March - VA-B GWRRA Wings By The Sea
Hi Everyone, Well, February was very busy with Wingless Weekend, our Polar Bear Run, chapter visits, and Dessert/Appetizer Bob and Ann Lutton night. As for Wingless Weekend, we had a great time with the Super Heroes theme. I went as the original Iron Man, the one that was gray, and Ann went as Super Pickle, Dilbert. Turning to the Polar Bear Run, we want to thank everyone who came out to help set up and run the event. Al Dobbins and Jim Sexton provided some tasty chili, regular and venison, while our members donated the chips, cupcakes, cookies, cornbread, cheese, and crackers. Going into that morning, we had 58 preregistered folks and the weather was overcast and a little chilly. But as registration time drew closer, bikers from GWRRA Chapters in Virginia; A, C, D, E, L, O, U, W, and North Carolina; NCE2 rolled in. Then, we had several other groups bringing members from the American Legion Riders, Dead End Riders, Mustangs, Saints and Soldiers, Sons of Poseidon, Tidewater Bikers, Honda Riders of Tidewater, Christian Motorcyclists Association and the Blue Knights. The turnout was surprising and TOTALLY AWESOME! Some 175 bikers turned out for our event and hopefully, most will return next year. With the Polar Bear behind us, we have a few marshaling events that can bring money into the chapter. The dates we need to provide bikes for marshaling triathlons are: the Smithfield Sprint on Saturday, April 6 in Smithfield, two motorcycles; Jamestown Triathlon on Saturday, June 8 in Williamsburg, four motorcycles; Tidewater Triathlon on Sunday, July 21 in Hampton, four motorcycles; Patriots Half on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Williamsburg, six motorcycles; and the Patriots Sprint on Sunday, Sept. 8 in Williamsburg, four motorcycles. Please let me know if you are interested and able to help with any of these events. Finally, we are trying to plan some overnight trips and look forward to your input. There are several places we are planning to go this year and hope to have many from the chapter come out and enjoy. On January 9th, a group of Pekin, Illinois bikers Hey Gang, were riding west on I-74 when they saw a girl about to jump off the Murray Baker Bridge. So they stopped. Life Grand Master Award Rider Education Highlight Do you Facebook? This is a great tool for keeping in touch with family and friends. We are contemplating setting up a chapter Facebook page. Would you participate and use this page? Let us know by sending an e-mail to Glenn. In January it was Dave and Dolores Ebmeier. This month we got to present the Life Grand Master award to Belinda Spangler. To achieve this award, a member has to maintain their Level IV qualifications and First Aid/CPR and seminar requirements current. The course is divided into a classroom session and a road portion. Contact John Bowles to get your name on the list for the next Road Captain’s Course. With this being the last of this winter training, we are looking for input for a late fall/winter training schedule. If you have a topic you would like to see presented, please let our Chapter Educator have the information and we will our best to make it happen. Following are a sample of the classes available. Everyone attending must sign ______________________________________ Rider Signature _______________________________________ Co-Rider Signature Wow! What a terrific turnout for our Polar Bear Run 2013 event! Despite early morning rains and grey skies, we had 175 people register and John Bowles many took advantage of our uploading the GPS route information to the VA-B website. They ventured out on the Polar Bear Run route with confidence to enjoy our tidewater countryside. Feedback I received was positive in that no missing person reports were filed to my knowledge. Since our last newsletter, we also enjoyed a terrific Wingless Weekend, and I was able to take advantage of that opportunity to formally qualify as a Medic First Instructor; now able to teach our First Aid/ CPR classes more independently. Glenn Mizner and Nick Knox are also well on their way to this qualification; having completed the coursework last month. We will be able to easily qualify others with the new instructors. I’m also pleased to note that all VA-B participants qualified in First Aid/CPR are current in their qualifications. A last note concerning GWRRA training, on Mar. 2 we conducted the Motorcycle Crash Scene Response Course. The last winter training session scheduled on the first Saturday of April has been cancelled. We will try to offer the Road Captain’s course at a later date. For first-time Road Captain candidates, as well as a super refresher for those already qualified. I urge as many of you as possible plan to attend as a great preparation for what I hope will be a great year for Chapter B riding (e.g. Wing Ding, Camping Trips, Rally in the Valley, and several others). As I mentioned last month, GWRRA Chapter VA-B March 13 Chapter Educator is establishing a more consistent and efficient Trainer Development Program. This program is called GWRRA University. Glenn Mizner and I will be taking a Universal Trainer Development Course in early April. The course is actually a first step for us to further qualify as Universal Trainers, ultimately qualifying to present training in programs