MICHAEL DOWLING
I venture to say that no one becomes a doctor without wanting to do
the right thing for their patients. Similarly, no one becomes a researcher
without believing strongly that they can cure disease. They are both highly
motivated, intensely driven individuals who want to make a difference. The
magic happens when you can bring the two disciplines together and have
them work collaboratively to advance medicine and science.
That’s what’s happening at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research,
where scientists and clinical researchers are finding answers to some of the
world’s most challenging clinical problems to improve the lives of others.
Their discoveries have an impact on individuals’ lives around the world,
contributing to new treatments, drugs and equipment.
With an international reputation for excellence, the Feinstein Institute has
been able to attract the finest talent—scientific professionals who thrive in a
supportive environment that encourages investigation, original thought and
research. This diverse group of professionals has an equally diverse range
of research interests. Recognized by their peers in their respective fields,
Feinstein Institute scientists receive funding from the National Institutes of
Health and other major institutions, and their findings are published in the
most-respected scientific journals in the nation. Their work sparks ideas and
contributes to global conversations on important medical issues, ranging
from autoimmune disease and bioelectronic medicine to neurological
disorders and behavioral health.
Thanks to its donors’ generosity, the Feinstein Institute can continue to
conduct groundbreaking research, work with partners in the scientific
community on research projects, host symposia which explore topics of
interests and train tomorrow’s physician-scientists. We are grateful for

KEVIN J. TRACEY, MD
The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research is an exceptional, internationallyrenowned organization of professionals with a responsibility to innovate and
create the future, not wait for it. My colleagues and I prioritize collaboration—
teaming with experts throughout the North Shore-LIJ Health System and
other notable institutions—to produce knowledge necessary to cure disease.
We rely on each other as expert, steadfast, and collegial teammates—knowing
that together we will accomplish our goals.

The Feinstein Institute produced tremendous achievements in 2014 and 2015.
In 2014, Feinstein Institute investigators published new insights into how to
treat brain disorders in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and a discovery
of new genes, pathways and cell types involved in inherited susceptibility to
rheumatoid arthritis in Nature. Kanti R. Rai, MD, an internationally-renowned
leukemia researcher and hematologist, was recognized by the American
Society of Hematology with the Society’s highest honor, the 2014 Wallace H.
Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology. The Feinstein Institute
established collaborations with the University of Notre Dame, Natera, Inc., a
leader in non-invasive genetic testing and i360medical Ltd., an Irish medical device innovation company. Also in 2014, the
Feinstein Institute established the first Brain Tumor Biotech Center with Voices Against Brain Cancer. Molecular Medicine,
our peer-reviewed, open-access journal published its 20th anniversary edition. We announced a strategic affiliation to
align the world-class cancer research of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory with our network of clinical services to accelerate
cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Peter Davies, PhD, head of the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of
Alzheimer’s Disease, received one of the highest honors in neurology, the American Academy of Neurology’s Potamkin
Prize for Research in Pick’s, Alzheimer’s and Related Diseases. And we launched an important new strategic initiative to
lead the nascent field of bioelectronic medicine, an idea that was featured in the March issue of Scientific American.
With the strong foundation established over the past years and the extraordinary researchers here, the Feinstein Institute
is ideally and uniquely positioned for growth and continued success. This vision will be put into action with the support of

As the research enterprise of North Shore-LIJ Health System, The Feinstein
Institute for Medical Research stands at the threshold of an extraordinary time
in medicine. The passion and quest for breakthroughs demonstrated each
day by researchers at the Feinstein Institute is exemplified by award-winning
achievements and widespread recognition by the scientific community.
Working in laboratories and on clinical research programs, our scientists
have devoted their lives to making our community a healthier place. They
understand, firsthand, the needs of the people we serve and use this
knowledge to develop new drugs and treatments.
As you can see by the profiles of the outstanding researchers at work at the
Feinstein Institute throughout this report, the future is bright with potential.
Exemplary achievements, such as the advances we’re leading in bioelectronic

The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research is

Excellence with more than 100 research programs.

