Live Music Now's Songs and Scones programme brings together older people who live on their own in the
community or in care homes for an afternoon of music, tea and conversation. Each session begins with an
informal participatory concert led by Live Music Now young professional musicians, trained to work with older
communities and those living with dementia, followed by time for refreshments and socialising. Presenting the
music in the form of a regular social event and giving everyone an active choice of programme provides an
excellent forum to make new friends, build optimism, confidence and self-esteem.
The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust has supported Live Music Now since 1996 and this year a grant of £4,000 is
supporting Songs and Scones in care and community settings across London.

Historical Background
The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust was founded by the late Dame Bridget D’Oyly Carte, DBE in
1972 as an endowed grant-making foundation.
Dame Bridget was the grand-daughter of Richard D’Oyly Carte, the theatrical impresario who
famously built and opened the Savoy Theatre in 1881 and the Savoy Hotel in 1889. She was
a Director and Vice-Chairman of The Savoy Group (which included the Savoy Hotel and the
Savoy Theatre) and established The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust to support her personal
interests - other than the Gilbert & Sullivan operas. Certain charities in which she took a
special interest during her lifetime continue to be supported by the Trustees.
1998 marked a turning point in the history of the Trust when the Trustees, after taking legal
and financial advice, and with the approval of the Charity Commissioners, agreed to sell their
shares in The Savoy Hotel PLC (The Savoy Group) to Blackstone Hotel Acquisitions Company at
a total price of £39,043,535. This sum formed the capital assets of the Trust which have since
been invested in a diversified portfolio of investments.
Over the years the Trustees have sought to uphold the aims, interests and values of the
Trust’s benefactor, while adapting to the changing needs of the modern charitable world.
They feel privileged and proud to be able to support such a diverse range of charities seeking
in some way to improve people’s lives.

Governing Document
The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust became a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2005. In
November that year a new company (No. 5638406 Registered in England) was set up and
subsequently registered by the Charity Commission as The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust
under Charity Registration No. 1112457 in December 2005.
The Company is governed by a Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 14th
September 2005 and the operations and assets transferred to the Company as from 1st April,
2006. The initial members of the Company were the subscribers to the Memorandum and
Articles of Association, and, in relation to the Companies Act 2006, the Trustees are also
Directors of the Company.
Measuring Impact and Public Benefit
As a grant-making Trust, providing public benefit is at the heart of the Trust’s activity, as
demonstrated in the pages that follow in this Report. In exercising their powers and duties,
the Trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity
Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Trust’s aims and
objectives and in planning future activities and setting grant making policy.
Charitable Objective
The Trust’s objective is to make grants to Registered Charities concerned with the
advancement of such exclusively charitable objects as the Trustees shall from time to time
determine, in particular (but not limited to) the advancement of the arts, health and medical
welfare and environmental protection or improvement, especially within the priorities of its
grants policy.
The review of the past year on pages 17-37 and the full list of grants on pages 47 to 59
demonstrate that this objective continues to be achieved.
The majority of the Trust’s grant-making is reactive and is measured against what individual
charities are seeking to achieve. In most cases The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust is one of
several funders and cannot therefore take sole credit for the outcomes achieved.
The Trustees aim to create impact by supporting work that changes people’s lives for the
better and this is where public benefit is most directly achieved.

Grant-making Priorities 2015-18
Notwithstanding the Trust’s overall charitable objectives for the public benefit, the Trustees
regularly review their policies, objectives and guidelines, and, following a full review in
November 2014, determined that their grant-making priorities for the three years 2015-2018
would focus on:The Arts

Promotion of access, education and excellence in the arts for young people to increase
their opportunities to become involved outside school and to build future audiences
with special emphasis on choral singing for children and young people to encourage
recruitment into choirs

Access to the arts for people who have least access to them

Performance development opportunities in the performing arts for those in the early
stages of their careers, encouraging involvement in the community through
performances and workshops for the benefit of those with special needs and those
who would otherwise have no opportunity to hear or participate in a live performance

Support for charities seeking to engage with young people on the fringes of society
through music and drama projects to improve their employability and diminish the risk
of social exclusion
Medical Welfare

Provision of music and art therapy to improve the quality of life for the elderly and the
disabled, and in palliative care and in hospices, especially hospices operating in low
income and/or remote parts of the UK

Support for charities concerned with alleviating the suffering of adults and children
with medical conditions who have difficulty finding support through traditional sources

The welfare of those who care for others through the provision of holidays for those
carers who wouldn’t normally have a break from their responsibilities – and with
emphasis on projects and schemes that allow young carers to enjoy being children

Support for charities seeking to rehabilitate young people on the fringes of society to
improve their employability and diminish the risk of social exclusion
The D‘Oyly Carte Charitable Trust is a Company Limited by Guarantee No. 5638406 Registered in England and Wales
Charity Registration No. 1112457
7
The Environment

Conservation of the countryside and its woodlands, with emphasis on the
encouragement of voluntary work and active involvement in hands-on activities,
particularly activities that bring about positive changes in the lives of young people

Protection of species within the UK and their habitats under threat or in decline

Heritage conservation within the UK based on value to, and use by the local
community – the Trust favours projects that seek to create a new use for fine buildings
of architectural and historic merit to encourage the widest possible cross-section of
use. The Trust does not normally support major restorations but may support a
specific element if identified as appropriate to the aims of the Trust

Rural crafts and skills in heritage conservation, with emphasis on increasingly rare skills
that would otherwise be lost

Social and therapeutic horticulture: projects that use gardening or other
environmental activities to bring about positive changes in the lives of those who are
living with disabilities or ill-health
For projects working with children and young people, or vulnerable adults, it is the applicant
charity’s responsibility to have correct and up-to-date policies and procedures in place.

