Volunteers
White Bear Lake Schools follow volunteer guidelines requiring a background check of all volunteers that work
with our students. WBL Area Schools have a secure, online application process for volunteers. Please contact
the school office at 653-2809 to request the email link to process your background check online. If you do not
have access to the internet, a paper background check application can be sent home with your child. If you
have already completed a background check, please contact the office to verify that it has not expired.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
November 5 Election Day - Vote! There are two school board positions open as well as the Capital Project Levy
(4 T's - textbook, technology, test tubes (science) and tubas (music stuff).
Conference attendance was very strong.
Book fair & fundraiser logistics (teacher's break room) were smooth and successful.
Vision screening successfully completed for all our 390+ students - special thanks to Jill Becker and volunteers.
Lakeaires is scheduled for hearing tests on November 7.
In classroom volunteer opportunities:
 Very supportive and giving parents donating time
 Grandparent volunteers donating over 45 hours per week (through Lutheran Social Services)
 Lunch mentor program "cultivate" has 10 volunteers and will start meeting weekly the first week of
November
 We need PTO volunteers - whether it is a little or a lot, we will take your help and support
Student leadership food-drive runs through this week for local food shelf - boxes are located out front. This
program is in conjunction with the White Bear High School.
The City Council has given their approval to begin the construction project at Lakeaires. Advertisements for bids
were run in the WB Press. If timeline goes as hoped, the office/entry would begin in the summer and be open by
school start 2014.



Bids wrapping up week of November 4
City Council review November 12
Fall start is TBD on the gym footings and any possible demo/excavation
Next meeting, invite someone!
3.
Teacher's Liaison Report - Jeanne Anderson said on skate night there were 105 skaters. The next roller skating
party at Saints North will be Friday, November 1. World Cultures Art will run through October 6/7. Report cards
will go home next Wednesday. Teachers can submit invoices to the PTO for reimbursement.
4.
Treasurer's Report - Pete Brown - last year's budget was reviewed. The PTO will be discussing the budget again
at the November meeting.
5.
Old Business
 Fall Fundraiser - the cookie dough, gift wrap and miscellaneous items is going on right now. The last day
for sales is September 30, 2013. We are looking for help to separate the order and distribute to the
families.

6.
Event Planning - there was a lot of discussion on upcoming events.
o
There will not be a Blizzard Blast this year due to low donations. Instead, a dance with pizza &
soda may be held instead. Perhaps have some drawings with a bike, airport tour, etc. as prizes.
o
Bookfairs will be held in conjunction with conferences. We are looking for volunteers to help
staff the book fairs.
o
The cookies sales went well.
o
We will have a movie night (date to be determined) If you have any suggestions, please let the
PTO know. It's being considered that perhaps the kids can vote on which movie to show. A
permit will have to be obtained and a flyer will need to be made.
o
The PTO needs to start talking soon about the spring carnival. The planning/volunteer finding
process is extremely time consuming. It was discussed that maybe just a first floor carnival be
held.
o
Bearwear sales - a display table can be set up during conferences. Anyone interested in helping
can contact Sandie Larsen. Order forms may be sent home with the kids.
o
Some potential events were discussed like: a craft fair or garage sale where a person would rent a
space, bring their own tables and sell items. There will be more discussion on this idea with a
flyer drafted for Mr. Krusemark's approval. It was brought up that a school within our district quit
fundraising programs and instead asked parents for donations. Unfortunately this wasn't a huge
success.
New Business
The yearbook committee is in need of pictures and is asking parents and teachers to help.
The PTO is looking into ways to make it easier for pictures to be submitted for yearbook. PTO is considering
sending monthly reminders home with kids.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT:
Student Leadership Toy Drive for the WBL Lions is December 2-6. They are looking for new toys (any age
range) or a cash donation. The toy drive will support local families.
Welcome to White Bear Week - January 6 – 9, 2014
This event is geared toward families that are not currently in the White Bear School system. Families can drop in
to WBL schools to obtain school information and get a tour of the school.
Kindergarten information and registration is Thursday, January 16, 2014 – Please get the word out to families with
small children and let them know about this. There will be lots of information going out to the community as well
One of the ways is a post card will get mailed to licensed daycare providers so they can inform their families.
Lakeaires staff, Extended Day and local Girl Scout Troop has adopted families for this Christmas season. It was
voted on and approved that the PTO donate $300 to this.
Cold Weather Attire - Minnesota winter is here and the weather is COLD. Children need to have appropriate
attire - hats, mittens, boots, and snow pants. Make sure all clothes are clearly labeled with student’s name.
Fundraiser Distribution - Mr. Krusemark said the fundraiser distribution went well and that Mary Hellmark did a
great job! Thanks Mary for all your hard work! Approximately 40% of Lakeaires kids participated in the
fundraiser - the PTO received $8,000 for this effort.
Mr. Krusemark talked about the school’s Interventionist, Title I and ADSIS programs. The teachers work with
children that need extra help in math and/or reading.
Thank you parents for giving advance notification to school staff on your vacation plans.
Construction - Kraus-Anderson is the general contractor for our school construction. The contractor is starting
site preparation. The secured entrance is scheduled to be completed by September 2014 and the gym should be
completed around December 2014.
3.
Teacher's Liaison Report - Jeanne Anderson said on skate night there were 96 skaters. The next roller skating
party at Saints north will be Friday, December 6. Ms. Anderson is looking for Altoid mint tins needed for a class
project - if anyone has any they'd like to donate, contact her.
4.
Treasurer's Report - A December PTO meeting will be held to get the budget finalized. It was suggested that
next year’s PTO start meeting in August rather than September to get the planning & budget process finalized.
5.
Old Business - Event Planning
Movie Night – The PTO is waiting for Community Ed approval to hold the movie night either January 24 or
January 31. The planners are still considering which movie to show but they plan to take a couple options to the
kids for their vote. We are looking for help - ticket takers and concession sales (popcorn & juice).
Carnival - We will have a carnival and we're still considering a first floor only carnival. If you would like to
volunteer to help, please contact Mary Hellmark at [email protected] .
6.
New Business
A big THANK YOU to Lakeaires custodians, Terry & Jim for all their hard work! The PTO approved purchasing
$50 gift cards for each of them.
We will hold a December PTO meeting to finalize the budget on December 10th at 6 pm.
