What does that mean? Well, the list is long from where I sit, but on June 15, as the final curtain came down on our Professional Division students’ performance of Twyla Tharp’s Sweet Fields to the heavenly accompaniment of the Tudor Choir, we had a lot to be proud of. We have our first Artist-in-Residence in Twyla Tharp ! Twyla will be much on our minds in the coming weeks as we prepare to unveil her third creation and eighth work on our stage, but this residency began one year ago with an All Tharp program presented some 6,000 miles around the world. A warm thank-you goes to Peter and Peggy Horvitz for helping to establish Twyla’s residency. One of those seldom-seen faces belongs to David Brown, our executive director, who has recently announced his intention to step down after 13 years of effective stewardship of PNB. David epitomizes the PNB philosophy of working not for the advancement of the individual, but for the health of the institution. Though he never wants the spotlight, a little recognition is in order. Great art doesn’t happen unless the conditions are in place to make it happen. Pacific Northwest Ballet can thank David for helping us to realize the financial security that allows the art, education, and inspiration to happen. At the close of this celebratory season, we are both proud and grateful. Thank you for being there with us during this extraordinary year as subscribers, single ticket buyers, donors, and volunteers. You were a huge part of our success. We made a concerted effort to return to touring this season with both the entire Company and with smaller chamber groups. Appearances in Italy, Canada, Nevada, and New York connected us with tens of thousands of new audiences. Hearing them roar with approval was not only heartwarming, but reaffirming. PNB has always prized the creation of new work. We offered six world premieres in our 2012-2013 season, choreographed by the inexperienced and the homegrown and some of the most established masters in the world of dance. Our Company dancers contributed six new works to Next Step, closing out a year of unparalleled innovation. Of paramount importance this season was the recognition of those individuals who helped bring PNB to the proud place we hold in the dance world today. To honor our rich history, we celebrated Founding Artistic Directors Kent Stowell and Francia Russell at our Season Opening Gala: First Look. Throughout the season, former dancers returned to PNB onstage and backstage, culminating with two unforgettable reunions for both Company and School. We also put our extensive archives on proud display in the lobby and offered photo retrospectives to our audiences throughout the year. We are so much more than what we put on the stage, with the highest quality affecting everything we do from our lecture programs to our orchestra, our marketing staff to our costume shop, our development department to our faculty, and on and on. We are a company of the first order, a highly respected School, and an effective educator within our community. We are master craftsmen and women and dedicated volunteers. We are so many unseen faces that work diligently to make it all happen. 8 7 Peter Boal As we conclude PNB’s 40th Anniversary year, a brighter economic picture is emerging. We have weathered the storm of the Great Recession due to our continued focus on the five elements of our mission. The Chris Wheeldon World Premiere this past season is a great example of setting new standards for artistic excellence, innovation and creativity. By presenting the neoclassic works of George Balanchine alongside the new great choreographers working today, we continue to attract the most talented dancers, choreographers, musicians, collaborative artists, staff and volunteers. The inclusion of Balanchine’s Diamonds allows us to include professional division students in the performances as we educate and develop dance artists. The varied mix of classic Balanchine with perhaps this generation’s choreographic master, Chris Wheeldon, captivates a devoted, supportive and continually growing diverse audience. And those individuals who have stepped forward to fund these works are illustrative of how we strengthen our financial and organizational foundation. Earned revenue this past year has taken a definite upturn best exemplified with this past year’s Nutcracker where sales exceeded the $4.45 million goal by $500,000. We also exceeded our $2.4 million Subscription Revenue Goal by a modest amount. PNB’s comprehensive investment in audience development and engagement programs, funded through the Wallace Foundation over the past four years, are successfully expanding our audience diversity and means of engagement especially with younger audience members. PNB individual donors continue