our mission. protecting children. preserving families. since 1915.
We protect children from abuse, neglect, and family separation, and help children overcome these
things when they do happen. Abuse and neglect are significant problems in the communities
we serve, and without help, the long-term impact on children can prevent them from living healthy,
productive lives. Some of our programs aim to keep children and families together, and others
provide a healing home for children who can’t live with their families. We have nearly a century of
experience working with children, and we know that the best way to accomplish our mission is to
work with families, whenever possible, to strengthen their ability to care for their children.

by Dr. Wayne Carson, CEO
O
ur work on the first phase of renovations at the Wichita Street Campus is nearly
complete. Four years of planning, budgeting, decision-making, and construction activity
have resulted in a campus that is more spectacular than any of us could have dreamt.
The hard work and support of many, many people have come together in a way that will
surround children, families, and staff with a beautiful and highly functional setting where we can
work hard to find solutions to their challenging struggles.
And we’ve saved the most fun part for last—the
PLAYGROUND! Imagine what a vital role our
playground will play in the success of this campus.
It will help make an exciting first impression on children
who see it and think, “This place will be fun!” It will be
a place for children to burn energy and release some
of the tension that has resulted from their struggles.
It will provide incredible opportunities for parents to
spend time with children having fun and deepening
their bond, and it will be a place for children to learn
important social skills with peers.
Think I’m being too dramatic about a simple
playground? Check the research on healing childhood
trauma. It clearly points to the importance of physical
exertion, the incredible healing power of relationships,
and the benefits of children “practicing” skills in real-life
situations, not just in therapy sessions. Yes, children
will just see this playground as a place to have fun.
But we know it is actually a place where important
healing will happen.
through. Success
would not have
been possible
without such
broad, strong
support.
With each new
child adopted
by an adoring
family, each youth
who successfully emancipates, each adult who protects
his or her children and overcomes homelessness, and
each parent who overcomes conflict with his or her
teenager, the positive impact of our combined efforts
will be felt for decades to come. We have joined hands
and our strength has elevated countless children and
families needing some help to get life back on track. It’s
incredibly humbling and I am sincerely thankful.
In this season of giving, I want to take this opportunity
to publicly thank the hundreds of people who
have played a role in making this Wichita Street
Campus Project exceed our best expectations.
It has taken countless staff and volunteer hours,
hundreds of generous donors, a dedicated and
committed board of directors, and the guidance
and expertise of professionals to see this project

Dr. Wayne Carson honored
for 25 years of service to ACH.

n May, the Board of Directors organized a reception honoring ACH’s CEO
Dr. Wayne Carson and his 25 years of service to ACH. The reception was
hosted by Val and Dub Stocker, and the party guests included current and
former board members, employees, and friends of ACH and Dr. Carson. During
the reception, the board was pleased to surprise Dr. Carson by announcing it
had raised money to name one of the play areas in
the soon-to-be-built playground on the Wichita Street
Campus in his honor. The play area will now forever be
called the Wayne K. Carson Preschool Play Area!

O
n September 20, ACH celebrated the completion of
renovations to the Rees-Jones Family Residential Building.
The building was dedicated in honor of the Rees-Jones
Family and Foundation and their generous contribution to the
Wichita Street Project. The highlight of the event was Sara Cuske,
a former client of Families Together, who shared with everyone
how the program helped her and her daughter Bella stay together
and get back on their feet.
The Families Together clients
moved in a few short weeks
later, with tears of joy in their
eyes. In January, the Rees-Jones
Building will welcome its other
occupants from the LIFE Project
(Learning Independence from
Experience).

the trials and tribulations of a girl
trying to make it on her own.
After losing her job and months of struggling to pay her rent, Sara received
an eviction notice from her apartment manager. She knew she needed help,
not just for her but for her infant daughter Bella.
Sara and Bella, a family together.
During her assessment interview for the Families Together program, we asked Sara one of our favorite questions:
“If you were to write a book about your life, what would it be called?” After thinking about it for a minute, Sara
came up with “The trials and tribulations of a girl trying to make it on her own”. A few days later Sara moved into
the Families Together program. Now she didn’t have to worry about where they would sleep tonight, now she could
focus on creating a new life for her and her daughter. Sara worked on her goals of achieving
self-sufficiency and residential stability. While in the program, Sara found a full-time job with
better hours and better pay. She was able to save up money, and just 10 months after entering the
program, Sara had met her goals, found an apartment she could afford, and graduated from the
program. She shared her story at the Rees-Jones dedication, thanking everyone for helping
her figure out how to do it on her own!
Sara receives support from Trevor Rees-Jones during her emotional remarks.

Wichita Street Campus Project update
Dear Friends,
To some adults, a playground may not seem important, but to children,
a playground opens doors to their imagination and creates endless
adventure. It’s a place to play and laugh!
For the children served by ACH Child and Family Services, a playground
is even more. It’s a refuge from abuse or neglect, a worry-free zone,
a rare opportunity to just be a kid, or a place to bond with their families.
Help us build this playground for children who need to play more
than most. Make a gift today!
Let’s Play!

give the gift of play!
ACH Child and Family Services has been serving our community
for almost 100 years, effectively preventing and treating child abuse,
neglect, and family separation. Nearly 3,000 children and families
are served by this nonprofit organization each year.
Recent renovations to ACH’s donated Wichita Street Campus have
allowed for significant program expansion and new program
development. Completion of this phase of renovations calls for a
playground in the center of the campus to provide recreational
support for the children and families living on campus and
those just visiting.
Please pay tribute to a child or children in your life
by making a gift in their honor that will bring the
joy of play to vulnerable children and families!

