Stonger, Lay Minister Gioia Zack, Director of Religious Education Peter Turczanik, Sacristan Stephen Kitsock, Assistant Sacristan January, 2015 Dear members of the Cathedral parish and friends, Each year our parish offers you an overview report of the Cathedral parish, its parish groups, organizations and ministries. We also report highlights of the sacramental life of the parish and the state of its finances. This year marked the culmination of an extensive series of renovations to the main level of the Cathedral. The groundbreaking for the new addition to the Cathedral on September 24, 2014 was a milestone in the long awaited provision of handicap-accessible access to, and bathrooms for, the Cathedral. .... Together with prior renovations, including the erection of permanent altars (after fifty years with “temporary” ones) in the main sanctuary and the Blessed Sacrament chapel, the creation of a Baptistry incorporating the beautiful baptismal font that had been in the lower Cathedral, the installation of a new technologically advanced sound system and the change to energy-efficient lighting, the annex symbolizes the Cathedral’s deep commitment to build continually on its proud tradition as it looks to the future and its tremendous spirit that is so characteristic of our parish community. That spirit, of course, lies fundamentally not in our beautiful Cathedral building but in the faith and commitment of our parish family. Sister Ann Marie Strileckis continues to work diligently as our pastoral associate. Her organizational skills and dedication to pastoral care have had a significant impact on the parish. Those who have worked with Sister Ann Marie on any of the countless activities in which she has been involved can attest to her enthusiasm and dedication. Many of you have spoken of the joy engendered by the exquisite liturgies that are the hallmark of our parish. These beautiful celebrations would not be possible without the talent and dedication of Ezequiel Menéndez our organist and music director, as well as our music administrative assistants Kevin Andersen and Marianne Moliné, Edward Bolkowic our choirmaster, Sarah Gedicks, our superb cantor, and our wonderful choir. Ezequiel has 5 1 5 5 5 contributed enormously to the prayerfulness of our liturgies. David Weber’s technological expertise continues to be an invaluable asset in bringing out the finest in our sound system. No mention of our liturgies would be complete, however, without acknowledging those who work behind the scenes. The great competence and selfless dedication of our sacristans Peter Turczanik and Steven Kitsock, have provided an invaluable contribution to the quality of our liturgies as have the diligent efforts of our maintenance staff: Mark Fluckiger, the plant manager, and George Kelly, Virginia Abel and Ghulam Raziq, his dedicated co-workers.. Of course the life of the parish extends beyond its prayer life. This annual report reflects to some extent the many activities that energize our parish. Claude-Evelyne Odiaka, our parish secretary, combines outstanding competence with a profound pastoral sense to welcome and assist both parishioners and strangers to the parish. Gioia Zack continues to lead our religious education program with energy and creativity. Judith Stonger, Leah Stroman and Sister Janice Kidney, R.S.M. have shared with the participants in our RCIA program an enthusiasm for the Catholic faith that is an inspiration to us all. Eileen Morse spearheads our food pantry, a fine example of our commitment to social justice. The Cathedral Council of the Knights of Columbus, and its Grand Knight Mike McGarry, have enhanced our parish life in countless creative ways. Pat and Jed Conran have continued to work tirelessly within our parish and beyond in support of the pro-life movement. Mike Quinn has demonstrated both enthusiasm and efficiency in organizing our annual Homefront project. Marilyn and George Dumas and Dolores Bentley work tirelessly in organizing the sandwich ministry which provides crucial assistance to the needy in our neighborhood. Hazel Vail and all the members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry provide spiritual and emotional support to all whose lives they touch. Julie Mullen, Pattilynn Conard and the entire Decorating Committee work tirelessly to delight us with beautiful and creative settings for our liturgies, particularly at Christmas