Valade’s generous gift further strengthens SJH&MC’s Cardiology and Orthopedic programs
Gretchen C. Valade has made a transformational gift to St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC) to benefit the Cardiology and Orthopedic programs, two important areas
she previously supported generously.
Eighty percent of the gift will create an endowment to support the Structural and Endovascular Heart Program within Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. The remaining portion
of the gift will support an Advanced Imaging Program for Orthopedics, the newest Center of Excellence at St. John Providence Health System.
Mrs. Valade’s past gifts provided funds for the Gretchen C. Valade Cardiovascular Hybrid Operating Room and Structural Heart Program, Michigan’s first Certificate of Needapproved cardiovascular hybrid operating room, and a da Vinci® Si HD Surgical System, the most advanced robotic surgical device for minimally invasive cardiovascular procedures.
About 1,000 cases have been successfully completed in SJH&MC’s Cardiovascular Hybrid Operating Room. This includes more than 50 clinical trial cases for the Medtronics
CoreValve® System, a minimally invasive option for patients with symptomatic, severe aortic stenosis
who are at high risk or are ineligible for open heart surgery.
“I’ve received several letters from very grateful patients who said they would have died if not for the
minimally invasive heart surgery available at St. John,” Mrs. Valade says. “It’s great to know my gift has
made such a difference for people who aren’t eligible for open heart surgery.”
Mrs. Valade’s latest gift for the heart program is in appreciation of the exceptional work by SJH&MC
physicians, specifically Thomas LaLonde, MD, Chief, Cardiology and Cardiovascular Services; Sanjay
Batra, MD; Thomas Davis, MD, as well as the entire Cardiology staff.
“I’ve known many of the St. John cardiologists for some time,” Mrs. Valade says. “They’re highly trained
specialists who work very well together as a team. My conversations with Dr. LaLonde about the heart
program’s needs led to my most recent gift.”
The portion of Mrs. Valade’s latest gift that supports the Advanced Imaging Program for Orthopedics
also recognizes Christopher Lee, MD, Chief, Orthopedic Surgery, and the entire Orthopedics staff.
“I had hip replacement in 2011 at St. John, and I couldn’t have received better care,” Mrs. Valade says.
“They had me up and running right away. Their exceptional care inspired me to make this gift.
“I’ve never known a hospital with nicer physicians, nurses and staff. They’re cheerful and friendly,
and their demeanor always makes you feel better. That’s why I seek ways to help the hospital. It’s very
flattering to know my support has helped enhance what is already a great community resource.”
A lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mrs. Valade is chair of Carhartt, Inc., CEO of Mack Avenue
Records, and owner of the Dirty Dog Jazz Café, the Morning Glory Coffee Shop and Bakery, and
Capricious Boutique. She firmly believes in community support—in addition to her donations to
SJH&MC, she created an endowment for the Detroit Jazz Festival.

ITC Holdings Corp. supports robotic surgery simulator to enhance patient safety
St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS) has always seized opportunities to remain at the forefront of
leading-edge medical treatments and technology. Advanced equipment and procedures also demand optimal
patient safety. That’s why SJPHS recently purchased a state-of-the-art robotic surgery simulator to help
train physicians to perform minimally invasive robotic hysterectomies. A generous gift from Novi-based ITC
Holdings Corp. made the purchase possible.
The simulator is part of the Vattikuti Women’s Robotic Surgery Institute at Providence Hospital in Southfield.
Providence is the regional market leader in gynecologic robotic procedures. Lakshmi Gavini, MD, Chief of
Gynecology, Gynecological Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery, leads the Robotic Surgery Institute.
“Simulation training is an innovative, important tool for medical education,” Dr. Gavini says. “In the past,
surgeons learned by observing their peers and by performing actual hysterectomies. The robotic surgery
simulator allows new surgeons and residents to learn the procedure in a risk-free setting before performing
it on patients. The simulator requires the users to mimic the same steps taken to perform an actual
hysterectomy. It helps physicians gain proficiency and understand possible complications, enhancing
patient safety.”

