MOLOKAI OUTDOORS
Aloha
JUNE 2009
M ahalo, for contacting us for your upcoming trip to Molokai, and helping us celebrate
10 years of business. Our island is special and quite different from the other islands. I would
like to say; we are like the raw diamond buried in the dirt and if rubbed gently, a glistening rock
will appear! That is Molokai! We have many beautiful and exciting things to offer on our island,
and if we can’t offer you what you seek, let our on island concierge service help you find a tour
to your liking with our on island partners. If you are one of those travelers, and just wants to
experience a more authentic Hawaiian island lifestyle, you may be pleasantly surprised.
O ur day excursions to Molokai for 2009, we will continue to work closely with The
Lahaina Cruise Company with their day trips to Molokai that includes the Ali’i and Guided Hike
to Kalaupapa. In addition to TLCC Day trips, Molokai Outdoors is introducing the
Downwinder, which is kayaking down wind on the longest fringing reef in US waters and a mini
tour of the highlights of Molokai as a day trip. This is a one of a kind kayak trip and the new
brochure shows it all. For those that want to find something to do for your families, this is a
perfect outer island excursion where everyone is happy. This is a great adventure for you
whether you are coming over from Maui or Oahu for the day or staying on Molokai. We will also
have some new kayaks rigged for kayak fishing, if you fancy catching your evening dinner
fresh, but you will need to be the avid ocean fisherman or woman.
3
MOLOKAI OUTDOORS
L et us offer you some of our MOA favorites like the Island Tour, Private charters and
kayaking. These are on certain days of the week and based on availability for those on
Molokai or who want to come via plane or ferry. New for 2009 will be the Kalaupapa guided
hike or the Pilgrimage hike that starts on Molokai at 7.15 am for those hikers who are not
advanced and want history of Kalaupapa and/or make this their pilgrimage to Father Damien
and Mother Marianne. Father Damien will be made a saint in 2009 and Mother Marianne
shortly after. They will be the first and only Saints in the United States, so more this makes
Molokai such a special place. Father Damien also appeals to so many types of people and I
find this my re-grounding every time I hike the trail, which is high in the 3 digits! You can still hike
on your own and we can arrange that with Damien Tours, or you can ride the mule down the
trail, and just be staring at the views. If you are scared of heights, I would suggest hiking or
flying down. Yes, 5 minutes of fear is better than 75 mins!
O r for those coming from the outer islands and want something more than just the
day, try an overnight with either Hotel Molokai or one of the condos on island, or I do offer a
short-term room rental for those on a budget. I can help you with those arrangements.
K indle your spirit as we look forward to your visit and remember all of us involved in the
visitor industry live in our community. We are here to share and educate visitors such as you, on
why this is such a special island. We are not commercialized, and we hope that your experience
here will be one of authenticity. When you leave, we believe that you will not only understand a
little more of the culture, but I am sure a part of Molokai will find a way into your heart.
4
MOLOKAI OUTDOORS
A dventure awaits, whether it is to hike the trails, kayak our reef, or battle your shadow
for room at the beach. Gaze at the incredible night sky, or watch the sunrise and the setting
sun. Get lost in your world walking the beaches, swimming the coves, or staring at the blues of
the ocean. Watch the palm trees swaying in the wind, or hear the birds singing their songs.
Leisurely swing in your hammock, or watch the grasses grow. And yes, perhaps realizing this is
old Hawaii of so many years ago. This is why; we want to share with you why Molokai is still
Molokai!
I n closing, we enclose some fact sheets and a trip planner to help make your planning
easier, or just choose to make no plans and absorb what the island has to offer. We look
forward to seeing you on Molokai.
Aloha from Molokai,
Clare Mawae
Owner of Molokai Outdoors

Molokai Shores
Wharf to Kalaupapa Lookout
Introduction to the island. Kalaupapa Lookout is a light trail hike (roughly 3 minutes) through ironwood forest where you’ll
enjoy a phenomenal view of Kalaupapa Peninsula. In the 1850’s when Hansen’s disease, formerly known as Leprosy, swept
through the Hawaiian Isles the worst cases were sent to this isolated peninsula. In 1873 Father Damien arrived and was
revered for his infinite love for the residents of Kalaupapa. Time permitting one can also hike to the Phallic Rock.
Kalaupapa Lookout to Coffees of Hawaii
Visit the largest and most unique private coffee farm in the Northern Hemisphere. This 500 acre estate produces some of the
finest Arabica beans in the world. Coffee tasting is available for your enjoyment, try a “Mocha Mama” coffee drink…it’s
more like a dessert.