ACH welcomes new development staff.
I
n April, Victor Mashburn joined the staff of ACH as Chief Development Officer.
Victor’s 23+ year fundraising and development career has taken him to Texas Tech University,
The University of Iowa, and the University of Texas at Austin before he arrived in Fort Worth, where
he directed the development staffs at Texas Ballet Theater and Casa Mañana. Many of his most
rewarding fundraising accomplishments were those directly benefiting children, and he is excited to
join the staff at ACH Child and Family Services. Victor and his wife Debra are the parents of
two grown children and the proud grandparents of five wonderful grandchildren.

J
ulie Davidson is a familiar face at ACH. In addition to her service as a board member, she also serves on the
Hoot ‘n Holler event committee, and as co-chair of the Home Improvements Campaign for the Wichita Street
Campus with her husband Glenn. She also volunteers regularly in the Behavioral Care Program through the
Tuesday Night Supper Club.
What led you to ACH?
I was introduced to ACH by Wayne Carson four years ago.
I saw that Behavioral Care needed 16 dinners, one meal a
week for 16 weeks. I thought, “I can take on 16 dinners.” So I
made the commitment. I got to know the kids and the staff. I
saw the relief to the staff when I brought a meal. I saw how
committed the staff was; their careers
are caring for the kids. And I saw
the kids’ faces when I came each
week. I’ve been coming every
week ever since.
Can you describe a moment
that stands out to you in your
volunteer experience?
Hearing “Miss Julie’s here!” when I walk in the door. One little boy even once told
me, “Bringing me this
hamburger made
my day!”
What do you find rewarding about volunteering
for ACH?
The kids, they are so appreciative of EVERY day. They
pray for each other…if they’ve had a bad day, for each
of them to have a forever home. They have even made
me gifts. One child even wrapped up a library book to
give to me!
What is the most exciting thing you see going on
at ACH?
The transitional living program for youth, ages 18-21..
So many of those kids become homeless. This program
helps them get a job, keep a job, live independently and
become productive adults.
This program needs to grow and needs support.
Why is it important to you to give your time in addition
to your resources?
There is a hands-on benefit to volunteering. If I am
involved, then I can see where the money is going and
where the need is.
What advice can you give to another volunteer to help
him or her have a more enriching experience at ACH?
Take initiative to be around the kids and not to be
afraid. It is not a sad experience; it is uplifting!

holidays
t’s that time of year again! The holidays will be here before we know it, and we
need your help. We have many deserving children and families who need special
attention this holiday, and Santa can’t do it all on his own! Please consider one of the following
opportunities to brighten the holidays for a child or family in need this season.
become an ACH Angel – adopt a child or group of children.
Put a smile on the face of a child this Christmas by purchasing gifts from his or her Wish List.
To sign up, visit www.wishlist.ACHservices.org. Drop the unwrapped gifts off at ACH’s Summit Campus,
1424 Summit Avenue, Fort Worth, by Friday, December 14 for Santa’s elves to wrap.
gift card program.
Many of our parents would like to purchase gifts for their children, but do not have the resources.
With a gift card to a local store (Walmart, Target, etc.), they can experience the joy of giving to their children.
honorary and memorial gifts.
A very special way to honor family and friends, or remember a loved one, is with a special gift
to ACH. We will send a holiday card to the honoree or their family acknowledging your
tribute. A minimum of $10 per honoree or memorial is suggested. Use the enclosed
reply envelope, donate online at www.ACHservices.org, or call us at 682.432.1054
to make a donation by phone using your credit card.
donate new gifts for teens.
More than 60 percent of the children and youth served by ACH are between the ages
of 13 and 18. Please help us fulfill their Christmas wishes by donating any
of the following new items:
•
•
•

For more information about the above opportunities,

I
n May, ACH celebrated the high school graduation of five of its residents: Antwan, Esteffanie, Frank, Amber, and Julie.
All received new laptops, courtesy of a generous anonymous donor, and a copy of Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll
Go. Dinner was provided by Bonnell’s Fine Texas Cuisine, and Julie Brown, an ACH resident alumna, spoke and gave
encouraging words to the graduates. We congratulate our graduates on this milestone accomplishment, and celebrate the
next phase of their lives.

a musical evening.
O
n March 5, ACH hosted a Cliburn Community
Concert in the Julie and Glenn Davidson Family
Chapel on the Wichita Street Campus. The free
community concert featured Mariangela Vacatello, a 2009 Van
Cliburn International Piano Competition finalist. Approximately
75 ACH board members, staff, clients, and neighbors attended.
As a finalist and winner of the Internet Audience Award at
the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,
Mariangela Vacatello is in high demand for engagements
worldwide. She has performed in concert with orchestras around
the world and has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician
throughout the United States, France, Italy, the United Kingdom,
Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Croatia, and South Africa.
ACH thanks the Van Cliburn Foundation and Mariangela Vacatello for
a wonderful concert and a thoroughly enjoyable evening!

Honorary chair Russ Morton spoke about his grandfather Rusty Russell,
who formed and coached the legendary high school football team at the
Fort Worth (TX) Masonic Home for Orphans, known as the “Mighty Mites”
who captured both championships and the hearts of a Depression-era
America in the late 1920s and ‘30s. Their story, Twelve Mighty Orphans:
The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football,
told in the best-selling book by Jim Dent, is the basis of the film scheduled
