Flevans’ third album sees him going totally samplefree and taking the plunge into full live instrumentation, with stunning results. ‘27 Devils’ is laden with irresistible hooks and dotted with charismatic vocal performances from guest stars Sarah Scott and Shona Foster, and Flevans himself. It's track 7 - ‘Endless Things’ that has been making me hit the repeat button on my stereo. Peaking the album in all the right ways, with a classic bassline built up with traditional percussion patterns that have been re-made for the future. The chorus kicks in and builds up into a full driven, 4/4 live funk track. A dancefloor smasher at any party, in any club, anywhere, at anytime, or just something to swing your hoover round to at home. Feel good at its very, very best. As a multi-skilled musician who plays guitar, bass and piano among other instruments, Flevans had always incorporated some of his playing skills into his music, but until recently did not fully explore his potential, relying on that trusty cut and paste basis for his previous records. Composing and playing every note on ‘27 Devils’ himself, he ventured further into uncharted territory by singing on a few tracks as well, this is an album that simply demands to be heard. ‘27 Devils’ is an addictive listen from a major talent; full of surprises and bursting at the seams with catchy hits in the making. His remixography includes LCD Soundsystem, Moby, Underworld, Air, Metronomy and Robbie Williams. Welcome to the world of Kris Menace, a man who is fast becoming known as one of the most respected producers and remixers on the planet. CD1 opens up with the iconic ‘Discopolis’ (with Lifelike) and features brand new tracks including ‘Idiosyncrasy’ and next single ‘Metropolis’ that clearly show Menace’s ability to produce sharp, modern records that are flavoured with retro synth riffs and drum patterns. CD2 eases in with the chilled ‘Sensuality’ and follows with more atmospheric slices of electronica including ‘Micropacer’ and ‘Borderline’ that both share a blissful, warm ambience. ‘Affinity’ and ‘Lightning’ pick up the tempo for some more retro tech vibes. CD3 showcases why Kris Menace is one of the most in-demand remixers today, including re-rubs for DFA kings LCD Soundsystem, Everything but the Girl’s famed Tracey Thorn, and Robbie Williams. Stonephace Stonephace Tru Thoughts RELEASE DATE: 20.04.09 Imagine if you started with one of the UK’s most celebrated and bankable jazz saxophonists and frontline musical innovators, and he wrote all the music, which he then fed to a hungry young producer, who happened to be the Cornish rave scene’s most wanted from way back when raves were raves – (surely the saxophonist’s sonic nemesis, on paper at least); and then, once he got the sound all nice and fi lthy, like nothing you’d heard before – especially not from a consummate jazz veteran the guitarist from one of the UK’s most famous and acclaimed bands came along and added his own Midas touch. If you did all that, crossed your fi ngers and hoped for a huge bestowal of “je ne sais quoi”, you would be on your way to creating your very own Stonephace, whose self titled debut features some of the best live musicians around, including main man, veteran jazz dissident Larry Stabbins on sax, Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley and bassist Jim Barr, with a guest turn from Dizzy Gillespie collaborator Guy Barker on trumpet. A must have experimental album that touches on genius rave and jazz. Classic DnB breaks roll out in ‘Ever Wanted’, but Goldie’s vocals twist throughout the track fi lling you with Metalheadz fever. The low end is fi lled by an 808 and the melody adds intelligence to the tune, all brought together by a low warping pad and bongos. It takes a few listens, but it’s a big, big grower that brings flavour to the darkside. ‘Shanghai Dub’ is something else, crossing the boundaries between Dubstep and Drum n Bass; this is a pivotal track for 2009. Futuristic effects and pads fi ll the air, and the crack of the snare whips you up. It's the heavy stomping dubstep-esque beat that pulls the track into its own, pushing any atmosphere out of the way and getting straight up into your face. The Paris drum break is twisted to a new pattern not yet heard and makes the track unstoppable on a good system Metalheadz RELEASE DATE: - MAY 09 Hint One Woman Army Remixes (Digital DJ Promo) TRU THOUGHTS We have 2 copies of this amazing album to give away, all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is text your answer to this question: fi rst CD opens up with Nomad's classic ‘Devotion’, and also carries tracks like Marradonna ‘Out of My Head’. Two legends come