ANNUAL REPORT
OUR WORK
At St. Patrick Center, we’re one of
Missouri’s largest providers of housing,
employment and health opportunities
for people who are homeless or at risk
of becoming homeless. We take an
action-based approach to service and
offer nationally recognized programs
that assist more than 8,000 people
each year.
Our mission, at its core, is to help
individuals and families move from
homelessness to independence in
dignified, cost-effective and permanent
ways. This approach transforms our
clients as well as our entire community.

ANNUAL REPORT
Letter from the Chief Executive Officer
Tom Etling
Chief Executive Officer
“The backbone of
St. Patrick Center
has, and always will
be, our volunteers.”
Thanks to the tremendous generosity of
the St. Louis community, FY2013 was an
unprecedented year for St. Patrick Center.
We continue to understand who our core clients
are and how to better serve them, and we are
facilitating a much richer conversation with the
region about all of the partners and services
needed to help people who are homeless or
at-risk of becoming homeless.
The backbone of St. Patrick Center has, and
always will be, our volunteers. Each year, more
than 4,000 people walk through our doors to
lend a hand to our clients. We will need the
strength and support of our volunteers even

more in the future and we value the care and
compassion that you have for St. Patrick Center.
The challenges with funding, especially the
variability in government resources, will provide
an even greater opportunity to reach out to the
local community.
We appreciate the amazing efforts of our staff,
Board of Directors, Board of Trustees and Young
Friends Development Board, who live our mission
every day. We will continue to build off the
blueprint from this fiscal year as we move into
an even brighter future for St. Patrick Center
and our clients. We have many milestones to
celebrate in the coming year, including the
opening of the new McMurphy’s in 2014 and
the 30th anniversary of the Irish Open.
Please continue to pray for our clients as they
work so hard to improve their lives through
St. Patrick Center. We will continue to be
consistent and transparent stewards of the
community’s resources and give a critical voice
to people who deserve an opportunity to give
themselves and their families a better tomorrow.

Letter from the Board President
Jim Kavanaugh
President, Board
of Directors, FY2013
“When people are
ready to change their
lives, St. Patrick Center
continues to be at the
center of that change.”
When people are ready to change their lives,
St. Patrick Center continues to be at the center
of that change. We thank all of the donors,
volunteers, board members and staff for your
dedication and support over the last 30 years.
We are happy to report that we reversed a
two-year deficit this fiscal year. We thank the
St. Patrick Center leadership and staff who
worked hard to efficiently manage the
organization while continuing to operate critical
programs that serve more than 8,000 individuals
and their families, in an environment in which
traditional funding sources, such as government
grants, have diminished.
opportunities for people who are homeless, or
at risk of becoming homeless, to be successful.
We will continue to develop new ideas for
quality, effective programs and partnerships.
St. Patrick Center needs reliable, sustainable
funding because the need for programs and
services continues to rise. We will continue to
build our reserves and rely on the generosity
of you, our donors, so we can help people for
many years to come.
This year, the primary focus will again be on
our programs and how they all work together
to provide people with opportunities for safe
and affordable housing, sound mental and
physical health, and employment and financial
stability. Community collaborations will continue
as well, as they are vital to St. Patrick Center’s
sustainability and our clients’ success.
Thank you for your passion for this great
organization that has an important responsibility
to help make St. Louis a better place! This financial recovery was possible through an
energized focus on our clients and the three
core areas providing them with programs and
services: housing, employment and health.

St. Patrick Center Operating Revenue & Expenses
for Fiscal Year 2013
Chris Wood
Chief Financial Officer
“In FY2013, 89% of funds
raised by St. Patrick Center
directly supported client
programs and services.”
In FY2013, St. Patrick Center continued to be
challenged by the slow growth of the economy
and high unemployment. Despite the
slow economy, donations from
individual and corporate
donors increased from
FY2012. Government grants
remained strong, however,
they have begun to show
signs of volatility.
Through your generosity and close monitoring of
expenses, St. Patrick Center ended FY2013 with
positive results from operations for the first time
in three years. In addition to positive operating
results, the St. Patrick Center endowment fund
received gifts that increased the fund by 20%.
These endowment gifts will generate income to
support St. Patrick Center’s future operations.
In FY2013, 89% of funds raised by St. Patrick Center
directly supported client programs and
services, while administrative and fundraising
costs were 11%.