such as Leadership Training, Membership Enhancement and Rider Education. Lastly, let me report some good news and bad news, the good news is that I’ve landed an interesting job that I enjoy very much, however, the bad news is that it has me on the road Monday through Thursday which makes my attendance at our monthly meetings a challenge. More good news though, my great buddy Nick Knox has offered to step up in my absence to present our Rider Education and Safety Briefs. Thanks Nick! Remember, anyone needing to reach me for any reason is welcomed to contact me at [email protected]. John Bowles VA-B, Educator Page 6 Page 7 Chapter VA-B March 13 Membership Enhancement Program Coordinator Who do you know? Most of us have friends, neighbors and colleagues that ride motorcycles. Can you think of a Nanette Mizner good reason why they are NOT GWRRA members? With this month’s article, I would like to challenge everyone to bring a non-GWRRA member to a ride, poker run, or a gathering in the next three months. One thing I want to mention before I go too far, anyone who loves to ride can be a GWRRA member! It doesn’t matter what kind of bike they have, so don’t limit this challenge to just Goldwing owners. If you can get someone on a ride and show them how much fun we have as a group, they might be interested in joining us on a regular basis. If you get them to a poker run you are participating in, they will see just how many motorcycle enthusiasts are out having fun with a group, whether it is GWRRA, American Legion Riders, Christian Motorcycle Association, or one of the many other groups out there in our area. Just remember, we would like them to join us, but nothing is stopping them from joining another group as well. Did you know that about 20 of our Chapter VA-B participants are members of two motorcycle groups, some are members of three. Which is great, because each group has a diverse make-up of riders. If you get someone to a gathering, that’s good too. But sometimes our “inside jokes” are lost on visitors. Sometimes we get a little long winded about a particular subject that may not interest them. But exposing them to the gathering environment is something that they have a choice about whether or not to attend, or just come out for the rides. Chapter VA-B March 13 Either way, everyone makes up their own mind about whether they want to experience group riding, chapter life, rallies, overnighters or just enjoy the benefits like Rescue Plus and the other discounts. If you are not sure if they would “fit in” in GWRRA, they can decide that for themselves. We just need to open the door. If we are doing what GWRRA is all about, then having fun might be right up their ally. You can also direct them to visit GWRRA’s website www.GWRRA.org for more information. They can join on a temporary basis and after some time, decide if they want to join or just get a couple free Wing World magazines. So who do you know that just might be interested in joining us and all the fun we have. Chapter FUN at Wingless Weekend On Feb. 15 and 16 the District Staff (including our own John Bowles and Dennis and Kristen Weston did a great job putting together and executing this year’s Wingless Weekend! We had 11 VA-B members besides the those mentioned above. Participants included CDs Bob and Ann Lutton, ACDs Jim Sexton and Carol Hill, COY and MEPC Nanette and Newsletter Editor Glenn Mizner, David Seate, Al and Karla Dobbins, and first-timers, Roy and Cindy Wilde. If you have never been there it is a great place, lots of atmosphere, great food, incredible desserts and most of us got the two for one meal; one to eat there and the other bagged and ready for another meal. The price is very reasonable for the experience. We left Maggiano’s and headed to visit Chapter VA-U in Hanover. We had a nice visit at a short gathering. The group of us pooled our money and won the 50/50, unfortunately they split the pot, so we about broke even. Everyone remembered to get their ride cards signed. The group included Bob and Ann Lutton, Jim Sexton and Carol Hill, Al and Karla Dobbins, and Glenn and Nanette Mizner. We held February’s Dessert Night at the Weston’s, Dennis and Kristen’s home. We had a small turnout, but a good time. It is always interesting to hear first-hand what is going on in the District. Attendees included Bob and Ann Lutton, Jim Sexton and Carol Hill, Glenn and Nanette Mizner, and Dennis and Kristen . Chapter VA-B visited Chapter VA-L at on Feb. 26. We congratulated them on being selected Chapter of the Year for 2012. In attendance were Bob and Ann Lutton, Jim Sexton and Carol Hill, Nick and Teresa Knox, and Glenn and Nanette Mizner. On March 9, Nanette and Glenn Mizner headed to NC-E2 to attend their gathering. They were met there by Nick and Teresa Knox. NC-E2 is giving away raffle tickets for Virginia Districts 73” TV as door prizes. They introduced everyone to their Mascot’s adopted child, that is yet to be named. We learned about the Turner’s Honda Dinner ride on March 23rd to Whitey’s Barbeque in Murfreesboro. This has got to be a chapter ride for VA-B. On March 10, at the spur of an undecided moment, Jim Sexton, Jim Clagett, and Nanette and Glenn Mizner had dinner at Denny’s on the boulevard and headed to Newport News to visit VA-C at their gathering. The gathering was kind of