PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
July 26,,2015
From the Pastor’s Desk Fr. Philip Kollithanath
Catholic Tradition upholds the Sancity of Family life at all times, Pope Francis presents three magic words in a happy marriage;
please, thank you and sorry: (Words of Joy and Life p.27) Pope elaborates on these as the rules of life. Pope quote St. Francis
that courtesy extinguishes hatred and kindles love. When parents model this on a daily basis, children will have it spontaneously. Such good habits will retard the violent tendencies among the youth of this age.
Citing the example of the grateful leper (lk17:11-19, Pope Francis observes that “Thank you” is the open acknowledgement that
the other person is a gift from God. Instead of using it as a pretense, one should know how to express the gratitude from the
heart that will nourish an ongoing intimacy in married life.
Pope Francis points out that accusing the other is our inherent human tendency to avoid responsibility, beginning with Adam
(Genesis 3:11-14). The secret of maintaining love in married life is to “never let the sun go down without making peace”. We
have to learn to say sorry and ask for forgiveness so that life will move on smoothly.
Vatican II Document, Gaudium et Spes, 48 explains about marriage that man and woman are consecrated in their love. They
make visible the love with which Christ loves His church, by continuing togive His life for her in fidelity and service.
It is prayer that cements this marital bond. When husband prays for his wife and wife prays for her husband, this bond becomes
strong.
We have to look at family from this prayerful aspect where God’s will and His plan of salvation are more important than our
human satisfaction and enjoyment. Everything is not for everyone. It is understandable that some people cannot enter into this
holy sacrament of matrimony in its fullness as designed by Go. But that should not degrade the fact that marriage as set forth by
God us between one man and one woman. Secular world has different agenda. We frequently tend to go by popular voice of
propaganda media. Prayer enables us to look at our life in the context of God’s plan for us. That is what every Christian should
strive to. That is the sign of a child of God.
God Bless you All.
Sarcament of Baptism—Baptism is a highly sacred event and deserves careful

Gospel —Jesus feeds a large crowd with five barley

TREASURES AND TRADITIONS
Sooner of later, as they plan their wedding liturgy, a couple will
receive some advice about a “unity candle.” They need one, they are told
(at great expense); it is a tradition; it is what Catholics have always done.
Not so. In the last thirty years or so, the custom has enjoyed wide popularity in the United States. It has never been officially part of our liturgy,
and it exists in tension with some of our core symbols. Usually there are
two smaller candles and one larger one to be lit from the smaller. Large
candles in our tradition always mean Christ, and smaller ones are always
tokens of our baptismal candle. If the candles are meant for a kind of
renewal of baptismal vows, then the meaning is clearer, yet this is seldom
the understanding. Why, then, are those smaller candles extinguished?
It’s hard to tell where these pesky candles came from. Some suggest
that the Presbyterian Church, which has a very lean wedding liturgy,
introduced them as an option for extending a short service. Generally,
it’s been experienced as a “photo opportunity” rather than a genuine
liturgical ritual. The “unity candle,” a recent invention rather than an
authentic tradition, has not been approved as an adaptation to our rite,
and it is to be hoped that it will gradually disappear approved as an gradu-

Fr. Philip Kollithanath Pastor
July 26 2015

a todas nuestras necesidades.”
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
