CARILLON
JERSEYVILLE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - APRIL, 2015
Stay Awake with Me for
One Holy Week
What your
contributions accomplish
This past Christmas we received
contributions totaling $540 for the
Christmas Joy Offering. Half of that
offering is used by The Board of Pensions
of the Presbyterian Church (USA) to
provide grants to church workers with
financial needs.
In 2014, 543 grants were given to
retired church workers’ as income or
housing supplements, 388 grants were
given through presbyteries for assisting
church worker’s with urgent financial
needs (including adoption assistance grants
and emergency assistance grants), 281
grants were given to assist pastors in doing
their work.
The grand total of grants given
through The Board of Pensions was
$5,293,000. Thank you for your generosity.
We are invited to journey with Jesus to
Jerusalem during Holy Week. It is a hard journey
and not everyone has the stamina to endure it.
Thomas, the apostle, put it this way, “Let us also
go, that we might die with him.”
Our journey begins with our worship on Palm
Sunday, then moves to our Lenten devotional time
on Wednesday in the church library, followed by us
gathering around tables on Maundy Thursday to
mark the Last Supper, which leads us to Good
Friday and the hearing once again, the passion of
our Lord, then a day of private reflective silence on
Saturday, until we gather again in the sanctuary at
10 a.m. Sunday to hear if death is God’s final word
for us.
Going Forward
As our Session determines how best for us to do
the discernment necessary to follow God’s leading
into the future, each of us can prepare ourselves for
that process right now.
Our presbytery is hosting an event Friday and
Saturday, April 17 and 18 to learn how to better
understand and connect with the needs of our
community. Friday’s event will be held at
Westminster Presbyterian Church in Belleville
beginning in the afternoon (continue on page 3)

Presbyterian Churches
Threatened
Four churches in our presbytery received the same
anonymous letter in response to the PCUSA passage of
Amendment 14-F permitting pastors to perform and
churches to host same gender weddings. In conversations
with pastors of the churches, I learned that the letter
contained threatening statements that their pastors should be
dismissed and the churches burned.
The pastors responded by alerting law enforcement
officials who are investigating and increasing patrols around
the churches. Presbytery staff members are in contact with
the pastors.
Please hold in prayer the following churches and their
leaders: First (Cape Girardeau), Westminster (Cape
Girardeau), First (Jackson) and First (Perryville).
Dear First Presbyterian Church,
I wanted to take some time to thank
the wonderful people who helped my
family this past holiday. I appreciate
all that you have done and I think
everybody you help would say the
same. It’s nice to know that there are
many willing to help others who are
in need.
Thank you! With all the love that I
am capable of.

To Presbyterian Church Congregation,
Thank you very much for the lovely gift you have given me. Words cannot really express how much
that meant to me. You have a beautiful church. I will use what has been given to me to honor our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thank you oh so much. May God bless each and every one of you.

Dear Prayer Shawl Ministry,
Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. It came just when we needed it the most! It is the

Hello, and it’s almost Spring Greetings,
On behalf of my children, staff and families, I thank you for caring and sharing your gifts. We are so
thankful for your support as we face the crisis of Illinois.
I am asking that you please include in your prayers, all children in a childcare setting and please
continue contacting your legislators. This time we’re mailing Easter Egg cutouts to them.
Again, thank you for everything you do for all of God’s children, young and old, everywhere.
Happy Easter and Blessings,

From the Pastor’s Heart
Last Sunday I sat in the youth class with Brett and Elese Smith and Luke Palcheff and
answered 19 what they called “Difficult Questions” they had been discussing in Sunday School. I
was thrilled to be invited. Few things thrill me more as a pastor than to have people ask questions
about God and faith.
So I was thrilled again when a wonderful faithful attender in worship and participant in our
church’s life emailed me he needed help making sense of our denomination’s recent decision to
change the definition of marriage from “a man and a woman” to “two people, traditionally a man
and a woman.” He asked me if I would please preach or teach on Romans 1:18-32, Leviticus
18:22 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. I couldn’t thank him enough for his request.
We agreed that on Sunday, April 19, I will do both. I will preach on those passages in worship
and offer a 45 minute time for Conversation with the Pastor at 11:15 that morning. I haven’t been
this excited in a long time.
I hope you will join us and consider what questions you have been wanting to ask about the
Bible and faith but were hesitant to do so. What is an Embassy of the Kingdom of God if not a
place where people are encouraged to ask questions?
