In his 2010 book, The Emperor of All Maladies - A Biography of
Cancer, Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D., enters the mind of cancer,
describing its personality, its historic behavior, and the behavior
of those who have diligently toiled to conquer and control it. The
saga covers centuries and is epic. Recounted from the earliest
description recorded on papyrus through the genome insights of
modern science, the story is a gripping drama marked by discoveries
and despair, breakthroughs and backslides. Although the war on
cancer was not formally declared until the Nixon administration, our
human relationship with cancer has always been a war - a series
of battles with some wins and some losses. Military efforts may
well advance science and technology, but always at a price paid
in human lives and suffering. So too is the story of the 5,000 year
war with cancer.
As Mukerjee vividly recounts, in spite of the centuries of
discoveries, controls and cures, cancer remains very much alive
among mankind. This year 600,000 Americans will be killed by
cancer (25% of all deaths), and 7 million people world-wide will
die at cancer’s hand. If you’re an American woman, your chance
of being attacked by cancer is 1 out of 3 during your lifetime; if
you’re a man your chance is 1 out of 2. The odds are good you will
be caught in the crossfire and, if not, someone you know and love
almost certainly will.
The story of cancer is not just about battles, wins, losses, and
weaponry including poison, scalpels and radiation. Cancer’s
biography is about people (patients, physicians, biologists,
caregivers…) and those who love them. While the story always
begins with the scientific tale of a single cell gone awry, those
cells multiply and the story quickly becomes one involving the lives
of countless people . A diagnosis of cancer is not an event of
celebration. It is a sobering moment commencing a journey often
fraught with devastation, anxiety, and confusion. But it is not just
about fear; it is also very much about hope and compassion.
This edition of Medcen Happenings focuses on how we’re working
to ameliorate the devastation and anxieties which often result from
a cancer diagnosis. Through a series of unique hospital /physician
partnerships, a new Comprehensive Cancer and Research Center
is being developed to enhance hope and compassion. Toward
this end, disease site teams reflecting the 4 major cancers in
our region - lung, breast, GI/colorectal, and prostate- are up and
running. Meeting bi-weekly, these medical teams review all cases,

and assess / coordinate all treatment options. Effective and caring
nurse navigators are assigned to patients to help them decipher the
intimidating language of cancer and to assist them to cope with the
chaos which cancer can bring. Additionally, national clinical trials
are available and encouraged. Our staff assists in promulgating this
knowledge and coordinating patient participation. Fulltime genetic and
nutrition counseling is available to all patients. Emotional supports such
as the Cancer WellFit program, chemotherapy orientation and Look
Good/Feel Better are readily available and invaluable. Most exciting is
the formal affiliation agreement in place between the Medical Canter of
Central Georgia and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As one
of only 44 National Cancer Institute designated sites in the nation and
the only site so designated in Georgia, the marriage of the two medical
centers allows, through the miracles of technology, all patients at
MCCG to be virtual patients at UAB , availing themselves of invaluable
expertise and physician consulting options.
The one component still outstanding and, therefore, the challenge
we face, is the integration of these treatment options, services and
supports within a tangible and patient/family friendly environment.
Candidly many parts of the hospital are showing their ages; patients
have voiced, cancer care is hard enough to navigate and navigating
the maze of old corridors and buildings only makes the journey more
difficult. We are excited about bringing the environment up to the same
level as the services. The Foundation has committed to raise $9 million
to make this Center possible. We believe donors want, now more than
ever, to give to those projects with tangible results. We also believe your
gifts to this project could not do more good or touch more lives. The
Comprehensive Cancer and Research Center will, without question,
change and save lives.
This edition of Medcen Happenings focuses not on the stories of
buildings and science but on individual stories—with happy endings—
these are the stories of cancer survivors. Our ability to report countless
future patient journeys devoid of fear and confusion will be possible
through the development of the Comprehensive Cancer and Research
Center. We invite you to become involved; the return on your investment
will be invaluable. To all of you who have already invested, we offer
profound gratitude on behalf of our patients. Our donors have insured
our hospital is world class and we are ever so grateful. I invite you to
enjoy this issue.

