A Message from Monsignor - Saint Pius X Catholic Church
ECHOES S P E C I A L C A M PA I G N E D I T I O N VOLUME 15 ISSUE 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 A Message from Monsignor St. Pius the Tenth received good news after a delegation from our parish met with the Bishop and Diocesan leadership regarding our campaign to Gather and Grow. Impressed with the great success of our campaign, we received permission to take the design forward to engineered construction drawings. After the architects are finished, our contractor, Rentenbach Constructors, will receive bids from the various sub-contractors for construction. Trust me when Reverend Monsignor I tell you, I can’t wait to get Anthony Marcaccio into our new buildings, and we will be doing everything we can to finish them early and with excellence. The diocese will be looking at the rate at which pledges are turned into cash from the campaign since the diocesan formula to begin construction requires having 50% of the project cost in cash. We do not expect any difficulty as a remarkable 99% of the pledges of the campaign to build the church were collected, during and in the aftermath of the recession of ’08. You may have seen in the recent Catholic News Herald story on the success of the diocesan campaign, Forward in Faith, Hope and Love. How proud I am of the leadership of our parish and the role our own campaign played in the bigger story of that success. The truly incredible thing is even though there are far larger parishes than ours, we have made the third largest contribution to the diocese. We did this in the midst of a drive to meet our real and immediate needs at St. Pius X. As one person working on the campaign said to me, “because of its history of stewardship and spirit of gratitude, it’s as if St. Pius will not be outdone in generosity.” Thanks for making that a very true statement. Moving On ... Yet Still With Us! A big THANK YOU to Tracy Welliver who started working at St. Pius X out of graduate school as our Faith Formation Director and who recently left us as Pastoral Associate for Liturgy and Faith Formation to take another position with Liturgical Publications, Inc. The good news is Tracy and his family will be staying and using St. Pius X as their home base. Dave Wils, who served as our Youth Minister and recently married Amanda Mitchell, has taken a position with Guilford County Schools. He also will be staying in the parish. We thank them both for their professional ministry and wish them the very best. Please know the search is underway to fill the positions. We appreciate all those who are helping in the process. After 22 Years, Where Did He Go? Tracy Earl Welliver There have been so many questions about my leaving the staff of Saint Pius X and my new job, I have been asked to share about my new journey. With almost 22 years of service to Saint Pius X, I had no intention of going anywhere. I was very happy as Pastoral Associate, working with all the great stewards in the ministries of formation and liturgy. Less than 2 years ago, I was approached by Liturgical Publications, Inc. at a conference where I was speaking. LPi is the largest bulletin company in the US which also offers a complete parish communication solution. They were looking to diversify even more and had a vision of becoming a church stewardship company, helping See 22 Years on page 3. 22 Years (Continued from page 1.) parishes become strong stewardship parishes like our own. They asked me to write a whitepaper on online giving, and that successful project led to my becoming a regular writer for Connect!, a bimonthly newsletter focusing on parish leadership and liturgy preparation. Around Easter of this year, I was asked by LPi to consider several more projects. I expressed my time was limited, but my interest level was still high. Then in July, they made an offer for me to become their Director of Parish Community and Engagement. I was asked to write my own job description and essentially help them chart a course that would lead them into becoming the leading stewardship company in North America. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse, especially since I would be allowed to work from home. There are 3 primary components to the job: writing, speaking, and parish consulting. I don’t really have much to do with bulletins, except the creation of some content for them. It was clear that it was God calling me to this new journey, and I am grateful for all the kind words I have received in the past weeks. I will remain in the parish and hope to be an active steward. I want to thank Monsignor for his support in this time of transition. I will always be thankful to the parish that gave a kid fresh out of Duke Divinity School a chance 22 years ago. Chris Westmoreland Endowment Established Ryan Murray Chris Westmoreland is a familiar name to members of the St. Pius X parish family. An endowment fund has been created in his memory. The Chris Westmoreland Endowment Fund was recently set-up through Chris’ family with the help of the St. Pius X staff. Scholarships will be awarded for a variety of activities such as Workcamp for active members of the St. Pius X Youth Group. “One of the reasons we chose to give back to the Youth Group at St. Pius is because it was such an important part of Chris’ life,” said Cindy Westmoreland, Chris’ mother. “The endowment will be able to give back to the youth at St. Pius X forever and ever.” On July 11, The Chris Westmoreland First Annual Memorial Golf Tournament was held at Oak Hollow Golf course with the funds raised benefitting the endowment. “We had a very good turnout and great support from our sponsors,” Cindy said. “The tournament will certainly be an annual event.” For more information on the Chris Westmoreland Endowment Fund, contact the parish office at 2724681. What Does Love Mean? Professionals posed the above question to a group of children. This was one response: A four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed in to his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked what he said to the neighbor, the little boy said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.” Seasons of Hope Grief Support Ministry Sessions Daryl Ferguson Starts Sunday, September 28, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Meets for 6 weeks on Sunday afternoons at the Parish Office on State Street. The loss of a loved one is devastating. Seasons of Hope (SOH), a national program created by a hospice specialist more than a decade ago, helps people carry the weight of that cross, supporting them through their journey of grief while providing them with encouragement and hope. Grounded in Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church, SOH is a 6 week comprehensive peer-led grief support program. St. Pius X has an active consolation ministry to organize funerals and wakes for the parish and this grief ministry complements our outreach efforts. If you need help carrying the loss of your loved one, make plans to join the Seasons of Hope Sessions. Each SOH Session consists of a greeting and opening prayer, scripture, a journal assignment and sharing, then closes with another prayer, followed by fellowship and snacks with members of the Ministry Team and the participants. Along with the sessions, the SOH team mails sympathy cards, prays, writes letters and makes phone calls to those in our parish who have lost loved ones. The leaders of this ministry say that the most special part of SOH is its gift of healing for the participants. The next 6 week session of Seasons of Hope starts Sunday, September 28. If you would like to participate or need more information, please call the parish office 272-4681. You can also register by visiting our website www.stpiusxnc.com and go to Registration and Payment for Parish Programs. Note: there is no fee to register and attend this group. Please, come for comfort and healing. 