short, but we all had a good time. We ended up getting our drinks for free. Jim Clagett was soliciting for support for this year’s Tour de Cure on April 20. He got a few, but several of the veterans of this event were absent from the gathering. On March 13, Chapter VA-B had our gathering and we had a great turnout. Some members who haven’t been at a gathering in a while attended. We had John Dugan from Georgia who may transfer to VA-B, Bobby and Jan Gunther prospective new members. And several other guests from Chapters VA-L, VA-O, and NC-E2. Page 13 Chapter VA-B March 13 April 25-27, 2013 YOU ARE INVITED TO: WINGING AROUND CHOO CHOO TOWN! Page 17 Chapter VA-B March 13 Leadership BLOC TRAINING About 25 GWRRA members and one non member attended the BLOC training on Mar. 2 at the Towne Bank in Chesapeake. The topics for this training were Crash Scene Response, presented by John Burham and Leadership and Coaching and Mentoring presented by Dennis Weston. BREAKING NEWS FROM GWRRA DIRECTOR Effective Mar. 1, 2013, OCP (Officer Certification Program), will no longer be mandatory. The change from mandatory to non-mandatory should not be construed as the diminished importance of OCP. It is quite the opposite as OCP continues to be a huge benefit to everyone who takes it. It is my belief that our members want to be more informed and have a greater knowledge of our organization. I can not over-emphasize the importance of OCP and sincerely hope that many of you share the same interest in learning more about GWRRA. The more you learn, the better it gets and the better prepared you are to be a successful volunteer if that is your desire. NEW ADDS FOR THE EAST At the Officer’s meeting in Charlottesville on Jan. 19, Dennis Weston swore in our new Assistant District Directors, East, Rich and Debbie Bonham. Rich and Debbie were previously Chapter Directors of VA-D in Richmond. Rich and Debbie fill the spot vacated by Dennis and Kristen Weston when they moved up to District Directors. For those of you who were at our Polar Bear Run, you might have met Rich and Debbie, especially after they won our 50/50 for a total of $358.50. Also sworn in were Ken Taylor as the District Leadership Trainer and new Chapter Educators for VA-D, Don Russell, and VA-J, Clark Graves. There were 14 lucky numbers in February’s newsletter. A couple members claimed their tickets at the gathering, but they did not win. Look for your number in the next issue. Lucky Numbers "Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it." -Sir Henry Royce Chapter VA-B March 13 Page 18 Couple of the Year COY Travels! This was another busy month for us, with Wingless Weekend and our Polar Bear Run as the highlights, and five chapter visits. Following is a rundown of the fun for the month. Feb. 15 and16 – Wingless Weekend – We had an awesome time at Wingless! Friday evening festivities were amazing, as can be expected. The chapter won the “best dressed”, I think it is because we had the largest group in costume. The skits were pretty good; we missed the district skit due to traffic, but saw it later on You Tube. Once again, Chapter VA-C outdid themselves with a great skit, even if it was a little lengthy. Bob had this great Iron Man costume that won him first place for male homemade. It was awesome having Roy and Cynthia Wilde join the costumed for the festivities; I hope they enjoyed themselves enough to attend again next year. Saturday morning we attended the Couple of the Year Reception. This gave us an opportunity to meet with seven of the other 2013 COYs as well as the District COY, Tammie and Ray Pierce; Region COY, Tommy and Gayle Wilson; the Region Directors Al and Carolyn Little; and National Directors Jere and Linda Goodman. The Chapter Directors from each chapter were there to present their chapter COYs for 2013. Tammie and Ray gave each couple a goodie bag with some cool stuff inside, including a calendar to keep up on the events going on in Virginia in 2013. The hour we had was just not enough to talk to all the couples, so I guess we have to visit each of them to exchange stories and get to know each other. After the COY Reception, we went to the Chapter of the Year (CHOY) presentation. Mike Mitchell did a great job of answering some of those lingering questions about the big benefits of participating and how the program works. There was a lot of good discussion about how we can make the competition fun and not too burdening on any one member. I opened my mouth and stuck my foot in it by mentioning I had put together a spreadsheet to track everything. Now I am on the hook to provide a user friendly version for the rest of the Virginia District chapters to use. After the busy morning, we took a break and tried to find the answers to the Superhero trivia posted around the hotel, after looking through several floors, we learned all the posted pictures were on the first floor, oh well. We thought we did pretty good, but Jim Sexton pulled a fast one and added an alternative answer that put him in a tie with one other person for getting them all correct. The Chapter Director Forum took a long time, and we all waited for Bob and Ann to get out to go to lunch. We Glenn and Nanette Mizner were honored with the company of Tommy and Gayle Wilson as well as Bob and Ann Lutton, Jim Sexton and Carol Hill joining