together in Slipmatt and Billy “Daniel” Bunter and remix some blinders from dance history including GTO's ‘Pure’, and a massive remix of ‘Infi nity’ by Guru Josh Project, with classics such as Shades of Rhythm ‘Extacy’ and some Justice thrown in. Junglists won’t be disappointed with CD 3 including bass bin wobblers ‘Renegade Snares’ by Omni Trio and king of Jungle - DJ Hype’s remix of ‘Ganja Man’ by Krome & Time. RELEASE DATE: 26.05.09 ‘One Woman Army’ featuring Laura Vane was one of the biggest vocal tunes on Hint’s stunning 2008 album, ‘Driven From Distraction’, and the Hint Club Remix gives the fiery soul song (already a dancefloor favourite), an up-to-the-minute UK funky/bassline makeover, with a specially re-recorded vocal care of Ms. Vane. Mr Beatnick’s Slow Jack Remix is a tantalizing time bomb of slow disco goodness, putting yet another amazing spin on this track. These brand new mixes are taken from the AA side of the upcoming Hint 12”, a double A side slice of vinyl which also features the new and exclusive bassline breakbeat tune, ‘Cmonstep’. A club banger bearing Hint’s trademark combination of heavy, quirky beats, marauding bassline madness and a cheekily unshakeable vocal hook. Data pulls out all the stops on this release, and really steps into the Metalheadz sound. ‘Muted’ is a minimal stripped back affair, with tight drums and a glitchy beat that creates a deep vibe. The pads cause stirs of emotion and anticipation before the drop harks back to the two steppers of the 90's. The Reece bassline brings back memories of ‘Pulp Fiction’, but bang up to date on production. The edits work in the tune and add depth to what appears to be a simple track. If you want to haunt the dancefloor, this one’s for you. Flip over to ‘Splice’ and future Tech is the message, as industrial sounding drums and drones fill the air. The drum patterns get more complicated and added to the distorted strings, build to an epic crescendo. The cinematic breakdown gears you up for a huge bassline that would tear apart front and back line of any dirty DnB event. The technical break rolls the track along and strong edits keep switching the tune up while the mid range bass drags you along with it. A relentless minimal assault Stagga Sick As Sin Rag & Bone APRIL 2009 ‘Sick As Sin’ is the big hitter with its centrepiece phrase “Dropping you out like a bong of smack and waking you up like a bong of crack”, courtesy of the vocal talents of Skamma: it’s got big tune written all over it. On the flip ‘Predatory Control Freeks’ is a different matter altogether. Wise uttering’s on the sinister intentions of the new world architects drift in and out of an eerie soundtrack. Meanwhile ‘Freight Dub’ gets deep on a smokers vibe. Its swathes of spooky synths blend perfectly with some hypnotic banter. Fans of DZ, Starkey, Raffertie, Skream, Joker and Rustie will like this. These tracks have already seen early support from the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Starkey (Planet Mu) and Sub FM DJ’s with more to follow. "Discopolis," his greatest success, was snapped by Defected and received a plethora of cheesy remixes, while current single "Scaller" (think "Ribcage" after a heavy electro-choc therapy session) has been played out by the likes of Felix da Housecat and Erol Alkan to Sasha and Pete Tong. That said, Menace has never pandered: He's always released his material on Compuphonic—his own label—and it's allowed him to remain an intriguing marginal player with a diverse sound palette and a credibility that's barely ever questioned. Instead, along with Lifelike and Frenchmen Alan Braxe and Fred Falke, Menace has simply become the 4th apostle of post-Crydamoure/Roulé filtered house, and Idiosyncrasies—his 3-CD compilation—is the sub-genre's most convincing gospel so far. CD 1, opening with "Discopolis" and closing with "Scaler," displays a strong sense of sonic identity but also keeps things varied by dropping in examples of his numerous collaborations. "Fairlight," an early pairing with Fred Falke, has the type of gorgeous end-of-night feeling usually found in Italo-disco at its most somber and obscure, while "Lumberjack," featuring Alan Braxe, is shamelessly celebratory. The stuff found on CD 2 might be lesser known but it's just as compelling: "Affinity," "Lightning," and "Enamoured" (enhanced by Braxe's trademarked bouncy bass line) are the type of electro house cuts usually best ignited by Mylo or Linus Loves, while "Poesie" and "Vanity" could be hypothetical dub versions of Klymaxx-like, early-'80s electro funk; "Dreamsequence," meanwhile, wouldn't sound of place at the end of a Vangelissponsored soundtrack. With tracks such