Feinstein Institute researchers perform and
integrate basic and clinical science to discover
causes and cures for numerous diseases. They
have made groundbreaking discoveries in cancer,
Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, lupus,
arthritis, sepsis, psychiatric illnesses including
schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and many

CENTER FOR ALZHEIMER’S
DISEASE & MEMORY DISORDERS
The Center for Alzheimer’s
Disease & Memory Disorders is
the only dedicated Alzheimer’s
disease research facility on
Long Island. Those in the center
are committed to identifying
new ways to detect and treat
Alzheimer’s disease. This effort
is critical not only to our local
community, but to the population
overall—as a result of the aging
population and increased life
expectancy, the number of
Americans age 65 and older with
Alzheimer’s disease may nearly
triple by 2050.
PETER DAVIES, PHD
Head of the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease
& Memory Disorders
When Dr. Davies was a teenager, his
biology class took a field trip to a school for
developmentally disabled children. Many
of the children suffered from serious brain
disorders, which made a huge impression
on Dr. Davies at the time. He wanted to
understand how the children developed
these brain disorders, and when he asked
his teacher how he could pursue this, he was
advised to study biochemistry. This advice
put him on his path to scientific discovery.

CENTER FOR AUTOIMMUNE &
MUSCULOSKELETAL DISEASE
The immune system is a complex
set of cells and tissues that
protect the body from invaders
such as viruses or bacteria.
Sometimes, however, this system
goes awry and mistakes our own
cells as invaders and repeatedly
8
attacks them—this is called
autoimmunity. Researchers in
the Center for Autoimmune &
Musculoskeletal Disease focus
on major types of autoimmune
diseases, including arthritis,
lupus, hearing disorders, multiple
sclerosis, spinal cord injury
and disc degeneration. They
extensively research the function
of risk genes and the mechanisms
of tissue injury and develop novel
therapies to treat them.

BETTY DIAMOND, MD
Head of the Center for Autoimmune &
Musculoskeletal Disease
Dr. Diamond’s father, uncle and brother
were all interested in history, so she
felt influenced to pursue art history.
Throughout school, however, she
discovered that she was interested in
science. Finally, in her senior year of
college, she thought What am I going to
do with an art history degree? I don’t want
to teach. Even though a very competitive
career in research wasn’t the easiest path,
Dr. Diamond couldn’t ignore her passion
for science. From the moment she first
learned about lupus in medical school,
she knew she wanted to study it and
hopefully make a difference in the lives of
patients suffering from autoimmune and
musculoskeletal diseases.
CENTER FOR
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE
Researchers in the Center for
Biomedical Science discovered
that the brain controls the
immune system—more
specifically, a nerve in the neck
signals the release of natural
chemicals the body needs to treat
disease. The center is pioneering
a new field of medicine called
bioelectronic medicine, which
uses small devices to tell the
body to treat itself without
manufactured drugs or their side
effects. Bioelectronic medicine
has the potential to treat a wideranging number of diseases,
including arthritis, lupus, obesity,
type 2 diabetes, inflammatory
bowel disease and even
certain cancers.

KEVIN J. TRACEY, MD
Head of the Center for Biomedical Science
As a neurosurgery resident, Dr. Tracey met an
11-month-old named Janice who arrived in
an ambulance with burns covering 75 percent
of her body. She was accidently burned by her
grandmother who was cooking, tripped and
doused Janice with a pot of boiling spaghetti.
Janice spent three weeks recovering in the
burn unit and eventually stabilized. At the
time, Dr. Tracey played with Janice, who was
happy, smiling and giggling. The next day,
her medical team was shocked to find her
dead. There was no medical explanation for
her death, Dr. Tracey was haunted by her
case and focused his career path toward
researching inflammation, which he believed
caused Janice’s unexpected death.

CENTER FOR CHRONIC
LYMPHOCYTIC LEUKEMIA
Those in the Center for Chronic
Lymphocytic Leukemia study
the activation and maturation
of B-lymphocytes, and use this
information to develop and test
new diagnostics and treatments
for patients suffering from chronic

lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
CLL is a B-lymphocyte cancer
that resides in the blood, bone
marrow and lymphoid tissues.
It is the most common type of
leukemia in adults. It is called
“chronic” because it progresses
more slowly than other types
of leukemia.