us at McLean’s Restaurant. We went there for breakfast last year and it was outstanding. Well, there lunches are just as good. I am thinking they must have remembered us, behaving ourselves and not causing any outbursts of laughter last year, because they put us in a room all by ourselves, at first. Then one of Richmond’s finest came in with the Manager and a couple employees and start talking about some free meals going out the door. It was kind of interesting being part of a police investigation. By the time we got back to the hotel, it was time for a short nap and get ready for the evening dinner. The evening started out good, Chapter VA-B folks got split between two tables since there were 11 of us. The group preparing our meal was obviously different than the previous two years. Service to the tables was slow and sporadic at best. I will spare the rest of the ugly details, but it was some of the worst service and food I have ever seen. I know Dennis and Kristen had planned every detail of this weekend to be totally awesome. The caterers were an extreme letdown to all of us. Needless to say, the awards and honors of the evening were conducted with the flare and enthusiasm that the District staff had planned for this FUN evening. Among the awardees was the selection of Virginia District Chapter of the Year, which went to our Chesapeake neighbors, Chapter VA-L. They never did announce how many chapters participated, but I am hoping we were at least number two or three. District COY, Tammie and Ray Pierce called Nanette and I up to the stage, we took first place in the COY door decorating contest. If you didn’t attend Wingless, we had the winning door available at our March gathering. I had to make a couple more trips to the stage. Tommy and Gayle Wilson had tried to keep it a secret, but I found my name in the Region Newsletter that I had won the 4th Quarter Region N Newsletter award. They did surprise me when they called me up to take the January 2013 District award. There was one other noteworthy item, our table had pooled our money and won the 50/50 pot. That was a nice ending to the night. (Continued on Page 20) Page 19 Chapter VA-B March 13 Couple of the Year Continued (Continued from Page 19 COY Travels Cont’d! We had all decided that we needed a good meal, so all of us went to O’Charley’s just up the street for a late dinner. We got a hold of Dennis and Kristen and convinced them to come out and unwind. Jim, Carol, Nanette and I decided to buy them dinner for putting on such a great weekend. We can’t wait to see what they do next year, I wonder if it will have something to do with Looney Tunes? Weeks before Wingless, someone, I think it was Ann Lutton, suggested we all go to Maggiano’s Restaurant in Short Pump Sunday morning after Wingless. What an awesome idea. If you have never been to a Maggiano’s, it is a fantastic Italian restaurant. Great atmosphere, excellent wait staff and chefs, reasonable prices and a meal to go. The eight of us Bob and Ann Lutton, Jim Sexton and Carol Hill, Al and Karla Dobbins and Nanette and I had a great meal and then headed off to visit Chapter VA-U. Chapter VA-U’s gathering was short and sweet. The eight of us pooled our money for the 50/50 and ended up winning, but because they split the pot, we each lost about two dollars. After Chapter VA-U everyone headed home, except us. Nanette and I headed to Charlottesville for a nice evening before heading off to Arrington, Va. What’s in Arrington you ask, well, that is where they make California Sidecar trikes and trailers. That’s right, we ordered a trailer. Their salesman, Patrick Sanders gave us a great tour of their plant, showing us the beginning fiberglass molding process through painting, electrical, accessories and final assembly. If they don’t have too many orders ahead of ours, by the time you read this newsletter, we should have our trailer. The days before our Polar Bear Run we were getting our outfits together and our 50/50 sign for the Feb. 24th. We also had a newsletter to finish and Nanette offered to help Ann and Carol with the prizes. Bob and I took a ride to the American Legion Riders, Post 327 to advertise our event. I ended up joining the Post and getting a nice donation for my Tour de Cure fundraising. Polar Bear was an awesome event! It didn’t look too promising when we started setting up, it had rained most of the day before, and we actually got some sprinkles as we were setting up. But the rained stopped and cyclists started coming in, to the numbers of 175 participants. The day was still Chapter VA-B March 13 overcast until about 11 when the sun came out, and things really picked up. Lots of folks were having fun, checking out the other bikes, playing games, and stealing mascots, well one mascot anyway. Our brand new Taz that we tie-wrapped to a chair was cut loose and stuffed in a trunk. I am sure we will see him again. Anyway, we sold 1969 raffle tickets and collected $717 for the 50/50. Overall the Polar Bear was a huge success for the chapter. On Feb. 26, we went to visit Chapter VA-L. and was joined by Bob and Ann Lutton, Nick and Teresa Knox, Jim Sexton and Carol Hill. We congratulated the chapter on being named Virginia District Chapter of the Year for 2012. The next day, Nanette and I rode to Richmond to visit Chapter VA-D. It was a