D I R E CTO R ’ S N OT E W est Side Story has been a part of my life almost as far back as I can remember. When I was a child, I listened to the cast album on the hi-fi system while lying on the floor in my family’s living room. At fourteen, I was cast as Baby John in a local community theater production, and then I played Action in a college production while at Northwestern University. In my twenties, after staging the show at two different theaters in Chicago, I had the unbelievable opportunity to make my Broadway debut in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, performing all of this incredible choreography under the tutelage of the master himself, Jerome Robbins. There is definitely something magical about this show. It is certainly a timeless story, with an especially intelligent book and an unrivaled score, but I think what really brings the show to life for each new generation is the fact that the story is about the loss of innocence. In everyone’s life there is a moment that marks the portal between one’s childhood and the realities and responsibilities that come with being an adult. Sometimes that event is wonderfully joyful, like entering a career, meeting a love interest, or living on one’s own for the first time. Sometimes, as in the case of this story, the event is a horrific tragedy that makes us realize it’s time to put aside our petty, childish opinions and ignorance and instead look for the commonality and good in those around us. I am honored to have the opportunity to direct this spectacular production with this incredibly talented cast. I hope that it will be enjoyed by those of you who, like me, grew up with West Side Story in our lives, but I am most excited for the opportunity to introduce a new generation to this extraordinary piece of musical theater and to the message of love and acceptance it has to offer. —Mark S.
