D
kandidate in hulle onderskeie provinsies was, eerder by die Universiteit
Yaseen Carelse, SRverteenwoordiger by ISUS, het tydens
’n gespreksforum by Pulp Cinema dit
amptelik in Maart vanjaar geopen
oor ’n aantal onderwerpe uitgespreek
word.
“Dit is die verantwoordelikheid
van die Moslem-studente om hulle
stemme te laat hoor en om seker
te maak dat die universiteit hierdie
kwessie as ’n ernstige problem onder
die Moslem-studentegemeenskap aansien,” het Peck gesê.

SRc takes up the fight against a culture of silence
Red tape against rape
KARL KEMP
A
S THE majority of the country
celebrated Valentines Day last
Thursday, the student body of
Stellenbosch University was playing
an active role in the awareness campaign against rape.
The Rooiplein played host to a
fluctuating number of students who
had silenced themselves with red and
black duct tape, meant to symbolise the prevailing problem of silence
amongst rape victims.
A pre-event media statement stated
that the protest was intended to “send
a very clear message that any sexual
violence will be opposed with an unwavering unified stance.”
The students were enabled by
members of the SRc. Following talks
between Clinton du Preez: Chairperson and Ziyanda Stuurman: Critical
Engagment and Leadership Development, the SRc conceptualised and
spearheaded the initiative.
They were active on the scene as
suppliers of duct tape and flyers, in
addition to a roaming loudspeaker.
The so-called “silent protest” fell
squarely between the national initiative Black Friday, that took place the
following day, and a smaller protest by
Erica, whose residents had worn black
the previous day.
National interest in the cause has
flared since the widely publicised assault and gang-rape of Bredasdorp
youth Anene Booysen earlier this
month.
Stuurman stated that the duct tape
idea lends from the “One In Nine”
campaign of Rhodes University. The
name refers to the statistic that only
one in nine woman that are raped in
South Africa are willing to reveal it.
According to Stuurman, the project
“came together” in only two days, as
response and support from both the
University itself and the local media
was overwhelmingly positive.
“I want students to know that the
protest is not the only initiative we are
planning to get students to talk about
South Africa’s silent culture of rape.
We didn’t go in wanting it to be the
only thing we do and so there really is
more we want to do to spark the very
necessary conversation about our national crisis and also about how prevalent it is in Stellenbosch without us
even realizing it,” said Stuurman.
The Centre for Student Counselling and Development has a 24 hour
crisis hotline that students are encouraged to make use of if they have been
the victim of sexual assault or rape.
The service is provided by professionally trained staff who are linked to
the CSCD. They can be contacted at
082 557 0880.

Alleged tik sale at club
A STUDENT at the University
has levelled complaints against the
staff of popular student bar, Aandklas, accusing them of having a nonchalant attitude towards the sale of
tik outside the venue.
Upon inquiry, the student involved stated that she had seen an
alleged male student smoking a
glass pipe of “something that had
no scent” with a group of homeless
people on a mattress. She stated
they left after she threatened to
phone the police.
Aandklas has stated that although they do their best to prevent all crime in the nearby area,
it is nearly impossible due to their
proximity to the taxi-rank, and that
it is a difficult task despite their
co-operation with the municipality
and police.

mentor sessions in which mediation
acts as the primary motivation for individual prosperity.
The initiative is the first of its kind
world-wide and involves a focus shift
in the mentoring programme from
problem-solving to ‘positive psychology.’ Mentor sessions have thus far
been considered a means for assistance in academic and social affairs
and some students have failed to see
the need for mentor support as they
seemingly cope on their own.
Although students may feel that a
university qualification is sufficient,
SAS have deducted that the corporate
world also demands operational life
skills and wellness beyond mere academic merit.
A survey conducted by 500 randomly selected employers ranked
qualification 20th in a list of 20 desirable attributes, whilst attitude, enthusiasm and amiability featured in the
top five, according to SAS.
Cilliers, project leader and Director
of the Centre for Student Counselling
and Development says, “We live in a
conceptual age where we should focus
on the ability to ‘do’ in addition to the
ability to ‘know’.” His research has
shown that only 20% of individuals
reach their full potential. He consequently asked, “Why settle for merely
surviving when you have the potential
to flourish?”
In response, the SAS has incorporated the concept of Wellness into
the mentoring portfolio and mentees
are encouraged to develop all six dimensions of the ‘wellness-wheel:’
physical, emotional, intellectual, occupational, social and spiritual. This
approach utilises the process of me-
diation, a recurring theme in the University’s Listen, Learn and Live (LLL)
initiative. The idea is that through interactive mentor sessions, students can
discuss any of the six dimensions and
consequently learn from others whilst
listening to shared experiences.
Clinton du Preez, Chairperson of
the SRc, stated: “This new approach
shifts the focus from remedy to flourish.” He describes the process as a
means to “help you optimise your potential instead of just sticking a Bandaid on your problem.”
Monica Santana, assistant in the
coordination of mentors for the Centre of Student Communities, said: “If
Stellenbosch can produce graduates
with not only academic merit, but as
well-rounded and balanced beings, we
can truly call ourselves a world-class
university.”
Despite the correlation of individual wellness with academic performance and employment, students
have yet to realise the programme’s
full potential.
A private coach, Carine de Beer,
noted that in the past, male residences
and PSOs have shown less interest
than their female counterparts as a
result of their indifferences towards
peer-to-peer mediation. In addition,
Clinton du Preez stated that “sustainable change does not happen easily.”
Yaseen Carelse, SRc head of Student Wellness, responded with encouragement for all students to change the
general conception that participation
in the wellness programme implies
that one is ‘unwell’ or in need of help.
Rather, he says, “participation is
about making a conscious decision to
flourish.”

In 2012, SU ranked third in
Afica on the Webometrics list after
UP and UCT.
Clinton du Preez, SRc Chairperson, stated that “It is exciting
that the hard work of our students
and academic and management
staff to further our University as
a world class institution is finally
paying off. I believe it is a strong
indicator of where we are headed.”

