What is Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)?
Prior Learning Assessment is a way of judging skill levels of candidates who do not come through the traditional
paths of learning. PLA was set up in Alberta to deal with the many requests for registration that did not meet the
requirements of formal training and testing in the normal path to become an optician.
To be eligible for PLA you must apply to the registrar, with a resume of your work experience and references
from at least two opticians or optometrists. Strict criteria are used to assess eligibility on an individual basis.
Prior Learning has been used to assess the skill levels of candidates:
From out of the country, when judging training equivalency is difficult.
From within Canada who have gone through a different training process.
From within Canada who have no formal education but have a number of years of experience.
Alberta is the only province that has this kind of process. Other provinces have made use of it to solve problems
in their jurisdiction where mutual acceptance of licenses applies.
Prior Learning Assessment costs $250.00 and is a cost recovery program. This fee is subject to change. Three
examiners are involved in the decisions made in this combination written and practical assessment of skills.
All recommendations are passed to the Registrar who makes the final decision. The Prior Learning Assessment
Committee may recommend a number of things.
1. That the candidate be given a license with no further testing.
2. That the candidate takes an upgrade course in certain areas to polish rusty or lacking skills before Practical
Examination.
3. That the candidate be allowed to challenge the Practical Examination.
4. That the candidate go back to the beginning of the NAIT course and be educated before being allowed
to challenge the Practical Exam.
Prior Learning Assessment for eyeglasses has been running in Alberta for several years. We are now in the process
of statistically analyzing the results. Individual assessments show that the goals have been achieved judged by the
success levels of the candidates. PLA for contact lenses has been up running for a year.
For further information on the PLA process or how to apply contact the AOA office.
Moving?
Please let the AOA Office know if your address will change or if you have already moved.
This will ensure that you will continue to receive all association mailings.
If you have changed employment let us know so we can keep our records updated.
It is a requirement of regulation that we maintain accurate up to date information on all of our members
Please note that if you are listed as the license of record for a store you will be held responsible
for what happens in that store. Even if you have moved on.
For your own sake let us know if you change employment.

NAIT Presents Edging Lab at ABES
Alberta Business Education Service (ABES) is the new home of the NAIT Edging lab in Calgary.
After several years of planning and negotiation this new development offers a great benefit to the South
Ophthalmic Dispensing Students in Alberta.
Special thanks go to Patrick Plichon and Essilor for making this possible with the generous donation
of two sets of edging equipment.
This provides the lab with both pattern and formerless opportunities for our students.
This high standard of equipment is comparable to the standards set in the Edmonton facility by WECO.
Karl Hauck program head for the NAIT Optical Programs, Patrick Reed year one and lab teacher in both
Edmonton and Calgary and Mitch McCormick of ABES are to be commended for their timely efforts in this
project.
ABES is located at 910 - 7th Avenue. S.W. Calgary.
The Optical class room will be #250.
Please Note Lectures will also be held in this location.
There will no longer be classes held at SAIT in Calgary.

New to Council
Okay here it goes…. 20 years in the Optical industry and from
Saskatchewan originally. (try spelling that for a lifetime, yikes) I
am not politically correct or minded, so why get involved with
the association? I am interested in the growth and future of
Opticians. It seems like a good idea to lend a hand wherever
I can, since the future of this industry has an effect on us all.
Along the way I might learn a thing or two about the inner
process.

Each track will run for 40 minutes with 4 workshops running concurrently
An Interactive Way to Gain Continuing Education Credits
Issue #41 Page 14
Vision Canada West 2001
Moonraker-Corneal Mapping Workshop Is keratometry still appropriate when you can get more
information with corneal topography? Participants will arrive at an answer as they measure fellow
delegates’ corneas with standard keratomotetry as well as the more sophisticated method under the
instruction and guidance of a facilitator.

A View to a Kill-Advanced Biomicroscopy
In a workshop equipped with slit lamps, cameras and
projectors participants under Prof. Fonns guidance will be able to view specific corneal conditions and the
advanced illumination techniques that best reveal them. The participants will then have the opportunity to
match Prof. Fonn’s technique as he views and critiques the results on screen.Credits AB 2 CL/MB 1.5 CL
Very Clever, Mr. Bond-Can Your Practice Benefit from Adding a Sight Testing Component?
Traditional manual forms of sight testing to perform over-refractions have been overtaken by the advent of
automated systems. How can these systems be integrated into your practice? What are the advantages?
How expensive is it? What is the legislative status quo of sight testing opticians in Canada? This workshop
will provide an interactive demonstration of a sight test protocol, projected for viewing by all attendees
and, as well. hands-on units throughout the audience for participants to use in conjunction with the
facilitator.

Diamonds Are Forever-Integrating Lab Equipment into Your Dispensing Practice.
Looking to improve the bottom line by lowering your wholesale lens costs? Trying to compete with the 1hour dispensaries? Thinking of installing an ‘in house’ edging service? Start your research by taking this
workshop and learning from the Essilor facilitator about remote and ‘in house edging’. Technology allows
you to be more competitive, dispense more accurate product, increase profits and make better use of your
time.

Commanders’ Club-Eyewear Practice Management Software From virtual showroom to stand-alone
programs -what’s the solution for your office? Whatever level of computer literacy you have, it’s difficult
to find an optical software program that suits your style. The Systemeyes, Management Team in a Box
allows you to work with clients and build your business rather than tussle with the paper. Track buying
patterns, analyze advertising performance, keep track of your inventory, interface with accounting
programs, generate client follow-up and recall notices and much more. This workshop offers a chance to
‘play’ with the software-to evaluate whether the total concept or a single component could enhance your
practice.

Special Operative -Low Vision Workshop Some degree of vision impairment affects
approximately 3% of Canadians. Approximately 720,000 Canadians (9%) over 45 years of age report
severe visual impairment, which means they can’t recognize a friend at arm’s length or read a newspaper
even with glasses on. Whether you specialize in low vision or not, the growing numbers of seniors will
increasingly test your professional knowledge with questions about off-setting their age-related
impairments. A revolutionary LVA product, Betacom’s VisAble Video Telescope will be a feature of this
workshop along with a step-by-step primer on how to screen, counsel, select appropriate product and train
the LVA candidate.

Spymaker-Ocular Prosthetics- Developing a specialty practice can be very rewarding and can add to your
professional stature. The fitting of prosthetic eyes, scleral lenses and specialty contact lenses is in danger
of becoming a ‘lost art’. This workshop will demonstrate the techniques and procedures for making
prosthetic eyes and scleral lenses and provide participants with direction as to acquiring training.

Goldfinger-What to do When All Else Fails Want to learn some simple tricks to diffuse customer
complaints? In this workshop the participant will be introduced to some new and innovative dispensing
equipment, see demonstrations of and participate in custom adaptations such as moisture chambers,
ptosis crutches, nasal fills, 4-point rimless and plastic frame adjustments. A good refresher course for
seas oned opticians and for those more recently licensed, an introduction to specialty dispensing bench
work.
