Welcome to Feast 2013 and the many changes this
Feast brings. We have our new home, the ANZ Feast
Cluster in the Lion Arts Centre. This is where Feast
first began and it is great to be back. With its long
history of great events and entertainment, the Feast
ANZ Cluster will be a beacon of light during November
for our LGBTIQ community as we showcase our
work for all to see. In 2013 a huge proportion of the
program has been curated so that productions and
events interlink and weave the theme of the festival
Gender – mix it up! – offering style, humour, pathos
and discourse about gender and sexuality through
art. There is a cross-fertilisation of art forms and ideas to encourage debate and discussion
without losing the playfulness and fun that Feast is known for.
It is with great joy we welcome Beccy Cole as our Inaugural Feast Ambassador, to help
spread the word wherever she goes as a successful role model for our community nationwide.
Beccy is passionate about engaging regional LGBTIQ people as much as us and totally endorses our
Inaugural Queer Youth Regional Outreach and Exchange Project. This project will see
Feast engage with Regional Queer Youth prior to, during and after the festival event. It is hoped that
this is the beginning of a long engagement with our regional brothers and sisters.
For the first time we will present our big dance party BEDLAM, mixing it up with the best of the
best local, national and international DJs.
We bring back the Gala Ball for those of you who like to ‘trip the light fantastic’ and the Hills
Garden Tour as well as bring you Sea, River - See Port Adelaide Feast and other metro
Feast events as part of our movable Feast program. There is an expanded Feast Film Festival
featuring 20 films never seen in Adelaide before (7 of which are Australian premieres) plus 2 classics,
including Some Like it Hot which I think totally sums up Gender - Mix it Up! It also has one of
the best punch lines ever.
We welcome the Art Gallery of South Australia, The State Library, Musica Viva and
Zephyr Quartet as strategic partners helping add a touch of elegance and class to our festival.
Speaking of class, Beccy Cole will star in 2 very different shows, 3 if you count Barnyard
Cabaret with the irrepressible Libby O’Donovan. Michael Griffith’s IN VOGUEwinner of 5
star reviews at Edinburgh Festival this year will prove a winner as will the whole array of other spectacular
acts. Geoffrey Parslow has dished up yet another fabulous visual arts program including works from Di
Barrett, Raymond Zada, Ian Willding and The Transit Lounge exhibition to name a few.
Queer Ideas will feature forums, introductions and debates including Walk Like a Man and
QUEER&A – all things gender, facilitated by ABC Radio National host Fran Kelly and featuring an
exciting panel of speakers.
Don’t forget to pop by each night after work during the festival to enjoy a drink and live music at our
Sunset Soirees featuring our LGBTIQ local talent. That is just the entrée – check out the program
for the full banquet on offer.
I look forward to seeing you at Feast 2013 and hope that you will mix it up whilst mixing in.
Cheers

Messages of Support
Jay Weatherill, Premier
Stephen Yarwood, Lord Mayor
This year’s FEAST program provides a mixture of
discussions and forums that encourage critical
thinking about issues relating to sexual diversity,
without losing the sense of entertainment that
FEAST has become known for.
FEAST offers all South Australians the opportunity
to celebrate the diversity of our civilised, modern
society. FEAST draws upon our traditional love of the Arts to bring people
together in a spirit of inclusion.
This year’s theme, ‘Mix it Up’ will explore issues of gender, sexuality, power,
government and culture through a range of festive events and discussions.
I encourage all South Australians to participate in FEAST 2013 as an expression
of our solidarity in diversity.
Welcome to the City of Adelaide for the 2013 Feast
Festival, which carries the theme ‘Gender – Mix it up’.
As Lord Mayor I want to make Adelaide one of
the most inclusive, creative cities in the world. Not
only is this good for the gay community, it’s vital to
the competitiveness of our city. The Feast Festival
supports this goal absolutely.
This year I’m pleased to see the Feast Festival Hub located in the courtyard of the
Lion Arts Centre. This location is at the heart of the West End’s arts district and is
surrounded by high quality venues.
The Feast Festival encourages every sector of the community to share in a range
of artistic experiences. I hope you all get involved and enjoy everything on offer.
Your city loves you… enjoy the party!
Tony Piccolo,
Minister for Communities & Social Inclusion
Leon Bignell MP, Minister for Tourism
The South Australian Government is proud to
support Feast, Adelaide Queer Cultural Festival.
The 2013 event promises to be bigger and
better than ever, featuring a stunning program of
theatre, cabaret, film, dance, comedy, literature,
visual arts, music, community and sporting
events.
Based in a new home, the ‘The Feast ANZ Cluster’ includes venues such as
the Lion Arts Centre, Fowlers Live, Nexus Cabaret, the Mercury Cinema and
the University of South Australia.
Held in November, Feast is a stand-out event on Adelaide’s year-long cultural
and festival calendar which attracts international performers and visitors to
our vibrant city and regions.
With a huge array of performances on offer, I encourage everyone to get
involved and enjoy this truly diverse and exciting event.