SUSPI settles out of court
NICOLE BOUCHER
AN OUT of court settlement was concluded on the 22nd of January with the
former chief executive of the Stellenbosch University Sport Performance
Institute (SUSPI), Gugu Ntuli.
An investigation last year revealed
the company to have suffered substantial irregular financial losses. Die
Burger has reported that Ntuli received
a packet of R300 000, and that the cost
of the investigation has totalled approximately R3 million since 2011.
SUSPI has claimed they are unable
to disclose any information as to what
the settlement entailed. The directors
decided on the recent out of court settlement as a means of reaching finality
in the processes of SUSPI’s restructuring.
As reported by Die Matie last year,
after accusations began to surface of
irregularities, the chief executive officer of SUSPI requested that an inquiry be carried out by an external legal firm. A top auditing company was
also appointed to conduct a forensic
audit.
The findings revealed that theft
and/or fraud, negligence, and noncompliance with policy and procedures had cost the company up to R1
million. One person was dismissed
from SUSPI’s employment and six
others received written warnings,
some of which were final warnings.
SUSPI’s poor financial performance prompted InnovUS, the sole
shareholder, as well as the board of
directors to undertake the comprehensive restructuring in order to put the
company on a sound financial footing,
as well as ensure SUSPI’s continued
existence and prosperity.
As part of the restructuring, the
Physiotherapy and Youth Sports Initiative divisions were absorbed into
Stellenbosch University to function as
self-paying units. The functions of the
Human Resources and Finance divisions were also contracted out to the
university.
According to prof. Leopoldt van
Huyssteen, chairman of the SUSPI
board, the overall restructuring has
been completed and portions of the
company could be saved.
“The board now wishes to first
stabilise the company so that it can
become profitable again, but intends
expanding it in future again and with
proper consideration of the university’s strategic Sport Plan. A few new
positions need to be filled shortly,”
Van Huyssteen said.
The Chris De Beer scandal
The university was also faced with
financial controversy when it reported
in November 2012 that Chris De Beer,
Deputy Director: Student Fees, had
been suspended and an investigation
opened following allegations of finan
cial misconduct. Eyewitness News
reported that De Beer had allegedly
transferred funds from student accounts into a personal bank account to
draw interest.
Professor Tobie de Coning, Chief
Director: Strategic Initiatives and Human Resources, told Die Matie that De
Beer has in the meantime admitted to
being guilty of alleged serious noncompliance with financial policies and
guidelines.
According to De Coning, De Beer
had also offered his resignation, and
the termination of his employment
relationship with the University was
brought into effect on 31 December
2012. The independent inquiry into
the extent and nature of the irregularities is still ongoing, and depending on
the outcome the university will decide
on further appropriate action.
“University management wants to
emphasise that impeccable administration and the integrity of all university systems are non-negotiable, and
will not hesitate to take appropriate
and active steps against any person
who through unlawful conduct brings
this commitment into question,” De
Coning said.

“Dead boer is a good
boer” says Potch SASCO
THE AFRIFORUM Youth branch
of North-West University (Potch)
has instituted a case of hate speech
against the chairperson of political
youth organisation SASCO, Potchefstroom branch.
Jason Mfusi had allegedly
posted on his Facebook profile that
“a good boer is a dead boer”, Beeld
reported on 7 February. This was
confirmed by AfriForum following
their complaint, which was lodged
at the campus human rights committee. The committee is headed by
an independent attorney.
Chancellor Herman van Schalk-
wyk has stated that the University
expects all students to respect the
rights and fundamental values of
all people, as enshrined in the national Constitution.
In another post, Mfusi said:
“Must admit at the NWU Potch
campus I have suffered immense
suppression and segregation, due
to my affiliation to Sasco. Yet u
ask me if I would give it up for better treatment, my response will be
‘never’.”
sowetanlive.co.za reported that
Mfusi has stated that he would not
delete his comments.
Tyre Fire at Fort Hare
TYRES and cars were set alight in
the road and entrances blocked at
the University of Fort Hare’s Alice
Campus, in the Eastern Cape, on 7
February as students staged violent
protests.
The students were allegedly dissatisfied with, among other things,
a 90% increase in residence fees,
the lack of hot water and electricity in residences, and the implementation of a security system on
campus.
iol.co.za reported last week
Wednesday that campus was still
closed, following the arrests of
more than 21 students who have
been released on warning in the
meanwhile, and that the protest
would continue despite an order
by the Bhisho High Court.
Police instructed the crowd to
disperse, but students responded
by throwing stones, bottles and
sharp objects, reports timeslive.
co.za. The report goes on to say
that police had responded by firing
rubber bullets at the ground, and
that claims of stun grenades being
used are incorrect.
Students were yesterday expected to return to campus and
gather at the sports complex to
sign a declaration stating that they
would abide by the rules and regulations of the university. The majority of students allegedly took
part in the protest.
L
OCAL musician Karlien van der
Walt and other concerned members of the public gathered at the
former site of the Stellenbosch Market
on 8 February in a show of support for
the informal traders.
They had recently been evicted
and relocated to Bergzicht taxi rank by
Stellenbosch Municipality.
The peaceful protest sought to
stimulate discussion aimed at finding
a solution to the current plight of the
traders, as well as raise public awareness of the potential consequences for
the local community and the economy
if the market were to be shut down. A
microphone and speakers were set up
at the site, which the traders and others participating in the protest used to
communicate their ideas to the public.
A petition was also handed over to the
municipality’s director of public safety, Patrick Oliver.
The trading site, which had been
operating on the corner of Bird Street
between Checkers and the Rhenish
Church for nearly two decades, was
deproclaimed in early January by
Stellenbosch Municipality, following
complaints from the Rhenish Church
that the traders were dirtying the area.
The traders deny this, and have also
said they never sold drugs and that the
market had been a safe area. Since the
15th of January the informal traders
have been without a source of income,
as they have been unwilling to trade at
their new designated site at Bergzicht.
Nazia Karriem, one of the traders
who has earned a living off the market since 1996, explained that safety
concerns and the location of Bergzicht
were the primary reasons for the traders’ reluctance to trade there. “It’s not
safe. I am too scared to walk there,
let alone work there. That is the sentiments of everybody in this market,
everybody at the taxi rank’s market
as well. They say it’s unsafe. We want
to work, and we’d prefer to work this
side of town,”
The informal traders had approached the Cape High Court asking to be temporarily reinstated at
the Checkers trading site until a solution could be found. “While the High
Court is deciding where the next site
will be where they can trade, they have
to be able to work,” said Van der Walt.
She explained that up until then, every
hearing that was postponed meant an
added week in which the traders were
unable to generate income.
According to a report in Eikestadnuus, due to financial constraints the
traders have decided that if the municipality finds a suitable alternative
place for them to trade, they would not
continue with their court applications.
TSR turns around resignation troubles
MEGAN DAMON
THE TYGERBERG Student Council
(TSR) has appointed a new DeputyChairperson. Alta-Marie Bekker takes
up office to fill the vacant position left
by Raafiq Ely, whose resignation from
the TSR in October last year became
effective in November after having
been asked earlier to leave his post.
His resignation follows that of Jonathan Oettle in September last year.
The reason for his resignation was
due to the unexpected workload and
responsibility that came with the position of Deputy- Chairperson, and his
subsequent alleged inability to commit
to office. Ely stated that he would not
allow the position to jeopardise his final year as a medical student.
Zahid Badroodien, Chairperson of
the TSR has agreed that “the academic
workload Tygermaties are exposed to
does not allow for final year medical
students to make an adequate contri-
bution to the Tygerberg Student Union
as their responsibilities and time are
largely spent in hospital, thus making
it difficult to focus on TSR duties.”
Badroodien has taken this opportunity to shift and shape the TSR in
order to make sure that the student
council can function to its full capacity. Furthermore, portfolios have been
reshuffled so that the right talents are
utilised in the right portfolios.
Clinton Du Preez, chairperson of
the SRc on Stellenbosch campus, believes that it would be beneficial for
Tygerberg to count leadership development as one of its main priorities.
Du Preez also believes that institutional support from the Faculty of
Health Sciences is vital, and that in order to move forward the support structures for the Huis Komitee and for
the TSR members would need to be
evaluated and perhaps even improved
in order to prevent such incidents in
the future.
The TSR’s five key focus areas
in which they wish to excel remain:
Transparency and Visibility, Participation, Student Development, First
Years and Continuity.
Badroodien stated that “this cannot
be done with members on a council
who do not wish to be there. We now
have a brilliant group of individuals
who work well together for the betterment of all students and the environment to which we are exposed.
“With a more united council after
enduring their very tumultuous inception, the TSR will strive to serve the
students of Tygerberg and to vociferously fight for our students so that
our voices are not lost in the drone of
bureaucracy our institution is flooded
in,” he stated.
The TSR hopes to receive the support that these leaders require and are
focusing on student development and
leadership, as well as critical engagement, to ensure the success of these
student bodies and prevent such incidents in the future.