Jim, Supportive Services
for Veteran Families
“The great and friendly
people at St. Patrick
Center gave me superb
assistance in getting out
of a short-term jam.”
In addition to helping people who are
homeless, St. Patrick Center also assists people
who are at risk of becoming homeless. Jim’s
success was made possible by our Supportive

“St. Patrick Center set me
on another course for my
life and I’ll never go back
to where I was before.”
When Patrick was released from prison and
living in a halfway house, people teased him
about going to St. Patrick Center for programs
and services. With a three-year Army career,
25-years in restaurant management and
five years clean, the St. Louis native says he

“The BEGIN New Venture
Center made it possible
for me to start my business
and make connections in
the community.”
The idea for a new business can spring from
a personal need and Ashley Nanney is living
proof that what worked for her can also help
others. She was very ill 14 years ago, in and
out of the hospital and 97 pounds overweight.
Her doctor told her she would die if something
didn’t change. Fueled by the desire to be
served our country in the Army Reserves in the
late 1960’s. After that, he had a long career as
a service technician with the 7UP company.
Recently, Jim lost his courier job when his car
broke down, leaving him with zero income,
depleted savings and several months behind
on rent. He came to St. Patrick Center and
case managers assisted him with rent, utilities,
transportation and food stamps. Before long,
Jim got a part-time job with the American
Association of Retired Persons, working on

knew St. Patrick Center was the place to go
to get help with housing, employment and
health. Patrick participated in several agency
programs, including Independent Living Skills,
Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program
and McMurphy’s Grill. “Transitioning from
prison to society and my family was really
hard and I came to St. Patrick Center with a
victim mentality,” Patrick recalls. “But then I
listened to the Lord, opened my mind and took
advantage of everything that was offered to
me, including budget classes, healthcare, legal
services and tax preparation.” Today, Patrick
is pursuing a degree in hotel and restaurant
management. His wife, eight children and two
grandchildren are all doing well.

learned about restoring her health through
nutrition and alternative medicine. She
was inspired to help others so she joined
St. Patrick Center’s BEGIN New Venture Center
and her company, Feed Your Vitality, was born.
Feed Your Vitality delivers healthy, delicious,
convenient meals throughout the St. Louis
area. Prepared in BEGIN’s culinary suite, all
meals are naturally free of the additives and
preservatives found in most commercially
prepared foods. “We don’t use gluten, corn,
dairy or artificial ingredients.” Feed Your Vitality
had a tremendous first year in business. It’s the
only diet meal delivery service of its kind in St.
Louis. Ashley’s current team includes two

departments share responsibilities for the
project. St. Patrick Center has also entered into
an agreement with another local developer to
be the lead referral agency for Freedom Place,
68 units of low-income housing for veterans
which will open in the summer of 2014.

Chief Operating Officer
“Fiscal Year 2013 was a
year of enrichment of
our existing programs
and controlled growth
in housing units.”
The entire agency, from board to staff to clients,
was involved in the year-long re-accreditation
process with the Council on Accreditation. The
awarding of the new four-year designation will
be announced in the fall of 2013.
On the housing front, our partnership with a
local developer enabled us to add 56 units of
supportive housing to our network. The St. Louis
Stamping Lofts (pictured below) on the
riverfront has 56 units of furnished studio
apartments built by LoftWorks using low
income housing tax credits. The developer is
the owner and management company and
we make referrals and provide case
management. Our housing and employment
The Veterans Administration renewed our
$1 million grant for another year for veterans
and families. Various other grants were awarded
for health programs that provided wellness
classes and the ability to add part-time
psychiatrists on-site in our Shamrock Club. We
expanded our Fast Track GED program and
28 students earned their GED during the year!
We transitioned our former McMurphy’s Grill in
December 2012 and are currently developing
a new site within our agency to open in the
spring of 2014. Additionally, we opened a second

Program Highlights
Rosati Apartments and Group Home
Rosati Apartments offer supportive housing to
clients with severe and persistent mental illness
in a minimally restrictive environment. Rosati
Group Home provides counseling, instruction in
daily living skills and 24-hour protective
oversight to clients with mental illness. Staff
provides meals, medication management and
items for daily living. The Rosati Assertive
Community Treatment program provides tools
for daily independent living, crisis intervention
and improvement in quality of life for
individuals who suffer from persistent mental
illness and/or substance abuse and meet
HUD’s definition of chronic homelessness. The
staff coaches clients in daily living activities to
help them maintain adequate housing and
self-fulfillment.
In fiscal year 2013:
•
•
We provided case management services and
housing for a year or more to 17 men and
women in our Rosati Apartments. In addition,
one resident graduated into an independent
apartment in the community.
We provided counseling, daily living skills
instruction and 24-hour protective oversight
to 23 clients in our Rosati Group Home. Of the
11 who were discharged, 3 moved into more
independent living quarters, and 3 with family
members, after acquiring daily living skills
and stability.
•
We provided permanent housing, mental
health and substance abuse counseling, and
employment and financial guidance services
to 16 Rosati Assertive Community Treatment
residents and up to 66 people, formerly
chronically homeless, living at other sites in
the community.
St. Louis Stamping Lofts/FarmWorks
St. Louis Stamping Lofts opened in February 2013
in an 1870’s landmark building on the near North
side with 56 affordable studio apartment units for
veterans, ex-offenders and others who are
struggling with homelessness. All residents
receive case management services from the
housing and employment teams to help them
maintain sobriety, meet mental and physical
health needs, find employment and search for
permanent housing. The lofts are part of a larger
planned development called FarmWorks. When
completed, FarmWorks will include a green business
incubator and urban farm. St. Patrick Center
provided 38 clients with housing and employment
case management services through this new
low-income housing project in fiscal year 2013.