The South Australian Government remains a supporter
of the Feast Festival. This festival is a major cultural
event for our state and a great way to acknowledge
and promote diversity and social inclusion.
This year, through the Department for Communities
and Social Inclusion, the Government has supported
two important Feast programs– a Regional Outreach Exchange Pilot Project and a
Queer Youth Space Project.
These programs are about supporting young people who identify as queer or same
sex attracted and their peers to engage in Feast Festival activities in a meaningful way
– regardless of whether they live in Adelaide’s CBD, the broader metropolitan area or
regional South Australia.
Through programs like this we can celebrate our community diversity and promote
acceptance regardless of a person’s sexual orientation.
Congratulations to the organisers of the 2013 Feast Festival, and I hope you enjoy the
great events on offer this year.

Port Road and the River Torrens and features beautiful trees, birdlife and great facilities.
The Picnic After Party will be held at the Feast ANZ Cluster (just a short tram or bus ride
away - or 15 minute walk from picnic). This will be your last chance to party at the Feast
ANZ Cluster before the festival ends. All the bars will be open and the music a pumpin’

“Same sex marriage – why bother?”
Why do same sex couples want to enter into a world where 1 in 3 is doomed
to fail? I mean how many toasters can a gal or guy have? Why not just save
the money? Is it about equality? Is it about wearing white and having buck’s
nights, honeymoons and three tiered cakes? Will we end up blended and
merged with our hetero brothers and sisters? Join some of the best queer
comedians and performers as they debate this exciting and tricky topic.
Featuring Geraldine Hickey, Nath Valvo, Lori Bell, Sally Goldner
with your MC Catherine Fitzgerald.

Between the Cracks
Barnyard Cabaret
Between the Cracks explores the private places and deepest holes of this multi award
winning diva, as she opens up and bares all. A bent night of blues, burlesque and
blame. Don’t miss Yana Alana in this intermittently intimate night of camp cabaret.
Sold out Melbourne Season.
“Whether you’re a long–term fan, or have never seen her perform. You’ll never regret seeing Yana
Alana, up-close and rather personal. She is a pure force of nature(a blue one, of course), full of wit,
a delightful lack of self-dignity, and laugh-out-loud moments’ Aussie Theatre Review.

Outrageous, intriguing and absolutely hysterical! Join veteran performers Vonni,
Rochelle & Fifi for a night of camp cabaret in a no lip-syncing – all live show.
Be taken on a journey to the world of feathers, sequins and camp, through song,
mystery sharing and very candid personal & show biz stories.
Think Liza Minnelli meets Edith Piaf in a lesbian bar. At age 7 Georgia knew
who she really was; at last at 47 she’s remembered! Throw in a chair fetish and
magical maestro Matthew Carey; this is riotous and fun-loving Cabaret. What good
is sitting all alone in your room when you can come and smell La Vie en Rose.

Lori Bell - One Naughty Night
When every other little boy idolised Nicky Winmar, Thomas Jaspers idolised
Nicky Buckley. How does a family of sports obsessed tradies cope with a ponce?
When does one get over the shame and embrace the queen within? And how
does dating a TV star solve all those problems? Join Jaspers for a camp romp
through a suburban childhood; the making of a bogan queen.
Stay up late and play the game! You tell her yours, she’ll tell you hers. One
Naughty Night aims to expose it all, in an evening of funny secrets and stories,
told and taken by Adelaide Comedy’s People’s Choice Champion for the past
2 years and long-time Feast favourite, Lori Bell. This will be an evening best
enjoyed with friends!

It is 1969 Tasmania. Guy Mason is in his first year of teaching and struggles to

Karen Cunningham
Light. Camera. Action.
A new and exciting body of work combining traditional format and circular canvases for
this vibrant and colourful collection of paintings. An exhibition with a feel for pop culture,
petri dishes and a little post colonialism thrown in as a reminder of the past and present.
My current practice focuses on the design and production of both blown glass objects
and objects that incorporate glass components with other materials. These range from
functional tableware to lighting and sculptural pieces. As a glass designer and maker
my work combines the design element with the hand made. It is not mass produced
but infused with the human touch, a merging of the design and artisan worlds.
Vix is a lightpainter. Yep, you read right. She paints pictures with light. Live. No
fancy computer software trickery, just an evening of instant photo-magic. The
team creates awe-inspiring images right before your eyes on the big screen, using
all in-camera techniques. Be transported to magical or humorous dreamscapes, or
put up your hand to join the team onstage: all you’ll need is imagination...
With elements of designs inspired from Wiradjuri culture these works are made to lift
your spirits and leave you enlightened with their whimsical titles and layered innuendo.