Head of the Center for Chronic
Lymphocytic Leukemia
Dr. Chiorazzi trained at North Shore
University Hospital and returned 13 years
later as a scientist. It was at this time
that he made discoveries in CLL B cells,
which compelled Dr. Chiorazzi to turn
his focus exclusively to CLL. He and his
colleagues in the center have investigated
the control of CLL B cell activation, and
their findings have significantly impacted
the understanding of leukemia cells in
patients with CLL. Dr. Chiorazzi continues
to conduct research in the hopes of curing
the disease.
CENTER FOR GENOMICS &
HUMAN GENETICS
The mission of the Center for
Genomics & Human Genetics
is to identify and understand
the genetic contribution to
human diseases and translate
these discoveries into new
diagnostics and therapeutics.
Center researchers are focused
on autoimmune diseases and
neuropsychiatric traits and
disorders, and conduct a full
range of human genetics research.
PETER K. GREGERSEN, MD
Head of the Center for Genomics &
Human Genetics
When Dr. Gregersen was a medical resident
in the late 1970s, a young woman with
lupus died under his care and he realized at
that moment there was a need to generate
knowledge about autoimmune diseases. He
then began a rheumatology fellowship at a
time when modern molecular biology and
genetics were exploding, and he successfully
cloned the first HLA genes for rheumatoid
arthritis. This convinced him that research
was the most important and exciting thing
he could do with his life. Today, Dr. Gregersen
pursues genetics research with a highly
collaborative style, providing him with
extraordinary connections and friendships
around the world.

CENTER FOR HEART &
LUNG RESEARCH
The Center for Heart & Lung
Research brings together
basic and clinical scientists
who have an interest in the
cardiopulmonary system. A major
focus of the Center is the study
of pulmonary hypertension, a
12
condition that can occur at any
age. Blood vessels in the lungs
narrow, causing poor blood flow
through the lungs. This results in
low oxygen in the blood, pressure
in the lungs and a strain on the
heart, which eventually causes
the heart to fail. The center
studies the cardiopulmonary
mechanisms that are
dysfunctional and their effects on
other organs, including the brain.
The goal of this research is to
prevent or correct the dysfunction
to improve quality of life and
prevent death.

EDMUND J. MILLER, PHD
Head of the Center for Heart &
Lung Research
Dr. Miller started his scientific career
in a pathology department, analyzing
samples from patients to try to diagnose
a disease state. He later joined a
research group that studied acute lung
injury. He was intrigued and fulfilled
by this work and continues to study
acute lung injury as well as chronic
lung dysfunction. His current interest is
in developing a better understanding
of the mechanisms involved when the
lung does not function properly and the
consequences for both the lungs and
the rest of the body. To him, the exciting
part of research is the development
of new ways to treat individuals with
lung disease.
CENTER FOR IMMUNOLOGY &
INFLAMMATION
Immunology & Inflammation
focus on understanding the basic
biological principles of the immune
system that protects the body
against infections, environmental
hazards and internal challenges,
and how this system is impaired
in disease. They carry out basic,
translational, and patient-oriented
research on a range of immune and
inflammatory disorders, including
sepsis, allergy and hypersensitivity,
kidney injury, cancer, immune
deficiency, HIV infection and
conditions affecting maternal, fetal
and neonatal health. Their ultimate

Growing up on Long Island, Dr. Sherry never
knew a scientist, but she was always interested
in science and it was her dream to work in a
laboratory. In middle school, she spent a year
working on her own research project that won
her the school’s top award and gave her the
opportunity to describe her research findings
to her teachers and fellow students. She loved
sharing what she discovered with others. From
that moment, she was determined to pursue a
career in research.

