[email protected] 2 0 1 6 STEAM is a model for curriculum based on the natural learning and the idea of educating students across all disciplines - specifically science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics - while integrating each into an overarching applied approach. Our goal is to empower students as globally aware and locally engaged leaders and innovators through critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. We now have three STEAM Coaches serving all RBB schools, grades K-12. Amanda Henry is working with grades K-2, Jaime Miller with grades 3-5, and Chantal Cagle with grades 6-12. We are thrilled to be bringing new challenges and opportunities to our students and teachers at every level, and to be change agents and instructional resources as we develop our model of STEAM education with every student in mind! Watch future newsletters for FAMILY STEAM CHALLENGES to engage your children in these skills in FUN ways at home, opportunities to volunteer or donate at each school, and other exciting happenings such as the Tinker Space EHS Librarian Sharen Roulet has established in the library. For questions about STEAM, or opportunities to support the program, please contact Jaime Miller by email at [email protected] or by phone at 812-876-2219 Ext. 2428. The Importance of Reading Aloud Contributed by Mr. Hopkins, SES Principal You hear about it at the doctor's office, your child's teacher talks about it, you may even hear about it while you are getting your haircut! Reading aloud to your child, regardless of their age, is extremely important. Did you know that reading books, magazines, poems, flyers, and business signs helps children acquire early language skills? It is widely recognized as the single most important thing you can do to build language development. Children don't magically learn words - it is a skill they develop, and having things read aloud to them is the key, even before they can talk! Reading aloud to your child helps build motivation, curiosity, and memory. Reading to your child sends a message that books are important. When we take time as parents to sit down and read, our children will form a positive relationship with books while discovering the practice to be a calming and relaxing practice. Perhaps most importantly, it builds a strong foundation for success in school. When students begin school, difficulty with reading leads to falling grades, absenteeism, as well as additional problems. Taking time each night or just a few nights a week to read with your child will foster a love for learning, build their vocabulary, and help them to be successful in school and in life. It feel like "another thing" we have to do as parents sometimes, but sitting down to read with your child, regardless of age, can be the most rewarding and fulfilling part of your day. Some of my best memories as a child are from sitting in my bed at night while my dad read picture books and chapter books to me. Today, I do the same with my 5 year old daughter and 11 year old son. The books are different, but the JOY is the same. There’s an app for that! Find these pages and “like” them! You might be asking yourself, “What is growing behind EPS?” To date we have donated 20+ grocery sized bags of food the Ellettsville Food Bank and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. This is all thanks to a great group of kids from EPS K-2 working and maintaining in the 2015-2016 school year and summer. The food banks are beyond grateful. We have GOALS for the 2016-2017 school year! Another grant has been submitted and will be used for a green house. We want to plant earlier and more! We also want a sign to recognize all of our supporters. We hope this is installed by Fall Break. We are recruiting new members and groups are donating hours of work to the garden (Girls Scout troop). Monthly meetings will resume in September. They will be on the third Wednesday of each month from 3:30-5:30. Dates: September 21, October 19, November 16, No December What is Fuel Up to Play 60? Fuel Up to Play 60 is the nation’s largest in-school health and wellness program, created by the National Dairy Council and National Football League in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This free program offers funding opportunities for schools and an online Playbook full of school-tested action strategies to improve healthy eating and physical activity at schools and beyond. Fuel Up to Play 60 empowers students, with the support of adults, to take the lead in making healthy changes and to have a positive impact in their communities. Over 73,000 schools are involved, and 38 million students have been reached through the program nationwide. What’s the Playbook? Developed with the input of students, educators and other experts, the Playbook is a collection of fun and exciting easy-to-do action strategies. These Plays — led by students with help from educators — are designed to increase access to healthy eating and physical activity at schools. The goal? Helping schools make sustainable, healthy changes and meet wellness goals. Check it out and register your child!
