Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 31, 2014
CLERGY CORNER The Christ and the Cross
In the Gospel this Sunday, we find Jesus continuing
his encounter with the disciples. Last week we heard Peter
gave the answer to the question: “Who do you say that I
am?” Peter said: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God.” Peter answered correctly because he received the
revelation from God. It was not human intellect that led
Peter to the right answer about Jesus’ messiahship and
divinity. It was his conformity to the mind of God.
In the Gospel for today, Jesus explained to the
disciples what type of messiah he would be. It was
definitely not the messiah or savior according to the norms
of the world. If we are asked to list down the characteristics
of a savior that the world expects, I am sure they will be
somewhere along these lines: a savior that can solve all
problems in the fastest possible time; a savior who could
give food to all hungry families immediately; a savior who
could provide shelter to every single homeless man,
woman, and child; a savior who could cure cancer and other
incurable diseases, etc. In other words, the world looks for a
fix-it-all type savior, a magician, a superman, a savior that
will not only save us from suffering but he himself is above
all forms of suffering.
But Jesus presented a messiah according to the
ways of God. He said that he would be arrested and he
would suffer greatly. He would be put to death but on the
third day he would be raised up. This must have caused a lot
of disappointments to the disciples. And Peter, the one who
gave the right answer, now said: “God forbid, Lord! No
such thing shall ever happen to you.” Peter pleaded that
God spare Jesus. May God not allow this type of
messiahship to happen to him!
The Peter who received God’s revelation has now
moved to a different level of understanding. Jesus
recognized that and confronted him: “Get behind me,
Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as
God does, but as human beings do.” Jesus reminded Peter
that when he was judging by God’s standards he got to the
truth – he saw the truth about Jesus, about his messiahship,
about his identity, about his mission. Since Peter has shifted
to the standards of the world he became the stumbling block
that Jesus will trip and fall on.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so
are my ways higher than your ways, my thoughts higher
than your thoughts.” (Is. 55:9) The way of God, the way of
self-denial, the way of dying to self and renunciation may
not be so appealing to us, it may not make sense to our
human logic, but it is the only way to true life, to lasting
peace, to lasting love, to true happiness, to heaven.
What is the difference between a follower of Christ
and a philanthropist or a member of the NGO? It is the
cross. There is no Christ without the cross. There is no
authentic disciple of Christ without the cross.
“When we walk without the cross, when we build
without the cross and when we proclaim Christ without the
cross, we are not disciples of the Lord. We are worldly. We
may be bishops, priests, cardinals, popes, all of this, but we
are not disciples of the Lord.” (Pope Francis)

HOSPITALITY
In our pastoral plan we stated that it is our vision
at OLPH that people feel welcomed and encouraged to get
involved and as a result of that vision we have begun a
new ministry called "Hospitality". If you attend the 8:30 or
10:00 a.m. Sunday Masses, you may have been greeted
with a friendly smile and welcome. You may have also
visited the "Welcome Table", which is out by the garage on
the west side of the church. This is just the start for this
ministry, but in order for us to reach more people and be
available at all the Masses we need your help. We are
looking for people, young and old, to serve at the different
Masses to welcome our friends, neighbors and guests.
"It all begins on Sunday" and what is better than a
warm smile and greeting as you enter the worship space.
We are asking for less than an hour a month so this is a
great ministry to join if you feel a bit overwhelmed with a
busy schedule or if you are volunteering for the first time
and just want to get your toes wet. This is a great way to
serve our parish, so join us.
Please contact Ed Archer for information. at
[email protected] or (661) 259-2276 ext. 675.

OLPH FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT
Dear Parishioners,
This is another of a series of regular “financial
snapshots” related to our parish’s income and
expenses. The Lord is generous to us; please be
generous in supporting the mission and programs
of our parish family.
Our average weekly expenses are $30,000.
For the weekend of August 23-24, our collection
was: $20,466.00.
In recent weeks we have listed some of the major
expenses related to our parish. To summarize that
information, last year the cost to our parish of
three categories of expenses – 1) property taxes,
2) fire and liability insurance, and 3) utilities –
totaled $275,413.19.
If our collections average $20,000 a week, it takes
17 weeks simply to pay these three items. That is
one third of the 52 weeks of the year. If our
collection averages $25,000 a week (which we
have not done), it would still take 11 weeks to
cover these few expenses.
This is one of the many expenses that our weekly
donations help defray. Thank you.
Fr. Craig
REPAIRS TO CONFESSIONALS
The indicator lights in all three of our confessionals have
been repaired. When the priest is in the confessional, he
will turn on the light that says “pastor” or “associate.”
When a penitent is in the confessional, the small “button
light” near the entrance door will be illuminated. If that
light is on, please wait until the person ahead of you
completes his or her confession and exits. Thank you.
OLPH's GOT TALENT!!!
Singers, Musicians, Dancers, Comedians, Jugglers, etc.
On Sunday, September 21st, at the Barbecue, the talent of

between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM, in the Juipero Serra
Conference Room, in the Pastoral Center. Each act will
audition for a panel of 5 judges, who will determine who
will be invited to perform at the Barbecue.
For information and/or to set up an audition, email or call

STEWARDSHIP, COMMUNITY & EVANGELIZATION
DOING GOD’S WILL
The language of Jeremiah as he addresses his
yearnings to God—he says, “You duped me, O Lord,
and I let myself be duped” (Jeremiah 20:7)—indicates a
close and personal relationship with God. It is one the
prophet obviously cherishes despite the derision and
reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a
similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult
challenges presented by following God’s will, Jesus is
not deterred. Giving up our own worldly cares and
dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more
than a fair exchange for doing the will of God.
The only way to do God’s will is offer our whole
selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the
Romans: “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans
12:2a).

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 31, 2014
Dios liberará a Jesús.
(Is 55:9) El

principales gastos relacionados a nuestra Parroquia.
semanal ayudan a sufragar. Gracias.
- Padre Craig
