May Movie: Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
Winner of the Jury Prize at the Venice international Film Festival and a crowd favourite at TIFF 2013, Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s poiginant drama
tells the story of two families — one rich, one poor — who discover that their sons were switched at birth.
Ryota has earned everything he has by his hard work, and believes nothing can stop him from pursuing his perfect life and living as a
winner. Then one day, he and his wife, Midori, get an unexpected phone call from the hospital. Their 6-year-old son, Keita, is not their son the hospital gave them the wrong baby. Ryota is forced to make a life-changing decision, to choose between "nature" and "nurture". In the
meanwhile, seeing Midori’s devotion to Keita even after learning his origin, and communicating with the rough yet caring family who raised
his blood son for the last six years, Ryota also starts to question himself: has he really been a "father" all these years...
Although very Japanese in context, the film poses universal questions around parenthood and lifestyle choices and reminds us that any
definition of family needs to be constructed around unconditional love, first and foremost.
This moving story of a man who finally faces himself when he encounters an unexpected wall for the first time in his life is among the
Kore-Eda’s best films. With superb performances from Masaharu Fukuyama, Machiko Ono, Yoko Maki and Lily Franky.

Nostalgia Night an Event for Everyone!
Nostalgia Night is truly an event for everyone. When else can you
spend an afternoon and evening with friends and family honouring
organizations and groups who have contributed to the cultural
development of the Japanese Canadian community, exploring and
reveling in the history of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
and community, and digging into a scrumptious buffet of Japanese
Canadian food that you cannot get in any restaurant!
For many of us - young and old, the opportunity to hear stories
shared by some Nisei and Sansei as they view archival pictures or
artifacts or remember being part of a club or organization is priceless.
The display booths of the organizations being honoured provide
another glimpse into how the Japanese cultural arts have evolved
and been sustained within our Japanese Canadian communitysome for more than fifty years. They also provide an opportunity
for people to find out more about each of the organizations that
support the cultural arts, how to engage in these activities and who
is involved.
This year we are extremely pleased to be honouring four groups
who continue to support and further the Japanese cultural arts at
the JCCC - Bunka Shishu, Ikebana (Ikenobo and Sogetsu), Shodo,
and Sumi-e. Bunka Shishu, the art of punch needle embroidery
to create very detailed pictures often likened to oil painting, began
as a class in 1984 at the JCCC. Ikebana (Ikenobo and Sogetsu)
is the disciplined art form of flower arranging that demonstrates
harmony and enlightenment. These two different schools - Ikenobo
and Sogetsu - began their classes in 1963 at the JCCC. Shodo, the
stylistic writing of the Japanese or Chinese language using brush,
ink, and paper, was introduced as a class in 1967 at the JCCC.
Sumi-e, a contemplative art using a brush, ink, ink stone and rice
paper to express the essence or spirit of a subject in keeping with
Japanese Zen Philosophy, was first introduced as a class in 1963
at the JCCC.
Nostalgia Night is on Saturday July 5, 2014 from 3:00pm to
8:00pm, so circle that date on your calendar as you definitely won’t
want to miss out on this event. And after such an overwhelmingly
positive response to last year’s Nostalgia Night we are repeating
the early bird registration.
For JCCC members who register prior to Friday, June 6th the
cost is $15.00 per adult and for non-members it is $20.00 per adult.
After June 6th the price will be $20.00 for adult JCCC members and
$25.00 for adult non-members. For children under the age of six
the price is $5.00. The final registration deadline for this event is
Friday, June 27th.
New this year, registrants may reserve tables of ten (10).
Tables reserved prior to the June 6th early bird deadline may be
reserved for $150.00 and after June 6th the cost will be $200.00.
To reserve a table for 10 you will need to confirm your payment and
provide the list of people who will be at your table. For those who
do not wish to reserve a table of 10, we will be providing table cards
so that you can place your name at any unreserved table allowing
you to reserve your seat and still be able to enjoy the activities in
Shokokai Court.
Look for the registration forms in this newsletter or get one
from the JCCC reception desk. Don’t miss out on this great event register early!!
EISA - The Rhythm of OKINAWA and the
world of Kenji Miyazawa’s “A Night on
the Galactic Railroad”
Following the success of a spectacular Eisa show performed at the
JCCC in summer 2013, Okinwan dance and music performance
group Karakoro will be back again on Sunday August 10, 2014.
"Eisa" is an Okinawan ceremonial dance which has a history
that dates back many centuries. It was originally performed to
welcome and console the souls of one's ancestors during the
summer "Bon" season. Nowadays, it is performed throughout
the year at various festivals and concerts. The performance
includes soft feminine dances and dynamic masculine dances with
various drums, singing and chanting accompanied by the Sanshin
(Okinawan musical instrument that is the precursor of Shamisen),
as well as colourful and exotic costumes. Traditional Eisa includes
dances with celebratory music along with dragon and lion dances.
The non-traditional aspect of this show will start with a Japanese
song.
In addition to the traditional and Karakoro original Eisa, this
year, Karakoro will bring the world of Kenji Miyazawa with the
Eisa version of “A Night of Galactic Railroad” to the Toronto show.
Kenji Miyazawa was an educator, poet, children’s literature writer
and farmer. He was passionate about the relationship between
mankind and nature throughout his life. The main theme of “A Night
on the Galactic Railroad” is pursing the answer to “What is true
happiness?”
Karakoro is a unique performing group consisting of a wide
range of people from different age groups and backgrounds.