CENTER FOR MOLECULAR
INNOVATION
The Center for Molecular
Innovation leads the discovery
and development of novel
therapeutics for human diseases,
including lupus, arthritis,
diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and
sepsis. It integrates approaches

in target discovery with medicinal
chemistry to generate small
organic compounds and potential
drugs. The center has successfully
identified several drug candidates
and has repurposed existing
drugs to target critical proteins
involved in neurodegenerative
and autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Al-Abed, center, in the lab
YOUSEF AL-ABED, PHD
Head of the Center for
Molecular Innovation
Like most 14-year-olds, Dr. Al-Abed liked
to play with his neighborhood friends. One
day, he witnessed something that he could
not comprehend; his best friend had his
first seizure. No one knew what to do. For
Dr. Al-Abed, those minutes were the longest
of his life. Later, Dr. Al-Abed learned that
his friend was diagnosed with epilepsy. He
was shocked by how suddenly his friend
changed from being just like him to being
afflicted with illness. He was consumed with
the question of how one day people can be
“normal” and then the next day completely
changed. This question compelled Dr.
Al-Abed to pursue chemistry, science and
medicine, inspiring his work to discover new
therapies to help patients.
CENTER FOR NEUROSCIENCE
Neuroscience is to shed light on
the abnormalities of functional
brain organization that underlie
nervous system disease. To
characterize these networks
as biomarkers of disease and
treatment, investigators use
multimodal brain imaging
in conjunction with novel
computational methods. Study
populations include healthy
volunteers and patients with
Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s
disease, Huntington’s disease,
dystonia and Tourette syndrome.
DAVID EIDELBERG, MD
Head of the Center for Neuroscience
Dr. Eidelberg’s post-doctoral training led to a
position in a research lab working with PET
imaging. He brought PET research to North
Shore University Hospital two decades ago.
Since that time, he has developed novel
imaging techniques that aid in diagnosing
and evaluating the progression of
Parkinson’s disease. His state-of-the-art PET
imaging methods are also used to further
understand how current therapies treat
Parkinson’s disease.

CELL BIOLOGY
Oncology & Cell Biology study
cancer and related aspects of
cell biology, all geared toward
understanding the abnormal
growth and behavior of cells
that have been malignantly

transformed. These efforts
include finding ways to harness
the body’s own immune system
to attack cancerous growths
through antibodies and T cells,
approaches that are currently in
clinical trials.

Head of the Center for Oncology &
Cell Biology
One Saturday morning, at age 12,
Dr. Rothstein awoke with severe abdominal
pain. After an office examination, he
overheard the doctor telling his parents
“you know, people still die from ruptured
appendices.” As he recovered from surgery,
those words rang in Dr. Rothstein’s ears.
It was then that he decided to become a
doctor so that he could help others. A year
later, Dr. Rothstein had his first science
class in 7th grade. He was, for the first time,
exposed to the world of scientific thinking
and was totally captivated. These two
experiences put Dr. Rothstein on the track
he continues to pursue today—being an
MD/PhD physician-scientist, who advances
science to improve patients’ lives.
CENTER FOR PATIENT-ORIENTED
RESEARCH
The major goal for investigators
in the Center for Patient-Oriented
Research is patient-directed
research. This includes clinical
trials, epidemiology and
statistics and focused laboratory
science. For example, a team of
researchers in the center focuses
on the elucidation of the genetics
and pathophysiology of DiamondBlackfan anemia (DBA), a rare
bone marrow disorder. They work
to translate laboratory knowledge
into relevant diagnostic and
therapeutic tools.

JEFFREY M. LIPTON, MD, PHD
Head of the Center for Patient-Oriented
Research
As a grade school student, after seeing
the Soviet Union launch Sputnik in 1957,
Dr. Lipton knew he wanted to be a scientist.
But, his fear of heights and poor sense of
direction steered him away from aerospace
and toward the lab. He obtained his MD and
PhD and his long-standing interest in the
biology of blood cell production led him to
focus on Diamond-Blackfan anemia.

CENTER FOR PSYCHIATRIC
NEUROSCIENCE
Psychiatric Neuroscience is to
study behavioral health to identify
causes, triggers, markers and
treatments for such illnesses as
bipolar disorder, schizophrenia
and other psychotic disorders.

Combining different perspectives
in multi-disciplinary research is
key to making advances in these
illnesses. The Feinstein Institute
and the Zucker Hillside Hospital
provide valuable platforms to
advance such efforts.