In the Making: A
New Comprehensive
Cancer and Research
Center By: Debbie Schuchmann
Dr. Schnell relaxing with his best friend.
In 1983, Frederick M. Schnell, M.D., F.A.C.P. came to
Macon, to the Medical Center of Central Georgia. He
had graduated magna cum laude from the College of the
Holy Cross with a B.A. in biology and completed medical
school at Case Western Reserve University. He had just
completed his internship, residency and fellowship at
Emory University in Atlanta. He brought with him a wealth
of knowledge about a late-breaking treatment for cancer
called chemotherapy. His knowledge and experience
changed the face of cancer care for Central and South
Georgia residents. Now, almost thirty years later, the
face of cancer care is changing again and standing at
the forefront, leading the ongoing fight against cancer is
Dr. Schnell, CEO of Central Georgia Cancer Care.
One of ten children from Ohio, Schnell actually resisted
becoming a physician. Having a father and an uncle
4
Medcen Happenings
who were both physicians he tried in vain to ignore
the scientist and caregiver woven into his very DNA.
Luckily he finally gave in and became a physician -not the internal medicine physician his father was, but
a physician who specialized in oncology and loved
research. Seeking the lifestyle only found in the South
and yearning to participate in the research and medical
advancements being made in the treatment of cancer, he
and his wife, Kim, settled in Macon.
One of the revolutionary changes in treatment which he
implemented was a center where patients could come
for their chemotherapy treatments as an outpatient.
Instead of being hospitalized, they were able to check in
for their treatment and go home the same day. Now it is
commonly known as an Infusion Center and is a regular
treatment area for patients diagnosed with cancer.
SPRING 2011
Another important change in cancer care brought
about by Schnell is the concept of the “disease
site team.” Many cancer patients have up to five
or more physicians: an oncologist, an oncology
surgeon, a radiation oncologist, a plastic surgeon
for reconstruction, a pathologist and other
consulting physicians. Patients and their families are
overwhelmed. In the past, these physicians often
met only with the individual patient. Beginning with
Breast Cancer almost ten years ago, Schnell formed
a team of all the involved physicians and started
weekly meetings to discuss each patient’s care. The
outcome of these meetings has meant better care
and better outcomes for patients. Now there are
disease site team meetings for three other prominent
cancers found in Georgia: lung, GI/colorectal, and
prostate.
Schnell is a visionary. He sees the new Comprehensive
Cancer and Research Center as a place where there
are cutting edge cancer therapeutics, where research
and specialty training are available, a place where
patients have increased access to clinical trials and
where physicians collaborate on a regular basis. He
sees it as a destination site for the entire Southeast.
He feels strongly that Macon deserves a
Comprehensive Cancer and Research Center. During
this era of healthcare reform, there is a vital need for
high quality care which is accessible and affordable.
Traveling to or through Atlanta only increases the
stress on the patients and their families. Flying to
another facility, when 95% of all treatments can be
done here only exacerbates feelings of loneliness
and solitude often felt by cancer patients.
Schnell consistently uses stories to describe the new
Center and states his reasoning is that his patients
relate to stories. Listening to him, you sense his
commitment and passion for helping patients with
cancer. You know he is well-trained and has extensive
credentials, but when he says, “it’s a privilege to help
patients find their way to the care and treatments
they need,” you know the driving force behind all his
www.medcenfoundation.org work and research boils down to his sincere desire to
help a fellow human being.
His practice has grown to include seven, soon to be
eight, oncologists. They now see an average of 125
patients a day. This is not including the patients who
come in for chemotherapy treatment or injections.
To make this kind of impact on the healthcare of a
community, it takes a person like Schnell who has an
unwavering commitment and dedication to his life’s
mission.
Schnell has immersed himself in continuing education
and research throughout his career. He currently
serves as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Dept.
of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine
and Clinical Assistant Professor of Hematology &
Oncology at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory
University School of Medicine. He is also a Principal
Investigator with the Accelerated Community
Oncology Research network. Schnell holds many
community positions and awards including Medical
Director of Central Georgia Breast Care Center,
member of Board of Directors of the Community
Oncology Alliance, Medical Director for Georgia
Center for Oncology Research & Education and
Board member of Community Health Works. Much
of his research has been published in professional
medical journals as well.
Fortunately for his patients and the rest of our
community he chose Macon as his home. He and
his wife, Kim, who is an avid community supporter,
have three grown children and three grandchildren.
Somehow he still manages to make time to enjoy
traveling, visit with family and friends, and even play
with his dog.