to step up, best exemplified by PNB’s 40th Anniversary Campaign which challenged PNB donors to increase their giving to support this landmark year. We exceeded our goal in raising more than $500,000 to underwrite the four tours planned in this year, most notably PNB’s return to New York’s City Center after a 17 year absence with Roméo et Juliette and an All Balanchine program; all to critical acclaim. PNB also included an endowment component in our 40th Anniversary Campaign which also exceeded its $500,000 goal by more than 30% - nearly entirely through gifts from current Trustees. And a Raise the Paddle at PNB’s First Look Gala in September raised more than $300,000 and exceeded our goal by $200,000. While contributions growth from Foundations, Government, and Corporate Sponsorships has remained flat, PNB continues to strengthen its Major Gifts Initiative, ensuring sustained contributed revenue growth. 98 Partnering with other Ballet Companies on co-productions continues to be a focus of ours. Recent partners have been San Francisco Ballet, Houston Ballet, and most recently Atlanta Ballet for this past season’s Roméo et Juliette. Strengthening the Board of Trustees through the addition of eight new governing board members this season has broadened the diversity of the board and expanded the age range of its members. Attention to New Trustee Mentors and active and early engagement in committee activities has enhanced the trustee experience at PNB. We recently completed a new Strategic Plan which will take PNB to the year 2018 and beyond. It focuses on four major objectives ranked by priority: Build Financial Sustainability Expand Repertoire and Educational Programming Strengthen PNB’s Fundraising Capacity Strengthen PNB’S Infrastructure Within the first objective regarding Financial Sustainability is the launch of a 50th Anniversary Campaign to substantially increase endowment assets, create sustainable funds for Artistic projects, and pass the Cultural Access Fund legislation and public vote creating a sustainable public funding source for the region’s arts, science, and heritage organizations. The Cultural Access Fund would be a game changer for access to cultural organizations in King and surrounding counties. Let’s get it done in 2014. For year end June 30th of this year, PNB will post a modest operating surplus before depreciation as we have done for eight of the last nine years. We will make additions to our cash reserve which will increase it to $470,000 from its current $40,000. And, as I mentioned earlier, add to our endowment bringing the total invested assets to more than $13.6 million. And so consistent with our mission, PNB continues to strive for highest excellence; we continue to provide our audiences and students with high quality dance experiences; we honor our promises to donors; we seek to manage our affairs with careful planning and prudent decision-making; and, perhaps most importantly, we choose to be optimistic. Sincerely, D. David Brown Executive Director The 2012-2013 season for Pacific Northwest Ballet, was one of great celebration and success. We took every possible opportunity to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our remarkable company, commencing in September with a very successful opening night gala and ending in June when over 62 former PNB dancers took the stage for bows with Peter, Kent, Francia and our current company dancers. I would like to thank those PNB trustees and major donors who, through their increasing generosity, went above and beyond in their support of PNB to assure that the 40th anniversary season was remarkable in every way. These important people and organizations lead by example and inspire the rest of the PNB community to stretch a little further. You will find these important donors in our program listings. They are our corporate, foundation, government, and community partners and our President’s Circle, Stowell Society and Members of the Barre donors. We are fortunate to count each and every one of them as friends. Their generous contributions, together with thousands of other gifts to PNB, coupled with box office support throughout the season, produced $21.5 million of total revenue of which 30% was contributed and 70% earned. It is impossible to talk about the success of our 40th Anniversary Season without thanking PNB’s 250+ employees that touch our organization at some level throughout the year, as well as the ballet’s leadership team and our dedicated board of trustees. The entire PNB family was focused on assuring that our fortieth year was of the internationally renowned caliber you have come to demand through your appreciation of the many, many elements that go in to making a great ballet company. Behind the scenes the business staff worked