nice ride up route 460. We arrived just in time for the meeting to start. We were the only COY couple there beside Chapter VA-D’s Larry and Marie Crow. Christine Cunningham half of VA-K’s COY was there promoting their Chili Cook-off on March 17, Dave Miller, half of VA-U’s COY was there, as well as Susan McNeil, half of VA-W’s COY. We were thrilled to be joined by Nick Knox, Gary Spangler and Dennis Weston. Feb. 28 brought our hors d’oeuvre-dessert night at Dennis and Kristen’s home. A small turnout, but we had a good time. Kristen had to kick us out at 11 so they could get ready for work. Mar. 2 brought the next session of BLOC training at Towne Bank. Dennis told us he was presenting the Leadership seminars, so we had to show up if for no other reason than to give him a hard time. Chapter VA-B’s riding of the Polar Bear route was a chilly one, not a chili one. Nanette wasn’t feeling well, so I rode solo. There were five of us on four bikes. I had a little excitement on Head of River Road, but I will save the details for later (see page 27). We did enjoy a good lunch afterward at our favorite IHOP in Landstown commons. Glenn and Nanette Mizner VA-B, Couple of the Year Page 20 District Directors Asst District Directors, East Hey folks, March Already! Where has the time gone? We want to thank everyone that attended Wingless Weekend and we hope you had as good a time as we did. Wingless is the time when we, your District Staff, throw a party to say Thank You for all your hard work all throughout the year. We appreciate how hard everyone works at Rally in the Valley each October to show the rest of GWRRA that Virginia is the BEST District. Rally in the Valley will be upon us before you know it, and we have been in the planning stages since last year. But before Rally arrives in October is the big Wing Ding! We hope you are all planning on attending and celebrating your love for riding and socializing with the rest of your GWRRA Family. Virginia has been assigned two days to work registration, July 4 & 5, and we will need your help. Please plan on volunteering a few hours of your time and spread your Virginia cheer. Our own Tommy and Gayle Wilson will be taking part in the International Couple of the Year Selection Process. We are quite proud of all they have accomplished and continue to do, not only for Virginia, but for Region N as well. Come out and wish them your best. Additional visitation cards have been printed and are ready to be distributed. For those Chapters that didn't get any or need a few more, please shoot us an email and we'll get them right out to you. Everyone has been so great in helping get the District fundraising raffle underway, we ran out of raffle tickets! But never fear, we received a large box of them today and are now ready to send them out to all of you. Your continued support in helping us raise funds for the District benefits all our program areas. We are hoping to purchase a few new CPR dummies this year as well! A few Chapters have kicked off the riding season with their primary events already. Let's get out and support each other and have a great time doing it. If you have a flyer for your primary event and want it in the District Newsletter, send it to our illustrious Editor and she will incorporate it for you. Hope to see you all soon! Dennis and Kristen Weston Wingless Weekend has come and gone. What a great event it was this year. Everyone had lots of fun and enjoyed the weekend. We were glad to see so many participants there from the East. All of the Eastern Chapters had folks in attendance, and of course Chapter C had their now famous annual skit. Once again they walked away with honors as the best Chapter skit. You never know if it might show up on You Tube once again, so keep an eye out for it. The costumes were lots of fun to see, and it was obvious some folks put in a lot of effort to create their character. If you didn’t go this year, don’t miss out on the fun next year. Chapter L of Chesapeake was awarded the Chapter of the Year at Wingless. This is an honor for them and it shows all the hard work they’ve put in and the fun they are having at this Chapter. For those Chapters that did not participate, check with VA-L CD’s Dave and Linda Harris and ask about how they handled the necessary requirements to participate. We would like to see each Chapter try for this honor this year. Congratulations to all of Chapter L. Job well done! Debbie and I attended Chapter B’s Polar Bear event on the 24th of February. We were amazed at the participation they had for their event. It was impressive. The big difference I noticed at their event versus other events that we have attended, is the participation they receive from the non-GWRRA folks. Motorcyclists from many other groups in the area came out and showed their support. I think this is a lesson learned for all of us on how to boost participation at our own chapter events. Next time you talk to Bob and Ann Lutton in Virginia Beach, pick their brains to see how they get all of this interest generated for their event. Find out what they do differently to attract that many participants. There were around 175 folks at this event. The other GWRRA Chapters came out in full support as well. It was good to see folks from all the Eastern Chapters in attendance. It was a fun day. We