They have been active in the Parish, contributing their valuable time and talent serving on a variety of committees, providing much needed food for the Parish pantry and offering pro bono medical assistance and guidance. Mary also serves at weekly Mass as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Tony and Mary live by the words stated by Pope Francis, “feed the poor” and “care for those who have nothing”. Together they serve the Lord in a quiet humble manner, yet very effectively. Tony practices internal medicine at Winthrop University Hospital and continues to make house calls to his infirmed patients as part of his private practice located in Floral Park. During the Christmas season Mary coordinates their office-sponsored gift card and warm glove & scarf collection. These goods are distributed to over 500 families in local parishes as well as St. Edward’s. Ten years ago Tony and Mary started their own food recovery program with Trader Joe’s in Plainview. Each evening Tony collects unused or unsalable food that would otherwise be thrown out. He fills his SUV to capacity and the next morning brings it to his office for collection by different parishes for distribution in their own pantry. Mary coordinates these efforts with the pastor or director of each pantry to ensure a seamless pick-up each day. The volume of food recovered has grown considerably over the years causing Tony and Mary to purchase refrigerators and freezers so they can store the food overnight. Their goal each day is to share the food with the poor, the hungry and the underprivileged in local communities. It is in the true spirit of Pope Francis that Tony and Mary have identified the ways and means of addressing the needs of the poor and less fortunate. Congratulations to Tony and Mary as the 2015 recipients of the St. Agnes Medal of Service. Honorees are lay people whose love of the Church has been shown through their devotion to the Holy Father, to our diocese and their Parish. Parishioners Anthony and Mary Cordaro with Fr. Joe Fitzgerald From the Pastor’s Desk Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” tells us the story of events happening in London and Paris during the days of the French Revolution. It depicts London as a place of calm and safety and it shows Paris to be a place of chaos, and that all there are in danger. As he tells us, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. In today’s readings, we have A Tale of Two Widows, only in this case there is not a contrast between them. Yes, they lived in different cities and at different times, but their response to God was the same; it was the response of total Trust. The widow of Zarephath trusted God when the Prophet Elijah said to her that the flour in the jar and little oil she had will not run out until the Lord sends the rain. Most of us in this situation would have said, “What are you crazy, I do not have enough for myself and for my child. Why should I feed you?” Yet she does not say this, and she knows that she can indeed trust God through the words spoken by the Prophet. As we shall see, her trust is well placed! The other widow is the one at the Temple who gives two small coins into the Temple Treasury as a sign of total trust in God. Jesus contrasts her gift to those who were rich and powerful and who put in large sums of money. He tells us that she put in more than the others. Why, we listen, “Amen I say to you, the poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she from her poverty, has contributed all she had…” Why did she give all that she had, was she foolish? Maybe, but like her counterpart (the widow of Zarephath) she totally trusted in God, so she is willing to give more than just her surplus wealth (which she did not have). Jesus points her out so we can follow her example of Sacrificial Giving, because in a real sense she was following the example of Jesus who sacrificed everything on the Cross, so that we may have eternal life. Sacrificial Giving means more than just giving of your treasure, it means giving of your whole self to God. This wisdom supercedes the wisdom of some of the Scribes and the Pharisees, who walked around in fine robes and received places of and titles of honor, and only outwardly appeared to give all to God, while inwardly cared only for themselves. As Christians we cannot merely believe and worship God on the surface, just for others to see. No, we must strive to have a true faith which goes down to and comes from our hearts the very core of our being, and we must strive to trust just as the two widows. Please keep in your prayers our young people who are getting ready to receive the fullness of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as they will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this week on November 11th. Keep them, their sponsors and their families in your prayers and let us pray that they will indeed become strong adult members of our Church and that their faith will grow. May God bless you always, and thank you for all you do for our beautiful parish. Fr. Fr. Fr. Fr. Fr. What is true religion and devotion to God? Jesus warns his disciples against the wrong kind of religion. In his denunciation of the scribes (the religious experts of his day), he warns against three things: the desire for prominence rather than selfless service; the desire for deference and recognition (and seeking esteem from others) rather than seeking to promote the good of others through humble service and love; and thirdly, attempting to use one's position (even a religious position) for self-gain and self-advancement. True religion is relating rightly to God and to one's neighbor with love, honor, and respect. The Lord puts his Holy Spirit within us that we may be filled with the joy of his presence, the joy of true worship, and the joy of selfless giving and love for others. True reverence for God frees the heart to give liberally, both to God and to neighbor. From Death To New Life Please pray for the souls of Demetria M.
