It was a brisk top-down day for the Annual Chicken Run to Olpe. We met at McDonald’s. With a roar, we’re off for Olpe! Making the turn at McDonalds is always an adventure with no right turn, but we made it without a ticket. It was great to drive through blue skies & lightly P age |4 smoky air that whetted your appetite in preparation for an endless lunch of excellent fried chicken & vittles. A perfect driving day! On the way, we passed through smoking fields from burn-off. I stopped off at that abandoned farm we’ve passed for years to shoot several skillfully welded steel sculptures left on display to the world in an empty landscape. Find the photos & my guess at captions on page 8. The highway vistas on the Chicken Run were spectacular as usual! There is NOTHING like looking DOWN into the distance of a roadway from atop the high edge of a Kansas canyon to make your spirit SOAR! We arrived in good time with only one stop to check water, but without incident. We got to P age |5 meet up with the Kansas City area car clubs and even spotted Cecil Wise nearby. Rod MacLean spoke briefly about events upcoming and thanked all for coming out to share the day. After the Meet, Eat & Greet, we all hit the parking lot to look over the iron. (I’m at a loss for names. My apologies to all.). P age |6 Some of the Kansas City Iron seemed to sit up downright pretty in the sunshine, so I took a couple shots for your convenience. Please note the shiny green Mini owned by Derek & Nikki (& Aeslin) Young who drove up for fun! P age |7 At bottom of long hill into Olpe, metal art appears. My guess on titles? 1 thru 5: Farm Yard Chicken, Windblown Wheat, Windmill, Field Water Pump, and, Kid On Barrel Saddle On Tree Ropes. 1 2 5 3 4 P age |8 The Race Car Race : Prime, Sand, Repeat…… Hank Brillhart has laid down some primer, sanded it, reshot the thin spots, sanded it again. Late Developments From Rod Progress on my Austin-Healey restoration. I have completed much of the engine compartment work with wiring and cabin cooling. As you can see from the photo below I have made good progress getting all the detail work done to accept the mounting of the engine. I am moving my attention to the cabin and the trunk now to complete those areas under the dash in the cabin and mounting the fuel tank in the trunk. Rod MacLean (More to come on restoration of Rod’s AH 3000!) Rat Patrol Report: Right now, he’s in the middle of laying down some POR 15, a really heavy black paint that puts a tough, hard, protective coat on the metal. This sort of stuff is not compatible with a spray gun; this goes on with a brush. If it gets on you, no problem: it should wear off in about a month….maybe. When I dropped by, Hank was fixin’ to start coating the doors and loose panels. More to come! Lookin’ good, Hank. P age |9 2016 Schedule Mark and I double-checked 2016 schedules for 24 Hour LeMons, ChumpCar & World Racing League. Based on the amount of work the car still needs, here is our 2016 schedule. World Racing League Raceway Park of the Midlands. (Just outside of Omaha) 10 hour race July 23rd and 6-hour race July 24th. ChumpCar Motorsports Park Hastings (Neb) 12 hour race Sept 10th and 6-hour race Sept 11th. World Racing League Hallett Motor Race Circuit (OK) 9 hr race Oct 22, 7-hr race Oct 23. To ensure adequate seat time for all drivers, we are limiting seats to five drivers per race weekend (that's Mark, me and three others). What does it take to participate in this lunacy? Besides being a bit crazy, it takes a long weekend, a bit of cash and some safety gear. With one or two paying drivers, it is $750 per race weekend and a share of the gas (usually about $80). With a full complement of five drivers, the cost is $700 per weekend, and no gas charge. If you have no safety equipment, you will need to purchase a helmet (see Chumpcar & WRL websites for information on approved helmets). We can loan you about everything else. TO LOCK IN A SEAT TO DRIVE THE RAT: 1. Call Harry 316-776-0065 / Mark 785-234-2005. 2. After call, mail $250 deposit to hold the seat. It will be reserved upon receipt of deposit. 3. Send an add’l $250 30 days prior to race date. 4. Balance due on race day. Yeah, I know. It's not cheap. But it's the most fun you can have without getting naked. And we can't help you out there.
