Focus 2014: A Year in Review Fo u n d a t i o n Jacqueline and Aaron Van Duyne III, 2014 Chilton Enchanted Winter Wonderland Gala Honorees FEATURED: Basketball Buddies Team up for Breast Cancer Also Inside: • Q&A with Michael J. Kane, MD, FACP • Why I Give • Planning to Make a Difference... • Our Community Cares A Message From... The President When it comes to health care, we believe our patients need the right combination of high tech and high touch. This is why Chilton Medical Center has invested more than $24 million in acquiring the latest technologies and transforming our facilities so patients can achieve optimal health, or fight illness and disease, within the comforting arms of their community hospital. A perfect example of this commitment is the Chilton Breast Center, where dedicated radiologists look at breast cancer screening from every angle with our breast tomosynthesis 3D mammography. This latest innovation, now available at Chilton, makes breast cancer screening and detection much more accurate. And because we know medical care isn’t just about the technology, we threw out the paper gowns and the cold changing rooms and replaced them with an experience that many patients have described as “spa-like,” complete with comfortable robes, complimentary coffee and tea and our peaceful lounge. 2015 will bring more growth and enhancement to Chilton. We are continuing modernization projects and are planning to begin construction of an unprecedented Children’s Center which will centralize all pediatric services, from ER to inpatient, into one dedicated, kid-friendly space. This Center will be the first of its kind in the region, and I encourage you to learn more about how you can contribute to its success. As we continue to transform our hospital to meet the needs of our communities, we welcome your involvement in helping to make Chilton Medical Center the state-of-the-art, compassionate health care provider you want for you and your family. I wish you a healthy and prosperous new year. Deborah K. Zastocki, DNP, RN President, Chilton Medical Center A feature story in this issue further illustrates how far reaching and important breast cancer screening and awareness is to so many. It even compelled two local boys to raise funds to benefit Chilton in honor of their moms, who are both breast cancer survivors. Our merger with prestigious Atlantic Health System this past year has brought unprecedented access to world class services while bolstering our stature as a thriving community hospital. Our Foundation is stronger than ever and our mission remains to raise funds to solely benefit the programs and services of Chilton Medical Center and the communities it serves. The Foundation had a banner year! Our three signature events, the Chilton Wine Tasting, Golf Outing and Gala all garnered tremendous success, totaling more than $375,000. In fact, our gala exceeded its fundraising goal and hosted 430 guests, the most ever! Additional support from visionary donors and businesses was particularly heartening this year, including $1.5 million received through bequests, a private gift which helped purchase a third ultrasound machine for The Breast Center’s growing patient population, and an outstanding $27,000 from 25 participating businesses through our sixth annual Paint the Towns Pink event. This unique event garnered the support of so many from all with Michael J. Kane, MD, FACP Michel J. Kane, MD, FACP, a board certified medical oncologist, is the new Medical Director of Community Oncology for Atlantic Health System and founder of Atlantic Medical Oncology, with offices serving the Chilton community. Recognized by his peers as a “Top Doc” in New Jersey and among the “Best Doctors in America,” Dr. Kane brings a vast wealth of expertise, experience and leadership to Chilton’s Cancer Center – along with big plans for building a comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer program for patients and their families. ? Q. It is evident from your accomplished background that you have a true passion for oncology. Why did you choose this field and what drives your commitment? A. Given the fact that cancer is the second leading cause of adult death in the United States – and increasing in incidence as our population ages – I felt there was a pressing need for oncology specialists. As importantly, throughout my 29 years of practice, oncology has always been on the cutting edge of medical breakthroughs. We are constantly learning more about the disease and discovering new ways of diagnosing and treating cancers. Q. In your view, what has been the most profound innovation in cancer care? Are there any exciting advancements on the horizon that promise new hope for cancer patients? The Chief Development Officer 2014 was a wonderful year for the Chilton Medical Center Foundation, and we are grateful to our donors, community members and local businesses who partnered with us and were truly philanthropic. Q&A corners of life, from hair salons to girls’ soccer teams, karate schools and school-aged children, all participating with a singular goal to promote breast cancer awareness and raise money for The Breast Center. Looking to 2015, we will be spearheading a Major Gift Initiative to raise $500,000 for our new Children’s Center. To kick off our fundraising efforts, Sordoni Construction Company of Chester, NJ, held a golf fundraiser which produced $30,000 in support of this project. I want to thank our many donors, volunteers and Foundation staff whose tenacity, dedication and