Free Wi-Fi back on track
MYKEL VAN RENSBURG
T
HE Stellenbosch free Wi-Fi
saga continues as the second
phase of the project went live in
late January this year, extending coverage to Ida’s Valley, Kayamandi and
Cloetesville.
The development takes the initiative one step closer to its goal of converting Stellenbosch into the first town
in South Africa to provide free Wi-Fi
to all its residents.
This process has not progressed as
smoothly as originally planned, and
the implementation has been much
slower than expected.
According to mybroadband.co.za,
the core Wi-Fi network has already
been in place since April 2012. After
the core network had been established,
it was then the municipality’s task to
place repeaters on high points such as
telephone poles and lamp posts, which
boost coverage and signal as the project expands, but this duty was impeded by multiple issues.
mybroadband.co.za reported that
in April 2012, Stellenbosch councilor
Pieter Venter said “the Wi-Fi network
was live in the CBD and that the next
phase involves extending the network
to the greater Stellenbosch area over a
six month period,” but that “virtually
no progress has been made on the rollout of this project, and the blame game
seems to have started as to why this
project is not a success.”
An official Stellenbosch Municipality report details funding, and the
debate surrounding the placement of
the repeaters as being among the primary set-backs to the project’s progress.
However, an expert close to the
project allegedly stated that no funding is required from the Municipality
for infrastructure or the purchasing of
equipment.
According to timeslive.co.za, Kayamandi High School is among one of
the first schools that will benefit from
this project.
The accessibility and progress of
the initiative appears to show great
promise for the future of all Stellenbosch residents, specifically that of
local school children in impoverished
areas whose education will benefit
from internet access.
Accessing this service is intended
to be as simple as opening the Wi-Fi
services on your device and clicking
on “Stellenbosch Free Wi-Fi”.
It promises to empower students,
local businesses and learners alike,
providing a capped 1 megabyte per
second line.
WHEN THIS matter first came to my
attention, I giggled; then I laughed,
and finally experienced the inevitable
fit of rage.
The ANC had taken the liberty of
proposing a tax on graduates. A tax on
graduates from higher education institutions; a tax on us! The unspeakable
audacity of such a ludicrous resolution
made the back of my teeth chatter in
astonishment.
Luckily, the resolution of a graduate tax, proposed at that lavish celebration masquerading as a conference,
Mangaung, was hastily labelled “not a
firm resolution” by the ANC. Clearly
there are still a few brains left in Parliament. DA Youth leader, Makashule
Gana, expressed himself thusly: “It
would mean an extra payment on top
of their income tax,” – now that’s the
kind of thinking we need some more
of; ridiculously obvious common
sense. You can’t help but think that
were it not for the various dissenting
voices from youth organisations as
fiercely diverse as DASO, SASCO
and AfriForum Jeug, the ANC would
have been less inclined to sweeten
their sour proposal.
There are many students, particularly those from disadvantaged communities, who end up graduating with
a lot of study debt, having taken out
student loans to pay for them in the
first place. Looking at starting salaries for post-graduates, graduate tax
would mean you’ll have just worked
extremely hard for at least three years,
just to have all merit taken away from
you, along with a chance of sufficient
housing.
If this tax law were to be implemented, how many already struggling
matriculants would actually enrol in
any higher education institutions?
Such a law would be the equivalent of
taking away ice from a polar bear: the
poor bear is already losing so much
of it at such an astonishing rate. Now
you want to take away even more of
its natural habitat? Actually, this is the
perfect metaphor for the entire South
African economy.
When you think about it, in a country like ours, the government should
actually be paying more of us to study,
because heaven knows our country
needs it.
We are seriously lacking professionals in a lot of critical areas such as
education. Although the government
apparently invests a lot of money into
the development of education, we’re
not really feeling the difference personally. Besides, one would think that
the government would not repeat past
mistakes and put such a tremendous
amount of pressure on the youth by
depriving them of basic, fundamental
rights guaranteed to us by our constitution. Does anyone recall the Sharpville incident? I’m just saying, we’re
not exactly the age category you want
to mess with.
To conclude, in summarised form:
Students deserve more opportunities,
unburdened and unfettered by something as obviously selfish as a tax on
graduates. It might work in the U.K,
but they don’t struggle with the same
deplorable state of base education and
corruption that we do.

STUDENTELEWE
Sophia Maria Louw
STUD APPEAL:
It all started with Versace’s Spring/
Summer show 2012. The design
house left the crowd swooning over
embellished Grecian fabrics dripping
in the ultimate stamp of the punk-rock
generation, studs.
Photos: SOPHIA LOUW
Celebrities and bloggers alike instantaneously adopted the look. From
the red carpet to the pages of Instagram, outfits and accessories were
given a severe makeover. As a direct
result of the Versace show, street fashion advanced one of the coolest and
edgiest trends seen in recent seasons,
creating an onslaught to the senses.
Mostly contrasted on faux-leather,
denim or velvet, the metal accessories
are round, conic or pyramid shapes
that threaten to puncture anyone who
dares to approach.
Studs and spikes have been part
of the rock and motorcycle subculture since Alice Cooper left school for
the summer in 1972. Their studded
vaudeville costumes became iconic in
their attempt to convey a tougher and
theatrical take on rock ’n roll, breaking free from the Woodstock ideals of
peace and love. Youths in America and
London embraced the look, portraying
a sense of rebellion and revolt not seen
before.
Thanks to the likes of Christian Louboutin, Valentino and Marc
Jacobs, studs and spikes have been
piercing through the fashion scene
for two seasons and it doesn’t seem
like this trend is going anywhere any
time soon. These accessories are no
longer reserved for the underground
hard metal fans in our periphery. The
trend is all about the austere contrasts
in texture and colour – the shiny metal
against a toned down pallet of black
or beige.
Use them to toughen up an otherwise feminine silhouette. However,
unlike our heavy rock counterparts, it
is best to keep studs and spikes minimal. The key to wearing this severe
trend is to accessorize wisely. What
makes it so exciting is that it is absolutely versatile. Studs and spikes can
literally be placed on every piece of
clothing; from bags to shoes to bodices and headbands, collars to phone
covers to bracelets and sunglasses, a
subtle addition of the trend automatically enhances a fashion forward ensemble. They can effortlessly be added to dark pallets as well as the prints
that are all the rage this season.
If the idea of dangerous dressing
doesn’t quite make you rivet with excitement, try its sister-in-law trend,
haute hardware. This is basically the
excessive use of “heavy” accessories,
usually in the form of gold or silver.
The necks of all fashion savvy girls
are adorned with Gothic-glam encrusted necklaces that force notice and
attention, whether on the Rooi Plein or
the banks of the Champs Elysees.
As is the case on many occasions,
this trend does portray the inherent
sexism in fashion. Spikes and studs
may only be worn as apparel by women who do not belong to any motorcycle gangs. In no manner or way is
it ever acceptable for a man to adorn
these styles, unless auditioning for the
Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Be aware that head to toe clothed
in spikes, studs and hardware make
these trends lose their lustre immediately, and may lead to you potentially
being mistaken for a member of Hell’s
Angels. Wear in moderation to keep
the look classy and on trend. You will
be engendering curiosity and controversy in equal measure. Just refrain
from injuring yourself.
TRENDS AND TIPS
– Studs aren’t limited to your clothes, so go wild with spiky jewellery, sling bags and
shoes.
– Don’t be afraid to mix studs with other trends. Toughen up the pastel-trend by
adding bold spikes or make your prints even more daring with a few studs.
– To balance out the roughness of the look, stick to soft, natural make-up to keep
yourself from looking like a true rocker.
– But if you do feel like going all-out, add a bold red lip to give your studs even more
of an edge.

