RIVERLAND HILLS BAPTIST CHURCH FEBRUARY Issue 2009 Volume 38 Number 2 insight Love is in the air! Happy Valentine’s Day - February 14 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love” MEN’S MESS – PIG PICKIN’ Monday, February 9, 6:00 p.m. – 1 Corinthians 13:13 CELEBRATING WOMEN’S MISSIONS WMU week is February 9 - 15 UPWARD AWARDS NIGHT Thursday, March 5, 6:30 p.m. riverlandhills.org PAGE 2 FEBRUARY 2009 THE SECRET RECIPE WE ALL NEED by Dr. Ed Carney, Senior Pastor THERE IS SOMETHING YOU NEED, I need, and we all need especially in “these days.” It is encouragement. Never underestimate what a few words can do to make a difference in someone’s life. Here is a true story: Times were tough for him. He lost his dad at five and dropped out of school when he was 12. By 17 he had lost job after job. By 20 he had been married, fathered a child and was Dr. Ed Carney separated. He failed at being a railroad conductor, a farmer and an insurance salesman. Even after mending the marriage, the only job he held was cooking and washing dishes. After a lifetime of “just getting by,” at retirement his Social Security check of $105 was so discouraging that he decided to take his own life. His wife discovered his plan and said "Let me tell you one thing you can do, I believe you can do this better than anybody I've ever known." He said, "What's that?" She said, "You can cook." He said, "Do you really think so?" She said, "You're fabulous." Those words were enough for him to stand up, borrow $87, buy some chicken from the grocery store and sell it door-to-door. John Y. Brown was so impressed by the taste that he offered him money and a business partnership. The man's name was Colonel Harlan Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken. What is the real secret recipe? Encouragement. “ “When Barnabas came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord.” – Acts. 11:23 ” RHU RIVERLAND HILLS UNIVERSITY Equipping Believers For Priority Living Riverland Hills University (RHU) is the place where we equip believers with the essentials for church membership, spiritual maturity, and ministry.
