TROOP 81 River Glen Church 1140 Raymond Rd. Naperville, IL www.troop81.org “Just back from the BSA’s newest high adventure base “The Summit” near the New River Gorge in West Virginia. It certainly exceeded my expectations. The quality of all of the equipment, the activities and the program was awesome. They were correct, the 2013 Jamboree will NOT be like any other Jamboree before. This is all about high adventure. We went white water rafting on the New River. Zip lines at the Jamboree will exceed 3300 ft. There will be five zip lines next to each other and will be called “Zipzilla” reaching speeds of 50 mph. The crew loved the canopy tours through the tops of trees over 100 ft off the ground. We made the journey to the “Garden Ground” at the summit of “The Summit” (hiked over 20 miles that day). Oh and a two hour mountain bike ride through the mountains (glad I was training for Philmont and in shape). I was proud to have conducted the very first ever Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the “Garden Ground” for one of the youth in my Crew with over 1800 in attendance. Check with me if you might have an interest in attending the 2013 Jamboree or if you would like to see the awesome photos. Our council units were filled but were recently allocated another unit, so don’t delay. Those over 14 but less than 21 may attend as a Venturer. Ask me what the benefits of attending as a Venturer are!!!!!!!! Don’t let this new opportunity slip by!” ~Mr. Harrington, Scoutmaster MTG. CALENDAR Meetings begin promptly at 7 p.m. NEW INFO IS ALWAYS IN RED It’s summer! Wear your activity uniform (class B) After summer camp meetings will be every other week until September. August 9 SCORPION Water Sports Night August 23 VIKING Troop Olympics September 6 WOLVERINE TBD “Howdy, ya’all! We all been having a great time in the bee-utiful Davis Mountains of SW Texas! You shoulda seen how Mr. Nave taught his horse Carson to do the Dixie Two Step right there atop a large slippery rock. Never did Mr. Nave mention to me that he was a expert rider! I guess he’s just modest. And then there was Mr. Smith and his big ol’ mule Lester. Dat dad burned ol’ mule took a mis-step headin’ down a whole buncha steep switchbacks. So when that mule’s two front hooves slipped over the trail’s edge, Mr. Smith just shifts that big ol’ beast inta reverse and backs it up like one-a his oversized fire trucks! Scouts had a great time too. Ryan had the same ol’ mule Al had last time, a giant of an animal, 18 hands tall called Clara Belle. Ryan took to calling this critter Clarasaurus for obvious reasons. Garrett rode Indio, a purrty near black horse. Indio was a sure footed and well behaved steed. Sam rode Roscoe, a light brown critter that with a lesser horseman could a been a problem but with the calming style of that Sam, Rosco was no problem for him a’tall. “It was even steeper than it looks!” Al got himself a spirited mount this time to BTSR called Diego. Another near black colored horse. Quick and agile–had a lot of fun. And then there was Brian on the brave pony called Troy. Now last time down this lil’ fellow carried Alec K. through the mountains. Troy, is a bit of a stubborn pony to make up for his stature, but with his reigns in Brian’s hands, picked a careful trail through BTSR’s rugged terrain. Now I was a bit saddened when I learned my horse last time had retired, so this time around I was ridin’ a big ol’ horse named Zebo. This was a tawny colored horse wit’ brownish stripes on its legs a bit like a Zebra. Just like last time, they saw me as the greenhorn I am and Zebo was ‘bout as sure footed as a mountain goat. The only problem with ol’ Zebo was that there wasn’t a patch of green grass, leafy bush, or thorny weed he didn’t absolutely want to devour. Finally, we were really lucky with our two wranglers; Richard and Jennifer. Two excellent guides and horseback experts. See ya’all soon!” ~Mr. Pronger 2012 TROOP CAMPOUT AND ACTIVITY INFO PUT THESE EAGLE PROJECTS ON YOUR CALENDAR! Rajeev U. will be painting the inside of the old church offices at Our Lady of Mercy. There will be some concrete work and fencing. The dates are TBD. •S eptember 14-16: The OA Fall Fellowship at The Adventure Camp in Rochelle, IL. All OA members, youth and adult, are expected to attend. This is the final opportunity for scouts and adults elected into the OA last winter to complete their Ordeal. It is also an opportunity for many to convert their membership to Brotherhood. To convert to Brotherhood, you must have been an Ordeal member for 10 months and be current with the annual dues. If a scout or adult did their Ordeal in 2011, there is no charge for their Brotherhood, otherwise it’s $15. This is a terrific opportunity for all OA members to gather for fellowship and cheerful service. As always, for the members, there will be great food! For those interested in attending, please talk to Mr. Dubbins or Mr. Marineau. We expect to have a large turnout from Troop 81 this year! •S eptember 21-23:• Wilderness Survival The Sept. campout was requested to be held at Mr. Harrington’s property as there’s space and lots of natural materials available for building shelters, animal traps and practice of skills needed for Wilderness Survival. Mr. Pronger may offer the Archeology Merit Badge. Don’t miss the Summer Court of Honor! Sunday, August 26th starting at 4 p.m. It will begin with dinner outside on the lawn, followed by the awards ceremony at 5:00 in the church. In a couple of weeks Mrs. Simpson will send out an email about “what to bring.” All the scouts worked really hard at camp (in spite of all the fun!) so there will be tons of badges to hand out and even a few rank advancements. It’s so important for all families to plan on attending. Don’t forget–you’ll have to bring your own seating!