Trustees
The Governing Document allows for up to a maximum of ten and a minimum of three
Trustees (also Directors for the purpose of company law) and those Trustees who served
during the year were Jeremy Leigh Pemberton, CBE, DL (Chairman), Henry Freeland RIBA,
Andrew Jackson, Dr. Michael O’Brien, FRCP, Francesca Radcliffe, Julia Sibley MBE and Andrew
Wimble who succeeded Jeremy Leigh Pemberton as Chairman of the Investment Committee
in October 2015. Jeremy Leigh Pemberton remains a member of the Investment Committee
with Julia Sibley.
The Trustees are also the Members of the Company and, under the terms of its Articles,
every Member promises, if the Charity is dissolved while he or she remains a member, or
within 12 months afterwards, to pay up to £10 towards the costs of dissolution and the
liabilities incurred by the Charity while he or she was a member.

Trustees are selected based on the knowledge and skills they can contribute to the aims of
the Trust. Potential Trustees are interviewed by the Chairman, one other Trustee and the
Executive Director, and a recommendation is then placed before the Board of Trustees for
approval. All Trustees are experienced and actively involved with other charities and give
their time voluntarily, receiving no financial benefit from the charity.
During the year, Trustees attended a range of charity governance and investment seminars,
and, amongst many others, Jeremy Leigh Pemberton attended the annual seminar for Charity
Trustees hosted by Cazenove Capital Management and Andrew Wimble attended the 13th
Charity Finance Charity Investment Forum.
Governance
The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust is committed to applying the highest standards of ethical
conduct and integrity in its business activities. The Trustees, also being Directors of the
Company, and the Executive Director (the Company Secretary), recognise their duty to ensure
that the charity is compliant with the law and are committed to good governance and to
implementing and enforcing effective systems throughout the organisation to prevent any
improper conduct arising in their business dealings.
Against the background of the Trust’s work as defined in its objects, the Trustees consider
that the risk of the charity contravening The Bribery Act 2010 to be very small. For the
avoidance of doubt, however, The Trustees of The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust expressly
prohibit anyone associated with the charity from offering, giving, soliciting or accepting any
bribe (of whatever nature) in order to advantage in any way the charity, applicant charities,
themselves or persons/businesses connected with either.
Hospitality Register
A Hospitality Register is maintained to record visits made by Trustees and staff to grant
beneficiaries to whom grants are made or from whom grants are requested so as to monitor
performance and standards in relation to grants made or applications received.
Register of Trustees’ Interests
In accordance with the Charity Commissioners’ recommendation that charity trustees who
may have a personal interest in any matter before the trustees should declare that interest
and refrain from taking part in any discussion relating to it, a Register of Trustees’ interests is
maintained and updated annually. Trustees are required to disclose all relevant interests and
register them with the Executive Director, and, in accordance with the Trust’s policy,
withdraw from decisions where a conflict of interest arises.

In addition, the connection of any Trustee with any application for a grant is not only noted in
the papers circulated prior to a Trustee meeting but also declared at the meeting and
recorded in the minutes of the meeting afterwards. Any such Trustee takes no part in any
decision regarding any such application.
Appointment of Auditor
Baker Tilly Audit UK LLP was reappointed as Auditor for the year ended 31st March 2015.
Management
The Trust is operated from offices managed by The Savoy and the Trustees continue to be
grateful for the facilities made available to them.
The day to day management of the Trust’s business is carried out by the Executive Director
whose remuneration for the time she spends in managing the Trust’s affairs is charged
through The Savoy. The Executive Director is neither a Trustee nor a Director of the
Company.
During the year the Trust developed a bespoke version of the Salesforce Customer
Relationship Management (CRM) system suitable for grant-makers, with support from The
Trust Partnership. This system now replaces the Trust’s old Access database, and a
new online application and reporting system via the Trust’s website
www.doylycartecharitabletrust.org became available from 1st April 2015.
It is anticipated that the Salesforce CRM will significantly streamline the Trust’s grant
administration and at the same time provide improved analytical tools for impact reporting.
Salesforce is a powerful cloud-based CRM system configured to manage the Trust’s complete end-to-end
grant process. It is both highly secure and easily accessible from anywhere with an internet connection.
Applications are received through an online form with Salesforce tracking where the applications are
within the Trust’s grant process. Reports, documentation, reminders and letters are easily produced. The
Salesforce Foundation donates systems with ten user licences free to registered charities.
The Trust’s accounting function has been outsourced to The Trust Partnership since 1st
February 2013 and from the 1st April 2015 The Trust Partnership will also become responsible
for the administration of grant applications under the guidance of the Executive Director.
The Trust Partnership is a specialist organisation with a diverse range of service offerings for trusts and grant making
charities. With a flexible approach to clients’ requirements, its ‘shared services’ infrastructure aims to reduce costs and
increase efficiency.
Its services to charities include Charity Administration, Grant Management, Book-keeping and
Accounting.

The Year under Review
For the year ended 31st March 2015, total incoming resources amounted to £1,557,171
compared to £1,361,483 in the previous year, an increase of 14.4%.
Grants agreed during the year amounted to £1,118,643, a slight decrease of 11% compared to
the previous year when grants totalling £1,257,351 were agreed.
Support costs increased during the year from £55,685 to £57,401 (an increase of 3.1%) and
there was also a 39.8% increase in Governance costs from £27,812 in 2013/14 to £38,893,
due largely to investment review consultancy fees (see page 15) and IT costs relating to the
Trust’s new website and the implementation of online application.
Costs of Generating Funds (Investment Management fees) increased by 5.4% from £181,890
in 2013/14 to £191,795 in the year under review.

