Semi and non professional grape
crushers and
destemmers - problems

Most of these grape crushers and destemmers fails to meet
the essential health and safety requirements according to
MD 98/37/EC (points: 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.5.1) and
standard EN ISO 13857 : 2008 (supersedes EN 294 : 1992,
EN 811 : 1996)

Main problem is the safety distance on the upper part
where grapes are put in the machine from the moving parts
of machine
2
Target consumer groups:
Semi and non professional grape crushers and
destemmers were designed to meet the requirements of
small wine producers and people who make wine as a
hobby.
Administrative market surveillance results:
In the years of 2008 and 2009 almost 50% semi and non
professional grape crushers didn’t fulfil requirements from
Machinery Directive 98/37/EC.
3
In 2009 Market Inspectorate of the Republic of
Slovenia had sampled one grape crusher and
destemmer in the Institute of Occupational Safety in
Ljubljana. We had sampled the grape crusher and
destemmer which is usually for sale in our market.
The result is shown in the slides below.

The following grape crusher and destemmer has been
sampled :

Declaration of conformity published by the producer GRIFO
taken from the internet (not from the sampling machine)
8
In the sampling machine the following major deficiencies
were found :

Stability : Machine are not accompanied by means of attachment to the tub for grapes, set
out in chapter 4.3 Installation machine on the tub, in the Instruction manual for use and
maintenance.

Protective sides are incomplete and damaged (missing lateral sides, screws for mounting

and consent, the longitudinal sides of the elements are damaged) picture 1.
Not available information on the adequacy of installed materials coming into contact with foodstuffs.

Risk related to the moving parts and consequently the risk of a loss event is not
adequately prevented:
a. Enable access with the upper limbs - finger, to a rotating shaft of the stalk remover on
the site of ejection grape through the net (Figure 2)
b. Enable access to the upper limbs – hand, to the site of ejection for cities to stalk (Figure
3),
c. Enable access with the upper limbs across the collection tank to the feeding side of the
stalk remover (rotating shaft) Figure 4.

It can be concluded that the sampled grape crusher and
destemmer had not meet all the EHSR from Annex I of
Machinery Directive and the producer also had not complied
with all requirements of those standards mentioned in the
Declaration of conformity. Therefore safeguard clause for this
machine will be issued in the follow- up.

Semi and non-professional grape crushers and destemmers –
safety distances
MD 98/37/EC, ANNEX I, point 1.4.1, 1.4.2
EN ISO 13857
Most of the models do not use this standard

Semi and non-professional grape crushers and destemmers - facts
and proposals for the future
Inform the manufacturers.
For this specific group of grape crushers and destemmers
there are no harmonized EN standards who can help
producers to make a safe product.
Producers could use only standard EN ISO 13857 and
Machinery Directive.
In the meantime which actions can be taken by Member
States?