Chairman,
Cancer WellFit Project
Cancer Survivor
By: Ellen Terrell
Cancer recovery is often a long path for those faced with the
debilitating impact of treatment, particularly radiation and
chemotherapy. The Cancer WellFit (CWF) Project is assisting
many on their path to return to their fullest physical and emotional
potentials. The free 12-week oncology recovery program combines
exercise, education, nutrition, mind/body activities, and emotional
support. The holistic approach incorporates all aspects of a
person’s health and well-being.
Joe Hobbs started Cancer WellFit in September 2005 after his wife,
Diana, insisted he get out of the house. “I was probably driving
her crazy and I realize now I was suffering with depression to some
degree”, says Joe. “I had been diagnosed 5 months earlier and had
undergone radiation and chemotherapy for throat cancer. When
I entered the Wellness Center that very first day for the Cancer
WellFit class, I weighed 118 pounds and didn’t have the energy to
walk around the 1/8 mile track.” Now Joe can be found working
out at the Wellness Center five mornings a week. He runs a 5k in
32 minutes, enjoys circuit training, can do 20 pull ups as if they’re
nothing, and can hold the plank (a core abdominal strength exercise)
for 7 minutes ~ the man’s incredible!
Joe has been cancer free for over five years and continues to volunteer
for the Cancer WellFit program. He’s proud to tell everyone that he
is the Chairman of Cancer WellFit.... meaning he sets out the chairs
at the beginning of each session and stacks them afterwards. He
enjoys talking with new participants and encouraging them to “stick
with the program”. He tells them, “You’ll become addicted as I did.”
The classes are held at the Wellness Center and each two-hour
session includes exercise followed by educational topics such as
coping skills, stress management, nutrition, and side effects of
medications. The program also includes mind/body programming
such as meditation, yoga, drumming, and guided imagery. When
an individual begins the Cancer Well-Fit program, the trained
professional staff develops an individually supervised exercise
plan, with physician approval, based on therapy restrictions and
energy levels. The staff monitors the participants’ progress and
ability to maintain activity. Clinical outcomes are documented for
each participant and have demonstrated significant changes in
their quality of life.

Medcen Happenings
You often hear cancer has a way of changing
your attitude about life. Joe agrees with that and
adds Cancer WellFit gave him the strength to
also change his way of living. “I no longer sweat
the small stuff. If the grass doesn’t get cut every
week, who really cares? Diana and I just lock the
doors and leave in our 6-speed Miata convertible
whenever the mood strikes us.”
Cancer survivors in our community can certainly
benefit from the Cancer WellFit Project. Please
help us spread the word.
Much of the Cancer WellFit Project is supported
through donations and volunteers. If you would
like to know how you can help, contact Ellen