as "Stereophonic," "Snapshot" and "Steamroller," Menace mixes early Chicago house influences with NYC garage from a filtered house perspective: All that's missing is Crystal Waters or Ce Ce Peniston singing about finding pure love with Mr. Right on top. In fact, Menace's dedication to instrumentals is one of the few things that holds him back from a crossover moment. You can hear his hesitation in his remixes, where you'd be lucky to recognize any traces of Tracey Thorn's warm tone or Roisin Murphy's quirky presence. The remixing jobs gathered on CD 3, indeed often seem more like monologues Menace is having with himself in the studio rather than actual exchanges with the remixee: his take on Metronomy's "Heartbreaker" is, in this sense, the only moment of faithfulness you'll find on here. Otherwise, you can tell Menace knows this is part of his appeal, and this is why he barely lets Robbie Williams, Moby or Underworld voice any concern (and probably why attention-loving stars such as Madonna and Britney aren't begging for remixes). Idiosyncrasies is hard to indulge in one take—as any 3 CD collection is—but it's mostly a question of quantity, not quality. We always tend to assume that Justice and the Ed Bangers are Daft Punk's true heirs, and on some level, this is accurate. Yet those in search of Discovery-era digital frissons should look no further than this, the unlikeliest—dare I say "idiosyncratic"?—gospel you'll ever hear. Discography information comes from MusicBrainz. You can add or edit information about Idiosyncracies (disc 2) at musicbrainz.org. BBC Review this is a case of more turning out to be less. Chris Power 2009-05-14 Kris Menace, or Christophe Hoeffel to his mother, is certainly industrious. Active on the dance scene since 2005, he has already started two record labels (Work It Baby and Compuphonic), and produced a huge array of original tracks and remixes. So it seems fitting in the light of this prodigious work-rate that Idiosyncrasies, his debut album, should be spread over three discs and last around three hours. Impressive as that is, however, it's less appealing when it becomes apparent that despite its great length, this is an album that's short on ideas. Tracks Menace's sound is typified by opener Discopolis. Uplifting synths play a bright, simple melody that slowly rises up around a tight and straightforward four-to-thefloor beat, the building tension finally released with the advent of the type of solidly funky electro bassline familiar to fans of Alan Braxe and Fred Falke, the French duo who specialised, before their split in 2008, in shiny disco-house nuggets exemplified by their 2000 smash hit Running. 1 Sensuality 2 Micropacer 3 Borderline 4 Affinity 5 Poesie 6 Lightning 7 Challenger (feat. Douze) 8 Midnight 9 Dreamsequence Menace went on to work with both Falke and Braxe and those collaborations are included here. By far the best of his co-productions, however, is 2008's Stereophonic. This is a reworking of the 1995 track Stereo by seminal progressive house producers Spooky, but while it is thrilling – a rising organ melody around which a swirling synth melody weaves itself before breaking into a rock solid breakbeat – it's really no more than a slowed down version of the original track. 10 Enamoured (feat. Fred Falke) 11 Cybernatic Menace's own productions don't stray far from the formula of those already mentioned. Even those tracks on the remix disc, from his version of LCD Soundsystem's North American Scum to Robbie Williams's She's Madonna, are more or less interchangeable with his own original productions. Only his spacey take on Metronomy's Heartbreaker and Moroder-bassline remix of Underworld's Ring Road (which harks back to their own King Of Snake) sound distinctive. And therein lies the problem. Generously priced as a single album Idiosyncrasies potentially offers plenty of bang for your buck, but given the uniform nature of the music on offer this is a case of more turning out to be less. 12 Vanity 13 Electrcity (feat. His debut album is a 3 disc affair – and disappointingly doesn’t see him team up with any vocalists. We’d love to hear him produce some well-known artists rather than just remix them. But that aside, there’s lots of rich pickings to be found here. It’s a joy to hear his various classics brought together in album form – we’re reminded of the stunning, hypnotic euphoria of Discopolis and Jupiter, the ‘80s synth-pop joyfulness of Fairlight and Lumberjack, the housey bassline funk of Artificial and the crowd-pleasing piano and breaks stomp of Stereophonic. Out of the new cuts, current single Metropolis retreads old ground in a reasonably simple fashion, but