Pump some adrenaline by rafting on the Orange River
A truly riveting adventure
MIA CONRADIE
I
f you’re not sure what to busy
yourself with during the upcoming Easter holiday, why not gather
a group of friends and go canoeing on
the Orange River for a few days?
It’s the perfect way to get in touch
with your adventurous side while admiring our beautiful country’s breathtaking views. Canoeing down a stretch
of South Africa’s longest river with
good company is not something you’ll
quickly forget.
You don’t need to be an experienced rafter to sign up – in fact; the
only requirement is a moderate level
of fitness (and a sense of adventure!).
According to three rafting companies,
Umkulu, Felix Unite and Bushwhackers, the stretch of river they canoe
down is graded level 1-2. It is suitable
for the whole family, which means
that if 8-year old girls can do it, so can
the average Matie.
This part of the Orange River runs
through the Richtersveld community
reserve. In general, you will paddle for
6 hours a day – 3 hours in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. However,
this depends on the overall fitness of
the group, the weather and the water
conditions.
The overnight accommodation
sites don’t force you to completely
‘rough it’ – they provide hot showers,
tents and three meals a day. Some sites
even offer a bar and internet facilities.
At Felix Unite’s base camp, they
offer a pool, ATM machine, bar, shop
and restaurant. Don’t let these luxuries
fool you, though, because the stunning
sunsets and surrounding birdlife will
make you feel very much in tune with
nature.
From November to the end of
March the temperatures can get up
to 40 degrees, but from April it tends
to cool down slightly. However, a hat
and sunblock are very important items
to remember.
Most major rafting companies advise that you bring along the following
items: a sleeping bag, blow-up or rollup mattress, a personal first aid kit,
cutlery and crockery, toiletries, clothing, an umbrella, soft drinks and your

Hier leer jy jou wyn ken
ADRIANA LOUW
niks beter as om in Stellenbosch se
historiese kern wyn te proe en meer
daaroor te leer nie. Almal is baie gretig
Baie
besoekers het by De Oude Bank Bakkerij ingeval vir pizza – altyd ʼn goeie
keuse.
Dit was ooglopend dat almal wat
daar was, beïndruk is deur die Stellenbosch Street Soiree. Dit was ʼn fees vir
almal en daar was gesinne, studente,
en selfs ʼn dosent of twee.

Root 44 Market

Take a trip to Thailand
STUDENTELEWE REDAKSIE
WILANDRI BASSON
The Root 44 market can be seen
before one hears about it. Located
along the R44 (hence the name Root
44), it is not to be missed. The market is buzzing right from the parking
area.
The market is situated on the
Audacia Wine Estate opposite the
Mooiberge farm stall. The market
is indeed child friendly and boasts a
variety of children activities, which
don’t really cater to students. It is,
however, more than just a funfair.
There are two large marquee tents
filled with clothing, food and other
trinket stalls. A bar is also located at
the end of the market. Root 44 has
a lot of potential with the beautiful
setting and some interesting stalls,
but still feels a bit disorganized and
like a local church bazaar. The mar-
ket will benefit from easy-going,
gourmet food and local designers
showcasing their work, such as the
stalls at the Neighbourgoods market
at the Old Biscuit Mill.
All this said and done, the market definitely produces some delicious food
stalls. The
clothing
stalls and
second hand
book stall,
on the other
hand, was
disappointing. Worth
a
mention is the
pizza stall
next to the
bar, named
‘Who invited the creeks’. The base is thin and
crusty, just like a pizza base should
be. However, at R50 each, they are
pricy. Regular pizza toppings are on
the menu, as well as some interesting variations such as fillet and onions. One of the guys working at the
stall was kind enough to go through
the market offering tastings, which
definitely attracts customers to the
stall.
Ice-cream addicts will appreciate the current trend of homemade
ice cream that can be seen at most
markets. Keeping in trend, Root 44
also boasts an ice cream bar. Flavours like strawberry, balsamic and
black pepper attract attention and at
R10 and R20 for a small and medium scoop respectively, they are
worth a taste.
The market also offers Audacia
wine tastings, local beers at R25 to
R30, bacon and egg croissants and
loads more delicious sweet treats.
If you hate markets,
just skip through to the
opposite side where
you will find the bar.
The location and décor of the bar is perfect
and is reminiscent of
Mozambique.
They
also sell local beers as
well as wine and other
liquors.
The market is open
on Saturdays and Sundays between 09:00
to 15:30. Expect live
music on most days
and more than enough parking and
seating. The market has great potential, but still needs some time to
develop, after which it looks to be a
promising option for spending your
weekends.

DOES THE idea of breathtaking
beaches, bustling cities and major
markets filled with hours of bargaining tickle your fancy? Then join the
tons of Stellenbosch students who
have ventured to the East and discover
what Thailand has to offer.
Your first step is finding an agency
to work through, or planning the trip
yourself. Even if you decide you want
to take the planning on yourself, visit
portant to decide when you will go.
November until February is the best
time to go explore Thailand; it rains
the least and the heat is bearable. Festivals like Loi Krathong take place in
this season and are a must-do.
The third step involves some convincing and negotiating, but will be
worth it. Get as many of your friends
to join in on the trip and build memories that will last a lifetime.
The sooner you book, the cheaper
your flights will be. Flights average
around R8000, 00. After you have
a few agencies for brochures and tips.
STA is a great travel agency to work
through. Located in Church Street,
STA has a group of travel fanatics who
will gladly assist you with any questions you have.
Your next step is to choose a trip.
Northern Thailand offers you mountain rivers and elephant treks, while
the central area gives you Bangkok
and jungle adventures. The most popular area, the south, leaves you with
white sandy beaches, monkeys and
blue waters.
When planning your trip, it is im-
planned and booked your trip, get
ready for an unforgettable experience.
Thailand is definitely not a place for
anyone looking for anything average.
Tips on saving money include doing everthing the way locals do it.
Stay away from eateries catering to
tourists, since they charge much more
than the local diners. Also, find out
when happy hour starts and take serious student advantage of it.