Some of the simulator’s advanced features are full-length, 3-D surgical modules; a multi-level curriculum
with various levels of difficulty; and portability, so users can train without using
valuable hospital space.
Expanded Surgical and Procedural Skills Training Center opening in 2015
Surgeons and residents from Providence and Providence Park Hospitals are
training on the simulator. The impact on women’s health in the Southfield and
Novi areas will be significant—a fact that resonates with ITC Holdings leadership.
A campaign is under way to raise $2.5 million for a state-of-the-art Surgical and Procedural
Skills Training Center (SPSTC), which will combine new and existing training facilities and
technology in a 6,800-square-foot facility at Providence Hospital.
“The robotic surgery simulator is an important tool that will impact the health
of women in our community,” says Dan Oginsky, ITC Holdings Senior Vice
President and General Counsel, and a Providence Health Foundation Board of
Trustees member. “Training is an important part of our company operations, so
we understand the need for the simulator and how it will help train surgeons
to conduct a critical surgical procedure. ITC Holdings has a strong partnership
with St. John Providence Health System and Providence Health Foundation.
Supporting the simulator is a great way for us to address a specific health
care need. We hope our gift inspires other area businesses to support St. John
Providence and community health.”
Simulation training is a vital component of the medical education program for practicing
physicians, residents, medical students, nurses and other health professionals. Through
highly technical, realistic simulation in a multidisciplinary setting, participants hone their
skills through hands-on experience, helping to provide safe, patient-centered care.
“The simulator is helping us provide patients with optimal care,” says Dr. Gavini.
“We’re very grateful to ITC Holdings for understanding the importance of
physician education and patient safety and for supporting our vision for the
future of health care.”

In addition to offering advanced training tools like the new robotic surgery simulator, the
SPSTC will house:
• a procedural skills training room equipped with task trainers and high-fidelity
simulation models
• a virtual reality surgical skills training room
• a simulated operating room and two team-training rooms that can be used as delivery
rooms, emergency exam rooms or other clinical settings
• exam rooms for assessing clinical skills on simulated patients
• conference rooms to debrief training sessions
• a large room for workshops and conferences

Major gift from Newland Medical Associates enhances cancer care services
Ronna Katzman was out shopping one afternoon in December 2012 when she received a surprising telephone call from her doctor’s office.
“I had just had a mammogram,” says Ronna, a retired special education teacher from West Bloomfield. “I expected it to be normal like my past mammograms. But I was asked to
return right away. More tests showed a large tumor in one breast and some smaller tumors in the other. A biopsy confirmed stage IV breast cancer. I was in complete shock. I felt fine,
and no one in my family had ever had cancer.”
Ronna chose to receive care from Howard Terebelo, DO, a medical oncologist with Newland Medical Associates in Bingham Farms. Many of its physicians have privileges with
St. John Providence Health System hospitals.
Tests showed Ronna has a gene mutation called BRCA-2, which puts women at higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer. After an initial round of chemotherapy, Ronna opted for a
double mastectomy, which was performed at St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi last July. Ronna’s fight continued, as further tests showed the cancer had spread to her liver.
Doctors also discovered she had kidney cancer. Providence Cancer Center Radiologist Denis Lincoln, MD, performed cryoablation to destroy those tumors last July and October.
“Ronna had a lot going on, but she’s a fighter and is now cancer-free,” Dr. Terebelo says. “We continue to monitor her carefully and watch for cancer in her ovaries.”
Ronna says the outstanding physical and spiritual care the Providence Cancer Center provides were key to her recovery.
“Linda Bender, my oncology social worker at the Providence Cancer Center, helped me deal
with cancer emotionally,” Ronna says. “A nutritionist adapted my diet, and a physical therapist
helped improve my range of motion. I also saw a meditation therapist, who helped me handle
the claustrophobia that comes with MRIs and CT scans. I was also inspired by the group therapy
sessions with other cancer patients and survivors.”
Newland Medical Associates helped enhance the exceptional patient care offered at the
Providence Cancer Center by making a generous lead gift in 2013 to support a $10 million
expansion and renovation of the facility. The project has resulted in top-quality equipment,
technology, services and surroundings that match the extraordinary level of care for which
Providence is known.
“We have a close working relationship with the Providence Cancer Center,” Dr. Terebelo says.
“The hospital puts a lot of faith and trust in us, and we have a strong partnership in cancer care.
We made the contribution to help meet the community’s needs. Between our work and the
Providence Cancer Center’s enhancements, we’ve been able to boost the quality of cancer care
for patients in our area.”

