ADULT CONFIRMATION
Registration is now open for adults (19 and older) who
wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in April,

WELCOME HOME SESSIONS
Do you know someone who has drifted away or has left
the Church? Our Welcome Home ministry offers six
weekly sessions to help people feel comfortable making
the transition back to the Church. Take a blue invitation
card from the pews and offer someone you know a gentle
invitation to come and get their questions answered and
to find out what the Catholic Church is about today. We
begin on Monday, January 12 at 7:15 PM in the Parish
Center, room 3&4. For more information contact Paula

BIBLE STUDY IN THE NEW YEAR
The book of Isaiah is among the world’s greatest works of
religious literature. In this 13 week study, Israel’s
prophets will challenge you to a greater holiness and
compassion. You may register for sessions held on
Sunday mornings, (Jan 4-March 29), Tuesday evenings,
(Jan 6-March 31), or Wednesday mornings (Jan 7-April
1). Registration forms are available on the parish website,
in the pamphlet rack in the rear of the church and in the
Parish Center office.

Pastor’s Column
“I wish to know Christ and the power flowing
from his resurrection…I am racing to the prize if
possible since I have been grasped by Christ
Jesus.” (Philippians 3:10-12)
Each day we have countless opportunities
to know Christ. Certainly our prayer life is the
foundation of our relationship with him. From a
quickly worded morning prayer before heading off
for a busy day, to time in church with Scripture, to
our Sunday Eucharist, our faith in God is nourished
by our prayer. It is in prayer that God shares with
us his message of salvation. God always hears our
prayers, regardless of the busy pace of our lives.
We, on the other hand, need to quiet ourselves
intentionally in order to hear his voice, that ‘quiet,
whispering sound’ that Elijah heard on the sacred
mountain.
As we reflect during this Christmas season
on the beginning of Jesus’ earthly journey, we do
so through his power of his resurrection as St. Paul
reminds us. It begins with his incarnation, God
becoming a human being and sharing with us his
grace. It is the power of his miracles and
teachings, transforming our lives into lives of
worship to him, and of service toward one another.
It is the power of his death and resurrection, inviting
us to follow him into the light of eternal glory.
In our race to grasp this prize, it is essential
for us to sustain our energy through prayer. Our
liturgical prayer strengthens us with the Eucharist,
the Bread of Life, and supports us through our
assembly gathering as brothers and sisters in
Christ. Our personal prayer provides the individual
attention that we need to give to God in our spiritual
journey. God can and will speak to us whenever he
wants. We must turn away from the distractions of
our lives in order to hear his voice. May we take
the time—and indeed make the time—to be
grasped by Christ Jesus and to hear the voice of
God.

THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH
SIMEON SAYS
Luke tells us today that Simeon awaited the
consolation of Jerusalem. This places him in line with his
prophetic ancestor Isaiah, for the scripture uses the very
same word for Simeon’s consoling that Isaiah used several
weeks ago when he prayed, “Comfort, give comfort to my
people” (Isaiah 40:1). Like Isaiah, Simeon was acting under
the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Luke emphasizes this by
stating it three times. While Isaiah was looking for the
geographic return of Israel from its Babylonian exile to
Jerusalem, Simeon was looking for the Christ (the anointed
one, the Messiah of God) to end forever the exile, the
estrangement, between God and humanity. And it is this
exile he sees ended when he stands in the outer Temple
courts with the Holy Family (Mary, a woman, would not have
been permitted in the Temple proper) and sings his song of Israel’s consolation, the song of his own
departure now at hand with Israel’s glory.
A TURNING POINT
Those who work with the elderly know that many people reach a point at which life and death become
somewhat interchangeable. Each is as desirable and beautiful as the other. This is part of the wisdom of the
elderly. Their experience and understanding of the blessings and the harshness of life permeate Simeon’s
prayer and his rather dire predictions to Mary today. The canticle Simeon offers is an expression of his
standing at the gate of his dismissal from this life to another. This is a reality he has reached because the
anointed one of God has been shown to him. We, too, and all those who truly know the promise held in
Christ, can confidently come to the same place. Through the grace of the Incarnation, our life on earth, with
all its trouble, heartaches, and sorrows, is blessed and beautiful; through the power of the Passion, death,
and Resurrection our next life is our most longed‑for hope. Only in Christ is this possible.