Organiseerders praat oor hoe RAMfest 2013 gaan lyk
“Dis RAMfest nommer 1
hierdie, ’n clean start”
CHARL ALBERTYN
V
anjaar word die eerste behoorlike RAMfest gehou – so sê
die organiseerders van een van
Suid-Afrika se grootste alternatiewe
musiekfeeste.
Die broers wat die fees bedryf,
Dawid, Henk en Janneman Fourie,
skaaf die afgelope tyd aan die fees
waar (onder meer) Bring Me The Horizon, Pendulum, Rise Against en As I
Lay Dying aanwesig sal wees.
RAMfest 2013 (7-10 Maart) is
Dawid vanuit hul kantoor by Klein
Libertas Teater; “ons het ’n awesome
venue gekry, Circle of Dreams by
Riviersonderend” voeg hy by.
Waar die fees voorheen by Nekkies
Holiday Resort in Worcester gehou
is, en laasjaar by Cape Town Ostrich
Farm, vind die fees vanjaar in Riviersonderend plaas, 170 km buite Kaapstad. Anders as laasjaar se alles-opeen-dag-formaat, sal dit vanjaar weer
oudergewoonte vier dae lank wees.
Die uitleg van die fees lyk vanjaar
ook anders; Dawid verduidelik dat
die kampterrein onder bome sal wees,
saam met die Boom! Stage, en dat die
fees se hoofbedrywighede op die oop
veld sal plaasvind. Henk voeg by dat
ewe entoesiasties oor RAMfest 2013
Dawid.
Die idee van RAMfest as ’n blote
metalfest is ook geoormerk vir verandering. “Omdat daar nie baie vir die
metalheads gecater word nie, vat hulle
RAMfest en hulle make it their own,
is”. Dawid voeg by: “Ons is nie net ’n
Dawid.
As daar gekyk word na interna-
sionale musiekfeeste, mik RAMfest
Seconds To Mars).
“Download se lineups is ongelooflik, maar ongelukkig het ons nie die
voete daarvoor in Suid-Afrika nie –
nog nie” erken Dawid.
Henk meen egter dat ’n fees soos
Download Festival in Suid-Afrika in
die toekoms nog moontlik kan wees.
“Festival-going culture, dink ek, groei
nou verskriklik. Dis amazing. Ek dink
jy gaan dit eventually kan doen, maar
dit (’n fees soos Download) is waarnatoe ons werk” sê Henk.
Laasjaar se RAMfest moes, weens
praktiese redes, in afsonderlike sessies
dis hoe dit was, en ons is nou weer by
die oorspronklike plan” voeg hy by.

lank was RAMfest 2012?

Young theatre collective Rust Co-Opera- Sixto Rodríguez returns
tive looks toward Woordfees, Ireland
LOUNETTE LOUBSER
MARIJKE TYMBIOS
IN 2012, Penny Youngleson and Philip Rademeyer took the South African
theatre industry into their own hands,
creating a “playspace for young theatre-makers wishing to create new
South African theatre works.”
They started Rust Co-Operative,
the theatre collective, in order to bring
to the stage a new bag of tales never
acters who meet on an online dating
website.
“As part of the research for this
show, Penny actually joined an online dating site and went on a series of
blind dates, which were increasingly
horrific” says Philip.
With this in mind, the show touches on the almost pathetic nature of human longing, whether it is for a true
sense of self and identity or whether it
is for romance.
Roelof Storm.
When they get back they will pack
their bags yet again, taking Expectant
and The View to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
The View was inspired by an American pastor’s recent comments that
gays and lesbians should be contained
in an isolated enclosure and ultimately
killed off.
It portrays a trapped young man
having conversations with people
told before. Based in Cape Town,
these two young people write, direct
and produce their own shows.
Their first three productions, The
View, Expectant and Lie entered the
South African public eye last year and
intend to please again this year. But
they also have a new show up their
sleeve: An(T)oniem, which will debut
at the Woordfees in March 2013.
What has been referred to as an
‘anti-romantic comedy’, An(T)oniem
tells the story of two eccentric char-
With a neurotic sense of humour
(similar to Woody Allen’s early
works), themes of sex and strong language, 21st century audience members
between the ages of 16 and 30 will
find this show to be a refreshing take
on theatre.
After showing An(T)oniem at the
Woordfees, this dynamic duo will be
setting off to Ireland to show The View
at the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in May, taking with them
their two performers, Ella Gabriel and
from his life and mind, addressing notions of loss, grief, memory and hope.
With the potential of showing
again in Cape Town later this year, The
View has had many sold out shows and
is undoubtedly a strong candidate for
representing South Africa’s younger
theatre industry internationally.
South African fans can look forward to seeing a whole lot more Rust
Co-Operative productions this year,
starting off in Stellenbosch with An(T)
oniem at the Woordfees this year.
“SUGARMAN, won’t you hurry,
‘cause I’m tired of these scenes.” A
voice heard, with the shadow of one
of the most mysterious and esoteric
figures in rock ‘n roll history.
The gig held at the Grand West
arena saw more than ninety per cent of
the audience over and above the middle aged summit, but the atmosphere
nonetheless exuded youthful anticipation as the crowd waited to behold one
of the greatest musical legends of their
era.
For many South African fans, his
music was the soundtrack to their upbringing. In SA, Rodriquez has enjoyed almost post-mortem stardom
without having any idea of the extent
of his fame in the Southern Hemisphere.
Completely unknown in his native
country, he has reached fame on our
shores since the release of his debut
album Cold Fact in the early 1970s.
After the announcement of his arrival, the red satin curtains dropped
and there he stood, donning his classic
ensemble complete with a pair of dark
glasses, a clean black suit, finished off
with his slick locks cascading down
from under a fedora hat.
And then it all started with the infamous bass line of “I Wonder” and the
entire audience seemed to lapse into
adolescent hysteria, with an innumerable amount of shrieking ‘tannies’ and
grooving ‘ooms’, singing and swaying
their way into a state of nostalgic euphoria.
Tears were shed as his voice rolled
over the verses of “Crucify Your
Mind” and “Forget It”, the song which
he performed just before his supposed
suicide (as the outdated conspiracy
theory goes).
The audience was blessed enough
to hear “Sugarman” performed a second time round as part of the encore.
Adding to the magic of the evening, Rodríguez worked in an excellent cover of Bob Dylan’s song “Like
a Rolling Stone”, as he succeeded in
manipulating his voice to emulate a
unique version of that distinctive ‘Dylan-drawl’.
His comments and crowd interaction amplified the immediacy most
spectators felt during the show, making it one of the more personal and
intimate gigs that SA fans have been
lucky enough to witness.
Those who have seen the documentary, Searching for Sugarman
would know that Rodríguez’s story is
one of the most intriguing tales in the
Western music industry.
American-born Sixto Rodriquez
has claimed a series of peculiar titles;
the man coined as a prophet, folk musician and Detroit-based construction
worker.
He embodies the figure of the
mystical Samaritan which Bob Dylan could only have dreamed of being
taken for.
As this transcendental experience
came to a close, the crowd seemed
completely dumbfounded and starstruck as they plunged back into the
‘real world’, after experiencing the
mythical ‘Sugarman’ himself.