Ronna has resumed her active lifestyle and says she feels great. In the spring, she participated in a
cancer fundraising walk at the Detroit Zoo.
“I
“I am so blessed to have had such great care at the Providence Cancer Center,” she says. “The
staff is amazing. Everyone there, from the person who greets you at the door to the doctors,
nurses and social workers, is inspirational. I couldn’t have chosen a better place.”

Donations from grateful patients, volunteers and physicians streamline emergency care
When Henry Ford Hospital-Warren closed abruptly in March 2012, the Emergency Center at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital
(SJMOH) faced a serious problem: how to care for an immediate 33 percent increase in patient visits.
“We suddenly became the sole hospital serving Warren and the surrounding communities,” says Antonio Bonfiglio, MD, SJMOH
Medical Director, Emergency Services. “As a result, we went from seeing about 140 to 200 patients a day in the Emergency Center.
The area wasn’t designed to handle the higher volume. We simply didn’t have the space. Patients were literally lined up out
the door.”
Although SJMOH increased its Emergency Center staff to match the increase in patient visits, space remained cramped. Then
longtime Warren residents Mr. and Mrs. Leo Deutschmann made expansion a reality with a generous $1 million gift—one of the
largest ever made to SJMOH. Their gift is in appreciation of the care they received over the years at the hospital.
“The timing of the Deutschmanns’ gift was incredible,” Dr. Bonfiglio says. “It was an answered prayer that has made a world of
difference for our patients.”
The gift supported a 1,500-square-foot expansion that frees up the main area of the Emergency Center for patients with serious
illnesses and injuries. Lower acuity patients now enter a “fast track” area where they are quickly treated and discharged.

“The expansion allowed us to focus our attention and
resources on patients who need the most attention while meeting the needs of lower acuity patients,”
Dr. Bonfiglio says. “We’ve also instituted process improvements to address how we evaluate and manage
patients. Besides having more space, we’ve made our daily operations more efficient.”
Other generous support, which made the Emergency Center enhancements possible, includes $200,000
from the St. John Macomb Hospital Auxiliary, which designated proceeds from the hospital gift shop,
coffee shop and vendor sales. The physicians of Diagnostic Radiology Consultants, PC, also gave $50,000.
“We’re elated to see how much our gift has helped the Emergency Center,” says St. John Macomb Hospital
Auxiliary President Sallie Hock. “The expansion has created a better atmosphere for patients and staff.
Patients receive treatment more quickly, and the staff works under less pressure and tension. That makes a
big difference.”
Kevin O’Brien, MD, a partner with Diagnostic Radiology Consultants, says his physician group’s gift stemmed
from its close and loyal partnership with SJMOH.
“We’ve served the hospital for more than 50 years and pride ourselves on that long-standing relationship,”
Dr. O’Brien says. “Knowing the Emergency Center was so overwhelmed, my fellow partners and I decided
to help. We’re glad we could contribute to improving patient turnaround time and enhancing customer
satisfaction. The hospital can now better serve the community.”

“We’re incredibly grateful for the generous gifts that allowed us to address the needs of our patients,

sitting next to a person having a stroke. Today, we’re providing care efficiently, thoroughly and in a
timely manner.”

Hospital fundraising events support healthy newborns
Thanks to the generous support of donors in the St. Clair area, expectant mothers have extra
assurance of delivering a healthy baby.
Fundraising events hosted by St. John River District Hospital (SJRDH) supported the purchase
of seven Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) systems. Obstetricians/Gynecologists use EFMs
to assess the well-being of a baby in the uterus. The system can be used as needed any time
during pregnancy, or continuously during labor, to ensure normal delivery of a healthy baby.

