Behavioral Care is a residential program that operates in the Wilson Building on ACH’s Summit Campus. This program offers children, ages 4-12, a safe and highly structured home when moderate to severe behavior problems prevent them from living with their families, or in a less structured placement. This program provides basic and therapeutic services in a safe and structured residential environment that teaches Behavioral Care Program facilities makeover includes renovations adaptive behaviors, supports successful for living area. child development, promotes family reunification where possible, and secures the optimal level of living for each child. The Behavioral Care Program can serve up to 10 boys and girls, ages 4-12, at any given time. The average length of stay in this program is approximately nine months. A successful discharge from this program includes significant improvements in behavior that will allow a child to return home, or to a less restrictive environment. Twenty-three children were served in this program in 2008. 2009 Foundation Board Larry Autrey Chair Harry Brants Vernon Bryant Sherrie Cyrier Mark Johnson Susan Rose This fabulous renovation consisted of mostly cosmetic improvements. All of the children’s bathrooms were upgraded with new tile and fixtures, and the showers and bathtubs now shine like new after being professionally resurfaced. All of the children’s bedrooms received new flooring, a fresh coat of paint, new bedding and window treatments. Each living area also received a fresh coat of paint, new carpet, window coverings and furniture. During the renovations, the children were temporarily relocated to the Alice B. Walker Building on the Summit Campus. Upon arriving in the newly renovated Wilson building, one child remarked, “Wow, it’s the same, only better!” Continued on Page 2 In This Issue: Extreme Makeover...................................1 2008 Holiday Recap......................................8 Volunteer Highlights..............................4 Donor Appreciation and Tributes.............10 Working Smarter..................................5 Trainings and Luncheons..........................16 Wichita Campus Groundbreaking....6 …Extreme Fundraising The Behavioral Care Program makeover was made possible because of some extraordinary fundraising by the 2008 Hoot ‘n Holler Committee. The Hoot ‘n Holler Committee, co-chaired by Janis Brous and Joanie Darden, sold out Hoot ‘n Holler again this year and doubled the anticipated revenue for the event. The Hoot ‘n Holler 2008 Committee presents ACH with a check for $320,000. Pictured, L to R: Wayne Carson, Joanie Darden and Janis Brous. So many generous supporters contributed to the success of the 2008 Hoot ‘n Holler. The efforts of the committee, combined with the support of the community, generated over $300,000 to benefit the residential programs of All Church Home. These funds provided critical operating revenue for all of ACH’s residential programs and the much-needed renovations for the Behavioral Care Program. Over 300 patrons enjoyed a wonderful fall evening atop the Reata Restaurant and were treated to another great Reata feast! After dinner, partygoers enjoyed the Four Day Weekend Comedy Improv Show and some great jazz music at the Reata Rooftop Bar. Throughout the month of December, volunteers decorated Christmas trees, hosted parties, sorted and wrapped gifts, and helped with after-holiday cleanup. It was wonderful to have so much support at Heather Parker he lps a ch such a busy time of the year. selected gift for his loved ild wrap a carefully one. We are very grateful for each volunteer who came to help – in good weather and in bad. Their gifts of time, talent and cheerful spirits truly made a difference. At this year’s Santa’s Workshop parties, children and youth in the ACH Maggie Till, Jake Skinner, Cresson Haugland and Valerie residential programs once Skinner sort gifts. again had the opportunity to “shop” for presents for their family members. Volunteers helped set up and decorate for the parties, assisted the children with selecting and wrapping gifts, helped children decorate Christmas stockings and Santa hats, and stayed to clean up. Volunteers also provided many hours of service sorting and organizing gifts to ensure that each child received the designated gifts on his/her wish list. Volunteers Keep Care Closet Organized Shirley Belcher, Mary Gardner, Betty Muhlenbeck and Maxine Orr provided volunteer support during Christmas, but they have also been helping in the Care Closet for several months. In September, their Bible study group asked if they could volunteer at ACH on a Mary Gardner, Maxine Orr, Betty Muhlenbeck and Shirley regular basis. Belcher keep the Care Closet neat and organized. We had just the right job for these energetic ladies with servant hearts. Their volunteer hours have kept the Care Closet neatly arranged for ACH clients with basic clothing needs. Each month, they sort and organize new and gently-used clothing that has been donated to ACH. We are very fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers who are willing to help where the need is the greatest. Thank you, ladies, for your time, warm hearts, and never-ending smiles. 4 Beth Straley organizes gifts. Volunteers Needed The next Safe Place Site Check Days are Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2. Individual and group volunteers are needed to visit area Safe Place sites to ensure that Safe Place signs and materials are properly displayed and site employees are informed and trained on response procedures. These periodic site checks ensure that youth receive immediate services in times of crisis. A small commitment of your time can mean a world of difference to a youth in crisis. The Safe Place program provides immediate safety and assurance to youth and is a critical access point for crisis intervention services. If you would like more information about the program, please contact Jennifer Williams, Safe Place Coordinator, at 817.886.7158 or [email protected]. For more information about volunteering, please contact Valerie Valentine-Heath, Volunteer Coordinator, at 817.886.7101 or [email protected]. A description of all volunteer opportunities and the volunteer process can be found on our Web site at www.allchurchhome.org. Working Smarter by Dr. Wayne Carson, CEO Research studying