and Easter. Bob Mullen continually captures that beauty in his exquisite photographs. We are most grateful as well to Father Daniel Akho for his tireless work with the Karen community within our parish and for his assistance with our parish liturgies and, of course, to Monsignor David Liptak for his generosity in sharing his time, wisdom, and sense of commitment with us. We are most fortunate to have both of them as members of our parish family. In closing, I want to express my deepest gratitude to you, the members of the parish. The diversity, enthusiasm, commitment and spirituality that you embody make the Cathedral parish a unique and very special place. May God continue to bless us and guide us as we enter 2015. With gratitude and sincere thanks, Rev. Msgr. John J. John Barry, Rick Bayna, Claire Bergin, Louis Boudreau, James Lynch, Eileen B. Morse, Robert Mullen, Mike Quinn, Hector Robles, Eileen Russo, Mark Saur, Judith Stonger, Sr. Ann Marie Strileckis, CND, and Gerard Yengue Cathedral Music Ministry Under the supervision of Archdiocesan Director of Music, Dr. Ezequiel Menéndez, the Cathedral Music Ministry provides music for liturgies for both the Cathedral parish and the Archdiocese of Hartford. The Cathedral of Saint Joseph’s music ministry has gained recognition as one of the leading programs, not only in Connecticut, but also in the nation. During the past year of 2014, the Cathedral Youth Choir programs have been expanded and reorganized. Professor Brian Gedicks, who founded the Archdiocesan Youth Choir (AYC) and conducted for the first 2 years, has passed the baton to Maestra Alice Matteson. A word of gratitude to Brian, for this legacy that will remain for many generations. In addition to Choirmaster of the AYC, Ms. Matteson is Coordinator of the Youth Music Ministries. She has grown the membership of the AYC and expanded the Cathedral Youth Choir to all young people who attend the Cathedral of St. Joseph. The Cathedral Youth Choir rehearses from 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, formed into three choirs based upon age: The Primary Ensemble, Genesis Choir, for young people entering the First through Third Grades. The Intermediate Ensemble , Gaudete Choir, for young people entering the Fourth through Sixth Grades The Senior Ensemble ,Hosanna Choir, for young people entering the Seventh through Tenth Grades. Choir members work on the fundamentals of vocal production, rhythm, and music notation. All choirs come together, along with the AYC, to sing for the Children’s Liturgies throughout the year. The purpose of the Cathedral Youth Choir is to prepare the young people to full and active participation in liturgical celebrations. It is required that all those enrolled in the Religious Education Program participate in the Cathedral Youth Choir, however, it is open to all young people interested in participating. Under the direction of Dr. Edward Bolkovac, the Cathedral Schola Cantorum sings at the 11:00 a.m. Liturgy on Sundays, and for special Liturgies and Sacred Concerts. The Cathedral Schola Cantorum consists of twenty-four professional singers. The choir maintains a very high standard of musical excellence. In addition to the Cathedral Choir, there are two instrumental ensembles: the Soli Deo Gloria Orchestra and the Cathedral Brass Quintet; both consisting of professional area musicians. The Cathedral Music Ministry also administers the Archdiocesan Concert Series Sacred Sounds. Beginning with a successful series of organ recitals by such noted performers as Gerre Hancock, Olivier Latry, Daniel Roth, and James David Christie, Sacred Sounds has expanded to include performances by the Hartford, New Haven, and Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestras, the New Haven Chorale, and members of the Cathedral’s own choir, most recently in a performance of Mozart’s Requiem given by the chorus of Connecticut Lyric Opera and the Connecticut Virtuosi. Sacred Sounds is pleased to announce that the Connecticut Virtuosi will be returning for several concerts this season with Prayers in Opera, on March 21, 2015, 7:00 p.m. and Beethoven Piano Concerti, Nos. 1 & 3 and Symphony No. 8 on April 18, 2015, 7:00 p.m. conducted by Meastro Adrian Sylveen. 5 5 5 5 5 Archdiocesan Director of Music and Cathedral Organist, Dr. Ezequiel Menéndez Choirmaster, Dr. Edward Bolkovac Music Librarian Administrative Assistant , Mr. Kevin J.
