Connecting all generous people to the causes they care about Letter from the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dear Friends, Thank you for your continued trust and confidence in YOUR Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA)! It is our pleasure to serve you. CFA is a donor-centric, entrepreneurial foundation whose core purpose is to connect all generous people to the causes they care about. CFA benefits our communities, region and state through philanthropy by offering a service provision that is three-fold: (1) trusted stewardship of charitable resources, (2) expert services and (3) civic leadership excellence. Established in 2000, CFA has cumulatively attracted $128 million in charitable gifts and has made $68 million in donor-directed grant distributions. In 2013, CFA was recognized, for the second year, among the Top 100 community foundations in the country as #3 Most Active Grantmaker, #72 Most Gifts Per Capita and #74 Most Activity. This national recognition confirms we are in pursuit of CFA’s core purpose and is a great testament to the generosity of our communities. We are especially excited about the terrific growth of our Financial Advisor Program and the launch of the Acadiana Mega Raffle (www.AcadianaMegaRaffle.com) in 2014. This Report to the Community highlights some of our top accomplishments and financial highlights from 2013. We thank local artist, Julie Breaux, for allowing us to feature her beautiful artwork in our office and throughout this report. CFA is custodian of these charitable and philanthropic resources that help generous donors meet their objectives immediately and in perpetuity. This platform affords the creation of legacies for individuals, families, groups, companies, other foundations and nonprofits that can include multiple generations. Financial Advisors Program Generally, donors select an investment strategy for the assets of the Funds established at CFA. An exception to this is CFA’s Financial Advisor Program. The Financial Advisor Program is an option for donors that prefer to maintain their trusted financial advisors or firms to manage the investments of the assets in their Funds. The Financial Advisor Program is an option for donors that prefer to maintain their trusted financial advisors or firms to manage the investments of the assets in their Funds. CFA provides a sound and efficient option for my clients that have a philanthropic inclination. CFA’s stellar reputation and expert service provision is perfect for my clients that also want to retain my professional advisement. — J. David Strother, CFP AIFA, DSF Wealth Management, LLC The Foundation works with professional advisors and their clients to meet their tax and charitable goals. Professional advisors maintain the core relationship with their clients and retain a fee for their services. Donors have secure, online access to their accounts and can allow read-only access to professional advisors as they choose. CFA’s Financial Advisor Program grew substantially in 2013. The number of Financial Advisor Program relationships grew by almost 300%, while the amount of assets in separately-invested accounts grew by almost 4,000%! 3 2013 Foundation Highlights The 2013 Leaders In Philanthropy Awards Luncheon set a record with almost 750 attendees. 2013 Leaders In Philanthropy Awards Luncheon CFA held its third-annual Leaders In Philanthropy Awards Luncheon on Friday, November 15th (National Philanthropy Day) at the Cajundome Convention Center. A geographic affiliate provides a unique vehicle to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of a particular parish. If you are interested in learning more about establishing an affiliate in your parish, please contact the Foundation at 337.769.4840. 6 Iberia Parish Foundation Highlights New Iberia City Park Playground Enhancement Fund Established in 2007, the Iberia Parish Foundation, an affiliate of Community Foundation of Acadiana, and CFA’s first affiliate, enjoys local involvement by a local volunteer Board of Directors that determine philanthropic objectives for discretionary dollars from its family of named discretionary Funds – to benefit all things Iberia Parish. The Iberia Parish Foundation supports the arts, education, community development projects and the local culture and tourism industry. “The Iberia Parish Foundation allows us the unique opportunity to focus on the charitable and philanthropic needs of our community. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, we are honored to be able to further enhance an already wonderful community by supporting important projects such as the New Iberia City Park playground enhancement and the hydroponic garden co-ops.” — Mike Wattigny, Iberia Parish Foundation Chair, 2013 The New Iberia City Park Playground Enhancement Fund was started and run by a citizen/volunteer-driven board of locals that focuses on revitalizing parks and improving the quality of life in the New Iberia community. The group raised an impressive $210,000 from the community to install playground equipment to enhance the existing city park. Donations were received from the community including Bristow Group, the leading provider of helicopter services to the worldwide offshore energy industry, that generously donated $80,000 and the Junior Women’s Civic Club, Les Jeunes Amis, that contributed $25,000. The play equipment was installed in November 2013 and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to commemorate the event. Operation Progress Operation Progress: Moving Iberia Forward is a community-wide initiative that is facilitated by the Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce. This initiative is comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders who are taking