Coffees of Hawaii to Purdy’s Macadamia Nut Farm
Purdy’s Mac Nuts are “all natural”. Tootie Purdy invites you into his orchard educating and entertaining with hands on
experience. Be sure to take advantage of all samples offered and ‘talk story’ with Purdy himself. Opt to purchase honey and
nuts.
Lunch at a Local Hotel Molokai
Enjoy your lunch with a beautiful ocean view and gentle trade breeze at Molokai’s Hula Shores
Local Molokai Restaurant to St. Joseph Church and Kumimi
Built by Father Damien in 1873 was renovated 100 years later to commemorate its 100 anniversary. The Bishop Museum
along with members of the Catholic Church helped to prepare the church for the special occasion. The cemetery along the
side of the church, are members of the Catholic Church and those from Kamalo.
As you look at the church, you will be seeing all of the other churches Father Damien built, as they were similar in size and
features. The original confession booth, Flemish ceilings and life size statue of him are on site. After St Joseph’s church you
drive to Kumimi, better known by locals as Morris Point. This particular spot was used as a land mark to identify local family
homes along the way to Halawa Valley. From this point one can see Napili coast of Maui and Lana’i.
Kumimi to Kaunakakai Town (if time allows)
Kaunakakai, the main town on Molokai is only two blocks long. Quaint and quiet, you’ll notice that there are no traffic
signals. In ancient times it was called Kaunakahakai famous for its rich water crystals. As time passed by Kaunakahakai was
eventually called Kaunakakai, town by the sea. Take a walk through town and see what the local vendors have to offer or
relax and eat ice cream under a coconut tree.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT KALAUPAPA
Kalaupapa National Historical Park was established on December 22, 1980. Still in its formative years, it is dedicated to the
past, the present and the future. It is dedicated to preserving the memories and experiences of the past in order that valuable
lessons might be learned from them. It is dedicated to providing a well-maintained community to ensure that present
residents of the Settlement may live out their lives in this, their home. And, it is dedicated to the education of present and
future generations with regard to a disease that has been shrouded in fear and ignorance for centuries.
The park is open Monday through Saturday, by invitation only.
Visitors must be at least 16 years of age.
1835
Leprosy is observed in Kamuli, a Hawaiian woman living at Koloa, Kauai. This represents the first documented case of
leprosy in Hawaii.
1864
Joseph De Veuster arrives in Honolulu on March 19. He is ordained on May 31 in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in
Honolulu and is known as Father Damien.
1865
"An act to Prevent the Spread of Leprosy" is signed into law by King Kamehameha V on January 3. This act authorizes the
setting apart of land for the purpose of isolating persons with leprosy..
1866
The first "shipment" of patients to the Leprosy Settlement at Kalawao, Molokai, is made on January 6. The first group
consists of 9 men and 3 women.
1873
Father Damien, age 33, arrives at Kalaupapa on May 10.
Efforts are heightened to "apprehend" and isolate all persons with leprosy.
1885
Father Damien is "officially" diagnosed as having leprosy and the news is made public.
1889
Father Damien dies on April 15 at the age of 49.
1946
The Board of Hospitals and Settlement authorizes the use of the sulfone antibiotics at Kalaupapa. Sulfone therapy is started
on six patients and the medication seems to produce changes overnight.
1969
Hawaii's century-old isolation laws are abolished. Legislation calls for the use of the term "leprosy" rather than "Hansen's
Disease" with the idea that a concerted effort should be made to educate the public to accept the disease under its original
name. All new cases are treated strictly as outpatients.
1980
President Carter signs Public Law 96-565 establishing Kalaupapa National Historical Park.
The State Legislature again decrees "Hansen's Disease" rather than "leprosy" to be the official terminology in Hawaii. This
action is based on the feelings by persons with the disease that use of the term "leper" perpetuates the stigma still associated
with the disease.

Wharf to Kalaupapa Lookout
Introduction to the island. Kalaupapa Lookout is a light trail hike (roughly 3 minutes) through ironwood forest where you’ll
enjoy a phenomenal view of Kalaupapa Peninsula. In the 1850’s when Hansen’s disease, formerly known as Leprosy, swept
through the Hawaiian Isles and the worst cases sent to this isolated peninsula. In 1873, Father Damien arrived and was
revered for his infinite love for the residents of Kalaupapa.
Tuddie Purdy invites you into his orchard educating and entertaining with hands on
