Spring 2009 - The Norman Howard School
SPRING/SUMMER 2009
Remembering
Madeline Lilly
Make Education A Priority,
Please Designate Your
United Way Gift To NHS.
Donor Choice #365
1927–2009
Madeline Lilly first came to The Norman Howard
School (NHS) with her husband Eugene in 1980
seeking academic help for their beloved son Dick.
At that time, NHS Director, Dr. Bill Kehoe provided
the Lilly family with the analysis and reports that
helped Dick obtain his Regents Degree and be
successful at MCC. “We were very aware and
appreciative of what the school does and how
it helped Dick succeed. Madeline’s kids were
her life.” said Eugene
recently. We are
grateful that Madeline
chose to share her
life with our Norman
Howard School Family.

also the Director at Our Lady of Mercy's recent production of God Spell.
As Steve's 2005 graduation speaker, Ms. Pudetti was delighted to
catch up with Steve.
Tal Ronnen
1993 NHS Alum—Chef to the Stars
“
I have known Tal Ronnen
for many years. I found him
to be a genius in many areas
and in many ways
says NHS Teacher, Paul Wagner
Tal Ronnen, NHS Class of ’93, has made a name for himself in the vegan cooking world.
In 2007, Tal teamed up with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chrissie Hynde to open her new
vegetarian restaurant, VegiTerranean, in Ohio. Most recently, he has provided recipes for
The New York Times bestselling author Kathy Freston’s latest book, Quantum
Wellness, as well as preparing meals for Oprah Winfrey during her 21-day
cleanse. Tal is a graduate of New York City’s Natural Gourmet Institute, has
worked at top vegan restaurants in the country and also conducts master
vegetarian workshops for students and staff at several Le Cordon Bleu-affiliate
culinary schools nationwide. Tal says “Learning at NHS taught me creative ways
to work in traditional environments. I've been able to carry that with me through
different jobs over the years and it has always reminded me that there are many
different ways to achieve a goal in life and to also respect other people’s ways
of getting there.” Watch for his first book due out mid-September called Conscious Cook,
published by Harper Collins, which will contain 75 recipes with full color photos.
”
Congratulations to Kevin Jacobs!
He has been accepted in a 2 year Culinary Arts Program at Alfred State
College. "We are all very proud of him, and know that he could never have
come this far without the education he received at NHS. Please extend
our thank you to all the staff that Kevin has had throughout the years.
Thank you again for everything" said Kevin's mother Dawn LeBerth.
Staff Highlight:
Edina Fitzpatrick
Edina first walked through the doors of The Norman Howard School 21 years ago while working on her Masters
Thesis at the U of R for Computers and Education. One year later Edina was developing a software tool that
would help NHS track student problem solving strategies and scores.
In 1998, Edina once again was there spearheading the use of technology by opening our first computer lab.
With a goal to integrate technology into student learning and provide staff development opportunities, Edina
quickly moved on from Word and PowerPoint to adding EReader, Kurweil and Dragon. Students thrived with
this new assistive technology, which helped them to become more successful independent learners.Students
and faculty are thrilled with the newest technology—Smartboards. The Smartboards provide an engaging
hands-on opportunity for student learning as well as faculty professional development.
What may surprise you the most about Edina is that she always thinks she could/should be doing
more… this is an easy trap to fall into since technology moves at warp speed.
“
Edina is an integral member of the NHS professional community. She keeps us on the forefront of educational technology and is an
excellent teacher for both students and staff. All of us at the school rely on Edina’s knowledge and talents on a daily basis. Her enthusiasm
and positive energy make her one of the most highly respected faculty at the school. says Rosemary Hodges.

Sean climbs to the South Pole!
Sean Swarner will be wearing a NHS t-shirt on his next climb to the South Pole!
Swarner is a two time cancer survivor, and mountain climber who was in town for
Melissa’s Living Legacy Teen Cancer Foundation and generously took the time to visit
with our students."I was so thrilled when Sean agreed to speak to our school because
his story is not just about surviving cancer. It's about resilience in the face of life's
challenges. I can't think of a more valuable message for our students than that." said
NHS Teaching Asst., Leah Shearer. Swarner has climbed the highest peak on every
continent of the world including Mt. Everest. His goal is to complete the Adventure
Grand Slam, climb all 7 Summits (which he has already done) and then the Slam
is tacking on both the North and South Poles.

Celebrating NHS!
Spring is in the air and we are entering our final
ten weeks of the 2008-2009 school year. The last
quarter has us looking forward to two noteworthy
upcoming events.
Our annual Celebration of Success is June 10 at 7 p.m.
Students, family and friends are invited to tour the school
and view student work and projects on display. In addition,
our fifth grade puppeteers will present their rendition of
several Aesop’s fables, and our middle school students
will perform in our third annual percussion concert, which
highlights the hard work and practice they have put in throughout the year in music class. There will also be an
award ceremony to acknowledge students’ efforts and achievements in areas such as personal and academic
growth, love of books and reading, science, math, technology, resilience in the face of learning challenges, and
strong leadership skills. The evening also enables us to recognize individuals from the community who have made
significant contributions to The Norman Howard School. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to
publicly celebrate the accomplishments of our students and friends of the School.
Every year, graduation at The Norman Howard School is a unique, personalized event for our senior class. On
June 25 at 7 p.m., twenty-three young men and women will walk the stage to receive their high school diplomas.
Nine students will earn Regents or Regents with Advanced Designation diplomas. The first graduating class of
NHS was in 1984, and since that time we have graduated 307 students and have a graduation rate of 98.9%!
This is significantly higher than the graduation rate (40.1%) for students with disabilities in New York State. We
encourage you to join us in the NHS theatre to applaud our senior class!
These evenings are the culmination of the combined efforts of our students, parents, and staff. This shared
partnership is what makes our mission possible…