Lawson, DMD
survivor story
Owner, Signature
Dentistry of Macon
Cancer Survivor
By: Ellen Terrell
Amber Lawson knew at a young age she was going to be
a dentist, but in 1998, just weeks away from taking final
exams for her freshman year at Mercer University, she felt
a knot in the side of her abdomen. After a CT scan and
needle biopsy, Dr. Macram Ayoub removed the growth,
which was later diagnosed as Extra Osseous Ewing’s
Sarcoma, a very rare and serious form of cancer. Amber
was given a 30% chance of surviving, but she refused to
give in to those odds. She decided her diagnosis of cancer
would just be a bump in the road to becoming a dentist.
Fast forwarding to 2011, Amber recently heard about
the Comprehensive Cancer and Research Center project
and immediately wanted to become involved. “Having
a comprehensive cancer center in Macon will be a huge
benefit to this community. My disease was so rare, I had to
travel to Atlanta to receive my chemotherapy treatments.
In between treatments, I would have blood work done in
my home town of Montezuma, many times confirming
neutropenia, which would result in a hospitalization here in
Macon at the Medical Center. The travel alone back and
forth to Macon and Atlanta during that year took such a
toll, not only on me, but my parents as well. It would have
been so much more convenient to have received all the
services in one location.”
say enough about the care I received from the clinical
staff at the Medical Center. They were wonderful to
me and I am forever grateful to Dr. Ayoub for saving
my life.”
Amber credits her positive attitude, faith in God and the
support of her family and friends in seeing her through
that time of her life. In 1999, Amber returned to Mercer
University to resume her education. After graduating
Magna Cum Laude, she attended the Medical College
of Georgia, where she earned the degree Doctor of
Dental Medicine. She remained after graduation to
complete her General Practice residency.
In 2007, Dr. Lawson reached her goal of becoming a
dentist and opened Signature Dentistry of Macon. Not
only is her love for dentistry evident, she also loves
Macon and has brought her energy and enthusiasm
to our community with her involvement in the Junior
League, Macon Symphony, The Children’s Hospital,
and more recently the Comprehensive Cancer &
Research Center. Our community is very fortunate Dr.
Lawson calls Macon home. Dr. Lawson, thank you for
allowing us to share your story.
During her many hospitalizations at the Medical Center,
Amber developed close friendships with the staff; so close
she has been in two of the nurses’ weddings. “I cannot

with her children, her inner thoughts
were, “I’ve got this deadly thing in my

inside my body to kill it.” As frightening
as this was to her, she was even more
confident her course of treatment was

had been reviewed and discussed by
the breast cancer Disease Site Team,
established in 2001. “Having an entire
group of healthcare professionals
including physicians, nurses, and
dieticians discuss my case gave me a
great sense of trust and truly made me
feel special.”
When I met Lucinda Thompson, I immediately knew I had a new friend.
Her enthusiasm for life and helping others is contagious, and just being in
the same room with her puts you in a good mood. Don’t you love people
like that? I’d like to share with you her cancer story.
On May 26, 2009, at the age of 35, Lucinda was diagnosed with
HER2-positive breast cancer. “I was overwhelmed when I received the
diagnosis and would probably have gone into shock, but being a single
mom to a 3 and a 4 year old at the time, I didn’t have time to be in shock.
I just needed to get well,” she shared with me. HER2+ is a breast cancer
that tests positive for a protein called human epidermal growth factor
receptor 2 (thus HER2+) which promotes the growth of cancer cells. In
about 1 of every 5 breast cancers, a gene mutation causes the cancer
cells to make an excess of HER2. This gene mutation, and the elevated
levels of HER2 that it causes, can also occur in other types of cancer.
HER2-positive breast cancers tend to be more aggressive than other
types of breast cancer, so Lucinda’s treatment plan was also aggressive,
consisting of six months of chemotherapy, followed by a double
mastectomy, followed by thirty-six rounds of radiation.
“It was important to me to keep Jasmine’s and Branden’s lives as normal
as possible, so I just told them Mommy has a little sickness and the
medicine is going to make her hair fall out.” While this is what she shared

a blessing this is for future cancer
patients in this community.”
Lucinda is now cancer free and
enjoying life to its fullest. She is also
an active board member of United in

Breast Cancer), The organization works
diligently to positively affect the quality
of life of other breast cancer survivors,
their spouses and their children.