JOHN M. KANE, MD
Head of the Center for Psychiatric
Neuroscience
Dr. Kane has been fascinated by behavior
and emotion since he was a child. In
medical school, he encountered a
patient who suffered from schizophrenia
and bizarre delusions. Dr. Kane was
intrigued by these dramatic and disabling
symptoms, and was even more interested
in how medicines available at the time
reduced patients’ symptoms. Since
that day, Dr. Kane has been dedicated
to researching drug discovery and the
development of new treatments for
schizophrenia.
THE CENTER FOR
TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH
The Center for Translational
Research promotes the
identification of therapeutic
targets, the development
of treatment strategies,
and the validation of
preclinical studies, leading to
commercialized technologies
for diagnosing or treating
human disease. Through
cohesive collaboration,
researchers in the center work
together and share ideas in
hope of advancing biomedical
technologies in various
research fields.
PING WANG, MD
Head of the Center for Translational
Research
Dr. Wang grew up in an industrial city where
there was much emphasis on machinery.
Being born and raised in this environment, it
was natural for him to have a deep interest in
figuring out how and why machines worked
the way they did. When medicine was
introduced to him later in life, he applied his
interest in machinery and grew a curiosity
to discover how the human body works
and what causes disease. Today, Dr. Wang
believes that parts of the human body work
together to form a beautiful machine that is
far more complicated than anything humans
have created or even imagined. He works
toward the goal of conducting effective
and successful laboratory discoveries and
translating them into clinical practice for
improving patient outcome.

There are 800 Feinstein Institute investigators and staff who conduct
research in immunology, inflammation, neurology, obstetrics/
gynecology, oncology, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, urology,
genetics and many other specialties. These scientists collaborate
with nearly 10,000 physicians across the North Shore-LIJ Health
System. Together, they touch the lives of millions of patients each
year in the health system’s 19 hospitals, more than 400 outpatient
physician practices and a vast network of skilled-nursing home
care rehabilitation facilities. The health system’s 2,200-square-mile
footprint throughout the New York metropolitan area includes some
of the most ethnically-diverse communities in the US, providing an
immense opportunity for clinical research faculty and staff who recruit
more than 15,000 subjects per year into more than 2,100 studies.
Feinstein Institute investigators are internationally-acclaimed
authorities in their scientific and medical fields. They win prestigious
awards, belong to exclusive scientific and medical honor societies, and
are invited worldwide to lecture about their research. Their discoveries
are published in the most prestigious scientific and medical journals.

organic compounds and
potential drugs.
Dr. Aranow specializes in lupus
and rheumatoid arthritis.
She is the clinical director
of the Feinstein Institute
Center for Clinical Research
in Autoimmune Disease and
co-director of the Clinical
Trials Unit. She conducts
studies to better understand
and develop treatments for
diseases such as lupus and
rheumatoid arthritis.
Dr. Blanc’s research focuses on
developmental erythropoiesis
and its impairment in
pathological conditions and
why genetic disorders in
erythroid development trigger
a cancer predisposition in
children, notably osteogenic

The focus of Dr. Bloom’s

Recurrent respiratory
papillomatosis (RRP) is a
disease caused by the human
papillomavirus (HPV)—it is
the recurrence of tumors of
the upper airway that can
lead to airway blockages and
suffocation. Dr. Bonagura
studies the immune response
to HPV to understand why
RRP patients do not produce
the needed immune response
to prevent or control the virus.
Dr. Boockvar’s research
interests focus on malignant
brain tumor formation,
treatment and ways to
overcome resistance to
therapy. In addition to his
basic science interests, he
currently conducts multiple
clinical trials using bloodbrain barrier disruption
to deliver high-dose
chemotherapy for patients
with malignant brain tumors.
Dr. Brenner’s research goal
is to discover and develop
better treatments for
patients with autoimmune
and inflammatory diseases.

