Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I saw this reflection in Illustrated Homilies, published by Rev. Mark Link and wanted to share it with you.
One night a father came to a parent-teacher conference in a
Chicago high school.
During a talk with one of the son’s teachers, the father broke
I wanted to buy my wife and kids all those
down and began to cry.
things I had dreamed of giving them. But
After he regained his composure, the father apologized,
in the process I got so involved in working
saying, “My son no longer lives with me.
that I forgot about what they needed
But I still love him, and want to know how he’s doing in
school.”
most: a father who was around at nights
The father then told the teacher how his wife and four

children had left him that afternoon.
He was a building contractor and sometime worked 16 hours
a day.
Naturally, he saw little of his family, and they slowly grew farther and farther apart.
Then the father said something sad.
He said: “ I wanted to buy my wife and kids all those things I had dreamed of giving them.
But in the process I got so involved in working that I forgot about what they needed most: a father who was around
at nights to give them love and support.”
That true story illustrates the point of today’s Gospel reading.
It is this: we can get so involved in what we are doing that we forget WHY we are doing it. We can get so involved in
living that we forget the purpose of living. We can get so involved in pursuing the things money can buy that we forget
about the things money can’t buy.
Question for Reflection:
We need periods of quiet prayer in our lives if we are to keep our balance and perspective… When and where do you
daily find quiet time for prayer?

STATE OF THE PARISH ~YEAR 1~PART 5
My Dear Brothers and Sisters,
For the past several weeks we have provided updates on all the projects we have been addressing over the past year.
Two weeks ago we outlined our plan to replace the current HVAC by the end of September 2016. Last week we outlined
our plan to refurbish the “WEST PARKING LOT” hopefully by the end of January 2017.
Today, we want to update all of you on the REFURBISHMENT of the Church.
CHURCH REFURBISHMENT
Last year, when I arrived we wrote:
“I don't think anyone would be surprised if I stated that the interior of our church looks a little dated, soiled, and worn. It
(continued pg.3)
needs a great deal of TLC sooner rather than later.
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
At a minimum the items that need to be addressed in the INTERIOR are: new doors, new
lighting, new sound system, new and proper baptismal font, a reconfigured sanctuary area,
dedicated choir area and new pews or at least refurbished pews.
In addition, the EXTERIOR items that need to be addressed at a minimum are: additional
and/or refurbished bathrooms, traffic flow re-configuration, evaluate the viability and placement
of a gathering center and therefore a new main entrance, exterior landscaping and hardscape.
Toward this objective, we invited all the parishioners to a series of four 2-hour Educational/
Liturgical/Spirituality sessions to guide us through the REFURBISHMENT of our Worship space. To
make it as convenient as possible, we held each session twice, one at noon and the other at 7:000
p.m. So in actuality Mr. Griesemer did eight sessions.
To guide us in this effort we hired Liturgical Consultant Mr. Ken Griesemer, who had recently
assisted the communities of St. John Fisher, Palos Verdes and St. John Vianney, in Hacienda
Heights during their New Construction.
These four Educational/Liturgical/Spirituality Sessions were held in April and May and were
met with RAVE reviews. All those who attended felt it was a VERY helpful and insightful
experience (AND...the food and hospitality provided by Jenny Gaffney and her team made it a
very delightful experience… a great time was had by all).
The topics presented in SESSIONS 1 & 2 included: What Church documents say regarding
the refurbishment of a worship space; liturgical spirituality; a quick overview of Church theology
and its impact on architecture and: the liturgical goal of Vatican II, the FULL AND ACTIVE
participation of the laity.
SESSIONS 3 & 4 were more practical as Mr. Ken Griesemer presented a slide show to help us
visualize various design feature such as: the role of Gathering and Hospitality and the space to
accomplish this; Baptismal Font placement, design, and theology; Reconciliation Chapels; Shrines
and Sacred Art; the arrangement of the Assembly (seating, sanctuary and music). These sessions
were indeed exceptional!!!
What’s Next: our next step is to start to form a Church Refurbishment Steering Committee
and to hire an Architect who will take some of the suggestions from the Sessions and develop
possible options. Our hope is that we may have some preliminary design options by May or June
2017.
WELCOME RYAN SCOTT
Hi, I am Ryan Scott and I am the new Confirmation Coordinator and Youth
Minister here at St. Dorothy’s. I have been a parishioner here for 27 years. I grew
up in Glendora and graduated from Glendora High School. I went on to attend Cal
Poly Pomona where I received my Bachelors degree in Psychology. After
graduation, I gained experience in Human Resources at the Walt Disney Company.
From there, I transitioned into a role at the Empire Company where I received my
license as an Insurance Broker.
In 2014, I married my wonderful wife Kim who is also very active in the
program. It was through our involvement here at the church that God brought us
together. My parents, Dave and Lisa, are parishioners here as well.
I have been involved with Life Teen for 15 years. I went through the program as a candidate,
became a peer leader and core member, served as Assistant Youth Minister and led in the music
ministry. I am thrilled that God has called me back home to continue my work as Youth Minister. I
couldn’t be more excited to begin this new chapter. We have such a wonderful program here at
St. Dorothy’s and I can’t wait to see what God has in store next.
One of my first projects is to overhaul the teen center and make some updates to the space.
If you would like to help us, we would appreciate your generosity in donating gift cards to Home
Depot, Lowe’s, or Costco. Most importantly, I appreciate your prayers and support as I begin this
journey.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION, AUGUST 15
Mass Times: 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 7:00 p.m.
Why Do Holy Days of Obligations Change?
Many people have asked me to clarify the status of “Holy Days of
Obligations and so I happily do so.
At their plenary assembly in November 1991, the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops approved a motion which affected the observance of
Holy Days of Obligation.
The Decree of Promulgation read as follows: “In addition to Sunday,
the days to be observed as holy days of obligation in the Latin Rite
dioceses of the United States of America, in conformity with canon 1246,
are as follow:
January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God;
Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter, the Solemnity of the Ascension; (in
the majority of the U.S. dioceses including Los Angeles, this feast is
transferred to the following Sunday)
August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary;
November 1,the Solemnity of All Saints ;
December 8, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the
United States of America;
December 25, Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
In addition the bishops approved a motion that whenever January 1,
the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God; August 15, the Solemnity of the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; November 1, the Solemnity of All
Saints, falls on Saturday or on a Monday the precept to attend Mass is
abrogated.
August 15, 2016 - Feast of the Assumption
Therefore in compliance with the aforementioned Decree, the precept
to attend Mass on August 15, 2016, the Feast of the Assumption, is
abrogated for this year.
HOWEVER, because this is a Holy Day in the eyes of the Church,
although not a day of obligation for this year, we do invite you to
celebrate.
The Church in her wisdom gives us these Feast Days so that we may
set aside the challenges of our daily life and once more return to the foot
of Spiritual Nourishment and Eternal Life.
Therefore, we invite you to celebrate the Great Feast of Mary’s
Assumption into Heaven on August 15th. Mass times will be 6:30 a.m., 8:30
a.m., and 7:00 p.m.

