Our Lady of Good Counsel parish is a ROMAN
CATHOLIC, MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY guided by
the AUGUSTINIAN tradition.
Through our CELEBRATION of the WORD and
SACRAMENT, and our PARTICIPATION in the LIFE OF
THE CHURCH, we strive to

In Matthew’s account of Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:13-17), Jesus simply
appears as one of the crowd who was given “a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins.” Only after the baptism, while Jesus is in prayer,
does the Spirit appear as a dove and the voice of God sound out from the
sky.
Many people ask why Jesus came for baptism since he was without sin.
Ritual cleansing was a regular part of Jewish practice before the Sabbath,
after periods of uncleanness, and in preparation for great battles. John’s
baptism was a specific call to turn away from wrongdoing and turn toward
God. So persuasive was his preaching that many of his followers wondered
if he was the Messiah. He quickly corrects that idea. As we hear today, his
is a baptism of water only. The Anointed One will baptize with the Spirit and
fire — a sign of God’s judgment for all. When He is baptized by John, Jesus
acknowledges John’s authority as a man of God, and also Jesus participates in a public sign of His absolute obedience and reliance on God. The
words that are heard from the heavens are similar to Isaiah 42:1 (“my servant . . . my chosen . . . soul delights”), and they express Matthew’s understanding that this is the beginning of the messianic era.

Revelación del Amado
En el relato de Mateo (Mateo 3:13-17), Jesús parece ser uno más de la multitud que
recibe el Bautismo “para obtener el perdón de los pecados”. Recién después del
Bautismo, mientras Jesús está en oración, aparece el Espíritu en forma de paloma y
del cielo viene la voz de Dios.
Mucha gente pregunta por qué Jesús, que no tenía pecados, recibió el Bautismo. La
limpieza ritual formaba parte de las prácticas judías antes del Sábado, después de
períodos de impureza y para prepararse para batallas importantes. El Bautismo de
Juan era un llamado especial a alejarse del mal y acercarse a Dios. Su prédica era
tan convincente que muchos de sus seguidores se preguntaban si él era el Mesías.
Pero Juan rápidamente declara que él bautiza con agua. El Ungido, en cambio, bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y el fuego, que significa que Dios nos juzgará a todos.
Cuando Jesús es bautizado por Juan, Jesús reconoce la autoridad de Juan como
hombre de Dios y también da una señal pública de su obediencia y confianza incondicionales en Dios. Las palabras que vienen del cielo se asemejan a las de Isaías

Christmas Wreaths & Trees
We would like to thank the individuals and
families that participated in our second Christmas wreath and tree program. The wreaths in the church
and the lit trees on the plaza and the parking lot certainly
enhanced our lovely Christmas decorations. Again, Our
gratitude to all and everyone for the overwhelming support.
We will publish a list of donors in the near future.

We have received $42,000 in the Christmas
collection as of December 31st. The Christmas offering of our parishioners is an important source of
support for our parish. We count on your gift to help with
our ongoing expenses and to help with the winter heat and
utilities and with other expenses which come due at this

several choirs from Staten Island churches.
The evening begins at 7 PM with a time of
singing hymns and praise led by the Lamb of
God Music Ministry.

AUGUSTINIAN VOLUNTEER
PROGRAM
For those of you not familiar with the program, we are
the lay volunteer program sponsored by the St. Thomas
of Villanova Province and supported by Augustinian
communities across the country. Augustinian Volunteers are Catholic men and women between the ages of
21-29 who wish to serve God’s people in partnership
with the Augustinian Order and others. The service of
the volunteers is with established educational, social,
and health programs and varies according to the needs
of the sponsoring site and the individual volunteer. Applications are currently being accepted for the 20152016 volunteer year for our sites in Chicago, IL, Lawrence, MA, Philadelphia, PA, San Diego, CA, Ventura,