also were able to attend Chapter U’s gathering this past month as well as Chapter D and Chapter C. We look forward to seeing even more of you this month. Debbie and I are having fun getting around meeting everyone and atDennis and Kristen Weston tending your gatherings and functions. We are only just Virginia District Directors starting so we look forward to getting around and seeing everybody. Ride safe and ride often. Rich and Debbie Bonham Virginia Assistant District Directors East Page 21 Rich and Debbie Bonham Chapter VA-B March 13 Region N Directors Hello Region N, Within our 26 character alphabet there are 17,576 possible three letter combinations (example: ACD). Yes, of course I’ve counted them! If we consider stretching the groupings into four (example: IDCP) and five letter (example: GWRRA) combinations, we’re up to 456,976 and 11,881,376 respectively. I really think I’ve been in gatherings and meetings and have heard every one of them used! OMG!!! And how many of us have used the acronym, WWJD, which obviously means, “What Would Jere Do?” Are we from the planet “Acron”? I know we’ve heard comments and read articles dealing with our usage of acronyms, but I’d like to revisit the subject. With the invasion of phone texting, we’ve entered another level of acronyms. It would appear that we prefer speaking in three letter combinations rather than English. While it is entertaining, confusion can be a byproduct. We catch ourselves speaking “Acronymese” to our kids and grand-kids. So you see, acronyms can send vastly different messages. Just for kicks, google “text messaging acronyms” and see how many thousands of “accepted acronyms” are being used. RUKM? I realize that we can be light-hearted about the use of acronyms, but there is a more serious side. I recently heard from a new Rider Educator, who attended her first Operations Meeting’s Rider Education break-out session. She had been around the organization for a while, but still felt like she was the only person there who didn’t understand the lingo. Speaking in acronyms has become so second nature to most of us, we don’t even consider the newbie who’s not familiar with the terms, much less the three letter snippets. And, yes I know the quick fix is to tell everyone just raise your hand and ask “what are you talking about?” (WAYTA) Sounds easy, but it shouldn’t be necessary, and can be embarrassing to think you’re the only one who doesn’t get it. I personally think it would be a great teaching technique to NEVER use acronyms when presenting a seminar or conducting a briefing. If our intention is to educate and inform, we don’t need to use language that confuses or could be misunderstood. And certainly after we’ve been around for a while, those letter combinations will be-come part of our vocabulary, but let’s be gentle and clear when speaking to groups of members. Some may be new to the organization, and our goal should be to allow every member to be a vital part of the conversation—not to leave them feeling disconnected. Sooo… HAND (Have A Nice Day), H2CUS (Hope to See You Soon), HTH (Hope This Helps), and of course HF (Have Fun). Your BFFs, Working for you, Alan and Carolyn Little Alan and Carolyn Little GWRRA Region N Directors GWRRA National News The Stone that Sharpened the Sword (Edited for space) This title is a quote from the book Wooden on Leadership by John Wooden and Steve Jamison. For those who may not recognize his name, Coach John Wooden— along with his legendary UCLA dynasty—won 10 NCAA national basketball championships in 12 years, including 88 straight games and four perfect seasons. The significance of the quote is that everyone involved with Chapter VA-B March 13 an organization plays a role in the success of that organization. A basketball teams “starting five” share most of the playing time in the game (with substitutions from the remaining team members). Though many players never actually get game time, they serve to keep the starting five sharp and successful. In other words, they serve as “the stone that sharpened the sword”. Coach Wooden wasn’t just talking about those in the spotlight but about all the others, too—the coaches, trainers, equipment managers and office personnel as well. And just like in any sports team, all the Members of GWRRA, through their support of our organization, play a role in our efforts to achieve success. “The stone that sharpened the sword” is a metaphor for our Members who can be the stones that keep our organization sharp. Now our particular organization is driven by Home Office personnel and by volunteers who serve and hold positions on International, Regional, District and Chapter levels. But, we also benefit from the participation of Members who don’t hold a particular position; plus, we have non-participating Members who enjoy their membership without involvement in Chapter Life. Speaking for those of us who do serve, we’re always looking for feedback to tell us how we can improve the GWRRA experience for everyone. Chapter Directors are also always looking for ways to make Chapter Life more rewarding, exciting, fun, and, of course, our Program Directors and Operational personnel are always looking for ways to do the same. The Home Office in Phoenix often solicits feedback from the general membership. I’ve noticed that we receive a very