Free introductory session offered for women and couples
to learn about the Creighton Model System of natural
family planning. Women or couples wishing to enter the
program are then scheduled for individual follow-ups to

Conference at St. Joseph Church places envelopes in
church for your very generous contributions. We are most
appreciative of your donations of clean, usable items of
clothing. Due to the lack of space, we are not able to
distribute TV’s computers, or other pieces of furniture. It is
through your donations of clothing and money that we are
able to feed and clothe over 800 people monthly. God

Reflecting on God’s Word
On Christmas we celebrate God becoming human, when the face of creation was changed. We ponder
that great mystery of the Incarnation: Jesus is true God
and truly human. The divine has entered into communion
with the human in the body and soul of Jesus of Nazareth.
Christmas is not a single day, however, but an
entire season. Today, the Sunday after Christmas, we
ponder the Holy Family. What difference does this mystery of the Incarnation make for families? Jesus came to
bring together the children of Israel into a new family, a
family united not by blood but by faith in him. So in today’s Gospel we see some of the first members of that
family.
Luke’s Gospel has been called the Gospel of Jesus as the compassion of God, the Gospel of prayer, the
Gospel of the Holy Spirit; we can also think of it as the
Gospel of family. He first introduces us to Mary’s cousin,
Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s husband, Zechariah, parents of
John the Baptist. Then we meet Mary and Joseph.
Today we meet two other family members,
Simeon and Anna, not related by blood, but only by faith
in the promises of the God of Israel. Each sees in the
child Jesus the glory of Israel and the light for the Gentiles.
Christmas reminds us that by baptism into Christ
we are now part of God’s family. As God’s family, “God’s
chosen ones,” as Paul reminded the Colossians (3:62),
we are to put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another.

Palabra de Dios
En la Navidad celebramos que Dios se hizo hombre y así el rostro de la creación cambió. Reflexionamos
en ese gran misterio de la encarnación: Jesús es verdadero Dios y verdaderamente hombre. La divinidad ha entrado en comunión con la humanidad en el cuerpo y el
alma de Jesús de Nazaret.
Pero la Navidad no es un solo día, sino todo un
tiempo del año. Hoy, en este domingo después de Navidad, reflexionamos sobre la Sagrada Familia. ¿Qué diferencia hace este misterio de la encarnación en las familias? Jesús vino para reunir a los hijos de Israel en una
familia nueva, una familia unida no por sangre sino por la
fe en Dios. Así es que en el Evangelio de hoy vemos a
algunos de los primeros miembros de esa familia.
Al Evangelio de Lucas se le ha llamado el Evangelio de Jesús, que es la compasión de Dios, el Evangelio de la oración, el Evangelio del Espíritu Santo, y también podemos verlo como el Evangelio de la familia. Lucas nos presenta primero a Isabel, la prima de María y al
esposo de Isabel, Zacarías, los padres de Juan el Bautista. Luego conocemos a María y a José.
Hoy conocemos a otros dos miembros de la familia, Simeón y Ana, que no son consanguíneos, sino más
bien parientes por la fe en las promesas del Dios de Israel. Ambos ven en el Niño Jesús la gloria de Israel y la luz
para los paganos.
La Navidad nos recuerda que al ser bautizados
en Cristo pertenecemos a la familia de Dios. Como
“elegidos de Dios”, como les recuerda Pablo a los colosenses (3:12), debemos revestirnos de compasión, de
bondad, de mansedumbre y de paciencia, soportándonos
mutuamente y perdonándonos los unos a los otros.