STAR TISSUE Rock legends Red Hot Chili Peppers recently played their first gig ever in Cape Town. This fourpiece, starting out in Angeles in the early 80s, awed Cape Town crowds on 5 February.

Legendary rockers’ SA debut
RHCP set Cape

MARIJKE TYMBIOS
A
lt rock heavyweights Red Hot
Chili Peppers have had devout
Capetonian fans counting days
until these legendary musicians arrive
on our shores to play their first ever
gig in the Mother City.
Finally, Tuesday 5 February 2013
arrived in all its saturated glory. Even
though the ever-howling Southeaster
violently whipped many a fans’ Red
Hot Chili Peppers t-shirts about, the
dramatic weather added to the exhilarating atmosphere.
As the sun set in the east, the show
started with what could be counted for
as the most controversial opening act,
consisting of our very own Yolandi
Vi$$er, DJ Hi-Tek and NINJA - also
known as Die Antwoord.
A couple of songs in, RHCP bassist
and stark raving madman, Flea, joined
the set and played bass for the South
African alternative rap crew.
With Die Antwoord’s gig done, the
crowd bustled in rowdy and anxious
anticipation for the Chili Peppers explosion to start. And finally, with an
electric surge of pure Peppers energy,
lead singer, Anthony Kiedis bounded
on stage.
Making for a memorable introduction, he slyly commented on the dubious aromas emerging from the golden
circle area. Crowd acknowledgement
and interaction were key factors in the
success of the show.
RHCP’s Australian-born bassist
(rated best in the world) made a point
of addressing the audience between
each song, proclaiming his love for
our Cape Town, Dy Antvord (Die Antwoord) and simply portraying the exact amount of juvenile enthusiasm you
would expect from his character.
They played their most celebrated
hit singles, such as ‘Under the Bridge’,
‘Dani California’ and ‘Otherside’, between a number of their funk-infused
jams such as ‘Suck My Kiss’, ‘Around
the World’ and ‘Give It Away’ to which
the crowd responded effervescently.
A personal favourite would be
Kiedis’s crooning to ‘I Could Have
Lied’, a song written about his failed
romance with Irish musician, Sinead
O’Connor.
Replacing the long-time iconic guitarist and backup vocalist, John Frusciante, Josh Klinghoffer brought some
young blood into their repertoire, offering a refreshing take on their infamous sound, delivering solidly as an
instrumentalist and performing a number of unique riffs and superb solos.
The show ended with a blackout
bang, leaving the Capetonian crowd in
awe of these crazed, long-standing and
blatantly talented musicians.
Since starting out in the early 80’s,
they’ve become matured versions of
their former ‘funk rock heroes of heroin’ selves and they’re burning their
way into middle-aged stardom.

Plush plays Stellenbrau Concert Series
KLT gets cosy
ANRI DELPORT
ine craft brewers’ Stellenbrau
once again teamed up with
the Klein Libertas Theatre
in support of local music. Last week
Wednesday saw such an installment
featuring the local acoustic rock band,
Plush.
The performance on Wednesday
was preceded by a ‘speed-dating night’
organised by Maties FM for all those
“singles” dreading the big V-Day.
What started off as a bunch of individuals awkwardly standing around
pretending to be busy on their phones
ended with clusters of people filling
the night air with laughter and conversation.
Many of these participants stayed
for Plush’s performance and were later
joined by avid Plush fans who insisted
on buying the band tequila.
Even before the band strummed
the first chords, it became apparent
that Plush is easy-going, interactive
and is all about making music and enjoying it.
Elliot encouraged the audience
to take up “prime seats right in front
of the stage”. Plush did not play to a
crowd, but rather had conversations
and encouraged singing along.
The set consisted of a little bit of
‘F
the old and the new from all four their
albums, All that is Should Be (2003), A
Few Blinding Views (2005), Rage On
(2008) and Plush (2011).
Requests were shouted out by the
crowd which included “Far Beyond”
which Elliot wrote when he was only
16, and has not sung in 12 years, but
fans sang it out and the guitars soon
followed.
They came across as personal and
warm and their music contained driving grooves that encouraged people to
sing along.
As the evening progressed, and
the fifth song echoed from the stage,
couches were being carried outside
creating an intimate atmosphere.
The evening ended on a high and
Elliot stated that it was “awesome
to be in Stellenbosch.” It has been a
“long time since we’ve been to Stellies, but we’re planning to be here
more often during this year. In the
meantime, drink tequila.”
Many of the audience nodded their
heads in accordance with this. It is
clear that many Maties are not yet acquainted with Plush, as Elliot stated it
is strange, after all these years, “to still
sing to Plush virgins”.
For the next few weeks to come,
Klein Libertas Theatre will be hosting
bands every Wednesday, in collaboration with Stellenbrau craft beer.
Exhibition streets ahead
ISABELLA KUIJERS
/A WORD OF ART’s current exhibition Ways of Seeing showcases the
work of artists whose materials of
choice are primarily public walls and
spray cans.
The exhibition marks the completion of a project curated by Ricky Lee
Gordon aka Freddy Sam (Cape Town)
with international artists in residence
KNOW HOPE (Tel Aviv), Gaia (NY),
Franco JAZ Fasoli (Buenos Aires)
The name of the exhibition, probably unintentionally and somewhat
ironically, shares a title with the book
by aesthetic theorist John Berger.
On this particular outing we pulled
up in front of an aerosol eagle by ‘DAL
east’ and, plying the usual Woodstock
stragglers with sour worms and small
change, we found our way to the enormous Bauhaus block that has been
converted into a centre for all things
bespoke, hip and holistic; The Woodstock Exchange.
The building boasts the factory
outlet of Honest Chocolate, Starling
and Hero Bicycle Café and Rosetta
Roastery among other artisan-al establishments.
/A WORD OF ART is on the
ground floor and from the gallery
one can peek into the studios of the
resident artists. On the wall of one is
printed: “Removing the greyness from
the soul of the city is the job of artists,
musicians and poets”.
When one thinks of graffiti coming
into the gallery there is a psychological element of the streets having ambushed the sacred realm of academic
artistry.
However, driving into the neighbourhood it seemed to be the other
way around.
One got the impression that the art
had been unsatisfied hanging on walls
indoors and that all the murals had escaped and were sunning themselves
on every available building, billboard
and embankment.
/A WORD OF ART sums itself up
as “an artist-run project space celebrating New-brow aesthetics and practices, with the intention of creating immersive experiences over white-wall
gallery exhibits.”
And it does just that. Graffiti, possibly because of its democratic origins
and lack of structured curation, has
had its share of tacky slogans and trite
social comment.
However, this marriage of street art
and fine art established a sensitivity
and immersion that is more than the
sum of its parts.

