NEW MINAS NEWS FOR YOU
Live an Active & Healthy Lifestyle
Turn over a healthy food leaf!
Anne McLaughlin, AVH Dietitian
Getting back on track with your healthy eating goals after the holidays can be challenging, but it’s important to refocus on healthy habits. Healthy eating year-round is essential to nourish the body, provide
protective nutrients that fight disease, and help control your weight. Since February is heart health
month, here are a few tips for eating well this month and beyond.
Enjoy plenty of vegetables and fruits. Vegetables and fruits are full of nutrients, high in fibre, low in
calories, and make great snacks. Canada’s Food Guide recommends adults eat 7-10 vegetables and
fruits per day. Vegetables should be half of your plate at meal time.
Choose high fibre foods. Fibre is beneficial for bowel health and can help lower cholesterol levels.
Choose higher fibre breads and cereals, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, beans, vegetables and fruits.
Read labels and choose breads and cereals that are higher in fibre.
Limit salt. Health Canada recommends that Canadians eat less than 2300 mg of sodium (1 tsp of salt) a
day total from processed foods and added during cooking and at the table. For those with high blood
pressure, the recommendation is even lower. Research shows that about 80% of the sodium we are
consuming is not from what is added to foods but what is already in our foods, such as deli meats,
canned soup, frozen dinners, etc. Reduce your salt consumption by cooking more from scratch and read
labels to look for lower sodium foods.
Go nutty! Nuts have fibre and heart healthy fats that can help lower cholesterol. However, nuts do contain a fair amount of calories, so be mindful of portion size. A ¼ cup of nuts is considered a food guide
serving of meat and alternatives. For peanut butter (and other nut butters), the serving is 2 tablespoons. Nuts make a great snack on their own or a nice addition to a fruit and yogurt parfait, salad, or
homemade trail mix.
Enjoy meatless meals. Canada’s Food Guide recommends having beans, lentils or tofu more often. For a
tasty meatless choice, try vegetarian chili, lentil soup, bean and rice dishes, or bean burritos.
Here is a recipe using beans to try:
Bean Burritos
Ingredients:
1 zucchini
1- 2 leeks or onions
1 pkg whole wheat tortillas
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
Skim milk cheese, grated or fat free sour
1- 2 carrots
1- 2 peppers (different colors)
¼ cup (approx) salsa
cream
Cut vegetables into thin slivers or strips. You can add other vegetables if desired. Sauté vegetables. Add
black beans and salsa, heat through. Heat tortillas in Teflon pan lightly each side. Place mixture on each
tortilla in the centre. Add low fat cheese. Fold over and eat. Serve with low fat sour cream, if desired.