Application Procedure
The Trustees make grants for charitable activity which they hope will improve the quality of
life for people, especially those who are disadvantaged in some way.
The Trustees
concentrate this activity by supporting charities in specific areas of interest connected with
the arts, medical welfare and the environment, as reflected in their Grant-making Priorities.
The Trust invites applications from charities whose operational area is within the United
Kingdom. The majority of applications are considered by the Trustees three times a year in
March, July and November. Applications from individuals are not considered.
From 1st April 2015 registered charities wishing to apply for a grant are requested to do so
online via the Trust’s website www.doylycartecharitabletrust.org. Applicants are required to
study the Trust’s online Guidelines before submitting an application to ensure full compliance
and an eligibility portal indicates whether an application can proceed to the online application
form.
Once an application has been submitted via the website an automatically generated response
will confirm receipt to the applicant, with a copy of their application. Full guidance is
available on the website, and, if needed, additional help can be obtained by telephone from
the Grants Administrator on 0203 637 3003 or by email [email protected].
As the Trust receives a very large number of applications, and inevitably is unable to respond
positively to each and every one, a filtering system is operated. Each application is fully
assessed and those deemed to merit further consideration are discussed by the Trustees at
one of their three grant-making meetings throughout the year in March, July and November.
The majority of grants awarded by the Trust are on a one-off basis although term grants are
occasionally agreed for a maximum period of three years, particularly in respect of bursary
funding for arts education.
The Trustees have continued their commitment to make grants to charities that do not enjoy
a high profile in order to create significant impact on the work of the charity concerned; and,
recognising the day-to-day funding needs of charities, the Trustees continue to consider
applications for core costs.
Further information on grants made during the year follows in the Grant Activity section of
this report and a full list of grants appears at the end of the financial section.

Grant Monitoring and Evaluation
The public benefit of funding by the Trust is measured against the achievements of the
charities funded by the Trust. Grant recipients are required to meet the Trust’s reporting
requirements, which are communicated when a grant is awarded.
The Trust’s grant monitoring and reporting process through its website aims to be ‘light
touch’ and is intended to give Trustees an idea of what each grant has achieved.
The Trust seeks to avoid a disproportionate reliance on complex procedures both in the
application process and in systematic attempts to evaluate the benefit achieved by its grants.
The benefit of understanding the impact of a small grant that has made a huge difference to
someone’s quality of life is often outweighed by the effort in attempting to prove it. The
Trustees endorse the belief that a good relationship between the funder and the funded
should be based on trust and mutual respect on both sides.
Grant recipients are required to submit their report on the benefit achieved by the Trust’s
grants online through the Trust’s website www.doylycartecharitabletrust.org within twelve
months of receiving their grant; and, as many of the Trust’s grants are contributions to
projects also supported by one or several other donors, we happily accept information that
has been prepared for another funder if this is appropriate.
Above all, it is the guiding policy of the Trustees to make the best possible use of the Trust’s
resources in supporting a wide cross-section of charitable activities within the Trust’s stated
remit. The Trustees hope that they achieve this successfully by making carefully considered
grant decisions and by seeking to ensure that their grants are used effectively without
imposing disproportionate reporting conditions on grantees.
The move to online application and reporting is an important component of the Trust’s
succession planning and upgrading processes as new cost-effective support and technology
becomes available.
It is anticipated that not only will the new Salesforce CRM system make the application
process more streamlined and accessible for grant seekers but it will also improve
accessibility to valuable information for the Trustees which will greatly assist them in their
decision-making and in monitoring and evaluating the benefit of their grants.