limited response when we ask for feedback. The Home Office sent out a Wing Ding survey about “Thoughts and trends on attendance and nonattendance of Wing Ding in the past five years”, “Location/ destination preferences”, “The effect Chapter-driven attendance has on the total attendance” and other logistical data. The survey was sent to 31,473 Members. Responses came in from 2,977 Members, a return rate of 9.5%. I am having a difficult time understanding why less than 10% would respond to something as important as this. After all, Wing Ding is our biggest international event for you, the Members! I keep asking myself, Why? Could it be that our membership really doesn’t care about providing feedback? Or could it be that they believe their voice doesn’t count? If you feel your voice, opinion, recommendations, etc., don’t count, let me assure you—you and your thoughts do count! And many times an excellent suggestion comes from just one Member’s input! One Member can make a difference, so I’m asking for your help going forward. Please take a few moments to participate in the GWRRA surveys and feel free to share your thoughts—regardless of whether or not they’re solicited. Coach Wooden focused on the totality of the team effort rather than on any one individual. No matter how good an individual player is, it still takes everyone involved to win. The player who contributes the assist is just as important as the one who scores the basket. The player who sits on the bench without playing time, but who has helped to hone and sharpen team skills, is an equal contributor to the team’s success. Let’s use Coach Wooden’s example when considering the effectiveness of the Home Office and all our volunteers; we can’t succeed without you—the Member! Your thoughts on what’s working well and on what you’d like to see instead can help us develop a winning Association! If we— the Home Office and the volunteers—are the “sword”, then please be the “stone” that sharpens us! Ride safe; be well. And, as always, remember that fun shall be the last word—so HAVE FUN! Jere Goodman Director GWRRA Page 22 Ride Coordinator Let’s talk camping! Hopefully by the time you read this newsletter we will have solidified this year’s camping adventures. First up is Memorial Day weekend (May 24 to 27) at Lake Anna. We will be staying at Christopher Run Campground again. If you have not talked to Dennis Weston about a campsite, you will Jim Sexton and Carol Hill need to make your own reservations. There are some hotel/cabins in the area if you do not want to camp. The very next weekend, May 31 to June 2 there are two events. One is Chapter VAY’s Bill Miller Memorial Ride that has camping available. The other at the Hillbilly Hoedown at Catawba Meadows Park in Morgantown, NC, sponsored by NC-P-2 and NC-Y. In June, we have the West Virginia Rally June 13 to 16. We will probably stay at Mountain Lake Campground, we stayed there last year. The following weekend June 20 to 23, we are planning a trip back to West Virginia to stay at Watoga State Park and enjoy some great riding. There is nothing scheduled in July as of now, but that could change. In August we are doing the VA-X and VA-R overnighter, Aug 3 to4. We stayed at Dixie Caverns last year, it is not a bad campground, it is just close to I-81 and a little noisy all night. But if we can find a better campground not too far away, we could relocate. September brings VA-C’s Fall Sprawl in the Northern Neck, Sep. 6 to 7. They offer primitive camping, but everyone always says they have a great time. These are the ones that we have been looking at this year, if you want to add to the list you need to come to the camping meeting or get in touch with me or Bob Lutton. If you want to be in on the details, make sure we add you to the camping email list. If you just want to go along and have some fun, I suggest you keep up on our campers. Jim Sexton Chapter VA-B Ride Coordinator Chapter of the Year Coordinator Can you believe its March already? It won’t be long before Matt and I return home from Japan. We hope things are going great for all back home. We are expecting a Diana Merciez package any day now with something rare that needs to travel Japan before returning to the states. Hopefully we can get some good pictures for future newsletters. Anyway, I have been getting some updates for our Chapter of the Year package, but I want everyone to make sure I get information on rides, events, visits, Motorist Awareness presentations, recruiting events, and any GWRRA training. You can e-mail everything to [email protected]. Thanks, Diana Merciez Chapter VA-B CHOY Coordinator Page 23 Chapter VA-B March 13 A Little Fun for when you’re bored Do you know your Virginia GWRRA? All levels of licensed riders can experience a new level of advanced braking performance on a large motorcycle simply by applying the brakes normally and firmly. The system is designed to electronically distribute front and rear braking forces to facilitate smooth braking Dave Hunter without wheel lock. The average rider may apply either the front or rear brake more and faster than the other. As a result, the combination of braking forces on the front and rear wheels can vary by rider. Combined ABS was developed to combine front and rear braking forces and helps reduce differences in braking