how to best help children overcome the effects of child abuse and neglect points almost universally to the importance of family involvement. Successful outcomes are much more likely when children continue to live with family members or live in a family setting. This may sound strange, given that abuse usually occurs at the hand of a family member; however, even in severe cases of abuse, it is rare that all family members are dangerous. Often, with support, family members can provide safe homes for children, if they work together and if the abusive person is removed, trained, or treated. For nearly three years, ACH has contracted with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to deliver an innovative approach to help keep children safe in families where abuse has occurred. This program, called Family Group Conferencing (FGC), offers an exciting alternative to traditional child welfare responses. Instead of simply placing children in foster care to protect them, a Family Group Conference aims to mobilize an entire family, using their skills and resources, to protect their children. The key here is engaging the entire family, including aunts, uncles, grandparents, adult siblings, and any other available relatives who have an interest in protecting Engaging and these young children. In an FGC, the family and the state workers meet together mobilizing families to create a plan which will keep children safe with family members. These meetings are facilitated by a trained ACH facilitator. to protect their It is not unusual for an FGC to involve 10-15 people. Due to the importance of developing a strong plan, and the intensity of emotion often present in the meetings, a typical FGC lasts for 3-5 hours. Food is served, ideas are discussed and, at the end of the meeting, a plan is developed. If the family creates a strong and enforceable safety plan which is approved by the state workers, children will be allowed to remain with a family member, and the state worker will monitor the situation and arrange for needed treatment services. own children is an important strategy for the future of child welfare. Under this contract with TDFPS, ACH has facilitated over 125 Family Group Conferences. A state-wide study of the program indicated children had shorter lengths of stay in placement and greater rates of reunification with family when family members participated in this program. This has resulted in a win-win situation both for the state and for children. The “win” for the state is that state dollars are not spent on unnecessary days in placement. The more important “win” is for the children, who are better able to overcome their abuse because they receive treatment while surrounded by family members working together to protect them. Creative responses to challenging problems are essential to best help children realize their incredible potential. Engaging and mobilizing families to protect their own children is an important strategy for the future of child welfare. 5 Wichita Campus Groundbreaking All Church Home for Children officially broke ground on its new Wichita Campus on a beautiful December afternoon with several hundred friends, donors, guests, staff, and local, state and national dignitaries in attendance. The ceremony marked the start of the renovation of what will be the organization’s new main campus at 3600 Wichita Street in southeast Fort Worth. Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief, U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger, U.S. Congressman Michael Burgess, and Fort Worth Mayor Pro Tem Kathleen Hicks were on hand to help “turn the dirt” for the celebration. Each official spoke about ACH’s long history of serving children and families, and the importance of ACH relocating to an area of Fort Worth that will be undergoing revitalization in future years. Congressman Burgess donated a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol. “Today’s celebration marks the official start of this exciting project that will allow ACH to ultimately serve more than 450 additional children and families each year,” said Dr. Wayne Carson. “Without the incredible generosity of Valerie and Michael Mallick and their donation of 19.3 acres to ACH, this project would simply not be moving forward at this time,” Dr. Carson continued. “Our board and staff are extremely grateful for the Mallicks’ commitment to the community and to ACH.” Construction has already begun on a perimeter brick wall that will surround the property. In 2009, renovations on the Program Office Building and Chapel will occur, with plans to relocate the staff and programs currently operating from the Broadway Campus to the Wichita Campus by the end of the year. crief, U.S. ayor Mike Mon M th or W leen Hicks. rt Pro Tem Kath Newman, Fo or nn ay Ly M r th ai or Ch ACH Board ss, and Fort W Michael Burge Congressman Valerie a nd Mic yor Mike Moncrief, yne Carson, Jungus Jordan, Ma Glenn and Julie Davidson, Wa , Valerie and Michael s, Kathleen Hicks, Lynn Newman Congressman Michael Burges t. get Granger, and Happy Bag Mallick, Congresswoman Kay 6 U.S. Cong hael M allick. resswoma n Kay Gra nger. Tucker In Memory of Richard Spraberry On December 18, 2008, All Church Home lost a dear friend and loyal supporter when Richard Foy Spraberry passed away after a long illness. Richard was an active community member throughout his life and in recent years had worked with several nonprofit agencies, including ACH, that work with disadvantaged children. He was Vice President of the M.S. Doss Foundation in Seminole and assisted many children’s associations and hospitals in obtaining grants for disadvantaged children with disabilities or those in foster care. Richard worked closely with ACH staff during the Building Hope Capital Campaign and ultimately secured a naming gift for the Doss Family Home that now houses six children. Richard Spraberry at Doss Family Home Celebration held on December 9, 2006. “ACH has lost a good friend. Richard had such a great heart for our mission and our kids. We will truly miss working with him. This is a tremendous loss for us and Fort Worth,” said Dr. Wayne Carson, CEO. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Vivian, and four daughters. *Denotes multiple gifts during the giving period. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the names listed.