14
Investment Management
The Trustees have the power to delegate discretionary powers of investment and all
investments held by the Trust have been acquired in accordance with these powers.
The Investment Committee meets at the end of each quarter during the year and reports to
each of the three Trustee meetings throughout the year. Investment Managers are in
attendance at all four Investment Committee meetings at the end of each quarter to report
on the performance of the funds under their management.
The value of the portfolio at the end of the year was:
As at 31st March 2015
£51,457,505
As at 31st March 2014
£48,321,611
Mindful of their obligation under the Trustee Act 2000 to conduct periodic independent
investment reviews, during the year the Trustees instructed Portfolio Review Services to
carry out a full evaluation of their investment management in October 2014. As a result,
Cazenove Capital Management (CCM) was reappointed and Investec Wealth & Investment
Ltd. was appointed to take over the portfolio hitherto managed by Lazard Asset Management.
The portfolio was transferred to Investec at the beginning of February 2015.
Subject to satisfactory service and performance, the Trust’s Investment Managers are
reappointed on an annual basis.
Investment Policy and Objectives
The Trust’s investment performance objectives are ‘to provide for increases in annual grant
giving while preserving the fund’s capital base in real terms, using a total return approach’.
Funds are invested by the Investment Managers to maximize total return while providing a
level of income agreed annually by the Trustees. This policy allows the Trustees to draw on
capital in order to meet the annual spending target and helps mitigate the impact of any
decrease in income.
The Trustees have an Investment Policy in place with their Investment Managers, which is
reviewed annually by the Investment Committee and by the Trustees.
Financial Review
Equity markets continued to make progress during the year with the FTSE All Share returning
+6.6% to 31st March 2015. Overseas equity markets generated impressive returns with the
MSCI World Index returning +19.1%, predominately lead by the United States.
The D‘Oyly Carte Charitable Trust is a Company Limited by Guarantee No. 5638406 Registered in England and Wales
Charity Registration No. 1112457
15
After generating a negative return in the previous year, Gilts returned +13.9% as the 10 year
Government Bond yield moved from 2.7% to 1.6% over the year, primarily due to weak
European and Chinese growth and falls in the oil price. Cash returns have again been minimal
with the UK base rate remaining stable at +0.5% p.a.
Over the year to 31st March 2015 the portfolio managed by CCM produced a total return of
+9.4% compared with the long-term target of RPI + 4% p.a. which returned +4.9%. The
portfolio has a diversified spread of assets, investing in a combination of equities, bonds,
absolute return, property, private equity, commodities and cash designed to maintain the real
capital value whilst generating a stable and sustainable level of income to fund grant making.
The portfolio has a lower projected level of volatility (or risk) than an all-equity portfolio, due
to the diverse asset allocation.
The portfolio managed by Lazard, which was fully invested in the Lazard Diversified Charity
Fund until the end of January 2015, had a benchmark of 50% FTSE All-Share Index, 25% MSCI
All Countries World Index and FTSE World ex UK Index and 25% FTA British Govt. All Stocks
Index. At the end of Q3 the portfolio had returned 6.26%, marginally underperforming its
custom benchmark return of 6.67%.
Following the Trustees’ decision to move the portfolio managed by Lazard to Investec Wealth
& Investment Ltd., the transfer took place at the beginning of February 2015 and was fully
reinvested by year-end within the agreed benchmark of 50% FTSE All-Share Index, 25% FTSE
World ex UK Index, 20% FTA British Govt. All Stocks Index and 5% IPD Property Index.
Reserves Policy
The Trust Fund represents an amount allocated by the Trustees to secure the long term
future of the Charity by ensuring there are adequate resources to meet the Charity’s
anticipated charitable obligations. The Trust Fund is held as a buffer to ensure that grant
levels are maintained in the event of a sudden loss of income or unexpected expenditure.
It is the policy of the Trustees to award grants on the basis of the net surplus before
realised/unrealised gains, thereby protecting a core of investments and cash assets to
generate income for future years’ grant awards. The Trustees will continue to review the
level of grants they make on an annual basis.
Internal Controls
The Trustees have a duty to ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to
safeguard the Trust’s assets. The Investment Committee is empowered by the Trustees to
ensure that appropriate internal controls are implemented and monitored and that the risks
are managed and controlled. The Investment Committee reports regularly to the Trustees.

Risk Management
During the year the Trustees reviewed and addressed the major risks to which the Trust is
exposed: status and reputation; asset value and grant-making capacity, operational
processes; IT systems and data; and succession planning. The Trustees are satisfied that the
established systems are sufficient to mitigate those risks.
Annual Review
The D’Oyly Carte Chair of Medicine and the Arts
Professor Brian Hurwitz
BA (Cambridge), MB, BS, MA, MSc, MD (London), FRCP, FRCGP
D’OYLY CARTE CHAIR IN MEDICINE AND THE ARTS
(appointed February 2002)
The Trustees of The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust established The D’Oyly Carte Chair in
Medicine and the Arts at King’s College London in 2001 with a £2 million donation to
stimulate high quality teaching, research and public debate in the field of medicine and its
relationship to literature, philosophy and other arts, including those of performance.
The D’Oyly Carte Professor, Dr. Brian Hurwitz, reports regularly to the D’Oyly Carte Trustees
and to a KCL D’Oyly Carte Chair Advisory Board which acts as a source of guidance and advice
for the Chair and as a financial audit and review body.
The Board membership includes The Principal of King’s College London (or nominee), Head of
the School of Humanities (or nominee), the Teaching Dean for the King’s College London
Health Schools or nominee, two members representing the D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust
(currently Jeremy Leigh Pemberton and Dr. Michael O’Brien) and other external and internal
members as required drawn from the medical, arts and education fields. Membership of the
Board is for a three year term, renewable thereafter.
KCL welcomed a new Principal in September 2014, Prof. Ed Byrne. The Trustees are
delighted that Prof. Byrne has agreed to take the chair of the D’Oyly Carte Chair Advisory
Board in succession to Prof. Sir Rick Trainor, and Prof Byrne chaired his first meeting in
December 2014 when Prof Hurwitz presented his report on the academic year 2013/14, the
Chair’s 12th year of activity.

Performing Arts and Medical Education at King’s College London (KCL)
Access to the performing arts for undergraduate medical students, facilitated through Clod
Ensemble’s Performing Medicine programme continues to be an integral component of the
Chair’s activities.
Based on Clod Ensemble’s experience of working with Medical Students at King’s over the
previous three years, work funded by the Trust, the Head of Undergraduate Medical
Education invited Clod Ensemble in 2013 to modify an existing KCL Academic Support
Programme (ASP) for Phase 3 and 4 medical undergraduates who have failed their exams and,
as a result, required to re-take a year (some 3-8% of the cohort annually).
It was thought many of these students suffered not only from a lack of knowledge and
understanding but also from poor confidence, low self-esteem and underdeveloped practical
skills that might be helped by a Performing Medicine approach to clinical consultation skills.
The Trust agreed to support two courses per year for two years with a grant of £12,000
commencing in the academic year 2013-14. Additional funding was provided by KCL and the
Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

A full evaluation on this ASP, with comparative data, will be undertaken at the end of the
academic year 2014/15. Discussions between Clod Ensemble and the KCL medical school
about extending this work into the mainstream curriculum for undergraduate medical
education, and developing a research project that will build a gold-standard evidence-base for
arts-based learning at KCL, are ongoing.

