From Fr. Mike’s Desk
“For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have
mercy on us and on the whole world.” These
words taken from the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, ask God our Father to have mercy on the world
and upon us. To have mercy on us due to the fact
of the suffering and passion of His Son, Our Lord
Jesus Christ. The Church last weekend celebrated
Easter Sunday as we remembered Jesus’ triumph
over sin and death, and now today we seem to be
moving back to Good Friday, as we remember His
passion and sacrifice on the Cross. Yet, our Gospel reading takes place on Easter Sunday Night,
and the week that followed. However, we are being reminded of the connection between Easter
and Good Friday. If Jesus did not die for our sins
then we are totally not forgiven and if he did not
rise from the dead, we could not share in His Eternal Life. Yet so many people do not believe, and
as we see in today’s Gospel, even Thomas the
Apostle did not believe. No, he did not believe
even after he was told by the others that Jesus had
appeared to them. This doubt ended the following
week when the Risen Lord reappeared and this
time Thomas was there.
Thomas had to see or he would not believe, and
I am sure we all know someone just like him.
This is where faith and trust come in. Easter is a
time of great faith and a time to trust God and the
promises He made through the Patriarchs, Moses,
the Prophets and Our Lord. That is why Jesus,
when He appeared to Saint Faustina, told her that
He wanted the Feast of the Divine Mercy to be a
part of the Easter Season; for as the message on
the icon tells us we should not fear and we should
believe. The message is simple, “Jesus I trust in
you.” This is not a maybe statement, this is a
statement of certainty! This is what Jesus is calling Thomas to when He asks him, “Have you
come to believe because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” This is also seen in today’s reading from
the Acts of the Apostles, when we are told; “Thus
they even carried the sick out into the streets and
laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter
would come by, so that least his shadow might fall
on one another of them.” We may say well that’s
very well for St. Thomas and for the people who
lived during the time of the Apostles, but what
about us? Sure it is hard sometimes to trust and
sometimes s feels like God is not around. Just
look at the economy, gun violence and acts of terror. With all of these, and so much more, how can
we believe and have faith? Well these things are
not new, nor are they unique to this age, as people
have been dealing with things like this since the
dawn of time. Yet faith has always existed and it
continues when people like you and I pray, celebrate the Sacraments, and work every day to share
with others our total trust in God. It is up to us to
help and support each other in our faith and trust
that is why Jesus commands us to come together
every week to celebrate the Eucharist.
So many times people come to see a priest,
deacon, religious sister or brother, or a lay minister of the Church and they share that something is
missing in their lives. They do not know what to
do and they cannot understand why God is letting
this happen. When the person is asked how often
they attend Mass, the usual answer is, “I do not go
to Mass, but I do pray or I am not religious I am
spiritual. Even if they are praying every day,
which is good and we should do this, it is not
enough. Not enough because as is stated above,
we need the help and support of each other and
we need to pray with and for each other, and we
need to receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
How can we have faith and trust in Him, if he is
not within us? For when we receive Jesus in the
Blessed Sacrament, we are given His strength, and
we are brought closer to each other and to the Father as individuals and as a community. I have
never understood why people would deprive themselves of anything that God wants to give them.
After all these same people would not turn down a
great offer made to them by a store or any other
company, so why do they turn down the very best
that they could have, Jesus and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Happy Easter
Fr. Mike

ONE FAITH FAMILY
One of the most important members of our family of faith are our priests – the
Fathers who are there for us day in and day out throughout our lives.
Ordained in June of 2015, Fr. Sean Magaldi grew up in Williston Park where he attended
Mass with his family at Saint Aidan Parish. It was in his junior year at Chaminade High
School that he first started thinking about studying to be a priest.
“My goal is to get as many people to
heaven as possible – including myself – to
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------journey with the people of our Diocese in
growing closer to Christ.”
Fr. Sean Magaldi
“The priesthood was something that I started thinking about in high school; throughout college
it was in the back of my mind but I wasn’t ready to take the next step to enter the seminary.
After graduating from college, I started working as a Catholic Campus Minister at Hofstra
University. Working with the students at Hofstra helped me realize that God was calling me to
be a priest and I needed to enter the seminary.”
Father Magaldi currently serves as an Associate Pastor at St. Patrick in Smithtown where
he shared his goals as a priest.
Please consider donating to the Appeal and a difference in someone’s life. Thank you!