still makes for a pleasant listen, Invaders with Hexstatic is a misguided reworking of the classic arcade game (too messy and haphazard), Steamroller is like an instrumental Depeche Mode in full-on party mode, and the hectic rave vibes of Snapshot and Scaler represent a real departure from his usual sound. Disc 2 offers a more mellow, home listening vibe. The textures, sounds and ideas are similar, but slowed down and given a softer tint. Micropacer goes full on electro-disco, borrowing liberally from past glories, and indeed this disc is at its best when doing so – taking the sounds of classic electro and synth pop, but steering the focus away from vocals and towards the fun, emotive sounds. Dreamsequence is Labyrinth-esque epicness and Enamoured It’s generally a bit too similar though – meaning much of the disc passes you by. The final disc gathers up some of his best remixes (of which there have been a huge amount now), including top reworkings of LCD Soundsystems’ North American Scum (giving it a euphoric, floaty going over) and of Tracey Thorn’s It’s All True (a simple but effective beefing up of the superb original). With so much to digest here and very similar sounds running through much of it, it’s a bit excessive and frequently a bit forgettable, which is a shame as a more succinct collection mixing up his dancefloor and other material would have left more of a mark. There’s no doubt that he’s a real talent though, with plenty of quality here to enjoy – but it just goes to show that you can have too much of a good thing. When he's not remixing everyone from Royksopp to LCD Soundsystem and Moby, Menace has been compiling his long awaited debut album, Idiosyncrasies, that's grown into a three disc monster. But here's something short and tasty that boils down his sound in three and half minutes: "Electricity," which features Mr. Falke's coiled bass guitar licks, explodes with colorful and slightly retro melodies that encircle listeners heads like electro satellites. Kris Menace Idiosyncrasies Label: Compuphonic/ New State Music Released: Apr 20 2009 Genre: Techno Review by: K* Tue, May 12 2009 back to Album Reviews Kris Menace Idiosyncrasies Something of a retrospective collection from Mr Menace, 'Idiosyncrasies' features tracks from 2005 debut 'Discopolis' onwards, covering just about everything in a 3-CD box. It’s quite difficult to imagine that there's enough sufficient hardcore fans out there to require such a tome, but as the blurb boasts with “over three hours” of material, you’d have to be pretty hardcore to stay the course. CD1 has you playing a spot the influence type game with its crowd-pleasing Techno Lite ditties. 'Fairlight' seems to be an ode to 80s cheese, coming off like every riff ever done on a Romo keyboard and hexagonal drum kit with some Boogie Nights porno guitars chucked in for measure. 'Voyage' is a little too like the instrumental of 'Everything She Wants' by Wham! While 'Scaler' is something of an anti-climax, for something that's apparently got big-name DJs in a spin monotonous mid-tempo sets of scales, firstly in a slightly enchanted house, then later in a slightly haunted one. Call Derek Acorah, I need to contact a melody! CD2 delivers more chilled twiddlings, stopping by early 80s jazz-funk and never quite reaching early Prince; pleasant enough stuff, though. Christophe can clearly twiddle the production knobs slickly and deftly, but it seems to be missing some soul, some oomph, some balls. CD3, the remixes, brings some redemption. Sort of! But it's disappointing that there's so little of LCD in the 'North American Scum' rework, and absolutely no Tracey Thorn in 'It’s All True'. There’s also mercifully little of Robbie Williams in his remix either - a definite improvement. Ultimately, though, if you can’t bring something fresh to the party, why bother? The formula works best on Metronomy’s 'Heartbreaker' but then it’s hard to mess up what is already a great song. All in all, most people should like something amongst the three CDs – just try taking it one hour at a time. Read on to find out more about the prizes and for entry details… Hell – Teufelswerk [Gigolo Recordings] Teufelswerk – the German for Devil’s Work – might well be DJ Hell’s masterpiece. Across two discs and 16 tracks, the album is divided into two themes, Night and Day – the former offers a contemporary interpretation of Chicago house and Detroit techno, the latter finds Hell embracing the cosmic groove of his roots. “The album is very personal,” he says. “All my knowledge is there. I went back really far to the early 70s. I don’t think I can make a better record.” If you’re familiar with Hell’s earlier albums, 