Mi Escuelita Preschool Annual Report 2011 Mi Escuelita Preschool Board of Directors Board Chair Mark Guckian, Brinker International Board Vice-Chair Ricardo Barrenechea, Frito Lay Board Treasurer Jay Duke, BDO Seidman, LLP Board Secretary Kim Griffith, The Wellness Way Brian R. We overcame challenges and stayed on course to meet our goals and in some cases, surpass them. Operationally, we lost the Wesley Rankin center due to harsh cold weather which froze the water pipes causing them to burst and flood the site. The majority of the children from this site were reassigned to other Mi Escuelita locations nearby and we were able to help them make this transition without disruption to their school year. Certainly, as the past few years were challenging for everyone, Mi Escuelita Preschool was not spared. What we heard over the past two years about the down economy, unemployment being high, home ownership falling through the floor, is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. With that type of new pressure, it was important for us as a board to stay abreast of rapid changes in both public and private funding sources. To help our teachers boost student learning, we introduced CLASS, a new assessment tool that helps teachers recognize and understand the power of their interactions with students and serves to boost student learning. We continue to see our children emerge stronger, smarter and eager to learn. Testing shows that when our children graduate they are able to master a second language and are AHEAD of their chronological developmental expectation. On the branding and marketing side, I’m excited to say that we began the process of transforming our image. Our marketing/PR committee partnered with Dieste, Inc. to develop a new, more refreshed look with a new logo and a new tagline (Give Wings) that we are integrating into all of our communication. The new look instilled in us a renewed level of energy and we look forward to maintaining the momentum as we push forward in the upcoming year. Adding to our success were the hundreds of volunteers who gave of their time in the classrooms with Mi Escuelita children. Our children enjoyed learning and experiencing a wide variety of activities and subjects. We had 1,804 volunteers spending 29,323 hours of their time to give back. Not to be outdone, our committed and tireless committee members put together one of the most successful fundraising dinners to date. Our annual dinner exceeded goal by 93% - thank you to key sponsors, donors, volunteers, and friends of Mi Escuelita who contributed to the success. I am happy to report this same dream team has agreed to lead this fundraising initiative again next year. As I look to the next year, I am optimistic that the worst is behind us. We are working diligently to maintain the momentum and the spirit of “Give Wings” and I invite you to join us in the excitement. Give Wings, Gayle Nave, Executive Director In this new climate, we saw the importance of forming committees dedicated to supporting the different initiatives important to Mi Escuelita. The Dinner Committee really outdid themselves this year, raising almost double the funds from previous years. We are thankful to the board members who led our many volunteers and supporters that organized such a successful event. Our new Marketing and PR Committee spearheaded a new re-branding campaign, new logo and tagline for Mi Escuelita. Working with Dieste, Inc. we expect to continue to fine tune and expand our marketing communication. Being top of mind and keeping Mi Escuelita in the forefront are keys to our success. And our development committee worked diligently to bring in new sponsors this year, adding many new sponsors to the list. These efforts led to the success of our Annual Dinner and subsequent events throughout the year. As we move forward into the new year, it is imperative we keep our eye on the changing landscape of early education in Dallas. The increasing diversity of its child population with limited language proficiency makes the need we meet that much greater. Thank you to our board members, our donors, our sponsors, our staff, our volunteers and friends of Mi Escuelita. It is through your generous and tireless effort that we are able to provide quality, early childhood education to the children with the greatest need. All the best, Mark Guckian Board Chair DONORS Donor List 1 Did You Know... Mi Escuelita graduates have attended Brown University, Yale, Georgetown, University of Pennsylvania and The Wharton School of Business along with all major universities in the State of Texas Jason Aiden Guevara (son) Alumni Like Father Like Son “I am a product of Mi Escuelita and I also chose Mi Escuelita for my son. The fact that I am able to bring my son to a program that I was part of is very fulfilling for me “- Jason Guevara When Jason Guevara drops off his young son, Jason Aiden Guevara at Mi Escuelita Bethany site, it stirs fond memories of being dropped off at Mi Escuelita by his own father. Jason attended Mi Escuelita back in the 80’s and recalls the excitement of attending school every day. “It was where my friends and my cousins were, and I knew we were going to do something cool. I couldn’t wait to get back to school the next day”, says Jason laughingly. He sees the same excitement in his son’s face in the mornings and can hear it in his voice when he talks about his day at home. Both parents marvel at his sense of independence and how quickly young Jason adjusted. He started Mi Escuelita in October 2010 and after six months was already expressing his desire to “bathe himself”. That’s a big step in the Guevara household. Mr. Guevara confirms they made a conscious decision to enroll their son in a school that will allow their son to develop both his English and Spanish language skills. “He’s growing as a person in different categories and stages that will benefit him later life”, affirms Mr. Guevara. traits, manners and values. “He says please and thank you and sorry” and this means something to her. “I see a lot of myself in my son. I know that attending Mi Escuelita will help