Eagle Scout Project Enhances
Twin Lakes Path
I
David Haney shows map
before it was mounted.
t’s been said that there is a difference between
“walking a path” and “knowing a path”. Thanks
to David Haney, an extraordinary Eagle Scout, everyone
will begin to know the Twin Lakes path that they walk.
Last fall, David and his father designed and constructed
directional signs for the Twin Lakes Path, a ¾ mile paved
walkway which connects the Main Campus with the
North Campus. The signs which include a map, legend
and mile markers are encased in weather-proof material
that will allow for superior durability, guiding residents
and community members along the path for years to
come.
Along with his father, a fellow Eagle Scout, David
worked closely with Twin Lakes’ associates and Viox
associate Brian Dargis to map the path and its unique
areas. He evaluated the best materials for the job and
enthusiastically coordinated the project from start to
finish. To enhance the nature experience he also built
and installed several bluebird houses along the path.
David proposed this project at the start of his sophomore
year of high school and the project finished up in his
junior year. He raised over half of the funds needed
for the signs, with the Haney family donating the
remaining funds to truly make this special project come
together in a meaningful way. An Eagle Scout project
has to incorporate the Boy Scouts 12 core values
(Citizenship, Compassion, Cooperation, Courage,
Faith, Health, Honesty, Perseverance, Positive Attitude,
Resourcefulness, Respect and Responsibility) and David
embraced each of these values at some point in the
project and received his Eagle Scout certification.
So, the next time you walk the path, you will begin to
“know” the path, thanks to the beautiful signs David
created especially for the campus! You will surely be
impressed by his talent and dedication.

Living Legacies
Supporting the Mission
A
t Twin Lakes and Twin Towers, we are very
blessed to have residents and friends of our
foundation with philanthropy in their hearts. Many of
these individuals found the Living Legacy program,
where making a bequest of property, a charitable gift
annuity, a charitable trust or a certificate of deposit
naming Twin Lakes or Twin Towers the beneficiary
with their bank, to be an excellent vehicle for their
generosity. “This important program is the embodiment
of the saying “I am my brother’s keeper,” as Molly
Talbot, Vice President of the Life Enriching Communities
(LEC) Foundation says. “ The support shown to Twin
Lakes and Twin Towers through the Living Legacy
Program is the cornerstone of our ministry.”
Pat and Ed Thomas
Pat and Ed Thomas have lived at Twin Lakes for the last
11 years — longer than most residents. Pat has lived in
Cincinnati her whole life and met Ed, a Connecticut
native, when they attended Marietta College. After
graduation, Ed received a job offer in Cincinnati
so they established their lives in the community of
Mariemont. They were intrigued by the location of
Twin Lakes when it came time to consider where they
wanted to spend their retirement years. “We have
absolutely loved every minute of living at Twin Lakes!”
says Pat. “Our neighbors and friends are incredible
and the staff is just the best.” Pat is the Chairman of
the South Campus Resident’s Group and Ed is one of
the “Grumpies”, a group of men
on the South Campus who meet
every Thursday morning for coffee.
“There is something here for
everyone,” says Pat. “We enjoy
parties and get togethers. We have
friends in many other retirement
communities and we think that
Twin Lakes is the one that is most
welcoming. It’s almost like going
back to college!”

The Thomas’ became Living
Legacy members for many
reasons, including their strong
connection to the Twin Lakes
community and a passionate
desire to see the mission of
the LEC Foundation continue.
“When considering a charitable
gift annuity, it felt right to make
a bequest to the LEC Foundation.
After we moved in, we decided
that if this was going to be our
home, we’d like to give back to
it if possible, and fortunately we
are able to do that,” says Pat.
“We love Twin Lakes and want to keep the
mission going with any gift we can offer.”
Paul and Joann Ward
Paul and Joann Ward aren’t residents
of Twin Lakes or Twin Towers, but
their connections to the organization,
particularly at Twin Towers, have deep
roots. They are long time residents of the
west side of Cincinnati — 65 years to be
exact, and have known many friends who
have lived at Twin Towers. Being of the
United Methodist faith, the Wards like to
support United Methodist organizations,
so coupling that with their familiarity with
Twin Towers, gifting an annuity to the Life
Enriching Communities Foundation felt
natural.
When they became Living Legacy
members, the Wards didn’t think twice
about the fact they did not live on either
of the Life Enriching Communities
campuses. “The people we knew who
lived at Twin Towers and our personal
relationships with the associates,
including John Seay and David
Schneider, solidified our decision
to gift an annuity to Life Enriching
Communities,” says Joann Ward. “We
believe in their mission and know that
we made the right decision. We hope
our contribution will help to continue the good
works of Life Enriching Communities.”
Paul and Joann Ward
The Life Enriching Communities Foundation is blessed
with charitable gifting and generous supporters. Gifts to
the Foundation support the Pastoral Care ministries in
the communities and the Benevolent Care Fund which
provides assistance to residents who have outlived
their financial resources. Our Living Legacy members
provide the LEC Foundation with the ability to carry
out the mission of “being our brother’s keeper” and we
look forward to continuing that mission for generations
to come. Please contact Molly Talbot, Vice President of
Development, at 513-719-3540 if you would like more
information about our Living Legacy program or for
information on other ways to give back to Life Enriching
Communities.