support have guided and driven us to grow and achieve the brightest future possible. A. The most significant breakthrough is the realization that not all cancers are alike, even those that appear to be alike. For example, we now know that breast cancers that are hormone receptor-positive should be treated differently than other breast cancers – because targeted therapies can dramatically improve a patient’s prognosis. We now know that not all cancers require radiation therapy, and that many breast cancer patients do just as well with a lumpectomy as they do with mastectomy. For patients with certain lung cancers, we even have a pill that is twice as effective as chemotherapy, without the side effects. Looking ahead, I’m most excited about the impact of genomic research, which will allow us to tailor cancer treatment to an individual’s tumor DNA. Scientists are working to identify all of the genetic abnormalities seen in common cancers, which will lead to more targeted therapies for cancers of the breast, colon, lung and prostate as well as lymphoma, melanoma and other diseases. Q. What is your vision for Chilton’s Cancer Center? A. Ninety-five percent of patients who are diagnosed with cancer should be able to receive care within their own community. That’s what I anticipate at Chilton. In partnership with the hospital staff and physician colleagues, my focus is to expand, strengthen and coordinate all of our cancer services – so patients and their doctors will feel secure in knowing that the resources they need are available within our network of care. While some diagnoses may warrant the added expertise of a larger institution, most patients can receive leading edge treatment right here at Chilton. Q. What kind of improvements can our patients expect to see? Joan Beloff Chief Development Officer A. One of our first priorities was creating a more active, multi-disciplinary cancer conference. Every week, a panel of specialists evaluates and discusses treatment for new cancer patients – who essentially receive five or six consultations within days of their diagnoses through this process. This initiative is already improving care. In the coming months, patients will also benefit from expanded oncology services, including upgrades to our Infusion Suites for chemotherapy and new support services, such as genetic and nutrition counseling. Patients will have greater access to clinical research trials and subspecialists from all of our Atlantic Health System hospitals as well as the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. And we’re planning several facility renovations to improve patient privacy, safety and comfort. Our goal is to build a center of excellence – and to be the first stop for cancer patients in our community. Leaving a Legacy Mr. and Mrs. Sputz have been giving to Chilton Medical Center for the past 25 years. In fact, they have consistently demonstrated their philanthropic leadership as part of Chilton Medical Center Foundation’s President’s Club. “John and Eve are among our most loyal benefactors,” asserts Mary Ellen Loranger, Director of Development. “Their exemplary commitment has advanced many growth initiatives at Chilton, allowing us to add new programs and services while providing our community with leading edge medical care.” Determined to make a greater difference, Mr. Sputz recently expanded his charitable giving through service. He retired from BAE Systems North America in 2013 and became a Chilton Medical Center volunteer! Oakland resident John Sputz has earned global recognition for his professional achievements. Over the course of his career, his work contributed to the national defense and security of the United States and its allies around the world. Now retired, Mr. Sputz is directing his ambitions closer to home. As generous as he is driven, this devoted humanitarian is focused on serving “his neighborhood hospital” and impacting the health of his community. Mr. Sputz and his wife, Eve, both native New Yorkers, moved out to the “country” in the mid-1960s. The couple settled in Bergen County, where they raised a family, established roots and cultivated a genuine, active interest in Chilton Medical Center. “Chilton is our hospital… where we’ve gone for various health issues and where we’d go for a medical emergency,” says Mr. Sputz. “That’s why we feel strongly about supporting it.” Interestingly, he points out, the Sputz family has a history of volunteering at Chilton. His daughter was a Candy Striper all through high school, and now it’s his turn. Once a week, Mr. Sputz faithfully donates his time to conduct patient satisfaction surveys. The work has been fulfilling and enlightening, as it has allowed him to see the benefit of his donations. “Ninety-five percent of the patients I speak with are positive about their experiences at Chilton,” he noted. “It’s good to know that we are supporting the betterment of the hospital.” Admittedly, Mr. Sputz is still acclimating to retirement. But he looks forward to enjoying his many blessings, including a growing family (comprised of three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren) along with a growing commitment to charitable endeavors. Ultimately, he hopes his professional legacy will be paralleled by his philanthropic deeds. And that his contributions help to make our hospital – and our community – stronger and healthier for generations to come. Planning to Make a Difference… Why I Give P lanned-giving lets you address your own financial concerns and challenges while allowing