1998’s Munich Machine and 2004’s NY Muscle, will recognise the Night half of the album, with comes complete with collaborations with P Diddy and Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music fame. “The Night album is what people expect from a guy like me,” says Hell. “I choose a lot of producers in different studios with different sounds and put my flavour there. It is from a DJ for the other DJs.” The Day CD – produced with Peter Kruder – is Hell’s take on Kosmische Musik music, that style of ‘70s psychedelic experimental boogie played by Can and Neu! This is the music that inspired the beginning of Hell’s career. “I have done Kosmische Musik in a new way,” he says. “This is where I come from, I grew up with the early German electronic pioneers of music, and this is why I went in this direction. Often it is called German electronic avant-garde, or psychedelic music. I went back to the ‘70s and tried to do it in my own way. Teufelswerk represents the music in the best way: it’s the work of the devil – and it’s the work of me, the work of Hell.” Teufelswerk is out on Gigolo Recordings on April 27. Visit www.djhell.com and www.myspace.com/djhell DJ Hell – Eleven [Gigolo Recordings] Here’s more goodness from DJ Hell’s International Deejay Gigolo imprint with the latest showcase compilation – the 11th unmixed double CD compilation – for all those fans and fanatics of the ‘Mega-Church of Gigolo’. Including 16 never-before-heard monster tracks, the album is a celebration of the label’s avant-garde and legendary roster – and we reckon this is one of Gigolo’s strongest comps in a long time. CD one kicks off with DJ Pierre’s I’ve Lost Control. There’s also Peter Kruder’s excellent Visions Ltd, IMB’s Kill Bill, Opiates’ Candy Coated Crime, G.rizo featuring DJ Glow & Donovan with Boys Medley, Hell’s own The Disaster, plus tracks from Joel Alter, The Model, Motor, Richard Bartz, Acid Junkies, Captain Commodore and Seelenluft. CD two features tunes from Actor One, Marascia, Fetische &Me, Snuff Crew, Herman Schwartz, Abe Duque, Lopazz, Bennie A, Heib, Joe Le Bone, Phobia. Eleven is out now on Gigolo Recordings. Visit www.djhell.com and www.myspace.com/djhell Evil Nine – They Live [Marine Parade] It’s been out for a while now, by Evil Nine’s second album – the zombieinspired They Live – still sounds as good as when it dropped back in the autumn. Here’s what Eddy Temple Morris has to say about them: “Evil Nine have always been one step ahead of the game, what amazes me now is they're still ahead, even when they're being 'retro'. You Can Be Special Too was a tough act to follow, but the Evils have done it, stylishly, unpredictably and with their unique panache.” You can get hold of a copy of the album and a T-shirt to help celebrate the release of Icicles, the third single from the long-player, which comes with remixes by Evil Nine themselves, label boss Adam Freeland, Shir Khan and UNKLE. And like the previous singles, it also comes with its own Zombie video.“We wrote this specifically to be the last track on the album, the epic last song, the emotional goodbye and that’s just what it is,” says Pat Pardy. “Seraphim's sweet, heartfelt vocal just pushes the point even further – goodbye!” Icicles, featuring Seraphim, is out on Marine Parade on April 27. Visit www.evilnine.net and www.myspace.com/evilnine Blackbelt Andersen – Blackbelt Andersen [Full Pupp] Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp follows up its extremely well received Greatest Tits Vol. 1 compilation with the eponymously titled debut artist album from the uber-talented Blackbelt Andersen. Norway-based Full Pupp has built an incredible reputation in four short years, and thanks to singles from the likes of Todd Terje, and Thomas they’ve helped bring the Oslo nu-disco sound to the masses. Andersen has become a key part of the Norway scene both as DJ and producer. He is co-resident at the Full Pupp night and has guested across the globe from Berlin to Beijing. Musically his roots are sunk in the sounds of Detroit techno and Scandinavian disco, with his productions in recent years taking on a unique quality mixing a whole host of styles. This debut album is an infectious mix of motor city strings, Brazilian rhythms and arpeggiated disco basslines. This results in a 70+ minute smorgasbord of instrumental, cosmic disco blended together that is set to be a future classic. Blackbelt Andersen is out now on Full Pupp. Visit www.myspace.com/blackbeltandersen and www.myspace.com/fullpupp Specimen A – Hazardous Material [Funkatech] Following up where part one of Hazardous Material left off, Specimen A return with a vengeance this year to dose us with