“The EFM system isn’t just for clinical management—it also provides reassurance that the
pregnancy is progressing well and the baby is safe,” says Blake Kutsche, MD, an Obstetrician/
Gynecologist at SJRDH. “The system provides heartbeat readings, follows uterus contraction
patterns and records other vital patient stats. This information helps determine if the baby is
healthy or in distress, if the mother’s labor pattern is adequate, and if a cesarean section
is necessary.”

Joyce Kasperski, RN, SJRDH Clinical Nursing Director, says the EFM system replaces older
electronic equipment that is not compatible with electronic medical record systems.
“Many of our physicians also work with doctors at St. John Hospital and Medical Center,”
Joyce says. “It’s beneficial to have electronic EFM records in case one of our patients has a
complication and needs to be transferred to the other hospital where specialty services are
available. The system ensures patient safety and record continuity.”

SJRDH is also preparing to launch a system that allows doctors to access EFM data remotely on
their smartphones.
“Remote access will be great for the occasions when I’m not in residence at the hospital,” Dr. Kutsche says. “With the older system, if I wasn’t at the hospital and needed to see a
fetal heart rate, a nurse would photocopy the paper strip and fax it to me. Soon, I’ll be able to upload that information on my smartphone and obtain a continual heart rate reading.
I’ll be able to monitor the baby’s safety anywhere, anytime.”
Three fundraising events supported the EFM purchase: the 35th and 36th annual St. John River District Hospital Golf Outings (net proceeds of more than $46,000) and the
2013 SJRDH annual dance (net proceeds of $38,000).
“When I deliver a baby, I always note that the child will be a member of the community for 50 or more years,” Dr. Kutsche says. “These newborns will eventually take care of us as we
get older, as well as raise their own families. They have their whole life ahead of them, and it’s important that they enter the world as healthy as possible. The EFM system is a great
investment in the health of our community, and I’m very grateful to everyone who helped raise funds to support the purchase.”

Flinn Foundation grant provides new treatments for Behavioral Medicine patients
St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS) Behavioral Medicine patients dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues are learning more skills for making effective life
decisions, thanks to a generous $200,000 grant from the Ethel and James Flinn Foundation.
Grant funds support clinician training in Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) treatment modalities, specifically Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
Consistent exposure to DBT skills helps patients effectively manage life events, improves their ability to interact effectively with others, and empowers them to make positive
lifestyle changes.
“EBP treatment modalities are based on solid research—there is evidence behind them that supports how we care for individual patients,” says Deb Edford, NP, SJPHS Nurse
Educator, Behavioral Health. “DBT helps individuals regulate their emotions. It’s a treatment option for borderline personality disorders, depression, substance abuse and eating
disorders. MI is a technique therapists can use to elicit information from patients in a way that’s non-judgmental and collaborative. It helps people explore and resolve their
ambivalence about changing health-related behaviors.”
Behavioral Medicine social workers, psychologists, therapists, nurses, substance abuse counselors, physicians and mental health technicians are already receiving DBT and MI training.
Starting soon, all SJPHS Behavioral Medicine patients will receive EBP programs as part of their individual treatment plans.
“Our goal is to train all our staff members in EBP and offer these programs throughout the Behavioral Medicine system,” Deb says. “We believe we’ll see improved patient outcomes
as a result of these treatment modalities. We’ll use two specific evidence-based tools to assess the level of improvement.
“We want to offer the very best to patients facing serious mental illness and substance abuse.
To do that, we need to keep our clinicians up to date on the best evidence-based practices.
We’re very thankful to the Flinn Foundation for providing the funds to support EBP training.
The foundation is a huge partner in helping us improve individuals’ lives.”
An outpatient staff member who attended the two-day DBT training is thrilled with what he
learned and is already incorporating it into his work. “I have been introducing DBT-informed
therapy with adults, adolescents and some children I see,” says Harry Smith. “I have had great
response and on a personal note feel like I have something to offer patients like never before.
Thank you for making this possible.”
SJPHS Behavioral Medicine programs serve adults, children and families in Wayne, Oakland,
Macomb and Washtenaw counties. There are four inpatient treatment programs, four
psychological assessment programs, two partial hospital programs, 10 outpatient programs, one
community residential program and the Brighton Center for Recovery, a national leader in the
treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. More than 38,000 individuals and families received
services from these programs in 2013.
The Ethel and James Flinn Foundation is committed to using its resources to improve the quality,
scope and delivery of mental health services in Michigan.