Straatligkinders: Bouwer Bosch praat
FRANCO HAVENGA
bestee in hierdie ruskans, waarby
Dans Dans Lisa, Moses Metro Man,

Treffers soos “Duiwel Dans”,
“Voete van Klei” en “Sketse” word
deur ’n goed afgeronde album ondersteun en die tema van liefde wat wen
bly ʼn sentrale fokuspunt.
Alhoewel Bouwer met nederigheid
voel “as jy vir so lank ’n break vat dan

daarin is ‘n gemene faktor.
die ontvangende of uitdelende kant.
Dame studente is gereelde
daar nie ’n manstudent in sig is nie. Wry wing
nie.

Education before tennis courts, clubhouses
I was rather irritated with some of the comments made in the article published in Die Matie
on 07 February 2013 [“Meesterplan” hampers
parking: Residences not satisfied].
Basically, these individuals were just moaning like spoilt children about the loss of their
residence parking space, tennis courts and
clubhouses as a result of the construction taking
place at the university in order to provide more
student accommodation.
Honestly, I feel providing students with accommodation in turn provides more students
the opportunity to study at an institution. Surely,
something like parking space, tennis courts and
clubhouses should not be prioritized over education? Many students come from other provinces
and countries to study at SU and therefore providing them with accommodation is therefore essential.
I do understand that parking is also essential
for staff and students who commute daily to the
university and I hope that a better plan will soon
hierdie projek.
menteer is.
be put forward for them. However, if a student is
fortunate enough to own a car as well as have
accommodation in an SU residence, he or she
should count themselves lucky.
Students should learn to spare a thought or
two for their fellow students who do not own cars
and are unable to commute daily and for whom
accommodation in a residence is their only option.
I wish students would learn to complain less
but voice their opinion on things that really matter.
– Irritated
The aftermath of the Simonsberg Met
The amount of litter strewn across the Simonsberg lawn at the end of the Simonsberg Met on
Friday was absolutely shocking. By the time the
crowd had eventually begun to thin, the area
more resembled a landfill than the front lawn of a
university residence.
Not only does it show a lack of respect for the
university’s premises (or any premises for that
matter), but also a total disregard for those who
have to clean the mess up after everyone has left.
I also could not help noticing one group of students make a game out of throwing empty beer
cans, as well as a banana peel, over the fence
and onto the race course, which they appeared
to find very entertaining.
Would providing more rubbish bins at venues
during events perhaps encourage students to
walk the few extra metres?
Or do we students honestly care so little that it
is simply too much effort to drop an empty bottle
of beer in the bin as we pass by on our way to
buy another?

Balans in die weegskaal van die lewe
KLITSGRAS
DAAR’S iets omtrent ’n rigiede,
onwrikbare lyn wat aanloklik

Miskien is dit vir
jou die dubbelstreep

die pad wanneer jy
haastig is, of daai

eksamenboek
wat
rillings teen jou ruggraat afstuur. Feit is,
Of is ons

Balans is egter ’n woord
bevind.
My motivering strek nie bloot sover as
my muse dikwels eers in die middernagtelike
my lê en wink). Inteendeel.
spoed of entoesiasme nie.
Dit pla my dat ons geskik het vir gemak;
proses gaan jy misken jou enkel verstuit as
A country where fear is a reality
SWEET & SOUR
Black Friday. What does it mean? Have
we really become a society where we need to
wear black on a particular day, to express
our anger and disgust at the abuse and
rape of women and children in our
country?
Every day South Africans wake
up to screaming media headlines of
yet another rape, another murder,
crime and more crime.
The most recent incidents include
the rape and murder of 17-year-old
Anene Booysen who was brutally attacked, a granny’s rapist falls asleep on her bed, two
more rapes and murders in Cape
Town, and the list goes on
and on. But according
to
government
crime
is
decreasing.
Yeah right!
Even closer to
home in the beautiful Stellenbosch, students
have been attacked, stabbed
and robbed while walking the secure route at night.
A place where students, and
even families, should feel
safe and secure when walking about, has become an
unsafe and fearful space.
Have we really become a society where
the normal citizens feel the need to firstly,
own a gun, and secondly, keep the weapon
next to their bed or even under their pillow?
» I think the real problem with
our society is our mindsets.
What ever happened to seeing
the good in others?
The reality is that everyone lives in fear in this
country. So, I ask you, what do you do if you
don’t even feel safe and secure in your own
home anymore? You drive in fear, you walk

or what is really to blame for this? The spate
of crime in this country, or we the citizens of
this country who choose to raise awareness
the one day and look away the next?
Despite the constant reporting by credible
news sources, some still felt the need to throw
insults at the victims involved.
Maybe an unfortunate incident, but the
fact is we are all potential crime victims in
this country where the fear of crime towards
women, children and even men are an overwhelming reality.
So will the idea of wearing black change
our mindsets, thoughts and the reality we live
in? I don’t think so.
Although it might raise awareness, I think
it’s a waste of time, as we are all aware of
the realities and issues around us, but mostly
we just don’t care. Raising awareness one day
and ignoring the issue the next, will definitely
not change the crime-prone society we live in

fear of becoming a victim, how can it even be
justified?
Neither deserved it, but this is the reality
today…
Awareness should be raised and action
should be taken every minute of every day.
Not only on a national awareness day such as

Deon Meyer
Hy dra eenvoudige
jeans, ’n wit t-hemp en ’n swart baadjie. Deon Meyer herinner my
Miskien herinner hy my dalk selfs aan Bennie Griessel. Grof.
Effens onafgerond.
Hy blyk min illusies
oor sy beroep te hê. “Ek dink nie regtig daar is iets soos skryftalent nie. Enigiemand wat baie lees kan ook skryf. Ek dink nie dit
is so ’n uitsonderlike ding nie.” Ek is effens skepties. Deon Meyer
aanhou skryf, gaan later ’n gehoor opbou.”
Boeke is soos enige ander handelsmerk. Dit is maar hoe die proses
werk.”
“Utopia bestaan
ek. “Ek dink die muse is ’n klug. Die muse is ’n verskoning vir
lui mense. Daar is nie so iets nie.” Daar is wel dae wat die regte
woorde hom ontglip. “Dan sal ek miskien net een paragraaf skryf.
Dit is steeds vordering, want dan het jy deur ’n skryfprobleem geworstel.”
rigting gaan neem.” Hy verduidelik skryf is soos om met ’n motor
in die nag te ry. “Jy weet min of meer waarheen jy op pad is, maar
al wat jy nou kan sien is die deel wat die ligte voor jou verlig. En as
“Daar is verskriklik baie druk
Waarom is hy
juis so gewild? “Ek probeer om Bennie so menslik as moontlik te
skryf. Ek dink dit is waarom lesers by hom aanklank vind. Hy is
net as ’n kamee-karakter in Feniks geskep.
Dit raak egter sosiaal effens van ’n probleem, voeg hy by. “As ek op ’n Vrydag of Saterdagaand saam met
vriende kuier, weet niemand waarvan ek praat as ek oor my werk
gesels nie!”
Sy vrou, Anita, deel darem in sy fiktiewe wêreld. Sy lees die
hoofstukke soos Deon hulle klaarmaak. “Dit is vir my lekker dat
sy ten minste weet in watter wêreld ek verkeer. Ek gebruik haar
dit so. Ek wil nie in ’n posisie wees waar ek konstant moet wonder
of ek iets moet skryf of nie net omdat my kinders die boek gaan
boek, Kobra. “Twee lyfwagte word in ’n gastehuis in Franschhoek
dood aangetref.
vermoed hy is ontvoer.
glad nie so werk nie. As jy jouself bind gaan daar soveel interessante moontlikhede in die skryfproses by jou verby.