Dr. Chahine’s research
focuses on degeneration
and regeneration of
musculoskeletal tissues,
particularly intervertebral
disc, articular cartilage and
tendonous tissues. Her lab
uses tools of bioengineering,
cellular and molecular biology
and animal physiology to
develop new treatment
strategies for repairing
arthritic and diseased
musculoskeletal tissues.
The major focus of Dr.
Chavan’s research is in
bioelectronic medicine,
and developing knowledge
about the neuroanatomical
pathways and neural codes in
the vagus nerve that underlie
its regulation of the immune
response. She also works to
develop targeted therapeutics
for the treatment of longterm effects of inflammatory
diseases.
Dr. Chiorazzi studies the
activation and maturation
of B-lymphocytes, and uses
this information to develop
and test new diagnostics
and treatments for patients
suffering from chronic
lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a
B-lymphocyte cancer residing
in the blood, bone marrow
and lymphoid tissues. His
studies have impacted CLL
patient prognosis and care.
Dr. Chu’s research interests
are currently focused on

basis for the development of
B cell chronic lymphocytic
leukemia (CLL). More broadly,

Dr. Eidelberg directs an
imaging research program in
brain disease. His program

and fMRI. This approach has
provided unique insights
into Parkinson’s disease and
related movement disorders.
Dr. Elkis-Abuhoff’s research
interests bring together
behavioral medicine and
creative/medical art therapy
with neuroscience. Her recent
research projects connect art
therapy with those diagnosed
with Parkinson’s disease,
cancer and connecting
the creative process to
neurological responses.
Dr. Feigin directs the
Laboratory of Experimental
Therapeutics for Movement
Disorders, which conducts
clinical trials of new therapies
for Parkinson’s disease,

more efficacious and bettertargeted therapies.
Dr. Gallego’s current research
focus is on the role of
microRNAs in cerebrospinal
fluid and peripheral blood in
patients with schizophrenia.
Additionally, he is conducting
a study using induced
pluripotent stem cells
derived from first-episode
psychosis patients.
Dr. Ghorayeb’s research
includes diagnostic and
therapeutic ultrasound in
orthopaedics, dentistry,
ophthalmology, urology and
obstetrics and gynecology.
Projects include assessment
of osteoporosis; dental
pulp stem cells; penile,
testicular and cervical tissue

her studies address how
increased inflammation may
affect neurodevelopment.
Dr. Pavlov’s research focuses
on the regulation of immune
function and inflammation
by the nervous system. He
studies the role of brain and
peripheral neuronal pathways
in controlling cytokine
responses and inflammation,
and the therapeutic efficacy
of cholinergic modalities

Autoimmune &
Dr. Santiago-Schwarz’s
research is concerned with
the control of monocyte and
dendritic cell development
in normal and abnormal
physiology as well as
developing new therapeutic
agents for autoimmune
diseases. Current work
focuses on disrupted cytokine

networks affecting monocyte/
dendritic cell activity,

neonatal nutrition and critical

newborns. His nutritional and
anti-inflammatory studies aim
to provide better outcomes

Dr. Schleien researches
cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, including
brain-blood flow, drug effects,
metabolism and mechanics
of CPR. Recently, his focus
has been in pediatric CPR
and hypothermia following
cardiac arrest in children. He
also has an interest in clinical
bioethics in children, as well
as other critical care topics.
Dr. Schulder investigates
new methods of image
guidance for neurosurgery,
including the incorporation
of functional MRI as well as
intraoperative MRI.
Dr. Shafritz’s research
examines the neural and
cognitive mechanisms of
attention, executive function
and emotion. He also studies
psychological disorders
that involve dysregulation
of these processes, such as
autism and attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder. He
works to determine the brain
mechanisms underlying
behavioral disorders so that
future treatments can target
those specific brain areas.

Dr. Sherry’s research interest
is in the mechanisms that
coordinate the innate immune
response. Her ultimate goal is
to gain a better understanding
of the molecular mechanisms
that regulate chemokine
and chemokine receptor
responses in healthy
individuals, and to identify
how these pathways are
dysregulated in sepsis,
HIV infection and chronic
lymphocytic leukemia.
Dr. Silverman researches
pre-diabetes and diabetes in
emergency room patients,
as well as the effects of air
pollution on asthma-related
hospital admissions. He also
studies air pollution and
cardiac deaths that occur
outside of the hospital.

Dr. Simpkins uses si/sh RNA
knockdown techniques
to study the molecular
mechanisms of cisplatin
resistance that develops in
tumor cells. He is studying
his area of medicine to
create safer, more effective
chemotherapies.