Walk With ME helps families celebrate life during vulnerable times
When few people gave Mina and Juwan Perkins reason to believe their baby daughter would reach her first birthday, Walk With ME, a St. John Providence Health System Hospice
program, provided compassion, support and hope.
Mina was just 19 weeks pregnant with Mylah when doctors detected an abnormality during a routine ultrasound. Then came multiple appointments with doctors and genetic
counselors. A few days later, Mina received the heartbreaking news: doctors diagnosed her unborn child with Trisomy 18. This syndrome causes intellectual disabilities and other
life-threatening medical issues. About 50 percent of babies with Trisomy 18 carried to term are stillborn. Less than 10 percent survive to their first birthday.
“When you’re pregnant, you imagine what life will be like with your child,” Mina says. “You make plans for the future. I got upset because the doctors and hospital social worker we
met with didn’t give us any hope at all. Their negative outlook ripped all of the joy out of us. We decided that as long as Mylah’s heart was beating, we’d give her every chance to live.”
After researching various hospice care organizations, Mina met with a Walk With ME representative. The program is a pediatric hospice and palliative care service that offers comfort
care to children of all ages, from unborn to young adult. The service also provides practical and spiritual support to the entire family.
“The first time anyone had given us hope came during that meeting,” Mina says. “At that time, I wasn’t even sure about having a baby shower. But Walk With ME encouraged us to
celebrate Mylah. They weren’t about planning for Mylah’s death. Instead, they wanted us to celebrate her life, no matter how long or short it would be.”
Mylah underwent heart surgery shortly after she was born in March 2012. After clearing that hurdle, she went into respiratory failure. Mylah underwent a tracheotomy and received a
ventilator to help her breathe. During the stressful hospital visits and surgeries, Walk With ME remained alongside the Perkins, providing comfort and support.
“Walk With ME provides Mylah with home care services as well as occupational and physical therapy,” Mina
says. “A spiritual advisor provides counseling services. The staff members have shared in our sad moments and
in our times of joy. They even came to Mylah’s first birthday party. They’re like family—I don’t know what we’d
do without them.”
In October, St. John Providence Health System hospice programs benefitted from more than $89,000 in
proceeds from the 11th annual “Walk With ME Event,” held at the Detroit Athletic Club. Mina served as
honorary chair and shared Mylah’s story with event attendees.
“I’m very grateful for the generosity of everyone who raised funds for the program,” Mina says. “It’s important
to support organizations like Walk With ME, because many families can benefit from its services.”
In March, Mylah celebrated her second birthday. Always a fighter, she no longer relies on a ventilator to breathe
and is slowly gaining strength.
“The name of the organization says it all,” Mina says. “Walk With ME has traveled this journey with us and
treated Mylah like a child, not like a Trisomy 18 diagnosis. Their positive and supportive care has played a pivotal
role in the life of our daughter.”

