Creating
Hope,
Transforming
Lives.
Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your friendship and
generous support in 2012. You may
not realize how important your gifts
are to us. We count on donations from
people like you to help fund a portion
of our programs. You can see from our
statements of Revenue and Expense on
page six that a good part of our funding
came from the government to provide
services to people in need. We also received grants from
foundations and corporations for specific projects. While
we are blessed to have this level of support, none of our
grants or contracts ever pays 100% of the actual cost
of services. As a nonprofit, we are expected to secure
enough donations to fill the gap.
By helping to fill that gap, you are walking shoulder to
shoulder with us in our daily efforts to instill hope and
transform lives. Every single donation – cash, food,
clothing, furniture, you name it – goes toward our most
important goal: helping people get back on their feet.
Last year we served nearly 22,000 people. Each one
is a real person to us, someone we get to know, facing
unimaginable challenges. We meet our clients in their
homes, in their neighborhoods, at the food pantry, and in
our shelters. We believe in our work and know, firsthand,
how much people count on us to be there for them.
We know that you believe in our work, too. I ask you to
consider helping in two ways. First, would you please
pray for the men, women and children we serve? No
one asks to be poor and no one chooses to struggle for
the basic necessities of life. Second, will you continue to
support us? We can’t do it without you.
Sincerely,
Michael F. Melara

New Americans utilizing self-directed learning programs to learn English
Opportunity Center for New Americans
Catholic Charities was awarded a grant by the New York State Department of State to open the Opportunity
Center for New Americans at its Northside CYO location in Syracuse. Staffed in large part by trained
volunteers, the center assists refugees and immigrants to attain English Language Proficiency and prepare for
citizenship and employment.
Four Refugee Resettlement Services employees completed training classes in legal immigration work and
obtained accreditation from the Bureau of Immigration Affairs (BIA). With this accreditation, Catholic Charities
of Onondaga County was recognized as a provider of immigration legal services by the BIA. The employees
assist refugees with family reunification forms, naturalization applications, and other immigration services.
Refugee Resettlement Services launched several initiatives in 2012 while resettling 551 new Americans.
Basic resettlement services include renting and furnishing an apartment before the individual or family arrives,
meeting them at the airport and transporting them to their new home, connecting them to services such as
medical care, and providing translation services, English lessons, public school registration, and orientation to
a new urban environment.
Volunteers are always welcome in our Refugee Resettlement Programs. For more information, please contact
Kate Holmes, Volunteer Coordinator, at (315) 474-7428.

Typical food packages distributed at the Downtown Food Pantry
The Downtown Food Pantry
In June 2012, Catholic Charities of Onondaga County joined forces with the Diocese of Syracuse, the
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and leaders and volunteers from several other Syracuse churches
to save a downtown food pantry that was in danger of closing. Originally founded as the Cathedral Emergency
Services Food Pantry by the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the pantry was set to close at the end
of June due to high operating costs that the parish could no longer afford. However, the pantry was heavily
utilized by people in need.
Catholic Charities of Onondaga County devised a plan to work with community volunteers to operate the
pantry. Four parishes provided significant financial support. The generosity of the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception, Church of the Immaculate Conception (Fayetteville), Pope John XXIII (Liverpool), and St. Ann’s
(Manlius) made it possible to continue operating the pantry.
The pantry serves approximately 400 families a month. Open three days a week, volunteers distribute an
average of 70 packages of food each day. Additional emergency services are also housed within the same
building. Catholic Charities of Onondaga County assists people in crisis by providing food, clothing, housing
assistance, and emergency shelter services.

Relocation Assistance
Relocation Assistance for Homeless or Housing Vulnerable Individuals and Families at Catholic Charities is comprised
of five distinct programs designed to meet the needs of those enduring a housing crisis in our community. Case
management for clients in each program is provided by 12 caseworkers and two program coordinators. A program
manager oversees all five programs.
Relocation for the Housing Vulnerable works to relocate households who have been living in housing deemed unfit
by the City of Syracuse Division of Codes Enforcement. In its second year, the program moved nearly 200 households
from unfit housing to safe, affordable, quality homes, with nearly all of them receiving temporary financial assistance in
the form of security deposits and moving/storage costs.
Housing Connections provides relocation assistance to homeless individuals, primarily men residing at the Oxford
Street Inn and men and women living outside. In 2012, 170 individuals received assistance, all of whom were moved into
their own apartments or who are now living permanently with family or friends.
The Solutions to End Homelessness Program began in October of 2012 with the aim of moving 110 homeless
individuals and families into permanent housing. Participants of STEHP are homeless and extremely low income, and
are staying at either the Dorothy Day House, Women’s Expansion Program, or are living outside; they receive intensive
case management, relocation assistance, and can also receive financial assistance to help with security deposits, rent,
and moving and storage expenses.
Homeward Connections provides relocation and prevention services to individuals and families who are in danger of
eviction or who have recently lost their housing. In 2012, 80 households were helped to relocate into new apartments.
The Supportive Services for Veteran Families program also began in October of 2012, with the goal of serving 100
Veteran Families. Participants receive intensive case management services, with the goal of obtaining permanent
housing or preventing loss of housing within 90 days. Participants can also receive temporary financial assistance for
security deposits, rental assistance, moving and storage, and sometimes even childcare and car repairs.
Catholic Charities of Onondaga County assists several hundred families who are among the most vulnerable in our
community each year. Hope for tomorrow begins with a place to call home, and a safe, affordable housing unit serves as
the foundation for a better future.

The Skaneateles Vincent House Guild’s annual
fundraising event was held June 15, 2012 at the
home of Dr. Robert Kiltz. Proceeds of $23,000
supported Vincent House summer programs
including “camperships” to enable city children to
attend Lourdes Camp. Guild members also hosted
a summer picnic in Skaneateles for children at
Vincent House. On behalf of all the children and
teens who make Vincent House their second home,
we thank these dedicated volunteers for their
commitment and support.

In-Kind Donors
Catholic Charities of Onondaga County would like
to sincerely thank the multitude of in-kind donors
who have generously given everything from diapers
to an entire household to CCOC programs in 2012.
Your donations are so frequent and generous that
we would need another booklet to list every name!
Without you, our programs would not have the
resources to serve nearly 22,000 people in need
each year. Your thoughtfulness and generosity are
truly appreciated by all.