responsibility for improving neighborhood development, the education system, community amenities, local infrastructure and many other projects. Iberia Parish Foundation board members attended the planning meetings in the spring and helped create the Operation Progress document. The Chamber invited local businesses and members of the community to show their support by signing the document at a Stakeholder Signing Ceremony on July 30, 2013. Four Iberia Parish Foundation Board members signed the document and the foundation continues to be involved in this strategic endeavor to enhance Iberia Parish. Iberia Parish Foundation Awards Over $18,000 to the Acadiana Dragon Boat Festival The Iberia Parish Foundation (IPF) awarded $18,625 to the Acadiana Dragon Boat Festival on March 21, 2013. This grant was made to increase the community’s awareness of the Festival and to attract tourists to New Iberia. Iberia Parish Foundation Funds Hydroponic Garden Co-Ops Iberia Parish Foundation helped to fund three hydroponic garden co-ops in Iberia Parish through the Fund for Gulf Communities which provides programs and services to assist those adversely impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The project, marketed as “BestLife Iberia Certified Gardens” grows fresh, seasonal produce, including heirloom tomatoes, varieties of lettuce and other greens, along with other vegetables and herbs year-long by using twenty-first century farming techniques that feature high-density, vertical hydroponic gardening systems. The Iberia Development Foundation (IDF) administered the grant. Please visit www.cfacadiana.org/Iberia for more information. 7 St. Mary Parish Foundation Highlights St. Mary Parish Foundation Awards $10,000 to Schools The St. Mary Parish Foundation (SMPF) awarded a total of $10,000 to five schools in St. Mary Parish in March of 2013 to promote music and arts culture in schools. Meeting with the Mayors Established in 2010, the St. Mary Parish Foundation, an affiliate of Community Foundation of Acadiana, enjoys local involvement by a local volunteer Board of Directors that determine philanthropic objectives for discretionary dollars from its family of named discretionary Funds – to benefit all things St. Mary Parish. The St. Mary Parish Foundation’s philanthropic focus is education and community enrichment and development. “The St. Mary Parish Foundation appreciates being a partner in the community and supporting projects and organizations that enhance our quality of life. We are thankful for the community’s continued support and generosity which enabled us to grant over $20,000 to schools in St. Mary Parish.” — Donna Tesi, M.D., St. Mary Parish Foundation Chair, 2013 St. Mary Parish Foundation invited mayors from St. Mary Parish to their meeting on Thursday, September 12, 2013. In attendance were Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi of Morgan City; Mayor Louis Ratcliff of Berwick; Mayor Raymond Harris, Jr. of Franklin and Councilman John Rentrop from Patterson on behalf of Mayor Rodney Grogan. Throughout the country, municipalities and local government are forced to be more and more creative in meeting the demands and expectations of their communities. Community Foundation of Acadiana is committed to serving south Louisiana and its terrific communities in new and innovative ways. Jazzin’ on the River Gala St. Mary Parish Foundation’s 2013 gala, Jazzin’ on the River, was held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at Nicobella’s on Front Street in Morgan City. There was a silent auction with paintings from local artists and jewelry from Mignon Faget. Tickets and other proceeds benefitted St. Mary Parish Foundation’s philanthropic objectives. St. Mary Parish Foundation Awards Nearly $12,000 to Schools St. Mary Parish Foundation awarded nearly $12,000 to nine schools in St. Mary Parish in December of 2013 to purchase novels for every middle school student in the parish. The following schools received an award: B. Edward Boudreaux Middle School, Berwick Junior High School, Centerville High School, Franklin Junior High School, Morgan City Junior High School, Patterson Junior High, Hanson Memorial High School, Central Catholic High School and Holy Cross Elementary School. With a greater emphasis on reading in schools, the school system notified the Foundation of a need for additional novels for reading classes in middle schools. The purpose of St. Mary Parish Foundation is to fund programs which broadly impact St. Mary Parish and enhance the quality of life in the parish. St. Mary Parish Foundation Board Chair Dr. Donna Tesi said, “These awards align with our mission to help enhance the quality of life in St. Mary Parish. They will help us to improve our schools, our children and ultimately, our community. We are honored to have the community’s support through annual fundraisers to be able to offer these awards.” Please visit www.cfacadiana.org/StMary for more information. 