Walk With ME is part of Reverence Home Health & Hospice, a service of St. John Providence
Health System (SJPHS). Reverence Home Health & Hospice provides home care services statewide,
including to patients and families in the SJPHS service area. It offers clinical excellence delivered by
high-caliber physicians, nurses, discharge planners, social workers and volunteers. Patients benefit
from a continuum of care that includes home health, hospice and palliative care, infusion, and
telehealth monitoring.
Program supports mothers to help reduce infant mortality rate in Detroit
Instead of feeling overjoyed, Marya Jefferson felt overwhelmed when she learned she was pregnant. With a limited income and little support from the baby’s father, Marya wasn’t
sure where to turn for help.
“I felt like I was in a hopeless situation,” says Marya, a 27-year-old Detroit resident and single mom. “When my baby’s father decided not to be involved, I didn’t know how I would
cope. I was in a bad place emotionally.”
Then, during a visit with her OB/GYN, Marya learned about the Infant Mortality Program (IMP). Since 1986, IMP has helped reduce the number of infant deaths in the Detroit area
by providing advocacy, education and support services to at-risk pregnant women. St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS) is one of IMP’s founding health care institutions and
continues to sponsor the program, which also relies on philanthropic donations.
The majority of participants are African American women between ages 16 and 27, and 98 percent are single mothers living at or below the poverty line, according to Karen
Gray-Sheffield, St. John Providence Community Health Director.
“Some of these women are homeless or have a history of domestic violence,” she says. “Others have poor nutrition or chronic diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure. Many
have no family to support them.”
IMP’s one-on-one and peer programs help build and sustain families, promote literacy and increase access to health care. The Maternal Infant Health Program provides visits by
a nurse and social worker to mentor high-risk pregnant women in their home and provide emotional support before, during and after pregnancy. The Strong Start Prenatal Care
Support Program empowers women to take charge of their own health during pregnancy by providing prenatal assessment, education and resources in peer support groups. The Read
Write Now Program provides referrals to literacy education. Lastly, the Jubilee Parenting Support Group offers parenting classes, safe sleep classes, health promotion and domestic
violence education for parents with children under age five.
“We educate mothers about topics like nutrition, environmental safety and the need for early prenatal
care,” Karen says. “We continue to partner with these mothers through the first year of the baby’s life to
ensure a strong support system is in place. In addition to empowering women to be better parents, we also
encourage those without a high school diploma or college degree to complete their education so they can
break the cycle of poverty.”
In its 26 years of service, more than 1,800 babies have been born to IMP participants with five infant deaths,
a significant improvement in saving newborn lives. Detroit’s infant mortality rate is about 15 deaths per
1,000 live births.
“I received tons of information about having a healthy pregnancy and other ways to help my baby get here
safely,” says Marya, who delivered a baby girl, Marlei, last September. “We’re both very healthy and
doing well.”
To help program participants obtain items for their babies they otherwise couldn’t afford, IMP periodically
holds group baby showers. Gifts from the SJPHS Associate Giving program help provide items like car seats,
pack and play cribs, strollers and layettes.

“I received clothes, bibs, blankets—just about everything you need for a new baby,” Marya says. “The
program was like a ray of light for me. The amount of support was incredible—not just from the social
workers, but also from the other mothers I met. The program has helped give Marlei a good start in life.”

During hard economic times, SJPHS associates help co-workers in need
Every day, St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS) associates give their time, talent and compassion to care
for patients and their families, but they also go one step further and support their own colleagues who are
in need.
Since 2009, the SJPHS Associate Hardship Fund, supported solely by donations—the majority from associates,
has provided more than $413,000 to over 600 associates who have limited resources and are experiencing
significant financial hardship. Examples include utility shutoff, medical or funeral expenses, eviction or
foreclosure. This one-time benefit is available to eligible associates. Funds are distributed in a way that is
confidential and respectful without promoting dependency.
The Worklife Services department provides confidential help to associates seeking assistance. Recipients are
not required to pay back the money offered as assistance, but they may make future donations to the fund
should their circumstances change.
Many fund recipients send heartfelt letters and emails of gratitude to Worklife Services. One associate writes:
“When things were at their lowest, you were there to help me and my family in a very big way. I truly do not
know what would have happened if you did not see fit to bless us in such a special way. My family and I are
forever grateful and appreciative for the support. My mind goes back to the saying, ‘God always puts people in
your life for a reason.’ Thank God for the special people at St. John Providence Health System.”
While the SJPHS Associate Hardship Fund is included in the Associate and Physician Annual Giving campaigns,
anyone may make tax-deductible contributions to the fund through the SJPHS Foundations.

