officially still further of tMs important discovery. Sufficient is already known, however, to make it certain that the .region is rich in mineral wealth, and extends the strongest inducements to settle ment and development.’ There is no greed like that for gold, and there is always danger of hasty and preeipi-. tate action under the stimulus of an excitement which urges the settler to fields like these. Men should reflect well before they move in such a mat ter, and weigh well the chances, tho hardships, and the probabilities of failure. It is always wise to let well enough alone, and those who are in the enjoyment of comfortable positions would exhibit sound judgement by re maining where they are. To others the case: may be different. We utter this timely warning in view .of the in evitable excitement which must spring up over this discovery, and to caution people against the headlong rush which brought so much disappointment and suffering to thousands in the days of the first settlement of California.— In ter - Ocean. They then told them to “get 1 vely,” “dig out,” “climb,” “make themSelves scarce,” etc., all of which was neither understood or acted upon by the men, who proved to be Swedes and didn’t talk slang. Briggs, on Day’s Avenue,, was broken into and some-chisels and oth er tools stolen, no doubt for the pur peso of aiding in committing other burglaries. The same parties,no doubt, effected an entrance into the clothing tind boot and shoe store of Messrs. Estes & Uoble. A trunk and two valises, together vrith nearly §300 worth of clothing and some change Were stolen from Mr. Estes, and three hats and a pair of shoos from Mr. Uoble. It was ascertained that the trunk was checked for Chicago on the morning Express—2:51 o’clock, and proper parties were telegraphed to in that citj'to be on the watch. A por tion of the -goods were found and one of tho parties arrested. Efforts are now^heing made to obtain requisitions from the Governors to bring him back to this village for trial. The R ecord and Detroit Tribune ono year for $3.10. Post age p r e p a id after January' next. B e r r ie n .„4i. C p T in ty R e c o rd , . P ersonal.— We received a call on Wednesday last from Justice Glover, of Cassopolis.,. ,Mr. Glover. lias had some'experience in journalism, and very naturally has a duo regard and attachment for ‘the members of the press. Ho is a strong temperance ad vocate, and his docket ho says is proof that the’ prohibition law is a success, and that its violations can he p’unished. Ther 0; are few towns of the size of Cassopolis in the country that can compare with it, go far as temperance' and morality are concerned. This is attributed, in part, at least, to* faithful and efficient local officers, who are sustained, in the proper discharge of their duties by an open approval and sanction on the part of the intelligent and better portion of the community. Buchanan^ made a change in the subscription price of the paper,we can see a growing- disposition, among our friends to pay for the same; and • to make strong efforts to pay in advance. The carelessness on tho part of a pub lisher to collect his dues promptly, has a tendency, we think, to create in the minds of the subscribers an idea that the paper is of but little consequence, is of hut little value to the publisher, and that it, doesn’t make much differ ence if the same is never paid for. The bill is therefore allowed to run from year to year, the publisher de prived of the uso of money he has earned, and a debt accumulating that will be difficult to discharge, if ever settled at all. Right wrongs no per son. No man can consistently ask that his paper be continued beyond the expiration of one year, without the same is paid for. No honest man will require more than this. We have therefore adopted this rule- and will .adhere to it strictly in the future. Those who pay in advance will he al-lowed'-a reasonable reduction from the Subscription price, and we urge all to pay in advance, as it will save 25 per cent, by-so doing,'and will be more satisfactory to us than to receive the full amount at the end of the year. All those now in arrears who will pay? one years’ subscription by the first of next month, will be considered the same as paying in advance, and will receive the paper for §1.50 ; §2 must be paid after that date. The time is given on account of our cheap prices during the campaign, ’This offer will not be extended. Let all who can, pay their subscription during the pres ent month. . . , S in c e T he Marshal is making an. estimate of tho amount of sidewalk in the vil lage. A report will be given next week. According to the character o f | the household -words, looks, and trival actions, is the true temper of our vir tue. Hence there aro many men roputed good, and, as the world goes, really so, who believe in their domestic life the promise of their holiday and. Sunday demeanor. Great in the large assembly, they are little at the fire side.
