There is room for notes on these pages, so you may concentrate on the content of the lecture, and you don’t have to type or write like mad, just to get the information down. The files are also available in PDF-Format either through your course-leaders or on our website. This method goes along with some “working papers” on a given book (eg. Ephesians or Philemon etc.), so some more “Material” is used in order to learn how do work this way of studying. Just a word about this method: In Youth with a Mission we call this method the “inductive approach to biblestudy”, or simply “inductive biblestudy”. There are also other possible names for this way of working when you study your Bible. Some decades ago also the term “critical biblestudy” was used for example. The following explanation is a “simple” way of using this method, in a setting that would allow you to do your studies besides any other work or job. So we are talking about what would be possible for someone to do in his or her spare time. Still this would mean to invest time and energy, but cleary in a limited way. While this method is the same as in the Schools of Biblical Studies in principle, it is not the same in terms of depth or investment of time. So in the School of Biblical Studies, we would go much deeper especially in analyzing paragraphs (will be explained) than in this simplified method here. Our concern for setting up this “simplified version” was: how could someone with a limited amount of available time still study the Bible inductively, and how could this be communicated in a simple way to people who are not trained in acedemic studies? The result is summed up in these pages. Of course we continually work on this, as we have used this method for many years now in various church settings in Switzerland, but so far the use of this method by many and various people and their feedback has shown that this is a practicable way of doing Bible Study. It is by far not the only way, of this we are aware, but it is none the less a very thorough way and it has helped many people to find a new approach of studying their Bibles and discovering the relevant message of the Bible for their own lives and the life of the Church. This way it is at least a valid contribution to the fact that many people do not know how they could read or study their Bibles, but still live with the permanent challenge, that they should none the less do it. Read the book paragraph by paragraph & give each paragraph a title (max. 4/5 words, unchanged & out the respective paragrap) Read again paragraph by paragraph and observe: Interpret • What language is being used - what DOES the text say? (Prose or Poetry? Theological statements? Exhortation or Command? Narrative? Parable? Prophecy? Song?) • What is going on IN the text - what is the CONTENT? (Who does what, to whom, when, where, why, how and with what Result? - and possibly more questions) Language Read once more paragr. by paragr. & work on the meaning ? • • What DID the terms used MEAN? (Terms, figures of speech or rhetorical figures?) What DID the text MEAN in history or culture THEN? (People, Times, Places) Meaning After some paragr.: How are they structured, connected? • How is the text structured, arranged, arguments? Structure (Comparison, Contrast, Repetition, Emphasis or DeEmphasis, Continuity - where do themes end, Summary Sentences) Synthesis Synthetic Method Apply As you work: Be open for God to speak to you through various passages. Whatever he says, or you believe he says, write it down, to be able to think and pray about this & to see if he is confirming it later. Observe Read the WHOLE book again and aks some more questions: keeping in mind what you have discovered so far: • How is the whole book structured? (Topical, Chronolog., Geograph., Biograph., Logical, in Letter-, Drama-, or Poetic Form or as Anthology?) • Answer the remaining open questions of the Survey Method • If possible draw a visual Chart of the book (Horizont. Either you may want to use the books while working on your Bibletext, or you may want to read them for Background information or some extra studies. These books are in general not very complicated, yet you will have to actively think along as you read. In terms of Language they are reasonably simple to understand, and they are good tools for Biblestudy. New Bible Dictionary (Recommended for the b-sbs or the sbs) Ein kompaktes, einbändiges Lexikon, welches sich vorzüglich als Arbeitsbuch für das Bibelstudium eignet. Mehr als 6000 Artikel zu Geschichte, Archäologie, Personen und Geographie der Bibel. Das Lexikon wird laufend nachgeführt und überarbeitet und ist somit auf einem guten, modernen Stand. Natürlich hat das Lexikon als einbändiges Werk vom Volumen her seine Grenzen, aber es ist trotzdem ein sehr umfassendes Werk und genügt allemal für das persönliche Bibelstudium.