The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company’s Archive
The Trustees were delighted that The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company’s Archive transferred into
the ownership of the British Library in February 2015.
This important Archive, which includes the autograph manuscript of Iolanthe (1882), is
regarded as remarkable in its extent, its continuity and the range of material it contains,
providing an unparalleled insight into an opera company which was unusual in its repertoire,
international reach, its focused social identity and ownership over more than a century by a
single family – the D’Oyly Carte Family. Furthermore, as an archive of an important theatre
company which toured the UK and the British Empire extensively, it is truly British in the
sense of the audiences it reached and its subject matter which relates to stage works offering
a unique view on aspects of British society and culture from the late Victorian period.

In the knowledge that The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust had indicated that they wished to be
as supportive as possible throughout the acquisition negotiations, The British Library applied
for a grant to support the cataloguing of the archive over a period of 15 months.
The Friends of the British Library had already pledged £20,000 for this purpose, and the
Trustees were delighted to make an exceptional grant of £26,765 to the British Library to
complete the funding required for cataloguing to ensure the research potential of this
important archive is fully realised and enthusiasts of Gilbert and Sullivan, and musical theatre
alike, can in future make the most of this rich material becoming available for the first time.

During the year under review, the Trustees paid out grants totalling £1,203,643 to 292
charities. This was an increase in value compared to the previous year when 290 grants
totalling £1,117,851 were paid. Grants agreed during the year but not yet paid at the end of
the year amounted to £132,000.

The Trustees’ decision-making on grants in the period continued to follow the procedures laid
down and applied in past years. The distribution of grants between the sectors continues to
favour charities in the Arts and Medical Welfare sectors with a smaller proportion going to
Environmental charities.
Charitable Trusts and Foundations, as independent grant-makers, exist to create a better
society - and have the distinctive opportunity to determine their own agenda. Whatever the
cause, the Trustees seek to direct their funds to where they can make a major difference, and
this aim steers them away from significant appeals. The Trustees realise the vital impact
their funding can make, and the encouragement it can give, particularly to smaller charities
seeking to provide desperately needed services in the community.
An ever increasing and hungry voluntary sector continues to weather the impact of reduced
government spending both at a national and local level which makes the role of a grantmaking charity all the more challenging.
Nevertheless, the Trustees continue in their aim to make grants to address disadvantage and
to enhance people’s lives – and not to replace public services; and they continue to be
sympathetic to applications towards core funding from charities whose work they know well.

Birmingham Royal Ballet: Dance Track
Arts Priority: Promotion of access, education and excellence in the arts for young people to increase their
opportunities to become involved outside school and to build future audiences
Dance Track is a scheme providing gifted young children from deprived backgrounds with free ballet
training. Birmingham Royal Ballet staff deliver workshops to 2,000 Year 1 children (aged 5-6) in areas
of Birmingham which are “cultural cold spots” with high socio-economic deprivation and low cultural
engagement. At these annual workshops staff identify 60 children with a talent for dance and invite
them to join the two-year Dance Track programme.
© Paul Telfer
Dance Track children are aged 6-8. They receive weekly ballet classes taught by a professional dancer,
dancewear, backstage events such as trying on costumes and wigs, workshops with current Company
dancers and performance opportunities. The programme is free of charge and weekly classes take
place locally to minimise travel costs for families. Dance Track not only enables children to reach their
full dance potential but also improves confidence, social skills, creativity and physical wellbeing. The
project has been successful in creating the next generation of dancers and audiences, with many
graduates going on to further training at vocational schools such as Elmhurst School for Dance and the
Royal Ballet School.
A grant of £3,000 this year is the third grant the Trust has awarded to the Dance Track scheme.
My sons would never have taken up ballet if they were not invited to Dance Track, it just never came up. I
think this is a very important result of the programme. It's great to give boys a chance to be involved and
both boys have gained a great deal from it.

Music for Youth
Arts Priority: Promotion of access, education and excellence in the arts for young people to increase their opportunities
to become involved outside school and to build future audiences with special emphasis on
choral singing for children and young people to encourage recruitment into choirs
Music for Youth (MFY) is a national music education charity providing free access to performance and
audience opportunities for young musicians across the UK and the Trust has supported its work
regularly since 1989 with grants totalling £194,500 to date.
MFY delivers a range of initiatives that seek to engage those least engaged in the arts - Regional
Festivals provide a unique opportunity for groups to perform to new audiences, listen to other groups
from their area and get valuable feedback from the team of MFY Music Mentors, and MFY's National
Festival in Birmingham showcases dynamic performances by young musicians from across the UK,
featuring jazz, orchestral, rock, folk and world, urban, wind and brass, pop, choral and chamber music.
In addition, 3,000 young musicians light up the Royal Albert Hall in London every year at the annual
Schools Prom concerts.

It has built their confidence. They have seen that, despite their nerves, performing can be a positive
experience. They have shown support for one another and come together as a group. The positive feedback
they received from the mentors gives them a belief in themselves as a choir. They were able to see other
young people performing and were part of a quality event themselves.

different from what they have been used to before. A really good experience for everyone.