As an artist, my work is influenced heavily by facets of nature and
indigenous art styles and beliefs. I find inspiration within the natural
world, from the materials I use to the forms I create. My current
sculptural focus is animal motifs, undoubtedly due to the connection I
have had with them throughout my life.

Journey Textiles
A work that evolved through the cross generational connection with my
adoptive Great, Great Aunt from Australia and me as a little boy from
Thailand. I have created new crochet work that is entwined with vintage
pieces of hers. Forming three panels, they are designed to reflect on
memories and the bonding power of craft.
Life is full of journeys. We each pursue our personal journeys through life. Through
this process we learn, stumble, become resilient, experience grief, anger, sadness,
joy, contentment, develop friendships and relationships, and try to make sense
of ourselves and the world we inhabit. This exhibition represents many journeys:
personal and internal journeys as well as our journey as a group of textile artists.
Exhibiting Artists are Zoe Ferguson, Liz Stevenson, Gena Martin, Christine Hoffman, Leona
Greenslade, Jenny Morison, Sue Morley, Susan Phillips-Rees.

I’ve always enjoyed drawing. Painting such precise work with ink feels
like I am drawing with a brush. As my work develops I notice it move
into representations of human evolution and the different perspectives
on aspects of living. My work as well will continue to evolve. I hope you
engage with my art and find a message that means something to you.

It doesn’t take long to make and eat a yeast extract spread sandwich. So
what is a big nerd to do with the rest of their lunch break at work? Oh
yeah. Play with Lego and post photos of it on Instagram.
Simon Simonson
Inspired by the experience of Australian Nature these paintings combine
rigorous drawing with imaginative spirit, colour, light, and rhythm. They
are rendered with oil and charcoal on canvas.
Describing a place and time they also provide a portal to visit our inner
selves and personal experience.

Private Dancer - Annette Summers
My new work this year is titled ‘Private Dancer’, featuring the amazing
transgender women of Kings Cross. Towards the end of the 1970’s and
into the early 1980’s, changes began sweeping through the cabarets and
burlesque clubs. Real burlesque was fading out so we ladies became
‘Private Dancers’ in and around Sydney and beyond.

Vito
I am Divine
In the aftermath of Stonewall, a newly politicised Vito Russo found his voice as
a gay activist and critic of LGBTIQ representation in the media. He wrote “The
Celluloid Closet,” the first book to critique Hollywood’s portrayals of gays on
screen. During the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Vito became a passionate advocate
for justice via the newly formed ACT UP, before his death in 1990.
Director: Jeffrey Schwartz
Opening 8, November, 7.30pm, 11 - 17 November 8am til late
Take a step back through gay culture. This is the story of Divine, aka Harris
Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, teased Baltimore
youth to internationally recognised drag superstar through his collaboration with
filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image,
gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the
ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. Director: Jeffrey Schwartz

Impervious to the monotony of their working class small Texan town, they

her hot new femme lover and her best friend. Director: Campbell
A documentary about Gene Robinson, the openly Gay Bishop who set a
precedent in New Hampshire state politics, and the battle for LGBTIQ people to
receive full acceptance in the faith and the church. It is about church and state,
love and marriage, faith and identity-and one man’s struggle to dispel the notion
that God’s love has limits. (Special Jury Prize winner Sundance 2012).
Director: Macky Alston
Cameroon has more arrests for homosexuality than any other country in the world. This film is
a shocking yet intimate insight into the lives of these people. It follows Cédric and Gertrude, two
young Cameroonians, as they move between a secret, supportive LGBTIQ Community and an
outside culture that, though intensely homophobic, is in transition toward greater acceptance.