2 Prayer For the Day Father, through my face may your light shine; Through my voice may your praise be heard; Through my hands may your works be extended; Through my life may your grace abound; Through my heart may your love be known. Financial Letter To The Parish Dear St. Pius X Parishioners: Accompanying this letter is a consolidated operating statement for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2013 and ending on June 30, 2014. In general, revenue from all non-restricted donations well exceeded the budget while expenses for the same period were less than budgeted. Despite the continued growth and required services, Monsignor and his staff did a very good job of controlling spending throughout the fiscal year. The following are some of the specific details: • Actual Offertory for the fiscal year was $1,552,770, exceeding the budget by $50,270. • Total expenses (excluding interest on our debt) for the fiscal year were $1,435,528 which was $105,620 less than we budgeted. General Administrative expenses were the biggest variance, but all categories spent less than budgeted. Under the General Administrative category, salaries and the associated taxes were the largest accounts that underspent the budget due to not hiring full and part time positions that were in the budget. • Religious Formation programs spent less than budgeted by $32,180. The reduction in expenses were spread across all areas of Religious Formation. • The CVS actual income exceeded the budget because of a “catch up” payment due to an increase in the lease that was missed. In January, the diocese conducted a complete audit of our financial record keeping. The audit found ten areas of concern and made recommendations for corrective action. All ten concerns have been addressed by the administrative staff at St. Pius X and corrective actions implemented. On July 29, 2014 we received a letter from the director of Parish Audit Services stating that our corrective actions fulfilled all of their recommendations and they considered the audit complete. The Finance Council has been working with the diocese to put together a financial plan and cash flow analysis for “Making a Place to Gather and Grow.” The financial spreadsheets were provided to the diocese the first of August and presented a very strong financial position, both in the amount of pledges we have secured and the amount of cash we have saved. The Diocesan Building Committee agreed with all the assumptions that were presented. As of June 30, 2014, the debt remaining on the church was $671,783. Because we have collected pledges from the church’s capital campaign to cover this debt, it does not have an effect on our ability to move forward with the “Gather and Grow” project. On-line giving has continued to increase every month since it was offered. We did add the option to make contributions through the use of a credit card recently and that option has also been growing in use since it was introduced. It is extremely inspiring to be part of a faith community that has such a strong financial commitment to St. Pius X Church. Thank You! Should you ever have questions or comments regarding any aspect of the finances, please feel free to contact me or any member of the Finance Council through the parish office. Best regards, Mark P. Painley Finance Council Chairman 3 Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have abundance for every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 4 NEW FALL ADULT BIBLE STUDIES! St. Pius X Receives Resource Grant for Students with Disabilities Early last spring St. Pius X applied for a grant from the Foundation of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte to provide support and training on best practices for serving children with intellectual disabilities, including autism. Although the faith formation program already serves several children in our community, the proposed grant would allow the program to reach out to additional children. In July, we were notified that a grant in the amount of $1,000 had been approved. This grant, administered by Bree Jimenez, will provide St. Pius X Faith Formation catechists access to the support services of the National Catholic Partnership on Disabilities including multiple webinars, software that can be used to develop materials with picture symbols and a notebook of adapted materials. The use of all these resources will enable our catechists to meet the needs of all of our children with the goal of having an inclusive faith formation program. 8 St. Pius X Community Star Steward Parishioner, John Joyce, is very active in SPX Knights of Columbus and is often at daily Mass. John is a retired Chief Pilot from GE and is using his business skills to help Step Up Ministry participants. Step Up is a Greensboro interfaith community ministry providing job readiness training, preparing motivated people to make positive life changes to become self-sufficient. Every month, Step Up holds a weekly Job Readiness class and John helps participants write resumes, prepare for interviews, teaches proper networking skills, and even assists them to dress and present success. John’s volunteer colleagues at Step Up say his “work ethic and individual assistance with each participant empowers them to change their lives. Even in retirement, they continue to serve faithfully in our parishes with Masses and confessions. It is only through the generosity and continued service of retired priests that many of our active priests can take a much deserved vacation once in awhile. Some of you might remember Fr. Jim Solari and Msgr. Showefety who fill in when Msgr. Marcaccio has to be away. Each parish is assessed 3.5% of their offertory to pay for the Priests’ Retirement and Benefits Plan. That assessment became a necessity when it became evident that the funds on hand and those from the second collection would not meet the future retirement needs of our priests. This fund also provides for the future retirement of those priests currently in active ministry. It insures that funds will be there when they are ready to retire. Our parish assessment is $52,443.42. That amounts to slightly less than two times our weekend offertory. Please consider making a proportionate contribution to this important collection and please pray for our priests. Pray in thanksgiving for the many gifts they bring to their priestly ministry and for the many ways they shepherd us through prayer, sacrament and service each day. 9 October 11 from 12-8 p.m. Featuring Pony Rides, Entertainment, Inflatables, Great Food, Cupcake Walk, Comet Cafe, Games, and Contests!