LA SAGRADA FAMILIA DE JESÚS, JOSÉ Y MARIA
SIMEÓN DICE
Lucas nos dice hoy que Simeón esperaba la
consolación de Jerusalén. Eso lo coloca en línea con su
ancestro profético Isaías, porque la Sagrada Escritura usa
para la consolación de Simeón, la misma palabra que
Isaías usó hace unas semanas cuando oró, “Consuelo, da
consuelo a mi pueblo”. Como Isaías, Simeón actuaba bajo
la guía del Espíritu Santo y Lucas lo enfatiza diciéndolo
tres veces. Mientras Isaías esperaba el retorno de Israel
desde su exilio en Babilonia a Jerusalén, Simeón esperaba
al Cristo (el ungido, el Mesías de Dios) para terminar por
siempre el exilio, la separación, entre Dios y la humanidad.
Y es este exilio el que él ve terminar cuando está en la
corte exterior del Templo con la sagrada familia (María, una
mujer, no habría sido admitida dentro del propio Templo) y
canta su canto de consuelo para Israel, el canto de su propia partida ahora que ha llegado la gloria de Israel.
UN PUNTO DECISIVO
Quienes trabajan con ancianos saben que muchas personas llegan a un punto en el que la vida y la muerte
son intercambiables. La una es tan hermosa y deseable como la otra. Esa es parte de la sabiduría de la
ancianidad. Su experiencia y comprensión de las bendiciones y los sufrimientos de la vida llenan la oración
de Simeón y sus atrevidas predicciones a María hoy. El cántico de Simeón es una expresión de su situación
al acercarse su partida de esta vida a la otra. Ésta es una realidad que ha comprendido porque el ungido de
Dios se la ha revelado. Nosotros también, y todos aquellos que realmente conocen la promesa que Cristo
encierra, podemos confiadamente llegar a ese mismo lugar. Por la gracia de la Encarnación, nuestra vida en
la tierra, con todos sus problemas, dolores y sufrimientos, es bendita y bella; por el poder de la pasión,
muerte, y resurrección, nuestra próxima vida es nuestra más ardiente esperanza. Sólo en Cristo esto es
posible.

PENSAMIENTOS DE GENEROSIDAD
Primera lectura — ¡Levántate y brilla, Jerusalén! La gloria del Señor amaneció sobre ti (Isaías 60:1-6).

Segunda lectura — El misterio de que los gentiles son
coherederos, socios en la promesa en Jesucristo, se ha

Evangelio — Magos del oriente llegaron, diciendo:
“¿Dónde está el rey de los judíos que ha nacido?”
(Mateo 2:1-12).
“…Como Cristo los perdonó, así también háganlo
ustedes.” - Colosenses 3:13
El perdón - una de las cosas más difíciles de hacer. Es
increíble en tiempo que podemos pasar con rencor o rabia contra alguien. Mientras celebramos el festín de la
Santa Familia, tome esta oportunidad para dar el don del
perdón a alguien - talvez a alguien de su familia, talvez
un amigo o un colega o vecino, o talvez a usted mismo.

“Quiero conocerlo, quiero probar el poder de su
resurrección... prosigo mi carrera para
conquístala, como yo ya he sido conquistado
por Cristo.” (Filipenses 3:10-12)
Cada día tenemos un sinnúmero de
oportunidades de conocer a Cristo. Ciertamente
nuestra vida de oración es la base de nuestra
relación con él. Desde una oración de la mañana
redactado rápidamente antes de salir para un día
de trabajo, a tiempo en la iglesia con la Escritura, a
nuestra Eucaristía dominical, nuestra fe en Dios se
nutre de nuestra oración. Es en la oración que Dios
comparte con nosotros su mensaje de salvación.
Dios siempre escucha nuestras oraciones,
independientemente del ritmo de trabajo de
nuestras vidas. Nosotros, por el contrario, tenemos
que acallar a nosotros mismos intencionalmente
con el fin de escuchar su voz, que "tranquila,
susurrando sonido 'que oyó Elías en la montaña
sagrada.
Al reflexionar durante esta temporada de
Navidad en el comienzo del camino terrenal de
Jesús, lo hacemos a través de su poder de su
resurrección como St. Paul nos recuerda.
Comienza con su encarnación, Dios se hizo un ser
humano y compartir con nosotros su gracia. Es el
poder de sus milagros y enseñanzas, la
transformación de nuestras vidas en la vida de
adoración a él, y de servicio hacia los demás. Es el
poder de su muerte y resurrección, que nos invita a
seguirlo en la luz de la gloria eterna.
En nuestra carrera por captar este premio,
que es esencial para nosotros mantener nuestra
energía a través de la oración. Nuestra oración
litúrgica nos fortalece con la Eucaristía, el Pan de
Vida, y nos apoya a través de nuestra reunión de
montaje como hermanos y hermanas en Cristo.
Nuestra oración personal ofrece la atención
individual que tenemos que dar a Dios en nuestro
camino espiritual. Dios puede y va a hablar con
nosotros cuando quiera. Debemos alejarnos de las
distracciones de la vida con el fin de escuchar su
voz. Podemos tomar el tiempo-y de hecho hacer
que aferrarse por Cristo Jesús, el que tiempo y
escuchar la voz de Dios.