The group has become even more powerful and dynamic since
last year. Please come and experience their dynamic Okinawan
performance and the world of “A Night on the Galactic Railroad” at
the JCCC this summer!
Before the show you will be able to enjoy Japanese summer
noodles, “Hiyashi Chuka”, and Okinawan sweets, Sata Andagi
from 4:30pm in the Shokokai Court.
Date: Sunday August 10, 2014
Time: 6:00pm (food sale from 4:30pm)
Tickets: $17.70 + HST JCCC members,
$22.12 + HST non-members.
Reserved seating. Ticket sales will start June 2 at the JCCC
reception desk 416-441-2345.

Henry Zagdanski named as Representative of
the Jewish Community for Sakura Award
Unprecedented in the history of the
Sakura Gala, the JCCC is awarding
two recipients with Sakura Awards
in 2014: Japanese diplomat
Chiune Sugihara and the Jewish
community in Toronto.
Chiune Sugihara was a Japanese
diplomat who served as ConsulGeneral in Lithuania during WWII.
In 1940 he risked his career to issue
over 2,000 visas to Jewish refugees
so they could travel to Japan and
escape the Nazi onslaught that
was engulfing Europe at the time.
The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre is also pleased to
announce that Henry Zagdanski will posthumously receive the
Sakura Award as a representative of the Jewish community in
Toronto. Henry Zagdanski is representative of the extraordinary
humanity and greatness of spirit shown to Japanese Canadians
by the Jewish community following the Japanese Canadian
internment.
During this time, many Japanese Canadians were turned away
from housing and employment, for reasons often based on lingering
racism and discrimination. Rising above the common prejudices of
the day, Jewish Canadian business and property owners offered
employment to Japanese Canadians. In particular, Nu Mode Dress
Company, a company in the garment industry that was owned
by Henry Zagdanski and Fred Singer, employed many Japanese
Canadians. In fact Roy Shin became a key manager under Henry
Zagdanski at NuMode and Roy Shin was also one of the founders
of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
To receive information about ticket/table sales, sponsorship
opportunities, how to donate an auction item or to purchase an ad
in the Gala programme, please call or email Sarah Burd at 416249-0788 or [email protected]
Keep checking the JCCC newsletter for updates on the Sixth
Annual Sakura Gala. Be sure to save the date – November 22,
2014!
Sedai Corner
Spring Has Sprung –
Time to Get Out There!
Spring is finally well underway, much
to the relief of all! Sedai has been glad to see a small influx of
volunteers and visitors to the Centre with the warmer weather. As
such, now is the perfect time to take a trip down memory lane, and
either visit us at the JCCC or have the Sedai Project pay you a visit,
to assist with recording family legacies and anecdotes.
Sedai would like to thank our most recent interviewees and
contributors to the Sedai archives – Sam Kamo and Hajime Sawada.
Both gentlemen having very different stories and life experiences,
the Sedai Project was very happy to add their recollections to our
community history. Thank you so much for the contribution of your
time, and your memories to our inclusive community record!
Sedai was also very happy to assist with the first trial run of
hopefully many school visits to the new Moriyama Nikkei Heritage
Centre. A class of 27 grade 11 students learning about Canadian
history during WWII paid the Centre a visit, and Sedai was onhand to assist Archives Chair Theressa Takasaki and volunteer
docent Keo Shibatani in guiding the students through the new
space, providing anecdotes and information from Sedai’s collection
of interviews. Much was learned on both sides, as feedback was
provided towards the tailoring of future educational programming.
Sedai hopes to continue reaching new audiences in collaboration
with volunteers from the Heritage Committee.
To add to recent activities, Sedai has also added another
mini-interview vignette to our focus on connections between the
Nikkei and Jewish Canadian communities, following the war years
- our many thanks to Sedai interview alumni Nana Nishimura, for
her recollections! Sedai would also like to thank those who have
contributed letters and written notes towards the effort – we hope
that some of these stories can also be recorded on camera, so
that we properly capture and do justice to the genuine feelings of
appreciation and fellowship across community borders!
If you would like to aide us in giving thanks, and have your
memories (however few!) from those community connections
recorded, we invite you to step up and contact us. And as always, if
you or a loved one have stories which you feel should be recorded
and preserved, please contact Elizabeth Fujita, Sedai Project
Coordinator, at [email protected] or 416-441-2345 ext 303.
The Graphic Art of Hajime Sawada
From May 5 to May 30, the Arts Committee of the JCCC is very pleased to announce an exhibition of the works of the community’s very
own Hajime Sawada – long time volunteer and supporter of the Centre, and former Art Director at the CBC.
Over the span of 28 years with the CBC, Mr. Sawada had a hand in the creation of much of the art and illustration work featured across
the CBC’s many platforms, from a time before advanced computer technology. From portraiture of former CBC Presidents, to illustrations
of CBC favourites Mr. Dressup’s Casey and Finnegan, the approximately 60-piece show will feature Mr. Sawada’s works spanning a wide
range of mediums and topics.
At 2:00pm on Sunday May 25, 2014, the Arts Committee will host a reception and artist talk with Mr. Sawada, to enlighten visitors on his
experiences – on Canada becoming his “second mother country”, to the 28 years he spent with the CBC, to which he still feels “extremely
lucky!” to have had the opportunity.
Coming Soon:
From July running through to August 31st, the JCCC Gallery will also feature the wood sculptures and work of Kats Takada. Reception and
Artist Talk TBA.