you to create a legacy that will extend the benefits of your generosity far into the future. Ken Stride, a retired business executive and longtime donor to Chilton Medical Center, now understands this well. Ken recently attended a financial and gift planning seminar sponsored by Chilton Medical Center Foundation. The seminar featured Sal Salvo, cofounder of Summit Financial Resources, Inc., who is an expert in the field of family wealth counseling, estate planning and management. The purpose of this seminar was to discuss estate and inheritance tax minefields that could have potentially extreme negative implications on one’s resources and financial bequests as well as impact beneficiaries. Below, Ken shares how he was able to minimize taxes while maximizing assets, ultimately benefitting Chilton Medical Center and advancing healthcare for patients close to home. “We’ve worked very hard in our lives, and if we are fortunate, have earned significant assets that enable us to enjoy our personal lifestyles, contribute to worthy causes and organizations while we are still here, and provide for a meaningful legacy after we are gone,” says Ken. “We want our resources to benefit family and friends, and on a grander scale – charities and churches. However, much of our wealth would be taken away by taxation, so that governments will decide how to use our hard-earned funds, rather than those whom we would prefer to have that benefit. I was especially interested in learning how to best serve multiple purposes, including minimizing taxes that would reduce the net value of my estate, thereby maximizing assets that would be available for financial donations today, and eventual bequests to my preferred beneficiaries, including charities, churches, and personal friends. The federal and estate tax laws are incredibly complex, and are continually changing. An effective estate planning strategy essentially requires professional counseling. In the seminar, Sal Salvo provided insightful alternatives for achieving one’s objectives, beyond anything that would be apparent to the layman. Implementation of a strategy demands that procrastination be overcome, because in important matters time truly is of the essence. Delay could be much more expensive than one might realize. After the seminar, I met with Sal Salvo for a one-hour personal consultation. Together, we reviewed my asset portfolio, and discussed ways to achieve my desired objectives. As a result of that session, I revised the beneficiaries of my IRA accounts, assigned ownership of a major insurance policy, and designated charities and churches to become major beneficiaries of financial and tangible assets, all of which would otherwise result in the government taking enormous amounts through taxation. Best of all, the restructuring will enable me to make annual tax-free financial gifts during my lifetime to friends, churches and charities, including Chilton Medical Center Foundation.” If you want to find out how to achieve your gifting and estate goals while helping to strengthen Chilton Medical Center now and for generations to come, please contact Mary Ellen Loranger, Director of Development, Chilton Medical Center Foundation at 973-831-5363. Basketball Buddies Team up for Breast Cancer Jake Goldberg and Gregory Klepacki are not your typical 11-year-old boys. While most of their friends are gaming, riding bikes and watching movies, these charitably-minded kids have set their sights on a grander pursuit: winning the fight against breast cancer. “Both of our moms had breast cancer and it’s a problem in the world,” said Gregory. So he and his buddy, Jake, decided to do something about it. Last fall, the boys organized a fundraiser at Hillview Elementary School in Pequannock. With help from the school’s principal and gym teacher, they planned a benefit basketball tournament in honor of their moms and all women who have battled or are currently battling the disease. rallied for the cause. Students donated pink-themed baked goods and hand-crafted bracelets to be sold, while families packed the gymnasium to cheer on the fourth and fifth grade players. In one evening, the boys raised $644 – all of which they donated to The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center. Dedicated to every aspect of breath health, Chilton provides compassionate, state-of-the-art breast care services to more than 16,000 women each year. Its comprehensive program combines the region’s top breast specialists with a beautiful, spa-like facility and the most advanced medical technologies and treatments. According to Dr. Michelle Azu, FACS, Medical Director of Breast Surgery, Chilton’s breast health team guides each patient through an individualized, coordinated plan of care, whether it includes a routine mammogram or a journey through treatment, recovery and survivorship. “It doesn’t matter why a patient is walking through our doors…if they’re here for a breast problem or a cancer diagnosis,” said Dr. Azu. “At Chilton, they’ll find caregivers with open arms, smiling faces and a personalized touch that reminds patients we are partners in their care.” The Goldberg and Klepacki families “Many kids come to me with these kinds of ideas, but these boys had the ambition and desire to make it happen,” noted Mike Portas, Principal of Hillview Elementary School. Much to the children’s delight, the entire school community Pompton Plains resident Dawn Goldberg had a similar experience at Chilton’s Breast Center, followed by genetic testing and counseling. When her