NATIONAL NEEDS COLLECTION
Next week, July 24 our parish will participate in the
National Needs Combined Collection. This collection makes
it possible for the Church to continue strengthening
catholic faith, values, and education. It helps support some
of the poorest dioceses in the country that depend on the
annual collection.
It also enables us to ensure the highest standard of
quality Catholic education. It strengthens the Church at
home, and helps to provide basic pastoral resources and
services to needy ethnic communities in scattered and
isolated areas.

SAINT DOROTHY SCHOOL NEWS
WHY A CATHOLIC EDUCATION FOR YOUR CHILDREN
OR GRANDCHILDREN?
Few would argue that our world is
fast pace and changing rapidly. So the
obvious question is where will our
children learn morals, values, ethics, seek
the common good, and have the great
gift of learning about the Creator of the
Universe and growing in a loving,
prayerful relationship with God? A Catholic education
promotes this AND a rigorous academic education.
A Catholic education is indeed “AN ADVANTAGE FOR
LIFE” and strives to prepare your children and
grandchildren with the tools necessary to contribute to
the Church, society, and world.
St. Dorothy School is a TK through Eighth Grade
School. We are currently accepting applications in all
grades. St. Dorothy teachers are credentialed, experienced
and many have a master's degree in education. St.
Dorothy School offers students extra-curricular activities
and all students participate in Christian Service Projects
throughout the year. St. Dorothy is offering opportunities
that go beyond the classroom. The academic rigor, sense
of belonging, moral grounding and high expectations for
excellence promoted by Catholic Schools add up to a
recipe for achievement.

R.C.I.A. INQUIRY
Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel
to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)
How does our Parish attract inquirers each year
who might consider becoming Catholic? SAFEGUARD OUR CHILDREN
The short answer is YOU !
Constant vigilance goes a long way to protect your children
from predators
So much of our society operates on blind trust, and that trust can
sometimes lead parents to make the wrong choices when it comes
to the safety of their children. Far too many predators and abusers
hide behind the well-known and trusted adults. Parents should be
vigilant when introducing anyone into their children’s’ lives, and
should not ignore any red flags or suspicious behavior. It’s better
to investigate than to misplace your trust at the expense of your
child’s safety. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “An Ounce of
Healthy Suspicion is Worth a Pound of Prevention,” email
[email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
Invite some special person in your life to join us at
our next R.C.I.A. INQUIRY meeting after the 5 pm
Mass on Saturday evening, July 23, and following
every Mass on Sunday, July 24 in the Conference
Rm. (located on the SE corner of the Church next to the
women's restroom).