Partnership with
Carpe Diem
School a Win
for Everyone
F
or members of our Twin Towers
community, an exciting new
dining program partnership has been
introduced. We are working with
Carpe Diem High School, located in
College Hill, to establish a program
that employs students in dining
services as part of a work-study
program. The inaugural class was
formed in November 2014 and will
be part of the Dining Services team
through April. The program will have
two classes per year, each with a
six-month assignment. The classes
will have a maximum of six students
participating.
The Carpe Diem/Twin Towers partnership
is proving to be beneficial to the school,
the students who are participating
and Twin Towers. Students have an
opportunity to learn valuable customer service skills
and positive work habits – and earn money! They are
establishing relationships outside of their school and
neighborhood. They also gain valuable work experience
- this is the first job for many of the student workers.
The program benefits Carpe Diem School as it provides
tuition support and allows them an opportunity to
offer a work-study program. The work-study program is
appealing to many potential students, so it will likely
increase enrollment at Carpe Diem. The work-study
program benefits Twin Towers by offering a reliable
source of new dining services team members. Michele
Elsasser, Human Resources Manager at Twin Towers,
worked closely with Carpe Diem Dean of Students,
Yolanda Cooper to establish the work study program.
The student workers are involved in all aspects of the

dining room experience. They assist in food preparation,
setting tables, serving meals and beverages and
clearing dishes. “The student-workers have been a great
addition to our Dining Services team. We are seeing
great results from this program all around and we are
excited to be able to continue to provide an exceptional
everyday experience in the Twin Towers dining room,”
says Michele. “The partnership with Carpe Diem has
generated a lot of excitement at Twin Towers and has
brought a great energy to our dining room!”
The Twin Towers/Carpe Diem Work Study program is off
to a great start. The inaugural class has been a success
and we look forward to welcoming a new class of
student workers in early May. We are excited to see the
continued growth and success of this program for both
Carpe Diem and Twin Towers.

Be Part of Something Big:
Friends of Twin Lakes/
Twin Towers Auxiliary
T
he Twin Towers Auxiliary has had a vital
role in the Twin Towers community since its
establishment in 1922. Likewise, the Friends of Twin
Lakes was established shortly after the first residents
moved in to the community. The focus of these important
groups is to improve the quality of life of Twin Towers’
and Twin Lakes’ residents by engaging volunteers to serve
in various areas of the community, to offer programs for
residents and their families, to assist in the Health Services
area and to overall enhance the lives of Twin Towers’ and
Twin Lakes’ residents.
We are blessed to have a diverse group of members
in the Friends of Twin Lakes and the Twin Towers
Auxiliary groups. Residents, family members, friends
of Life Enriching Communities and members of our
neighborhoods join together to have an extraordinary
impact on Twin Lakes and Twin Towers. The philanthropic
work done by these groups is outstanding! Our members
give not only of their treasure, through membership dues,
gift shop purchases, generous donations and more, but
they also give their time and talent. Throughout the year,
T
the Friends of Twin Lakes
and the Twin Towers
Auxiliary hold numerous
events at our facilities
and also in our extended
neighborhood communities.

Membership in both the Friends of Twin Lakes and the
Twin Towers Auxiliary is steadily growing. This speaks to
the quality of the communities at Twin Lakes and Twin
Towers that the membership is growing so fast. “We are
so pleased with what these programs have become,”
says Molly Talbot, Vice President of Life Enriching
Communities Foundation. “We look forward to continued
growth.” If you or someone you know would like more
information on the Friends of Twin Lakes or the Twin
Towers Auxiliary, please contact Molly Talbot at

list so you can be kept in the loop about upcoming events
and projects.
A “Great Living Cincinnatian”, Tom Wilburn!
he Cincinnati USA
Regional Chamber
honored Twin Lakes’ resident, Tom
Wilburn, as part of its 2015 class
of Great Living Cincinnatians.
Tom was the CEO of Bethesda
Hospitals for 24 years and was
the CEO of TriHealth from its
inception in 1995 until he retired
in 1998. Tom went on to serve
as director of the Bethesda
Foundation and as Chair Emeritus
of the Health Improvement Collaborative of Greater
Cincinnati. Tom Wilburn’s impact on various Health
Care organizations in Cincinnati has been significant.
He has been called a talented organizational planner
and strategist who helped establish the TriHealth
organization. Before mergers and collaborations were
common in the healthcare field, Tom was instrumental
in guiding the TriHealth formation. It has been said that
Cincinnati’s national reputation for being a pioneer of
modern healthcare is owed, in part, to the contributions
that Tom Wilburn made. In addition to his career at
Bethesda and TriHealth, Tom served on many national
and community boards, including as chairman of the
board of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, the
first ever from the health care sector. Last year he was
also honored with the Health Care Heroes Lifetime
Achievement Award. Tom is the second Twin Lakes
resident to receive this honor. Dr. Bea Lampkin received
this recognition in 2013. Life Enriching Communities
congratulates Tom on his Greatest Living Cincinnatian
honor and is proud to have him as part of the Twin Lakes
community!