results uncovered an increased risk of recurrence due to the BRCA 2 gene mutation, Dawn decided to undergo a double mastectomy performed by Dr. Azu. “I didn’t feel the need to trek all the way to New York City for treatment when the hospital I know and trust is right here,” she asserted. “Chilton took great care of me, and now my family and I want to pay it forward.” As far as Jake’s concerned, nothing feels better than doing something special for his mom. Except, perhaps, giving to the hospital that saved his mom’s life. The boys’ donation to The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center touched many hearts while evoking tremendous pride from their parents, their school and community. Gregory Klepac ki and Jake Goldberg “A person once told me that the most important things you learn in school are things that you can’t put in a notebook,” added Mr. Portas. “These kids not only coordinated an event. They demonstrated care and concern for others…and inspired their peers to do the same.” Most admirably, the young philanthropists plan to build upon the fundraiser’s success. “Since my diagnosis, Greg has worn pink as a badge of honor,” relayed Marcella. In fact, at the end of October, when someone noted that Breast Cancer Awareness Month was over, Gregory’s response brought his mother to tears. The Goldberg and Klepacki families could not agree more. “Breast cancer awareness is never over,” he asserted. Marcella Klepacki, RN, a nurse in Chilton’s Labor and Delivery Unit, was shocked when her very first mammogram led to a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis. “It turns your entire life upside down,” she said. “Through it all, everyone in Chilton’s Breast Center was kind, warm and reassuring. I had the works – including an ultrasound and MRI – but the staff was so wonderful that I wasn’t scared and felt everything would be okay.” Four years later, she remains a proud breast cancer survivor. For these determined boys, it’s always a good time to support the fight against breast cancer. If you would like to make a donation to The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center – in honor of these courageous moms or someone in your life affected by breast cancer – please call the Chilton Medical Center Foundation at 973-831-5363. Dawn and Jake Goldberg Our Community Cares Raising Awareness The Walode Chiropractic Group hosted a Wayne Women Supporting Breast Cancer fundraising event to benefit The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center. Dr. Darlene Walode of the Walode Chiropractic Group, who had aided her mother, Jane, through 35 years with four bouts of the disease, organized the wellness event. The program featured a brunch and symposium supporting beauty, health and wellness from the inside out. Over $1,000 was raised for The Breast Center. Sordoni Cares On June 16, Sordoni Construction held its first annual Sordoni Cares Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the Chilton Medical Center Foundation. The event raised $30,000 to support the Children’s Center, a major hospital initiative to combine pediatric emergency and inpatient services in one convenient location. Over 125 golfers and more than 30 sponsors teed off for the cause at the High Mountain Golf Club in Franklin Lakes, NJ. Columbia Bank enhances Breast Care Cecilia’s Angels The Cecilia’s Angels Fund was started by two sisters, Danielle Quaranta and Lauren Parise, in memory of their mother Cecilia, who died of breast cancer. After their mom’s passing, the girls learned that she often provided kind acts for patients whom she met in her workplace, who were facing difficult challenges. Danielle and Lauren decided to pay it forward and created the Cecilia’s Angels Fund at Chilton Medical Center. Through this fund, Chilton Medical Center Foundation provides gift cards for things such as massage therapy, restaurant meals and home cleaning services to breast cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. This year, a total of $6,897 was donated to the fund, bringing the total raised since inception to over $31,000. Boiling Springs Supports Pediatric Clinic Boiling Springs Savings Bank showed its ongoing commitment to Chilton Medical Center with a gift of $10,000 to our Pediatric Clinic, a full-service health clinic that provides health care for the community, regardless of insurance status or the ability to pay. Pictured left to right: Danielle Quaranta, Lynn Case, Lead Mammography Technologist at The Breast Center, and Lauren Parise. Small Donors, Big Columbia Bank donated a $25,000 grant to support Digital Tomosynthesis Mammography, which takes multiple low-dose images of the breast from many angles to create a 3-dimensional image. This new imaging technique, approved by the FDA in 2011, makes breast tumors easier to see in dense breasts, enhances diagnostic work-up of high-risk patients and abnormal mammograms, and makes screening more comfortable. Impact Cadence Bernstein, age 9 of Towaco, raised and donated $253 to the Foundation by selling home-made wristbands. The money went to The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center in honor of Cadence’s grandmother, Ellen Bernstein, who is a breast cancer survivor and former Chilton patient. Provident Bank Continues Commitment to Chilton Medical Center The Provident Bank Foundation generously donated $5,000 towards the purchase of a third ultrasound machine for The Breast Center to help accommodate a growing patient population and treat women faster, further advancing the