another infectious load of beats and toxic bass. The first track on this new EP pays homage to the credit crunch – titled Hard Times, it’s a 130bpm breakbeat behemoth with thundering basslines, electronic wobbles and raw beats. Flip for Exodus RIP, a reworking of their 2007 track Exodus into a much more ferocious beast. Hazardous Material Pt.2 is out on Funkatech on April 27. Visit www.myspace.com/specimenauk and www.funkatech.com Breakfastaz – Acting Wrong [The Breakfast Club] After smashing their way back into the record boxes of all and sundry last year with a swathe of releases on their own label The Breakfast Club, The Breakfastaz continue their barnstorming return to form with new single Acting Wrong. For their latest offering, they’ve teamed up with UK soul sensation Meshach Broderick to combine silky vocals with the kind of drums, bass and synth lines that have made every Breakfastaz release an absolute essential for any self-respecting breaks DJ. The flip sees Ctrl Z on remix duties, providing their vision of the 2008 Breakfastaz smash Girls, Money, Drink And Drugs featuring MC Ivory. “It’s another fat and devastating Breakfastasz production,” says Krafty Kuts. “Cool and slick vocals, smooth edits and the quirky licks, one of my favourite tracks they have written so far. More please.” Acting Wrong/Girls, Money, Drink And Drugs is out now on The Breakfast Club. Underworld - Ring Road you might expect from an Ibiza anthem. The focus is instead on synths, which he uses to paint a warm, blissful sound. It's on Jupiter, an exercise in perfect dancefloor tension, reaching a true MDMA-esque peak, that these find best expression. Scaler is also worthy of singling out as an atypically sweaty, techno-styled number built around a series of ascending riffs. Elsewhere, Menace is unafraid to dabble in uncool. You might expect an epic track that features squally 80s guitar over synths to be naff, yet Fairlight pt. 1 & pt. 2 somehow manages to enthrall. There's certainly some strange irony in a remix of Robbie Williams' She's Madonna being better than one of LCD Soundsystem's North American Scum. (It's all down to that Kraftwerkian synth.) In truth, though, remixes don't seem to suit Menace well, with most tracks reduced to a mid-tempo plod. The main exception is his take on Underworld's Ring Road, which bears a striking resemblance to The Chemical Brothers' Out of Control and thus is rather wonderful. Away from the mind-blowing stuff, Idiosyncrasies tends towards the samey and mediocre. Most of disc two sounds like incidental music from a "night spot" scene in Neighbours. Still, filler is perhaps to be expected on such a collection, and there is a smattering enough of excellence to recommend this to electronica fans. A massive 3CD collection of something old, some new and something borrowed – the latter a handful of acclaimed remixes for the likes of Robbie Williams, Underworld, Roisin Murphy, Tracey Thorn, LCD Soundsystem and Moby. As to the new bits there’s his latest single, ‘Scaler’, (another tasty slice of clean, crisp and irresistible electronica, fast gaining support from Soulwax, Erol Alkan and Laurent Garnier); the previously released singles ‘Voyage’, ‘Fairlight’, ‘Steamroller’ and ‘Jupiter’ (the latter becoming one of Beatport’s biggest downloads in 2006) and a handful of material with long time friend and DJ partner Alan Braxe. His mix of Italo disco, ‘80s electro-pop and euphoric house is an unashamedly joyful one, and as witnessed on countless gorgeous singles (Jupiter, Fairlight, Lumberjack) and stunning remixes for some of the biggest musicians in the world, he’s got an enduring talent. It’s very exciting then, to hear that his debut album Idiosyncrasies is finally on the way – and it’s no ordinary debut album. It’s a triple CD – with the first 2 CDs featuring his own productions both old and new, with collaborations alongside the likes of regular partner Fred Falke, Hexstatic, Spooky and Felix Da Housecat. Then the third CD rounds up some of his finest remixes – including one of our faves, his re-rub of Tracey Thorn’s It’s All True. So it’s kind of like half greatest hits, half new material. The album will be released on his own Compuphonic label in April. About Me Isaac Ashe Multi Media Journalist View my complete profile Contact Me ○○○○● I LIKE to listen to music in my car. And working in Loughborough, around 40-45 minutes from my house in Ashby-dela-Zouch, I can normally listen to a full album on the daily commute. Now granted I am referring to Good Friday - so there was probably a little less traffic on the roads than usual - but I pressed play on Kris Menace's three-CD marathon debut Idiosycrasies as