Dr. Singh is focused on
elucidating the pathways
responsible for the cancer
predisposition in patients
with bone marrow failure
syndromes. A recent research
focus is on determining the

Dr. Singhal’s research is
focused on studying the
mechanism of the progression
of renal lesions in patients
with HIV-associated
nephropathy (HIVAN), a
complication of AIDS. He also
studies the effects of opiates
and ethanol on T cell injury.
Dr. Soffer studies mechanisms
of metastasis and resistance
to anti-angiogenic therapies in
pediatric soft tissue sarcomas.
The goal is to prevent micrometastatic disease following
tumor resection in a host
of pediatric solid tumors.
The research focus of Dr.
Son is on a pathogenic
pathway in lupus; specifically
the fundamental tolerance
role of complement C1q in
immune system. She studies
the function of LAIR-1 and
manipulating C1q and LAIR1 for down-regulation of
myeloid cells to improve the
severity of lupus.
Dr. Steinberg’s research is
primarily focused on diseases
of the airway caused by
human papillomaviruses
(HPVs). One of these diseases
is recurrent respiratory
papillomatosis (RRP). She also
studies HPV-induced head
and neck cancers.

Dr. Symons has focused his
research on the molecular
dissection of signaling
pathways that are responsible
for tumor cell invasion
and survival, with current
emphasis on brain tumors.
The research focuses on
two types of malignant
tumors: glioblastoma and
medulloblastoma.
Dr. Szeszko uses MRI to
study the brains of patients
who suffer from psychiatric
disorders in order to identify
structural and functional
abnormalities that play a
role in the pathogenesis
of disorders including
schizophrenia, bipolar
disorder and obsessivecompulsive disorder. He
also identifies neuroimaging
predictors of treatment
response and outcome.

Dr. Tracey’s research
focus is inflammation,
the physiological and
immunological response to
infection and injury and the
mechanism by which neurons
control the immune system.
Most recently, he has made
discoveries in bioelectronic
medicine. Bioelectronic
medicine tells nerves to
produce the natural chemicals
the body uses to cure itself.

Dr. Ulug is experienced in

MRI, such as functional MRI
(fMRI) and MR spectroscopic
imaging (MRSI). His research

Dr. Vaiselbuh specializes in
histiocytic disorders, pediatric
leukemia and lymphoma and
her research focuses on stem
cell niche biology and the
tumor microenvironment.
Dr. Vambutas’s research
interests are in the restoration
of natural hearing in patients
with immune-mediated
hearing loss who are resistant
to conventional corticosteroid
therapy. She is currently
studying how to prevent
further hearing loss and
identify new biologic markers
in these patients.
Dr. Vlachos’s research focuses
on inherited bone marrow
failure syndromes, particularly
Diamond Blackfan anemia
(DBA). Her goal is to better
understand the epidemiology
and biology of this red cell
disorder, and ultimately
discover better diagnostic and
treatment options.

Dr. Volpe studies recovery
after neurological injury with
non-invasive technology
including interactive robot
training and transcranial
direct current stimulation
(tDCS). His group is also
exploring the effect of
repetitive trans-cranial
magnetic stimulation (rTMS)
on brain metabolism using
PET technology.
The intent of Dr. Wang’s
research is to uncover the
mechanisms underlying the
pathogenesis of inflammatory
diseases, including cerebral
ischemic injury and sepsis. He
is working to identify novel
therapeutic targets to fight
against severe injury- and
infection-elicited dysregulated
inflammation.
Dr. Wang’s research goal is
to develop better therapies
to prevent septic onset and
progression. He and his team
members are studying several
potential drug candidates for
the treatment of sepsis and
other organ injuries including
hemorrhagic shock, acute
kidney injury, ischemiareperfusion injury, stroke and
radiation injury.
Dr. Yang studies the immune
system and diseases caused
by inflammation, with a focus
on sepsis. Specifically, she
studies the molecular basis
of sepsis in order to develop
an improved treatment
for sepsis.

Dr. Zou studies hematopoietic

conditions. Another current
focus is on how inflammatory
factors affect the bone
morrow microenvironment
and differentiation of stromal
cells in lymphoid organs in
autoimmune diseases.
