MISSION STATEMENT
St. Joseph's is a Catholic Parish rooted in rural Lyons, Wisconsin.
Our members seek Christ’s peace by following His teachings and by
sharing together in a lifelong journey of spiritual growth. In response
to the gospel’s call for justice and compassion, we reach out and
share our resources with all those in need.
We believe that each person is blessed and gifted by the Holy Spirit.
We encourage everyone to respond to their baptismal call by sharing
their time, talents and treasures.
CONFESSIONS: First Saturdays from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
or by appointment.
BAPTISMS: Arrangements must be made in advance, allowing time
for an instruction period prior to baptism.
WEDDINGS: One member of the couple must be a registered,
practicing and contributing member of record for at
least 6 months. (Parish Council – October 20, 2005)
If you have a concern that needs immediate prayer, give it to

ADORATION PROGRAM
At the time of the Transfiguration, Peter spoke to Jesus, “Rabbi, how good it is
for us to be here.” One visit to the Good Shepherd Chapel at St. Mary’s in
Burlington, and you, to, will echo those sentiments. How good it is for Jesus to
be there for us! How good it is for us to be there with Him! Stop in and take
advantage of this privilege - it is an awesome experience, and one which you
will want to repeat! Jesus is waiting to bestow His blessings on YOU. Join our
Adoration program and commit to spend a designate hour with Him on a weekly
basis. Drop-ins are always welcome, too.
Our hours of adoration are Monday - Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The
chapel can be accessed from the street level and is located between the main
church and the rectory on McHenry Street.
Please call Debbie Regner at 763-5834 or Dick Miller at 539-2648 for more
information or to volunteer your time.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY
In Christian parlance, a saint’s “birthday” is not the day of
his or her birth, but the day of death. If a person is
honored as a saint, it is understood that the day of death
is the day of new birth into heaven. After thirty years as
bishop in Ireland, Patrick died on March 17 in AD 461. In
the early 16th century his feast took on a more civic
nature in Ireland, becoming a nationwide celebration.
While the “wearin’ o’ the green” is an honored tradition for people of Irish
descent (and those who wish they were on St. Pat’s day), the color itself was
not associated with St. Patrick until much later. St. Patrick’s blue is still an
official color in Ireland, and is seen on the coat of arms and the presidential
standard of the country. Whether you’re Irish or not, “Happy St. Pat’s Day!”

Lenten Prayer
God of love and forgiveness,
you give us this season of Lent to callus back
to you through repentance and acknowledgement
of our sins and offences.
Through our prayer draw us closer to you
and help us to know the depth of your love.
Through our fasting help us to rely on you
as we put aside our own wants and needs.
Through our almsgiving make us aware
of the needs of our brothers and sisters
whose only hope is often in you alone.
In your great mercy, heal us from our sins
and wipe out our offences, so that,
renewed in your grace and revived by your love,
we may rejoice in your saving power.
Amen.

Cycles of Faith - 1st Sunday of Lent
Clerow Wilson, Jr. is a Golden Globe and two-time Emmy Award winning actor.
He is also unknown to most Americans by that given name. As a comedian he
was known as "Flip" Wilson. He was the first African-American to host his own
weekly variety show on television and was considered by Time magazine to be
television's first black superstar. When Wilson would perform as Geraldine Jones
in one of his stage personas, audience members could bet that a final excusemaking phrase would be, "The devil made me do it!" In the character of Geraldine, Flip Wilson played off of the human predilection to give in to temptation.
With a history of over two thousand years of Christianity, the followers of Jesus
today don't have many stumbling blocks to believing in him as God. Most Christians simply grow up with that understanding. It becomes a part of our common
view of who Jesus is. In our day, it may be more difficult to thoroughly comprehend the other aspect of Jesus' nature: that he was fully and completely human, or
as Eucharistic Prayer 4 states it, "he shared our human nature in all things but
sin." If that is truly the case (and as Catholics, we believe that it is), then Jesus
was subject to all of the temptations and opportunities for sin that we ourselves
experience.
Sunday's Gospel about the temptations of Jesus often gets analyzed through an
approach that looks for symbolic meaning in the three encounters between Jesus
and the devil. That can be one way of examining at the story. But as we begin
Lent, it might be good to take a more general view that simply presents Jesus as a
man struggling against temptation. That is what we do each and every day. In
that, he was just like us. He overcame temptation by understanding God's will for
him. That sounds like a pretty good plan for our Lent as well. ©2011 Liturgical Publications Inc

CHRISTIAN FORMATION CORNER - COMING CHANGES TO THE ROMAL MISSAL - 3RD EDITION - PART I
A few weeks ago, parishioners at each Mass were asked for comments about 1) how they learned about any possible
coming changes in the Roman Catholic Church and 2) what they already knew about the changes that will be coming in
the words spoken during Mass. The top three sources of information from among the 20 listed were the Catholic Herald,
the parish bulletin and announcements at Mass. Slightly more than half of those responding reported little or no
knowledge about those coming changes. A handful had a fair to good understanding of the changes. These responses
prompted us to quickly begin our task of preparing parishioners for the implementation of the 3rd Edition of the Roman
Missal while those of us responsible for that preparation continue to learn more ourselves as we attend conferences and
study materials we can use to help others be readier. A new Missal means that some of the Mass texts will change. Those
changes will be implemented on November 27, 2011, the First Sunday of Advent.
Some look forward eagerly to the changes and value them. Some think the new edition should not have been considered
in the first place and think it should be stopped now. Others do not have enough information to form an opinion yet. All
need to learn more about what will change, why those changes seem appropriate and how those changes will come
about. Hopefully you will want to know as much as you can about what, why and how. In the coming weeks and months,
this Corner will be one tool providing information for you. We all go through changes in our life. We always hope
something good will come from those changes. Please keep an open mind. Ask questions when you have them. And,
pray for a successful and productive process of change. More next week….