to leverage the 40th Anniversary Season to build our financial stability. We ended the 2013 fiscal year on a financial high note. In addition to ending the year with a surplus, along the way we added $767,942 in new gifts to PNB’s endowment and $430,000 to the Association’s financial Stabilization Fund. 9 10 In addition to our remarkable season on the McCaw Hall stage, with the generous support of James and Sherry Raisbeck and others, the Company was able to tour to some very remarkable venues during the season: Spoleto, Italy’s Festival of Two Worlds, Las Vegas, Victoria, British Columbia, and City Center in New York. Traveling around the world allowed us to meet new friends and further engage long-standing supporters. It’s unanimous -- audience and critics around the world, loved our company ! But if you know us well, you also know that this is not an organization that rests on its laurels for very long. Before the season concluded we had already begun to talk about PNB’s 50th Anniversary and our grand aspirations for your ballet company. Our sleeves are rolled up, and we’re already hard at work on many of the possibilities that will come our way. Thank you for supporting PNB throughout its first forty years! You, our audience and supporters, have challenged us to do what, at times, feels almost impossible. Through your applause and support you demand and inspire us to reach further. Allow yourself, for a moment, to think what might be possible as we work together over the next decade to take PNB to even greater heights. Thank you for being our dance partners! Sincerely, Aya S. Hamilton Chairman, PNB Board of Trustees PNB Soloist Sarah Ricard Orza and Company Dancers in Kent Stowell’s Swan Lake. Photo © Angela Sterling. The 40th-Anniversary 2012-2013 PNB season showcased a company at its artistic peak, presenting second-to-none performances across the spectrum of classical and modern choreography. Peter Boal’s 8th season as Artistic Director featured six world premieres, ranging from the renowned Christopher Wheeldon’s ravishing and musical Tide Harmonic to exciting creations by past and present Company dancers Paul Gibson, Kiyon Gaines, Margaret Mullin, and Andrew Bartee. Dance icon Mark Morris set a new ballet on the Company for the first time. PNB honored its tradition of emphasizing George Balanchine’s incomparable works, this year with masterful performances of Concerto Barocco, Agon, and Diamonds. We toured the first two to great acclaim at New York’s City Center, along with Jean-Christophe Maillot’s amazing Roméo et Juliette. Two modern favorites returned and never have looked better: In the Upper Room by Twyla Tharp and Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven by Ulysses Dove. Founding artistic directors Kent Stowell and Francia Russell were honored throughout the season, as well as by the Company’s spectacular offerings of their Cinderella, Nutcracker, and Swan Lake. of PNB. It is only through such generous scholarship support that the School attracts the best students nationwide. PNB Outreach programs bring the creativity and excitement of dance to over 20,000 students and teachers annually in 68 local schools spanning 4 counties. They culminate in memorable opportunities for the students to perform at McCaw Hall. The parents tell us constantly of their gratitude for the life-changing impacts on their children. A great arts institution serves its whole community; we invite you to join us by donating to keep these wonderful programs strong. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as Board President for the last three years. The “view” from the position has been incomparably rewarding. As I pass on these duties to David Hadley, I know that our great ballet company, with all our help, will continue to delight audiences and make us proud. I look forward to seeing you in McCaw Hall or wherever the Company takes us. Every year brings change to the PNB Company, as to any vital organization. This past year James Moore received a richly-deserved promotion to Principal Dancer, and super-talented apprentices Jahna Frantziskonis and Elle Macy joined the Company from the PNB School. The two other essential pillars of PNB, namely the School and the Community Outreach programs, continue (like the Company) among the five best nationally, making PNB one of greater Seattle’s most distinguished educational as well as artistic institutions. The School is the foundation of the Company; a majority of the company dancers were trained there in the admired PNB style. The highest-level graduates awed the June 2013 School Performance audience with masterful renderings of Balanchine’s Serenade and Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet plus Twyla Tharp’s Sweet Fields. Among new endowed scholarships this year are those named for PNB trustee Tom Puentes and his wife Gretchen, to support a DanceChance student of proven talent, and a memorial scholarship from the estate of Helen Kloess, long-time and greatly-missed friend. 