CEO Roundtable
Focusing on
Cancer Care
Draws a Crowd
happening
By: Debbie Schuchmann
The Business & Corporate Committee of the Medcen
Community Health Foundation recently hosted a CEO
Roundtable in the Peyton Anderson Health Education
Center. The Host Committee, made up of business leaders
and chaired by Cal Hays, President, Hays Services, LLC,
strives to foster a partnership between the business and
health care communities. Their focus is to strengthen
the mutual goal of decreasing costs while maintaining
excellence in healthcare for Central Georgians. In order
to gain the support of prominent business leaders, the
committee realizes they must first educate the business
community about the Medical Center. Who better to give
a realistic view than President and CEO, Central Georgia
Health System, Don Faulk?
On Thursday, May 19th at noon, those attending were
greeted by committee members as well as members of
the MCCG administrative team. After a bit of networking
and a quick lunch, participants settled down for remarks
from Don whose successful tenure as CEO speaks
for itself. Don builds an immediate rapport with the
audience as he speaks about specific developments at
the Hospital including the latest information about the
new Comprehensive Cancer & Research Hospital being
developed. His comments were a prelude to information
from guest speakers, Dr. Frederick Schnell, CEO, Central
Georgia Cancer Care and Nancy White, RN, Director of
Oncology, MCCG.
Dr. Schnell’s informational educational presentation
gave the listeners an introduction to the history of
cancer care in Central Georgia and guided them through
some of the milestone developments in cancer care
and research. In his overview, he explained how vital
a new Comprehensive Cancer and Research Hospital is
to MCCG’s patients and families and how exciting it is
to see something of this magnitude become a part of
our community. This discussion segued the introduction
of Nancy White, RN who has been working closely with
12
Medcen Happenings
physicians and administration in the planning of this
special project.
Nancy’s presentation focused on sharing the details of
the new Comprehensive Cancer & Research Hospital.
She mentioned many of the benefits to patients and
families, such as being a one-stop facility for the care
and treatment of Cancer. Currently services are housed
throughout the Hospital. At an extremely stressful time,
having the additional stress of moving from Point A to
Point B just shouldn’t be a factor. She spoke about the
nurse navigator service as the patient’s “GPS” system
from the moment of diagnosis throughout remission.
White also pointed out the benefits to the business
leaders as employers. Employees will receive cancer
treatment nearby, not several hours away, and return
to work sooner, which is emotionally and cost-wise
beneficial. From an even broader perspective, there is
an economic benefit to the community. Just as the Luce
Heart Institute has become a destination for cardiac care
and treatment, the Comprehensive Cancer & Research
Hospital will be a destination for oncology care. It will
bring trained professionals and personnel as well as
top-rated physicians to our community.
Mindful of everyone’s time, the speakers concluded the
program with a Question and Answer period in which
participants could share their thoughts and concerns.
Today when few of us have not been personally impacted
by cancer, there was much interest about the new facility
and its potential positive impact on Central and South
Georgia both from personal and business aspects.

$4 million dollars for The Children’s Hospital. We express our
tremendous gratitude to the many patrons, celebrities, honored
guests, and volunteers who played a role in the weekends
festivities.