I left for work, and as I reached the Echo office the CD was in the dying throes of Jupiter, a mere track three on the album. Up-and-coming electronic producer Kris Menace, no relation to Dennis The, is not a man to do things in a rush. In fact, if you were to listen to this album start to finish it would take more than three hours from your day. Aside from that gripe, Idiosyncrasies, which is made up of two CDs of original work and one of remixes, is still a worthwhile listen, made up of slow-growing, DJ-friendly electro and house tracks and some nifty remix work. The likes of Soulwax, Erol Alkan, Pete Tong and Laurent Garnier are all already vocal supporters of Menace, and should you have the time to listen, I'm sure he'll grow on you. Primal Scream cohort and ex Sabre Jagz Kooner wants to work with him. His remixography includes LCD Soundsystem, Moby, Underworld, Air, Metronomy and Robbie Williams. Welcome to the world of Kris Menace, a man who is fast becoming known as one of the most respected producers and remixer’s on the planet. Famed for his Italo disco-inspired tracks, Menace’s debut single Discopolis became one of the biggest dance tunes of 2005, a bona fide Ibiza anthem that got picked up by Defected Records and helped lay the groundwork for Kris to become one of the hottest names in the scene. Kris launched the label Compuphonic as a vehicle for his own productions and with this Menace’s popularity continued to grow with tracks such as Voyage, Fairlight, Steamroller and Jupiter the latter becoming one of Beatport’s biggest downloads in 2006. He also began DJing with friend and legendary producer in his own right Alan Braxe, leading to the collaboration single Lumberjack released on Vulture Music in June 2007 (featured on this release). Kris is also the label owner of house label Work It Baby where he has nurtured the careers of Fred Falke, Patrick Alavi, Lifelike and Serge Santiago. 2009 looks set to be Menace’s biggest year to date, starting with the release of his debut album, Idiosyncrasies. A triple disc collection of classic tracks interspersed with fresh new productions, collaborations and remixes; this release single-handedly proves a capsule-like answer why Menace has made such a big impact in the electronic scene to date. At long last, he’s released a whole lot of material in one slick, satisfying shot - MIXMAG ‘Idiosyncrasies’ should secure his club and car stereo domination for years to come - DJ ‘Idiosyncrasies’ forms an impeccable story-so-far showcase that should gain Menace the credit and wider attention that’s been long overdue’ – IDJ CD1 opens up with the iconic Discopolis (with Lifelike) and features brand new tracks including Idiosyncrasy and next single Metropolis that clearly show Menace’s ability to produce sharp, modern records that are flavoured with retro synth riffs and drum patterns. Classic back-catalogue tracks Jupiter and Voyage show off a spacey, tech-funk vibe while collaborations come from the likes of Hexstatic for the frantic re-edit of Invaders, house legend Felix Da Housecat for Artificial and Kris takes on a classic from dance pioneers Spooky and the results are the sublime Stereophonic. The first disc finishes with the current club destroyer Scaler that has everyone from Soulwax and Erol Alkan through to Style Of Eye and A-Trak claiming it’s one of their biggest tunes. CD2 eases in with the chilled Sensuality and follows with more atmospheric slices of electronica including Micropacer and Borderline that both share a blissful, warm ambience. Affinity and Lightning pick up the tempo for some more retro tech vibes and collaborations come from Douze for the sultry Challenger and Fred Falke joins Menace for Enamoured and Electricity. CD3 showcases why Kris Menace is one of the most in-demand remixer’s today, including re-rubs for DFA kings LCD Soundsystem, Everything But The Girl famed Tracey Thorn, Roisin Murphy, French electronica act Air, Metronomy and Robbie Williams. So there you have it. Three CDs, thirty-seven titles and over three hours of music showcasing Kris Menaces’ musical career to date and justifying the hype behind this fantastic artist. Kris launched the label Compuphonic as a vehicle for his own productions and with this Menace’s popularity continued to grow with tracks such as Voyage, Fairlight, Steamroller and Jupiter - the latter becoming one of Beatport’s biggest downloads in 2006. CD1 opens up with the iconic Discopolis (with Lifelike) and features brand new tracks including Idiosyncrasy and next single Metropolis that clearly show Menace’s ability to produce sharp, modern records that are flavoured with retro synth riffs and drum patterns.