practices. Now, Electronically Controlled Combined ABS employs advanced electronic control to combine and distribute front and rear braking forces, allowing licensed riders of all levels to experience super sports bike braking as they never have before. In contrast to conventional systems, Electronically Controlled Combined ABS features ultra-precise control of brake fluid pressure that helps prevent wheel lock. As a result, the system minimizes vehicle vibration and eliminates brake lever pulsing for superior, ultra-smooth ABS performance and braking. Electronically Controlled Combined ABS allows riders to apply precise rear-wheel braking with the foot pedal. Application of the rear brake does not result in immediate front brake activation unless rear-wheel lockup is sensed, allowing an experienced rider to use the rear brake like a traditional non-linked unit during spirited riding such as track days for outstanding speed, suspension and steering control. Dave Hunter Technical Advisor, VA-B March Gathering Information If you missed the March gathering, here is the scoop. We had a lot of fun and a lot of visitors at the March gathering. Carol Hill announced the visitors: Bobby and Jan Gunther, they became our newest members on March 14, they ride a 1986 pearl ivory and tan SEI. John Dugan from a Georgia chapter (a prospective Roy and Cynthia Wilde transfer to VA-B and visitors from VA-L, VA-O, and NC-E2. Bob Lutton thanked everyone for their support of our Polar Bear Run, the chapter members for their support of making it a great day, the great sponsors who provided food and prizes, and the 175 registered participants representing over 15 different motorcycle groups. A good time was had at Glenn Mizner’s expense regarding his Polar Bear Plunge (see pictures on page 27). Nick Knox filled in for John Bowles as the Educator, he talked about preparing for spring riding. We also talked about Wingless Weekend and the awesome time we had. First-timers Roy and Cynthia Wilde we overwhelmed that they were treated as one of the family. We are glad they were able to come and enjoy the festivities. A camping meeting was discussed, as well as dinner at out at Il Giardino’s on March 24, and an ice cream social at the Mizner’s on March 28. Page 25 Chapter VA-B March 13 From the Desk of the Editor Hey all, With Wingless Weekend and the Polar Bear Run both in the same month, it sure makes for a packed newsletter. For those who didn’t attend the “mandatory FUN” weekend in Richmond, you missed out. There is hardly a dull moment from arrival to departure. This year, some of Chapter VA-B extended it to include a trip to Maggiano's Restaurant in Short Pump for lunch followed by attending Chapter VA-U’s gathering. The Polar Bear Run definitely exceeded our expectations, 175 participants was Glenn Mizner totally awesome. The weather in the morning was not promising, but the day turned out bright and sunny. One of my highlights for the month was being called to the stage, for the second year in a row by the way, to accept the District Newsletter award for January 2013. Then Tommy and Gayle Wilson called me up a second time to receive the 4th Quarter of 2012 Region N Newsletter award. I am truly honored to receive these awards. I enjoy putting the monthly newsletters together an plan to continue doing so as long as I keep getting the support of the chapter. Till next month, send me your thoughts and memories. While we were out riding the Polar Bear Route on Sunday, Mar. 3, I was third in a group of four bikes. We were cooking along about 45 miles per hour on Land of Promise Road almost to Blackwater Road, we were coming into a left-hand curve and though I was on a good line to enter the curve, I looked over at my GPS to see the map of the road ahead. When I looked back at the road I had already started toward the edge of the road. At this point I had a choice, try to correct left which would have took me into the other lane where a car coming the other direction from around the bend could have been more trouble, or just stay on the course to the ditch. The bike went about 40 feet or so in the ditch before I got it stopped. As you can see from the pictures, it was quite deep and very muddy. While I was on the phone with Rescue Plus, several Good Citizens stopped to offer help. Meanwhile, Jim Sexton was on the phone to Bob Lutton to have him come out with his truck. It must have been the fourth or fifth person that actually had a tow rope. It didn’t take long to get it out of the ditch with Paul Siska, Jim, and I guiding the bike out of the ditch. The first person that happened along was one of the new owners of Honda of Norfolk, Larry. Lessons learned: It only took a second or two to lose sight of where I wanted to be and go that can put anyone in the ditch, or worse! Fortunately for me, there was no damage to the bike, or me. But it took a lot of cleaning to clear all the mud and muck out from under the bike. The other lesson, Rescue Plus considered this a “recovery” which is not covered under the Rescue Plus policy. If I would have said I needed a tow, they would have sent a flatbed tow truck that could have pulled me out of the ditch. I think our Educator, John Bowles was taking pictures and notes for an upcoming newsletter article while we waited to get the bike out of the ditch.