11 10 Joe G. The new work was set to Joby Talbot’s Tide Harmonic, a score for chamber orchestra that was specially arranged for Wheeldon’s new ballet. Talbot described the score as “… a kind of water symphony that, rather than constructing a poetic or narrative programme inspired by man’s relationship with water, instead focuses on the substance itself, the forces that act upon it, and the energy that flows through and from it.” Tide Harmonic fulfilled an eagerly awaited partnership between the choreographer and the dancers of Pacific Northwest Ballet. Artistic Director Peter Boal remarked: “Having Chris Wheeldon create a ballet for PNB has been a dream of mine since arriving in Seattle eight years ago… As a choreographer, his sense of musicality and invention coupled with his knowledge of tradition and design are unparalleled.” The 2013 premiere of Tide Harmonic was generously underwritten by Jeffrey & Susan Brotman. Morris is internationally recognized as his generation’s most musical choreographer, and his new work takes its name from its musical accompaniment, Paul Hindemith’s cello concerto Kammermusik No 3, Op. 36, No. 2. Morris has received numerous awards for his innovative use of classical music, including the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society (2010), the Benjamin Franklin Laureate Prize for Creativity (2012) and 11 honorary doctorates to date. First Full Company Performances in New York Since 1996 PNB performances at New York’s City Center Theater included a mixed-repertory program of Balanchine’s Apollo, Concerto Barocco, and Agon as well as Jean-Christophe Maillot’s full-length Roméo et Juliette. The three Balanchine works selected for City Center span the first 30 years of Balanchine's choreography: Concerto Barocco (1941), Agon (1957), staged by PNB’s Founding Artistic Director, Francia Russell, and Apollo (1928), staged by Peter Boal. Ms. Russell worked closely with Balanchine as a dancer in numerous works, including Concerto Barocco and Agon, the latter in which she was a member of the original corps de ballet and later performed in the First Pas de Trois, re-choreographed for her by Balanchine. Ms. Russell's staging of Agon is unique in that it predates later changes Balanchine made to the ballet. She also worked as a ballet master for Balanchine. Mr. Boal first performed Apollo with New York City Ballet in 1989 and later danced it for his retirement performance in 2005. Music Director and Principal Conductor Emil de Cou and the entire PNB Orchestra joined the Company on tour. Opportunities to perform in renowned international cultural centers are vitally important to the growth and recognition of Pacific Northwest Ballet’s artists, and offers audiences across the globe access to PNB’s distinguished style and varied repertory. Nevada Ballet Theatre’s Inaugural Season This past October, critics and audiences alike were thrilled when the Company toured to Las Vegas to perform George Balanchine’s Diamonds in celebration of Nevada Ballet Theatre’s inaugural season at its new performance home, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Last season, James and Sherry Raisbeck presented a generous challenge gift, encouraging others to join them in support of the Company’s ambitious touring plans. We acknowledge important additional tour support from Peter and Peggy Horvitz, Jeffrey and Susan Brotman, and Patty Edwards, who were inspired by the Raisbeck Challenge Grant. 2013 VAIL INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL TOUR Special Thanks to H. David Kaplan & Mrs. Patty Edwards for underwriting the tour At the end of July 2013, Pacific Northwest Ballet returned to the Vail International Dance Festival in Colorado for the fourth time since 2007. Thirty-three Company dancers and 18 artistic staff, from musicians to wardrobe staff to stage crew, enjoyed the opportunity to perform alongside dancers and companies from around the globe at the Vilar Center in Beaver Creek, and the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail. PNB performances included Christopher Wheeldon’s Tide Harmonic and After the Rain pas de deux, the second act of Kent Stowell’s Swan Lake, and George Balanchine’s Agon, Apollo, Concerto Barocco, and Serenade. We are grateful to both H. David Kaplan and Mrs. Patty Edwards for their part in generously underwriting PNB’s 2013 Vail Tour to help ensure its success, and to PNB supporters Phil and Lesli Schlaepfer and Bob Benson, each for providing warm and generous hospitality to PNB while on tour in Colorado.