8 2013 Featured Funds LEGACY CFA | 2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | FEATURED FUNDS The David R. Caillouet Memorial Fund “When I was 6 and my younger sister was 2, our father was killed in an accident while working offshore. As an adult, I have grown to appreciate the tremendous sacrifices my parents made to send us to Mount Carmel and Vermilion Catholic schools in our hometown of Abbeville. The David R. Caillouet Memorial Fund will provide scholarships to students in need of assistance attending Mount Carmel and Vermilion Catholic. Further, the Fund will benefit other worthy causes and entities. All of this is done to memorialize and honor my father; all to further his legacy.” A – Annie N. Caillouet Doug and Claire Ashy, Sr. Family Fund “Lafayette is a great community. We have been fortunate to make a good living and raise our children while being involved in those things that matter to us. Our Donor Advised Fund at CFA provides a platform that affords flexibility. We make regular tax-deductible contributions and we determine the timing and purposes of our philanthropy.” FLEXIBILITY – Doug and Claire Ashy, Sr. White Mountain Buffalo Fund “An unusual taxable event provided an opportunity for me to really enhance my charitable and philanthropic giving and interests. CFA provided the ease and anonymity I was seeking. My Fund’s assets are separately-managed via my long-time trusted financial advisor. CFA is now part of my team of advisors that will help professionally steward my philanthropic interests – immediately and in perpetuity. I’m excited about the possibilities.” – Anonymous ANONYMITY The Apollo Theater / James Brown Project Fund CREATIVITY Y CFA | 2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | FEATURED FUNDS “The Apollo Theater is a national treasure that has made a significant impact on the development of American culture and its popularity around the world. Since introducing the first Amateur Night contest in 1934, the Apollo has played a major role in cultivating artists and in the emergence of innovative musical genres. The Theater’s new artistic vision builds on its legacy with programming that has music as its core, driving large scale and more intimate music, dance and theater presentations. The Apollo Theater could not have been more pleased with its partnership with Lafayette, Louisiana to develop the James Brown: Get On The Good Foot – A Celebration in Dance production prior to its world premiere in October of 2013. We are grateful to Jackie Lyle for her vision in making this connection as well as Mayor-President Joey Durel who readily embraced this collaboration. Community Foundation of Acadiana was an essential and valuable local partner that served as the vehicle to receive tax-deductible contributions to make this public-private collaboration a reality.” – Mikki Shepard, Executive Producer, The Apollo Theater 11 CFA | 2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | FEATURED FUNDS New Iberia City Park Playground Enhancement Fund “The New Iberia Parks and Recreation Department and Parks and Recreation Commission strive to provide quality recreation to citizens of all ages. The volunteer members of the Commission sought to enhance the playground in City Park for families with young children. This ambitious project realized immediate and broad credibility because of its association with Iberia Parish Foundation, an affiliate of Community Foundation of Acadiana. The City of New Iberia gained a sound partner in attracting private dollars to enhance a significant jewel in the community” – Mayor Hilda Curry, City of New Iberia and Angela Cestia, Parks and Recreation Commission PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP Barbara M. Brown Memorial Scholarship “Acadiana High School, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and education were three very important things to Barbara. Having taught at Acadiana High for 34 of her 37 years in education, we were devastated at her death in 2012. Barbara and I shared 37 years of marriage together, for which I am eternally grateful. Because we met at then-USL, and because education was so important to her, the most logical way to honor her was via a scholarship Fund that would benefit a student graduating from Acadiana High School that would go to UL and major in education. CFA provided the perfect platform to wed these objectives. Additionally, I have the added benefit of retaining my trusted financial advisor to manage the Fund’s assets. The first award was granted at Senior Night in May of 2014; I look forward to continuing this legacy to my wife through this scholarship Fund.” SCHOLARSHIP – Bruce Brown E TE CFA | 2013 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY | FEATURED FUNDS MISSION Mission Housing Ministries Fund “Five years ago, we were invited to participate in a mission trip to Comitancillo, Guatemala and were connected with a 501 (c)(3) Florida-based charity, Mission Housing Ministries. The trip changed our lives and we developed friendships and relationships with families and children there. The needs of the children really had a profound impact on me. Despite their need for basic necessities, they were filled with joy and love. We established our Fund at Community Foundation of Acadiana (CFA) to benefit the Mission Housing Ministries organization to benefit families and children in Guatemala. We held an event in December of 2013 to benefit the fund and raised over $8,000. The proceeds will build tin shed housing for single parent mothers and will provide scholarships to about 50 children. CFA has a due diligence process that brings validity to local fundraising projects. That validity makes people more comfortable donating to a local foundation, thereby increasing the comfort level and donations. CFA also made the process easier and helped us achieve some amazing things in only a matter of weeks. “ – Erick and Ashley Knezek EXPERT SERVICES LAGCOE Education Fund “Our partnership with Community Foundation of Acadiana has enabled LAGCOE to expand its scope to better serve the oil and gas industry that has supported our communities for decades and to assist in developing and educating the future workforce of our industry. We appreciate the support our CFA partnership brings to the LAGCOE Education Fund, the annual LAGCOE Sporting Clays Tournament and the LAGCOE Future Energy Professionals scholarship.” – Angela Cring, Executive Director, LAGCOE 13 2013 Fund Listing Community Foundation of Acadiana offers a variety of funds to satisfy various and multiple charitable objectives.