Codependent lesbian space
alien seeks same
Joshua Tree, 1951
Mosquita Y Mari
A smash hit at LGBTIQ and international film festivals across the globe. A fearless,
intimate fictional portrait of James Dean on the cusp of becoming a great actor
and an outsider icon. Stylishly evoking boundary-pushing, the film’s surreal and
dreamlike vignettes blend biographical and fictionalised elements to present pivotal
moments in Dean’s short yet remarkable life. A must-see gay film!
Director: Matthew Mishory
15-yr-old Mexican American, Yolanda lives with her mother, father and siblings
in a Latino suburb of Los Angeles. She is studious, diligent, well-adjusted and
quiet. Mari, also 15, moves into an adjacent flat with her single mother and
sister. Mari’s family are doing it tough. An exquisitely crafted coming of age tale
that follows a pair of Latina teens who fall gradually in love. Spanish
with English subtitles. Director: Aurora Guerrero
An inspiring documentary about ACT UP (the Aids Coalition to unleash Power),
the birth and life of the AIDS activist movement. Utilising oral histories as well
as rare archival footage, the film depicts the efforts of ACT UP as it battles
corporate greed, social indifference, and government negligence. Before there
was Occupy Wall Street or the Arab Spring, there was ACT UP.

A romantic comedy, sci-fi B-movie spoof. This is as silly and as camp as it gets
with silver alien costumes and monotone voices. Three lesbian space aliens come
to planet Earth. Zoinx hooks up with Jane, a shy, lonely earthling lesbian. Like all
good lesbians Jane is attracted to the person within and doesn’t see that Zoinx is
an alien. Ever wondered how aliens have sex? Director: Madeleine Olnek

A police detective (Al Pacino) goes undercover in the underground gay leather and S&M scene
of New York City to catch a serial killer who is murdering numerous gay men. As he learns
the codes, practices and complex rules of this new world the work starts to change him.
Controversial when first released, causing huge protests from the gay and lesbian community.
Director: William Friedkin. WARNING: GRAPHIC VIOLENCE & SEX SCENES
The 1980 film Cruising was plagued with controversy. Its director was forced to cut 40
minutes of sexually explicit material. Filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews reimagine the lost scenes in this intriguing film about the making of a film and the broader
exploration of sexual and creative freedom. Director: James Franco & Travis
Matthews. WARNING: Nudity and very explicit sex scenes
A story of an unlikely and daring friendship that develops despite social norms and
religious beliefs. Although Rana is a traditional wife and mother, she is forced to drive
a cab to pay off the debt that keeps her husband in prison. By chance she picks up
the wealthy and rebellious Eddie. When Rana realises that Eddie is transgender,
a dangerous series of conflicts arises. Director: Negar Azarbeyjani

A steamy July 4th night brings four people together in two tales of seduction and conflicted
desire. Joe is a black, middle-aged, married man out on an Internet date with June, a white
teenage boy. Abigayle is Joe’s precocious daughter, out on the town with a hot, wisecracking,
Latino basketball player named Dexter. As the two couples get to know each other intimately,
their realities are tested, and the outcome is bracing. Director: Joshua Sanchez

Queer Youth Drop In
This year we set up the Queer Youth Drop In Space at the City Soul Cafe. It is an alcohol free, LGBTIQ youth friendly space that operates each fortnight. It is a place
that is comfortable, run by youth, safe, a place to meet other Queer Youth, to present workshops, and performances, to network with peers and to chill out. We will
continue to run this throughout the year (except during our festival). Head to the Feast Queer Youth Drop in Facebook page for more info.
Feast Festival Queer Youth Space
During Feast we will set up Youth Spaces in our Feast ANZ Cluster where queer young people can
meet, feel safe and comfortable. There will be a series of events in this space throughout the
festival. There are also heaps of events in our main program that have been programmed with young
people in mind and have been endorsed by our Youth Project Committee (look out for the logo).
Inaugural Regional Outreach
Exchange Pilot Project
The Queer Youth Regional
Exchange Program
Mount Gambier, Port Lincoln, The Riverland & Whyalla
If you are over 18 and live in the regions and would like to come to Feast but
feel a little shy or don’t have the means...then this is for you.
We have set up an exchange program where we will host youth from the
regions during the Feast Festival in Adelaide and set up a ‘buddy’ system in
order for you to experience our wonderful festival.
We will provide assistance towards your travel and find you a suitable billet or
accommodation (if needed). We will introduce you to other like minded young
people and also provide you with tickets to shows and events. Our fabulous
Queer Youth Project Committee will ensure that you feel safe and looked
after throughout your time here. They have organised a whole series of youth
orientated events in our Queer Youth Space in the Cluster.
You must be over 18 and due to limited numbers will need to
apply to be part of the exchange. If you are interested in being
part of the exchange please contact either our project officers:
Lucy and Edwin ([email protected]) or Catherine our Artistic
Director ([email protected]).
In 2013 we were successful in gaining a Youth Connect Grant (Minister Communities
and Social Inclusion) to set up safe space and programs for regional queer, same sex
attracted and questioning youth in order to provide artistic and cultural activities and to
build relationships that may be relevant to young LGBTIQ people (as well as the broader
community) in order to break down barriers and promote acceptance.
We employed two Youth Project Officers (Edwin and Lucy) who have been busy liaising
with regional youth in order to present events in the four regions. These events will be
hosted by members of the Feast Youth Committee and involve strategic partners such as
Shine, BFriend, Country Arts SA, Riverland Youth Theatre and D’Faces of Art in Whyalla
and Ovation Theatre in Mount Gambier. Each program will be initiated, devised and
developed through consultation with youth groups, individuals and agencies to ensure the
right ‘fit’ for each particular area.
As an initial entrée into each region in September we toured Speak Out to schools and
communities in Strathalbyn, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier, Renmark, Glossip, Waikerie,
Loxton, Burra, Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Port Augusta.
Speak Out is a fabulous interactive performance piece, devised by Edwin Kemp Attrill as
part of his ActNow Theatre. Edwin is the Artistic Director of ActNow and has employed
some of the techniques of Augusto Baol in Speak Out. It is a non-threatening, non-didactic,
interactive theatre presentation about homophobia.
Check out the show at Feast – 2 performances only.