St. John Providence Health System announces new President/CEO
St. John Providence Health System has named Jean Meyer as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective December 2013.
Jean had been serving as Interim President and CEO since Patricia Maryland, Dr.PH, became Ascension Health President of Healthcare
Operations and Chief Operating Officer in June 2013.
“As a thoughtful and dedicated leader who always views hospital operations through the eyes of a caregiver, it’s clear Jean is the right
choice for St. John Providence,” Dr. Maryland says. “I have personally known and worked alongside Jean for more than 10 years. She has
the vision, creativity and ability to lead our organization through our transformation to Population Health Management and all it requires.
Jean understands that tomorrow’s health care delivery model must be more nimble, more active and more aligned with contemporary
lifestyles and consumer expectations.”
Jean held several executive leadership positions since joining St. John Providence in 2008, including Providence Park Hospital President,
President of Acute Care Operations, and Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer for the health system. Prior to joining St. John
Providence, she held a variety of leadership roles, including positions with St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis for 15 years. She began her
career in health care as an oncology nurse.
Jean earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from Loyola University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in public health from
the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

When you give a gift to St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS), you always have the option of selecting the area you wish to support. However, when donors do not have a preference,
donations are directed to the “area of greatest need.”

purchased with your donations in 2013:
• $ 36,156 was designated to help fund Trident Faxatron radiography equipment for mammograms to help diagnose breast cancer
in patients at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital (SJMOH).
• $ 6,116 was used to purchase a Dakon Hi-Low Mobile Whirlpool for Rehabilitation Services at St. John Hospital and Medical
Center to help patients in their healing process.
• $ 4,460 provided funds for a security camera and intercom system at Brighton Center for Recovery to provide a safe
environment for patients and their families.
• $ 4,006 went toward the purchase of the new Yamaha player baby grand piano for the lobby at SJMOH to help bring the healing
power of music to patients and visitors.
• $ 384 helped purchase an OB Tracevue Monitoring System for the Birthing Center at St. John River District Hospital to assess the
well-being of babies in the uterus during pregnancy or labor.

Leaving a Legacy
Loyal donor supports cancer care and honors friend with estate gift
When Pam Stanton considered making a legacy gift as part of her estate plan, her first thought was to support Oncology care at
St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC) and to honor one of her closest friends.
“My loyalty to St. John goes way back,” says Pam, a Grosse Pointe Park resident and retired editor and publisher. “From the time I was
growing up, the hospital has always been my family’s primary health care resource. Our community is very fortunate to have a facility
like St. John Hospital—we don’t have to go to another area hospital or another part of the country to receive top-notch care.”
Pam’s generous planned gift will support the Joan Gehrke Endowed Fund in Oncology at SJH&MC. The fund, which supports new
research initiatives, physician education opportunities and additional program specialty areas, was created in 2011 to honor Joan’s
legacy of volunteer service to the hospital. Pam and Joan have been good friends since meeting in the mid-1980s.
“We met through the Junior League of Detroit,” Pam says. “She’s a great mover and shaker, and I’ve always admired her
volunteerism. I thought my planned gift to the fund established in her name would be a great way to honor her.”
Pam also chose to support the Gehrke Fund because of her family’s experience with cancer.
“I’m a breast cancer survivor and received treatment at St. John,” she says. “My husband also received treatment for lymphoma
there for six years before he passed away. I know from experience that St. John is tops in cancer care and is always bringing in new,
talented physicians.”
Through her gift, Pam is a member of the McQuade Society, a service which provides personal navigation for any health care services
to loyal hospital donors and their families. Pam and her late husband were also members of the Cornerstone Society, the first
coordinated initiative to attract major gifts to SJH&MC.
“I hope that my gift will help St. John continue to be a premier facility for many years to come,” Pam says. “The support the hospital
has received from so many generous people is a real tribute to its outstanding physicians, nurses and staff.”