comprehensive care our staff provides. Master Kim’s Tiger Tae Kwon Do of Kinnelon recently held its annual “Charity Breakathon” and raised $2,628 for the Pediatric Clinic at Chilton Medical Center. The martial arts program, led by Master Yeong Jae Kim, has raised funds for the Pediatric Clinic each year since 2009. Master Kim’s students raise the money each year by being sponsored for breaking blocks of wood. It was a community-wide effort as the students asked neighbors, family members and their parents’ co-workers and friends to Pictured are John Giuliano a help out by donating a minimum of $2 per block broken. nd Mas ter Kim Pictured left to right: Jane A. The beautiful, cozy blankets will help provide comfort to Cancer Center patients during a difficult time. Wayne Girls’ Soccer Teams Up to Kick Cancer They may be rivals on the field, but off the field the girls’ soccer teams of Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley High Schools have one goal in common: kicking cancer. Together the teams raised $3,545 to benefit The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center. For the third year in a row, the teams hosted a charity soccer game and sold t-shirts, pink shoelaces as well as other items to raise funds. Local Women’s Club Gives Back The Pompton Lakes Women’s Club generously contributed $500 towards important equipment for The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center. Co-Presidents Jo-Ann Sisco and Kathy Troast presented the check which helped purchase a much-needed third ultrasound unit to accommodate The Breast Center’s increasing patient volume. Bouquets Brighten Patient Stays This past Valentine’s Day, our female inpatients received a wonderful surprise when Shop Rite of Lincoln Park donated and delivered 70 bouquets of roses to units throughout the hospital. Thanks in part to a blizzard that swept through our area around the holiday, the local supermarket had a surplus of flowers and decided to give back. This kind gesture brought similes to Chilton Medical Center patients and staff alike, making for a memorable Valentine’s Day. Because the store received such a positive reaction, they continued the “petal power” with plants wrapped in spring foil colors for Easter, mixed flower arrangements for Mother’s Day and even more for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Student Council Collects for Kids The Maple Road School Student Council organized a “Flicks for Kids” collection to donate used-DVDs to local hospitals, including Chilton Medical Center. The Maple Road School Student Council, made up of classroom representatives in Grades 3-6, collected the DVDs in the hope that they could be viewed by children being treated at area hospitals. The response from the Maple Road School community was overwhelming, as the DVD donations poured in and overflowed the original collection box. “The ‘Flicks for Kids’ collection has been part of a sustained service learning initiative by our school community to teach the students about the benefits of giving back to the community,” says Maple Road School Principal William Kane. Maple Road School is a Preschool-6th Grade elementary school in West Milford, NJ. Pictured are team moms Robyn Brilliant and Kristen Cavallo presenting the check to Foundation Director of Development, Mary Ellen Loranger. 20th Running of the Apple Chase 5K and 10K On Sunday March 20, runners hit the pavement in support of three local charities, including Chilton Medical Center. Funds raised specifically benefitted the Kathleen Shala Memorial Fund, set up at Chilton Medical Center in memory of Kathleen Shala, a former advanced practice critical care nurse who passed away in 2010. The Apple Chase event raised $3,525 to support critical care and nursing education at the hospital. Making a Splash for Chilton This past August, the West Milford Devil Rays swim team held a swim-a-thon in honor of their head coach’s mother who is currently being treated at The Breast Center at Chilton Medical Center. The result? $500 donated to The Breast Center. Each team member got sponsorships and then swam as many laps as possible in an hour. Together, the team swam a total of 1,952 laps. “We hope that our donation will be able to be a small help to those afflicted with cancer,” says Parent Association president, Tracey Travers. Paint the Towns Pink In October, more than 25 local businesses and organizations teamed up with Chilton Medical Center in the fight against breast cancer. These establishments supported Chilton’s Sixth Annual Paint the Towns Pink event to help increase awareness, and together contributed more than $27,000 to Chilton’s Breast Center. Although the names and faces have changed over the years, one thing has remained constant within the Auxiliary, namely their passion for Chilton Medical Center and commitment to quality community health care. This past year, the Auxiliary presented the hospital with a donation of $165,000 raised through a year’s worth of events, including a Cash for Gold fundraiser, Theatre Night, Queen’s Tea, basket raffle, and Tree of Lights, as well as their signature “Brick Walk” program. In total, the Auxiliary has raised over $4 million dollars for Chilton Medical Center to help fund major equipment purchases, innovative health care programs and important expansions. This group also helps maintain the “community feel” at Chilton Medical Center by decorating the hospital for the holidays, knitting for our newborns and cancer patients, and making decorations for patient food trays.