For the last 30 years, St. Patrick Center has had
the opportunity to serve and help thousands of
individuals and families. This support would not
have been possible without the generosity
of our annual donors. We could not do
what we do without your support! For this,
the clients and staff of St. Patrick Center
thank you.

One the greatest rewards of being part of St. Patrick Center, beyond seeing
so many lives profoundly changed by our mission, is to be surrounded by
a magnitude of service. There are few places where you can interact and
associate yourself with so many caring, compassionate and dedicated
people. The more we grow our mission, the more love and service we are
blessed with!
This has been a year of change for me as I moved into a new position as the Associate
Executive Director to manage major projects for the agency. I’m working with staff and
a team of board members to launch a new McMurphy’s Grill on the ground floor of
St. Patrick Center in March 2014. We’re establishing a BEGIN board to help provide guidance
and oversight to our small business incubator program. We have partnered with Malta on
their prisoner ministry efforts.
I will continue to work with many donors I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the
years and also manage St. Patrick Center’s three tax credit programs. I’m excited about this
new role; I can’t imagine not being part of St. Patrick Center!
Together, we continue to serve people who are working through substantial obstacles to
improve their lives. Thank you! – Jan Rasmussen, Associate Executive Director

Cannon Design hosted Exhibit A: Art by Architects on April 18, 2013 in the
historic municipal Power House building located in downtown St. Louis. Our
event featured a unique silent auction that offered original signed drawings
and sketches donated by notable architects from around the world. For
the fifth annual event, Cannon Design chose St. Patrick Center as the
beneficiary, with focus on the veterans programs. Through the art auction,
ticket and merchandise sales, we were able to raise more than $20,000 to
support St. Patrick Center clients.
Cannon Design and its employees believe in helping the community where we live and
work and making St. Louis better. With our St. Louis office headquartered just a few blocks
from St. Patrick Center, choosing to support the mission of building permanent, positive
change in our community was an easy decision.
Cannon Design employees also support the agency by serving lunch monthly in the
Shamrock Club and sponsoring the annual St. Patrick’s Irish Open Dinner Auction & Golf
Tournament. We are dedicated to the mission of St. Patrick Center. – Michael Felton, Principal, Cannon Design and Board of Trustees member

I’m very proud to be a part of St. Patrick Center’s Young Friends Development
Board. I got involved because I strongly support the mission of St. Patrick Center.
I believe in the effectiveness of their holistic approach to tackling the challenges
of being homeless. I’m continually moved by their client success stories and the
positive change that this organization brings to the St. Louis region.
The Young Friends Development Board supports St. Patrick Center’s mission
of by fundraising and generating community awareness. In March 2013, we hosted the
7th annual St. Patrickís Irish Party at Schlafly Tap Room. We raised $7500, making it the most
successful Irish Party to date! These funds, as well as all initiatives taking on by the Young
Friends, continue to build permanent, positive change for St. Patrick Center clients. In August
2013, we held our newest fundraiser, Walk a Mile in Our Shoes (a 5K run/walk), at Tower Grove
Park. More than 500 people participanted and we plan to make this an annual event! We are always looking to recruit new young professionals to join the Young Friends
Development Board. If you are interested in learning more, please contact us at
[email protected].

Supportive Services for Veteran Families
St. Patrick Center provides the Supportive
Services for Veteran Families program,
developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans
Affairs (VA), providing services designed to
promote housing stability to very low-income
veteran families. Services include health care,
temporary financial assistance, transportation
services, legal services and child care services.
Employment staff offers weekly meetings to
promote housing stability, covering such topics
as being a good tenant, budgeting, setting
priorities, mental health awareness and making
decisions. St. Patrick Center worked with
227 veteran families, 396 people in all,
to prevent their homelessness in fiscal
year 2013. This included rapidly
rehousing 122 veteran families,
a total of 170 people.

Volunteer Spotlight
When spring break approaches, most students
decide to go home for quality time with family
or head to the beach with friends. For several
years, students from Gonzaga University
have instead chosen to travel to St. Louis and
volunteer at St. Patrick Center. In March 2013,
a group of 13 Gonzaga students once again
ventured to St. Louis to help people who are
homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
The group helped with many tasks throughout
the agency: serving lunch, assisting with
administrative duties and collecting donations
at three Pot O’ Gold sites. No matter what the
task, they eagerly stepped forward to help!