(and a game of bingo of course).
Thursday 21st – FYC’s OPEN MIC NIGHT - The West BAR (UniSA) 7 - 10.30pm
*Note: At the time of printing this guide we were still consulting, if you live in the
regions, keep your eyes posted on our Facebook and website and app for updates
so you know what will be happening in your area during Feast. Or contact Lucy or
Edwin on [email protected]
It’s just you, the stage, the microphone and a realm of endless possibility. Take part or be entertained by a showcase of magic,
drag, comedy, music, dance, poetry slam and spoken word. Raw vocal talent is encouraged, sing or recite your favourite and/
or original poems, songs or musings. A bit of passion, flair and imagination is all you need. Come and mix it up with other
Queer Youth.

of Adelaide’s 1973 Gay Pride Week Sport Competition
This exhibition of photographs and archives celebrates the 40th anniversary of the 1973

Organised by the Gay Activists Alliance, the 1973 Gay Pride Week included everything from
a Street March and Speakout, to leafleting ‘zaps’ and a Gay Remembrance Day.
In 2003 a group of enthusiastic women decided to develop same sex
dancesport in SA. After contacting the existing dancesport studios in Adelaide
they compiled a list of gay friendly venues and circulated this information

Flying the Rainbow Flag – Celebrating Diversity
After two years of Stephen Yarwood and the Adelaide City Council raising the rainbow flag for Feast we wrote to every Mayor and every municipal council in South
Australia inviting them to show their support for LGBTIQ people and their families living in their area. We asked them to actively contribute to the health and well
being of the whole community by flying the rainbow flag for the duration of our Feast Festival 9-24 November. We saw this as a simple symbolic way in which councils
can help celebrate the Feast Festival State wide, as well as publicly acknowledging their council/city’s role as a leader in promoting and celebrating diversity.
As of the end of September those councils who will fly the rainbow flag are:
Charles Sturt is...
celebrating the
Feast Festival.

Thank You
Sponsors
Feast Festival has a fresh new feel in
2013. We are moving to a new location,
The Feast ANZ Cluster in the Lion Arts
Centre Courtyard and also getting back
to our roots with the iconic Picnic in the
Park going back to the Parklands. We are
expanding our metropolitan and regional
reach too with new Youth programs
and introducing exciting new events like
Bedlam, the massive DJ Party.
Once again the exciting changes at
Feast for this year’s festival have been
created through the imagination, business
acumen and tenacity of the broad Feast
team, including staff, volunteers and
board members. As ever we rely on
our Sponsors, including ANZ Bank, our
Principal Sponsor, Government sponsors,
both state and local, and other businesses
who quietly and steadily support Feast
over many years. Every year we welcome
new sponsors into the mix including
Beyondblue, Bulmers Cider, Renewal SA,
Port Adelaide Enfield Council and the City
of Charles Sturt to name a few this year.
We are also supported by our Feast 500
benefactors and this year have re-branded
this program aiming for 500 people to
donate whatever they can and to become
Feast 500 members in 2013.
This is my final year at Feast, in fact by
November I will be rejoining Festival goers
enjoying great shows and entertainment

an incredible time working with this
not-for-profit organisation that strives to
bring artistic excellence and a significant
place for our Community to celebrate who
we are every year. The effort required to

takes all of us, including you who give that
support by buying tickets and spending