The 19th Annual Children’s Hospital Celebrity Classic
Weekend, sponsored by Kroger, was yet another success
this year raising over $260,000. This year the event
kicked off on Saturday, April 16th with Celebrity Casino
Night at the Anderson Goodwill Conference Center. Over
400 guests and celebrities participated in the silent and
live auctions, as well as exciting gaming tables that kept
guests busy during the night. The wonderful food was
catered by Kroger and prepared by the exclusive chefs and
staff from Edgar’s Bistro of Goodwill. The crowd enjoyed
bidding on live auction items and even The Children’s
Hospital patients provided artwork for the auction. One of
the heartwarming items up for bid was a patient fishing
trip provided by Jonathan Herndon, Pro Angler Fisherman
sponsored by Bass Pro. Recently, two patients of The
Children’s Hospital experienced the fishing excursion at
Lake Oconee with Jonathan Herndon. “It was an honor to
take these boys and their parents on this trip. I personally
had to use the services of The Children’s Hospital several
years ago and I know how important it is to have the
specialized services of The Children’s Hospital close to
home,” says Jonathan Herndon
Medcen and The Children’s Hospital are grateful to Celebrity
Classic Coordinator Mike McCollum for his leadership and to the
members of the Classic committee, for their tireless preparation
and devotion to the annual event.

Your
Footprints
department
by: Debbie Schuchmann
As we enjoy summer, a time for family vacations and
time at the beach you might want to think about this as
you walk along the shore. Everyone leaves footprints
on the sands of time. Our prints are made by the
impact of our lives on others. A person is remembered
for the weight of his or her character. For indentations
of accomplishment. For shapes of kindness. For
length of compassion. For width of personal warmth.
For generosity. For values.
When we leave positive impressions behind, we
enhance the lives of our friends and loved ones. We
give them footprints to follow.
provide that extra boost to the budget that can make
the difference between program advancement and
program retrenchment.
Estate gifts can be designated for a specific area of
the hospital such as the new Comprehensive Cancer
& Research Center or they can be unrestricted for use
where needed most. They can also fund endowments
that perpetually provide an ongoing witness to your
friends and loved ones that you believe in the work of
MCCG.
3. An estate gift encourages imitation.
Thoughtful estate planning is one means we have
to make a print in the sand to help others recall our
priorities. For example, consider the effect of a plan
that includes provision for family members and
resources for charitable organizations like Medcen
Community Health Foundation.
1. An estate gift makes a positive statement.
When you include Medcen in the final disposition of
your estate, you declare to your family and friends
that you believe in and care about the mission of The
Medical Center of Central Georgia. Your parting gift
becomes a clear declaration of your values.
There’s something about a well-planned estate gift
that influences others to “go and do likewise.” As
friends and family members plan their own estates,
they may recall your generosity and thoughtfulness.
Your gift may unlock resources for the hospital from
other estates.
Debbie Schuchmann, Major Gifts and Planned
Giving Officer, and the Planned Giving Committee,
are available to provide you with the information and
materials you need to include charitable giving in your
overall estate plan.
To arrange for a personal visit, please contact Debbie
at 478-633-6151 or [email protected].
2. An estate gift provides needed funding.
Estate gifts are especially valuable, not only because
they tend to be larger than annual gifts, but also
because they often come at critical times. They

Dance Marathon is a national Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals event allowing college students
to work closely with The Children’s Hospital at The
Medical Center of Central Georgia to raise both
funds and awareness. The schools participate in
year long fundraising efforts that result in the actual
Dance Marathon where students stay up on their
feet for up to 12 hours in honor of the children who
have been through so much. They “dance” for those
who can’t. Former patients and families participate
by telling their stories and explaining why having
a local Children’s Hospital is so crucial. This year
Dance Marathons at both Mercer University and
Gerogia College and State University joined forces
and were sponsored by GEICO.
Over 200 students from Georgia College and
State University raised over $23,000 for The
Children’s Hospital. The theme for this year’s event
was “Hit The Jackpot For The Kids.” They had
Vegas inspired decorations and gave out baskets
of Vegas goodies to all the patient families who
came out to share their stories.
Mercer University’s Dance Marathon had over
75 participants and raised over $12,000 for The
Children’s Hospital. They had a Circus theme
celebrating all the patient families by engaging
them in various activities all related to a circus.
We appreciate all the hard work and dedication
of these students and the generosity of their
supporters! All their hard work and dancing really
pay off and they do it all, “For the Kids!”