Living Paintings Trust
Arts Priority: Access to the arts for people who have least access to them
Living Paintings is a unique publishing house, the only charity in the UK which designs, creates and
publishes tactile and audio books, with raised picture accompanied by audio descriptions, for blind
and partially sighted people - Touch to See books.
Titles are published suitable for anyone from pre-school to adult and the wide and growing range of
titles is designed to provide education and life-long learning, enhance lifestyle and support leisure
interests. Titles are distributed via a free postal service.
In the charity’s 25th anniversary year, it is now developing a new style of book that will help change
the lives of its growing adult library membership: Short Stories. Twenty titles will be created in this
new series, and the Trust is continuing its support of Living Paintings over many years by launching the
fundraising for this project with a grant of £4,500 this year which will go towards the publication of
the first three titles.
Your beautiful descriptions and my fingers tell me more about the pictures than my tiny bit of colour blind
vision ever could. It is altogether a beautiful experience and you are wonderful people to do it for us.

Samling
Arts Priority: Performance development opportunities in the performing arts
for those in the early stages of their careers
Since 1996, Samling Artist Programme has provided performance development opportunities for over
270 singers and pianists at the outset of their careers. Working with the principal conservatoires and
other trusted organisations, Samling auditions over 120 artists annually to take part in week-long
residencies. They receive artistic guidance from internationally acclaimed artists and performance
and masterclass opportunities, not only at Sage Gateshead, but also at Wigmore Hall where the
annual showcase is held.
© Mark Pinder
Samling Artists return to lead and direct workshops, masterclasses and opera productions benefitting
singers aged 14-21 participating in the Samling Academy. It is hoped that it will only be a matter of
time before Academy participants audition for the Artist Programme, thus creating a ‘virtuous circle’,
and cementing Samling’s position in the North East as a centre for musical excellence.
The Trust has been a long-standing supporter of Samling and this year awarded another grant of
£5,000 towards the Samling Artist Programme.
The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust's sustained and much valued support of Samling Artist Programme for
young professional singers and piano accompanists has enabled us to provide a unique residential
environment for them to learn from and be inspired by some of the world's greatest artists, reaching new
audiences through performances and masterclasses. It has also helped us focus on attracting young people
to the art form through our growing Academy.

Liverpool Lighthouse
Arts Priority: Support for charities seeking to engage with young people on the fringes of society through
music and drama projects to improve their employability and diminish the risk of social exclusion
Liverpool Lighthouse is located in the most deprived district of England’s most deprived city. A grant
of £5,000 from the Trust is currently supporting its Youth Connect programme which uses the urban
arts and music to engage disadvantaged young people, inspiring them to find positive alternatives to
anti-social behaviour and enhance their future employability.
Young people join workshops that appeal to their interests, including street dance, digital media, rapsong writing and DJ-ing.
This leads on to the charity’s wider programme including crime and
consequence sessions and careers advice.
Since 2009, over 3,500 12-19 year olds have participated in the Youth Connect programme with 650
being more intensively engaged. The charity reports that 40% progressed onto employment, training
or further education; 89% reported increased confidence and self-esteem; 68% have a healthier
attitude to drugs and alcohol; and 35% are less likely to get involved in criminal behaviour and gangs.
If it wasn’t for Youth Connect I would probably be in trouble with the police. I was always getting into
trouble and being excluded from school and Youth Connect gave me somewhere to go and something to do.

English National Ballet: Dance for Parkinson’s
Medical Welfare priority: Promotion and provision of music and art therapy to improve
the quality of life for the elderly and the disabled, and in palliative care
English National Ballet (ENB) is a UK leader for Dance for Parkinson’s (DfP), and with its national remit
it is committed to raising the public profile of Parkinson’s, giving access to, and advocating for the
benefits of dance and cultural activities for people with Parkinson’s.
DfP is a unique project, designed to support people with Parkinson’s to have a better quality of life.
ENB delivers this by holding weekly sessions encompassing dance, cultural activities, and opportunities
to socialise and build a support network for people with Parkinson’s and their carers. ENB has run DfP
for three years in London, and, with support from the Trust, has established hubs in Oxford and
Liverpool; and following its success, the project has been expanded to include two new regional hubs
in Ipswich and Cardiff.
The Trust is a long-standing supporter of ENB’s outreach work, and this year a grant of £5,000
continues to support and strengthen the regional DfP hubs in Oxford and Liverpool.

We went along to what we thought was going to be an ordinary meeting….But this Friday afternoon was
different and started us on a wonderful journey together….I watched as a room full of people came to life before
my eyes. At first people were slumped in chairs not talking or much smiling going on. But then the pianist
began to play and Becky and her team began to work their magic on us….For me the transformation was so
evident and amazing. The music and dance moves seemed to breathe new life into the whole room. People were
laughing, smiling and joining in. No one moaned or sat out. The ENB team were helpful and attentive. The room
was buzzing.

DEMAND – Design and Manufacture for Disability
Medical Welfare priority: Support for charities concerned with alleviating the suffering of adults and
children with medical conditions who have difficulty finding support through traditional sources
DEMAND designs and manufactures bespoke items of equipment, unobtainable elsewhere. The
charity endeavours to narrow social inequality by giving multiply disabled people greater access to
opportunities in so many fields, including art, education, employment, music and sport etc. and works
to address the considerable needs of severely disabled children and adults. From its Hertfordshire HQ
it can readily meet such needs within a 100 miles radius, taking in the whole of Greater London and
the South East. Its Yorkshire base near Huddersfield has a similar range.
Clients range in age from babies to retirement and beyond. Their difficulties span the full disability
spectrum with the majority struggling to cope with debilitating conditions, such as Arthritis, Cerebral
Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Injury and sensory impairment, and many have
multiple disabilities and severe learning difficulties.
Much of the charity’s work enables people with disabilities to access educational, artistic and sporting
opportunities and also to cope more readily with their condition so that they can derive maximum
benefit from their opportunities and develop their talents, ideally, in more inclusive settings.
The Trust has supported DEMAND since 1990 and this year awarded a core revenue grant of £5,000.
Carina’s Lift:
Carina is twenty three and lives in Watford. She has acute
disseminated encephalomyelitis, a neurological condition
characterised by muscle weakness, which makes standing
and walking difficult, so she has to use a wheelchair. She
wanted to start a Hair and Beauty course at the Technical
College in Hemel Hempstead but her acceptance on the
course was dependent on her being physically able to work
on clients at a variety of heights.
DEMAND made a battery powered mechanism that is
attached to the underside of her wheelchair. Carina can
position the wheelchair manually then raise herself to carry
out her practical course and work easily and comfortably.

