r t s : A 2 0 o 08 annual report C o M Transforming Lives Through Movement & Creative Expression Report from the President As the only multi-arts center in New Hampshire, MoCo Arts has taken a leadership role in promoting the reality that the arts have a substantial impact not only on a community’s lifestyle but also its economic livelihood. Historically, the population has turned to the arts in difficult economic times. Happily, we have seen MoCo’s enrollment numbers continue rising even during the present economic downturn. Scholarship needs have increased, but our funders, thankfully, continue to support that need. MoCo Arts has continued its pursuit of cultural enrichment in the Monadnock region by joining a group of over fifty other arts organizations under the aegis of the Arts Alive initiative. Looking to the future and working with others, we envision establishing a collaborative multi-arts center in Keene that would be the pride of the Monadnock Region and beyond. This multi-arts center would locate expanded teaching, exhibit and performance spaces in either a single facility or possibly a centrally-located campus for the arts. It would not only foster artistic growth, it would also provide operating and space efficiencies – solutions to many of the ongoing problems that face individual arts organizations and programs which presently have to “go it alone” in both good times and bad. While we wait out the recession, dreaming of shaping a convivial arts colony, we remain true to our mission of transforming lives through movement and creative expression. As we actively plan this future we will zealously safeguard MoCo Arts’ continuance as a vibrant center for multi-arts education for the Monadnock Region. Jean Hoffman President 76 Railroad Street • Keene, New Hampshire • 03431-3744 • 603-357-2100 • www.moco.org Report from the Executive Director Over the past eleven years, I have seen the vitality of the arts… and the need for more arts education… gaining the attention of families, government and community leaders. We have long recognized that the arts are an economic as well as a cultural engine, build social capital and improve quality of life. When the arts are integrated into school curricula, students learn in new and better ways. Immersion in the arts is a preferred prevention tool for “at risk” youth. Public health agencies are partnering with arts organizations to use arts for healing and to promote wellness with citizens of all ages. Additionally, the demand for arts and wellness for adults is growing as our aging population seeks health and creative fulfillment. Our investment and achievements in the past year have positioned us well for the current economic climate. Our focus for the past year was threefold: 1. Governance: • Strengthened our board and its operations 2. Program Space: • Moved adult programs to Elm St, and brought youth programs back to Railroad St. • Took ownership of the 76 Railroad Street building 3. Internal Structures: • Leadership team in place: (Administrative Team and Program Directors) • Conducted and implemented recommendations of operational audit Thank You for Your Gifts! The following gifts of over $50 were received by MoCo Arts between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008. We have done our best to be accurate. Please let us know any errors or ommissions. The reward comes when a parent confides that when her daughter’s Dad was sent to Iraq, it was MoCo and Creative Arts at Keene that saved her. While we still carry the vision for a multi arts center, the issue is when and how to move forward… in order to merge our extraordinary creative energies with those of other non-profit organizations to create something truly new and unique and wonderful. By being the stewards of our own growth and sustainability, we will help support the growth and sustainability for all arts and wellness organizations in our community. Badger Company, Inc. From the Treasurer: Last year MoCo Arts experienced modest growth. After announcing in March 2008 that we would not be pursuing a new building, we focused our funds and attention on securing our downtown presence. The extraordinary gift of our flagship location at 76 Railroad Street increased our assets and net worth by $515,000. Additional funds were raised to renovate a space on Elm Street that allowed us to expand our wellness programs. Program Service Fees, which includes both our tuitions and production revenue, showed a slight decrease from the previous year. Our tuition increased during the year as the number of students participating in our programs grew, but the lack of revenue from our biannual performance of Nutcracker reduced the line in total. We expect to see continued growth in tuition revenue with the expansion of our wellness and art programs. We continued to offer scholarships and discounts which exceeded $110,000 in FY2008. Financial Statement Statement of Activity for the Years ended August 31, 2008 and 2007 Support & Revenue Program Service Fees Sponsorships Contributions and Fundraising Grant and Foundation Income In-Kind Contributions Miscellaneous income 2008 $508,347 $15,650 $406,588 $39,600 $22,115 $7,479 2007 $534,548 $20,895 $214,551 $71,110 $72,452 $15,120 total $999,779 $928,676 Expenses Program Services Management & General Fundraising 2008 $709,259 $188,909 $60,286 2007 $635,381 $210,326 $61,569 $ 958,454 $907,276 $41,325 $21,400 Total Excess (Deficiency of Support and Revenue over Expenses) *FY 08 – Received an in-kind gift of $515,000 of property. The increase in program offerings and locations had a direct impact on our expenses. Program expenses increased 13% over 2007. The additional costs covered teacher salaries and occupancy costs associated with expanded program offerings and our new location on Elm Street. As we enter a period of economic uncertainty, we have taken early steps to control our costs and improve revenues. We have set goals for increasing the average class size and we have consolidated administrative positions in order to streamline our processes. We have also set some long range goals for diversifying our contributions revenue by developing a broader range of individual and foundation supporters.