Malmesbury.
Twee spanne,
naamlik die Victoriane en die Maties,
is ingeskryf.

Oorwinnings oor Hamlets, Young

Maties face tough competition at Surf Champs
PETER TURNER
THE iNAugurAL Billabong SA interclub Championships kicked off on
Saturday the 9th of February along the
nippy shores of Yzerfontein, a town
almost 100km off Cape Town’s city
centre. The Maties club joined surfers from all around the country who
flocked to the West Coast event to represent their respective clubs in the cold
but contestable 3 foot surf.
The contest was not an individual
event but a tag team event and was
scored as such. Each team comprised
of five surfers and were given 45 minutes of competition time during which
each team member could surf for an
amount of time allocated to him/her
which was decided by each respective
team. Each surfer was allowed a maximum of three waves, two of which
were scored.
it was not an immense surprise that
the SA interclub Championship trophy
and bragging rights went to the J-Bay
Boardriders Club. Hailing from the
legendary Jeffrey’s Bay, home to arguably the best right hand point break in
the world, it is no small wonder that
the team succeeded in snatching the
win by an impressive margin after
having amassing a total score of 164.6
points.
Durban based Wave Wizards Surf
Club achieved second place, while
third place went to the hosts of the
event, the West Coast Boardriders.
Surfers representing the Maties
team included Charl De Waal, Kurt
Dreyer, gabriel Steyn Botha, Peter
Thorpe, Beaulah Buitendag, and manager Henrique Cilliers.
The team put up a decent performance, but were up against tough
opposition in some of the best young
surfers in South Africa. Maties put up
44.9 points in their first heat, narrowly
missing second position which would
have granted them advancement into
round three.
instead they were placed in round
two during which the Maties team
performed better, scoring 54.7 points.
Maties ended off placing 9th out of
the 10 teams overall, perhaps a reflection of them being slightly out of their
depth at this level.

Siblings
dominate
at Dusi
PETER TURNER
THE Kime siblings made history in
Durban on Saturday, becoming the
first siblings to succeed in winning the
individual men’s and women’s titles at
the Unlimited Dusi Canoe Marathon.
Not only did each sibling win their
event, but both set records too.
The Dusi canoe marathon is a
gruelling 120km event which, unlike
other canoe events, requires competitors to be equally fit out of their boats
as in them. At some stages of the race
they need to run with their boats, adding a whole new dimension to the
sport.
Currently both studying Engineering as Stellenbosch, brother and sister
Lance and Robyn Kime opted for different routes leading up to the finish
line.
While Robyn took and kept the
lead from the 5km mark, powering
through the race and surging to a very
convincing victory, Lance only took
the lead in the last 10km of his race.
The first few days of the men’s race
did not look in Lance’s favour as underdog Sbonelo Zondi took an early
lead, sustaining his position amongst
the forerunners for the first two days,
aiming to become the first black paddler to win the K1 title in its 62 years
of existence. Unfortunately for Zondi,
he ended up taking a swim and separated from his boat with 14km to go,
after which he was passed by the likes
of Lance and two-time flatwater marathon world champion and 2005 Dusi
winner Hank McGregor.
The Maties student knew that he
couldn’t relax with McGregor on
his tail and pushed hard to win in an
overall record time of eight hours and
twenty nine seconds. Lance describes
the last push as follows: “I paddled
faster than I have in my life. It was
probably the loudest crowd that I have
ever heard and that just raised me to a
whole new level.”
Robyn’s near flawless rhythm
was brought to a halt at ‘Hippo Rapid’ where she almost broke her boat.
Despite the incident however, Robyn
managed to finish as the fastest woman of the day and end the event in a
time of 9:07.16, obliterating the previous record of 9:25.36 set in 2007.

GET OFF MY BACK! NMMU’s Madibaz were more than a nuisance to the Maties team on Monday night, as they matched up to them in all facets of play.
Maties battle past brave Madibaz
Maties emerge from third round with their unbeaten record intact, but only just
RICKY KLOPPER
NB Maties dropped their first
points of the 2013 Varsity Cup,
failing to collect a bonus point
against NMMU’s Madibaz in a match
that was much tighter than many may
have expected.
Despite frustration from supporters at Maties’ failure to comfortably
defeat the supposed “minnows” from
Port Elizabeth, Chris Rossouw and his
team will be glad to emerge from this
round’s matches as the only unbeaten
team left in the competition.
The Madibaz kicked off the match
in 3rd place on the Varsity Cup log,
also boasting an unbeaten record after
the first two matches. If their draw and
win over UCT and Wits respectively
were not enough to make supporters
sit up and take notice of them as possible Varsity Cup dark-horses, their
performance against the top-ranked
Maties certainly was.
Maties’ second home match of the
season started similarly to their first,
F
as their less-fancied opponents immediately put the home side under pressure. Early in the game, the Madibaz
seized control of possession and impressed with their ability to retain the
ball. Maties defence, a feature of their
season so far, continued to appear almost unbreakable against phase after
phase of attack, as it had during their
previous two matches.
Maties absorbed the early pressure
applied by NMMU and, from their
first period of prolonged possession,
were able to score off a driving maul
through hooker Neethling Gericke.
Flyhalf Dean Grant converted to give
Maties an 8-0 lead after 11 minutes.
NMMU came straight back at
the Maties defence, pinning them
deep into their own half after the try.
Madibaz controlled possession and
territory throughout the first half, but
the Maties defence remained resolute. Eventually, in the 37th minute,
NMMU were able to get reward for
their efforts as replacement lock Ulrich Pretorius dotted down from close
range. Justin van Staden, NMMU’s
flyhalf, converted to level the scores
going into halftime.
The Madibaz continued to make
headway with pick-ups and drives
from close quarters early in the second
half. When they had sucked in enough
Maties defenders, Justin van Staden
attacked the blindside and gave leftwing Logan Basson a simple run in to
score, only for the try to be disallowed
for a forward pass.
This seemed to serve as a wake-up
call to the Maties side, as they played
with greater intensity to enjoyed periods of prolonged possession and territory for the first time in the match.
Maties piled on the pressure as the
match entered its final quarter and
were eventually rewarded when Reniel Hugo went over in the left corner
in the 70th minute after multiple phases. Replacement flyhalf JH Potgieter
failed to convert, and a tense final ten
minutes ensued.
Again, the Madibaz were determined to hit back at Maties, and were
soon deep in the Maties twenty-two.
NMMU won multiple penalties and
kicked for the corner, only for Maties
to halt their attack illegally. Eventually, referee Quinton Immelman grew
tired of Maties’ infringements and
gave try-scorer Reniel Hugo a yellowcard.
NMMU continued to attack the
Maties line, but despite their one man
deficit, Maties managed a last-gasp
turnover and bundled the ball into
touch to seal a hard-fought victory.