4 Cancer Group: Sail 4 Cancer
Medical Welfare priority: Support and respite for carers with emphasis on the provision of holidays for
those carers who wouldn’t normally have a break from their responsibilities – and with special
emphasis on projects and schemes that allow young carers to enjoy being children
In 2011 Sail 4 Cancer introduced its Young Carer Family Break Project to give recognition to the
contribution young carers makes to family life under difficult circumstances by providing a respite
break for the family with the focus on the young carer. Some of these children are as young as eight
years old and they sacrifice their childhood for the sake of their families.
Many of the families helped are single parent families who are in very strained financial
circumstances. The breaks are designed around the needs of the youngsters and patients keeping in
mind restricted mobility and health concerns while ensuring that the focus is on the young carers.
The Trust’s grant of £5,000 is the first grant awarded to this charity, specifically in support of respite
breaks for young carers with their families.

The HorseCourse
Medical Welfare priority: Support for charities seeking to rehabilitate young people on the
fringes of society to improve their employability and diminish the risk of social exclusion
TheHorseCourse is aimed at those who are suffering social exclusion due to poor emotional or
thinking skills. This might manifest as offending, isolation, reliance on mental health or social
services, disengagement from school, training and work, or a host of other difficulties.
Much of the charity’s work is in the community with young people and families referred by a range of
partners including Childrens Services, Schools, PRUs, Youth Offending Teams, The Children's Society,
Action for Children, Children & Adolescent Mental Health Service, Behaviour Support and Troubled
Families teams. Early results show that TheHorseCourse is very successful in engaging young people
and delivering outcomes and the Trust’s second grant of £5,000 this year is supporting facilitator
training in 2015/16.
Evidence to date indicates that
TheHorseCourse (THC) provides
a very promising range of
benefits, particularly for people
who are unable or unwilling to
make progress in conventional
services.
We are engaged with THC in a

The grant-funding from The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust has enabled us to theory-train 24 potential
practitioners from around the UK, selected for their promise and commitment. We currently have eleven
fully trained, assessed and approved HorseCourse Facilitators, enabling us to reach a greater number of the
people who are failed by current provision. We also have a clear system for training and assessment, a
number of part-trained candidates and a waiting list for training. Without this funding from The D’Oyly
Carte Charitable Trust we could not have put this system in place.
Our evaluation shows that after attending our courses participants improve their ability to manage anxiety
and in turn improve engagement with education, training and work; have better relationships and gain the
confidence to lead happier, more fulfilling lives.

Surrey Care Trust
Environment priority: Conservation of the countryside and its woodlands, with emphasis on the
encouragement of voluntary work and active involvement in hands-on activities, particularly
activities that bring about positive changes in the lives of young people
The Surrey Care Trust has been supported by the Trust since 2005 and seeks to address disadvantage,
social exclusion and hardship in local communities and to help people improve their life chances.
The charity’s two Swingbridge boats provide activities aimed at people who are marginalised in society
for all sorts of reasons; mild learning difficulties, mental illness and addiction, family breakdown and
unemployment, and young people who are struggling in education or have caring responsibilities.
The Trust’s grant of £5,000 this year is supporting Swingbridge2, a year-round base for environmental
volunteering and training for young people and adults as well as offering work placements for adult
offenders.
This “enviroboat” works along the Thames, River Wey and Basingstoke Canal.
Volunteers and trainees make a valuable contribution to looking after the local environment while
also learning new skills.
Some of the tasks the Swingbridge crews take on include: cutting back
overgrown vegetation to improve views, access and safety, creating wildlife havens, hedge
maintenance and planting, painting lock gates, litter clearance and controlling invasive species such as
Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed and Ragwort.
Basil Glanville (above), a retired-teacher and one of the Surrey Care Trust’s longest-serving volunteers, trains
young people and vulnerable adults, teaching crewing and the basic land maintenance skills needed for the
environmental work carried out.

Wildlife Trust Scotland
Environment priority: Protection of species within the UK and their habitats under threat or in decline
The Scottish Wildlife Trust has been a champion of Scotland’s wildlife since 1964, from the threatened
red squirrel to puffins, dolphins and ancient Caledonian pine forests.
The red squirrel is the UK's only native squirrel species, and was once a common sight across all of
mainland Britain. Today, red squirrels are sadly absent from most of England and Scotland’s central
belt, affected by the spread of the grey squirrel, introduced in the 19th Century. Only 120,000 red
squirrels remain in Scotland, around 75% of the total UK population. Scotland is one of the only havens
left for red squirrels, with areas in the north still remaining grey-free.
The Scottish Wildlife Trust has joined forces with Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission
Scotland and Scottish Land and Estates to undertake the first nationally co-ordinated attempt to stop
the decline of red squirrels in Scotland. The Trust’s grant of £5,000 this year is supporting Phase 3
(over 2 years) of the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels project.
© Steven Gardner
The contributions of The D'Oyly Carte Charitable Trust to the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels to date have
helped us to protect vulnerable populations of red squirrels in Aberdeenshire, highland Scotland, Dumfries
and Galloway and parts of the Scottish Borders from replacement by invasive non-native grey squirrels,
restoring thriving populations of our charismatic native squirrel. Although work remains to be done to
maintain the successes so far, we now have an excellent basis for a sustained recovery.

