2014-2015 Annual Report - Our Lady of Fatima School
It has been said about our Jesus that, “to know Him is to love Him!”
And isn’t it true? The more we get to know Jesus—the real Jesus and not what the
secular media has made of Him-then the more we can only fall in love with Him. Why?
Because Jesus tells it like it is, but He does it with love and compassion. He doesn’t
compromise the Truth, which sometimes disturbs the comfortable. But He always
remains sensitive to the person. A humble person gets His method; a proud person
walks away in protest.
I think today, more than ever, the Church must be crystal clear about what she
teaches. If not, faith is weakened. And we do not have to apologize to the world for
what we teach and believe. We have the remedy for the aches and pains of so many
lives—it’s Jesus, and the Church He founded, and the Sacraments for which He gave
His life to give us! This is how we see the world-with Catholic eyes. And this is our aim
and goal for the children of Fatima—to form them to see the world with a faith vision
and to pray for others with a Catholic heart. We teach what we do because we love the
children. We love their immortal souls, and we want them to one day shine as radiant
as the sun for all eternity!
And so, behind our efforts, behind our teaching, behind our coaching, behind our
decision making is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the real Christ. Thank you for supporting
our efforts, and for supporting what you love—JESUS and all that His life means for us.
Why? Because to know Him is to love Him!
— Rev. Michael J. Russo
Our Lady of Fatima School continues to thrive due to the stakeholders who support what they
love - their faith, children, school, community, and family! Support is easily seen in many areas of the
school environment. The students at Our Lady of Fatima School continue to uphold an above average
composite on national criteria-based tests, continuing to make a consistent climb over the past few
years. Our parents, grandparents and family members take time out of their busy schedules to spend
prayer time with their students in the Adoration Chapel. The administration, faculty and staff of Our
Lady of Fatima School continue to meet standards of excellence set by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools. Community businesses and organizations invest in Our Lady of Fatima School
by offering grants, serving as educational speakers, making donations for students, and offering many
other services beneficial to our school community. Parents, grandparents, and other family members
participate in making Our Lady of Fatima School successful by way of contributing to an active Parent/
Teacher Support Club, Athletic Booster Club, Foundation Committee, and Alumni Association.
The support that the school receives is not only by way of financial assistance, but also by way of
giving encouragement and positive feedback to the school community.
Our Lady of Fatima School was able to use the support received during the 2013-2014 school year
to continue to better our already existing school of excellence. Teachers and staff members were
educated on differentiated teaching strategies in order to help them better meet the needs of all of
their students. National and local conferences were attended by administration and faculty focusing on
technology, mathematics, anti-bullying strategies, and many other fields of study. A national speaker,
Mrs. Steph Jenson, spoke to the students, faculty, and parents on anti-bullying strategies, strategies
that can be used both inside and outside the classroom, at a professional development meeting held
on the school campus.
Support clubs at Our Lady of Fatima School arrange opportunities to enhance the Catholic
education provided to our students. These organizations make events, such as field day, the school
talent show, and educational hands-on symposiums possible. They also provide social opportunities
for former OLF students to come back on campus to reminisce and share their stories of success.
In addition, the school library is able to provide the students with the latest titles and most current
data bases, which enhances student research and provides more choices for pleasure reading.
The purchase of the most up-to-date athletic and physical education equipment is made possible
by our athletic support organizations.
On behalf of the Our Lady of Fatima School student body,
faculty and staff, and myself, I would like to express our deepest
gratitude for supporting what you love!!
— Mrs. Duos
I have been a part of the Fatima family for many years. The thing I love
most is the feeling of community. Students, parents, teachers, administration and
staff work together to provide the best learning environment possible.
The school is moving forward in academics with differentiated instruction.
With our youngest students, we use our iPads and laptop computers daily to provide
differentiated instruction. The apps and programs help us tailor instructions to meet
individual needs based on the developmental levels and interests of our students.
A child’s spiritual life is of the utmost importance at OLFS. One of my favorite
things about going to Mass is hearing our Pre-K students sing. They sing the new
songs they are learning with all their might. It always brings a smile to my face and a
tear to my eyes. It’s really something! I cannot imagine working anywhere else!
Debbie Guidroz
Pre-K Teacher, 1982 OLFS Graduate
For eleven years, Fatima has been part of our
family’s daily life. Our sons, Cole, Connor and
Cooper, attended Fatima since kindergarten, and
we’ve witnessed many positive experiences the
school has provided them. From tireless efforts
by their teachers, to the administration’s push to
expand technology in the classrooms, they have
had an exceptional environment to learn and grow.
Our oldest son recently graduated from Fatima,
moving on to high school. The transition has been
relatively easy for him, thanks to the preparation
he received at Fatima. We feel fortunate to have
the opportunity for our children to receive an
education through this school. We’re donors to the
Foundation because we want to do whatever we
can to help Fatima continue its legacy of providing
quality Catholic education now and in the future.
The technology infrastructure was updated
to include an increased number of wireless access
points, making the classroom a more mobile
one. With this new wireless capability, students
were able to further their studies and meet
differentiated academic goals through the use
of technology. Junior high religion students were
able to gain a better understanding of the stations
of the cross by walking from station to
station in Chance Hall and using their
laptops and QR codes to travel Jesus’
journey to the cross. This mobility gave
teachers the ability to use teaching
strategies that meet the needs
of students who excel with this
style of learning.