him tremendously later in life. I am a product of Mi Escuelita and I chose Mi Escuelita for my son. The fact that I am able to bring my son to a program that I was part of is very fulfilling for me. I know I’m doing well by him”, commented Jason. To hear more from Jason about being a Mi Escuelita parent, visit our website at www. miescuelita.org and check out our video page. After leaving Mi Escuelita, Jason remembers his teachers telling him he was always talking and smiling. He works at Bank of America and enjoys talking and helping his customers. “My co-workers say that I’m a chatterbox, I talk to everybody. I wasn’t always so confident in my words. Now, well, you can’t get me to stop. I owe that to Mi Escuelita. They taught me a lot of things early in life”, said Jason with a big smile on his face. He comments that he never felt behind or out of place when he was in school. Jason confides that his wife is thankful Jason Aiden is not only learning the basic education fundamentals like numbers, math, colors, shapes, etc. but that he is developing his personality Jason Guevara, former student at Mi Escuelita Bethany and father of Jason Aiden Guevara Student Article Student Did You Know... While there are over 2,500 licensed childcare centers and day care homes in Dallas County only 25 are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Of the 25 accredited programs, 5 of these are Mi Escuelita sites Student Delivering on the Mission new school. The Gonzalez family has three children, Maria, 13, Juan, 10 and Noe, 5 who attended Mi Escuelita Preschool and both the husband and wife volunteer at Mi Escuelita, with Antonio, the father cleaning the schoolyard on weekends and Gabriela, the mother, working in the classroom assisting the teachers. They value education in the lives of their children and are happy to give back if it means their kids have access to all the opportunities available to them. “We want our kids to go to college, to succeed in life, and we know we have to do our part to make that happen for them”, said Gabriela Gonzalez. Noe, her youngest child, is currently enrolled at Mi Escuelita and is an intelligent, caring boy, but extremely shy. His mother explains that one day while in the laundry room at home, the washing machine kicked into the spin cycle. When Noe heard the whirring sound, he stated to her “you know mom, that’s how a tornado starts to form”. He went on to describe what the clouds look like and what the family has to do to take shelter in the event of a tornado. His mother always thought he was too young to learn about such complex subjects like weather, much less safety precautions. She asked him, where he learned about weather and he said, Ms. Sosa his teacher at Mi Escuelita taught him about weather. Although shy, his teacher informs his mother that Noe is one of the children in class who actively participates in class discussion on subjects like science. This makes his mother proud. While enrolled at Mi Escuelita, the teachers recall Maria being a model student from day one. She adjusted well, was outgoing and was an avid learner. “At first we weren’t sure about how well our daughter would do because she didn’t speak English well, but my husband and I decided she would do better in school than staying at home with me,” said Gabriela. Often, Maria would ask her parents to challenge her to see how high she could count, how many words she knew, or even to read them a book. “The first time she did this, I cried”, said Mrs. Gonzalez. Maria tells her mother that she wants to become a pediatrician and would like to come back to Mi Escuelita to give the parents health tips. “I believe she will do it”, her mother states proudly. Maria is currently enrolled in a private school where she was accepted because of her grades. Her parents firmly believe the program and the curriculum at Mi Escuelita established the solid educational foundation that allows Maria to enjoy the academic success she has now. After Maria left Mi Escuelita, the Gonzalez’ knew they had to enroll their other two children. They were convinced the Mi Escuelita program was a good place for their kids to start their education. Juan, the middle child, attended Mi Escuelita for only one year but it was then the teachers noticed Juan was having trouble “feeling” the objects in his hands, thus impacting his motor skills. He eventually transferred to a school that provided both learning and therapy for him, but his mother states that he was always adamant about completing tasks on his own. He didn’t want help. She recalls a statement he made when in therapy, “let me, my teacher at Mi Escuelita says I have to do things myself first, then ask for help”. His mother is grateful to Mi Escuelita for instilling a sense of independence and self-sufficiency in her son. He is excelling at his The commitment to doing whatever must be done to keep the child in school is evident. At Mi Escuelita we are here to provide their children an education – it’s what we do. It’s our mission and we are just as committed. Program & Org Highlights Did You Know... Mi Escuelita children consistently test in the upper 10th percentile in the third grade which is a key indicator for continued academic success PROGRAM & ORG highlights New Logo, New Tagline, New Look This year, Mi Escuelita refreshed its image and branding with a new logo and tagline and also added new multimedia platforms to increase branding opportunities for Mi Escuelita and our sponsors. We kicked off our new look and showed off our “wings” at a Texas Rangers game one week prior to the donor dinner which helped boost community awareness. Donor Dinner Surpasses Goal by 93% The 2011 Mi Escuelita Cena de La Mariposa (Dinner of the Butterfly) was a tremendous success, surpassing fundraising goal by 93%, thanks to presenting sponsor Estrada Hinojosa and the leadership of Marcia Hinojosa on the Dinner Committee. The event was attended by community friends of Mi Escuelita, key Dallas dignitaries including representatives from the Mayor’s office, city council members, a TV media personality and a state pageant spokesperson.