St. Mary’s Petworth
Environment priority: Heritage conservation within the UK based on value to, and use by, the local community
St Mary’s is the prime location for the successful Petworth Festival and is a regular venue for
performances by other groups in the Petworth area, including the Fernhurst Choral Society, the
Petworth Band and the Leconfield Singers, together with local schools.
A grant of £3,000 contributed to the lighting project which will ensure that St Mary’s is a first class
venue for the Arts and as such will be of great benefit to the local and wider community.
The Friends of St Mary's Petworth are extremely grateful for the support received from The D'Oyly Carte
Charitable Trust. The funds have allowed us to carry out a major improvement to the lighting in St Mary's in
order to provide a marvellous setting for the Petworth Festival and for the many other cultural events for
which St Mary’s is used. At the same time we have been able to enhance the beauty of the lovely barrel
vaulted ceiling.

Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST)
Environment priority: Rural crafts and skills in heritage conservation, with emphasis on
increasingly rare skills that would otherwise be lost
QEST strives to support craft fields that are in danger of disappearing completely in order to contribute
to the sustainability of Britain’s rich heritage. Many of the craft fields QEST has supported since its
induction in 1990 have made a substantial difference in ensuring the continuation of traditional and
rural skills that may have been otherwise lost.
Most of QEST’s beneficiaries have exhausted every other avenue to support their career progression
and are sometimes in the worrying situation of getting in to debt. A grant of £5,000 last year enabled
Nina Thomas’ to complete her degree in Farrier Science at Myerscough College in Lancashire and she
is now running a thriving business shoeing horses; and this year a similar grant from the Trust will
support Caitlin Dowse whilst she undertakes an unpaid internship in painting conservation at the
National Museum of Wales.
I am confident that Caitlin will graduate with flying colours at the
end of July this year but, as with all freshly graduated young
conservators, she will need a period in a major conservation studio
to build up her experience and knowledge. Conservation is a
lifelong learning process, and the three year Hamilton Kerr
Institute Postgraduate Diploma course, although a rigorous and
onerous undertaking in itself, has given her a foundation for the
vital next stage where, under the guidance of more experienced

Rupert Featherstone, Director of the Hamilton Kerr Institute
I am delighted to receive a QEST D'Oyly Carte Scholarship as it will enable me to complete an internship at
the painting conservation department of the National Museum Wales. I'll be able to build on my craft skills
and it will enable me to continue on into the profession, with the aim of becoming a fully accredited easel
painting conservator.

Trust Links
Environment priority: Social and therapeutic horticulture - projects that use gardening or other environmental
activities to bring about positive changes in the lives of those who are living with disabilities or ill-health
Trust Links is a local charity in
Essex that aims to support people
and
build
communities.
Established in 2000, Trust Links is
committed to enabling people to
work together to improve mental
health and well-being and
promote, support, inspire and
cultivate wellness and sustainable
living.
Trust Link’s successful Growing
Together project in Westcliff-onSea was set up as a Community
Garden to provide social and
therapeutic horticulture, training
and recovery support to adults
with mental illness including
schizophrenia, bipolar disorder,
depression and anxiety.
This
project is now well developed and
supports 100 to 150 adults per
year.
Growing Together
Shoeburyness seeks to replicate
this success in a deprived area.
This is the first year of support for
Trust Link and a grant of £5,000 is
supporting the Growing Together
projects in Westcliff-on-Sea and
Shoeburyness.
An external evaluation of Growing Together by Anglia Ruskin University 2014 demonstrates clear
improvements in: quality of life, physical activity, knowledge and skills in horticulture, experience of social
inclusion and social interaction and sense of community, autonomy, choice and control, mental health and
wellbeing.

company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in
accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally
Accepted Accounting Practice).
Company law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a

period. In preparing these financial statements, the Trustees are required to:




select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material
departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume
that the charitable company will continue in business.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable
accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the
financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding
the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and
detection of fraud and other irregularities.
In so far as the Trustees are aware:


there is no relevant audit information of which the charitable company's auditor is unaware; and
the Trustees have taken all steps that they ought to have taken to make themselves aware of any
relevant audit information and to establish that the auditor is aware of that information.
This report is prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to companies entitled to the small
companies exemption.
Auditor: The auditor, Baker Tilly UK Audit LLP, Chartered Accountants, has indicated its willingness to

and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including its income and
expenditure, for the year then ended;
have been properly prepared in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted

Opinion on other matter prescribed by the Companies Act 2006
In our opinion the information given in the Trustees’ Report for the financial year for which the
financial statements are prepared is consistent with the financial statements.
Matters on which we are required to report by exception
We have nothing to report in respect of the following matters where the Companies Act 2006 requires
us to report to you if, in our opinion:





the charitable company has not kept adequate accounting records, or returns adequate for
our audit have not been received from branches not visited by us; or
the financial statements are not in agreement with the accounting records and returns; or
certain disclosures of Trustees’ remuneration specified by law are not made; or
we have not received all the information and explanations we require for our audit; or
the Trustees were not entitled to prepare the financial statements in accordance with the
small companies regime and take advantage of the small companies exemption from the
requirement to prepare a strategic report or in preparing the Trustees’ report.
