2010 Abbott House Annual Report
ABBOTT HOUSE Annual Report 2010 OUTREACH Dear Friends, Just as it always has, Abbott House embraces change. We are constantly evaluating our services and adjusting them to better meet the needs of those in our care. We work closely with foster parents, biological families and sister agencies to ensure safe transitions. We do our best to keep up with the newest technology so that our records are accurate and easily accessible. We listen to the families and children who receive our services and improve upon existing programs. But at the core of all of these changes is our commitment to changing lives. PHOTO: DAVID FISCHER PHOTO One example of how Abbott House adapts to current needs is through our Bridges to Health Lower Hudson Program— a new and comprehensive program for families designed to help with the challenges they are facing and with the objective of seeking to reduce the amount of time their children spend in foster care. This program gives families tools to succeed by offering extra support and access to resources in their communities. We have also opened an intimate home setting in New York City to care for and help rehabilitate juvenile delinquents. Our trained staff works closely with these young men each day to help reintegrate them into the community. In addition, those with developmental disabilities who call Abbott House their home continue to flourish. Our programs center on building independence and life-skills, and have given so many adults with disabilities a chance to grow. PHOTO: DAVID FISCHER PHOTO Some of the changes we are implementing may appear small in the context of all that needs to be done to serve children in need. At the same time, it is precisely that concern for detail that has made Abbott House a respected organization in service to families and children. Every Abbott House program is carefully designed and managed with the support and safety of our children and people with developmental disabilities in mind. Helping families is the cornerstone of our work. Thank you for helping make our work possible. Warmly, Claude B. Meyers President & CEO Joseph M. Pastore, Jr., Ph.D. Chair of the Board Memberships & Affiliations Partner Organizations Business Council of Westchester Child Welfare League of America Council of Family & Child Caring Agencies Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies Mid-Hudson Coalition New York State Association of Community & Residential Agencies United Way of New York City New York State Office of Children & Family Services New York State Office of Mental Health New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities New York City Administration for Children’s Services Dutchess County Department of Social Services Orange County Department of Social Services Putnam County Department of Social Services Rockland County Department of Social Services Suffolk County Department of Social Services Sullivan County Department of Family Services Ulster County Department of Social Services Westchester County Department of Social Services CHILDREN & YOUTH For Children & Teens in Foster Care Growing up isn’t easy. And growing up in foster care can be especially difficult. We recognize the overwhelming challenges facing our foster care youth today. In response to what may seem like “the impossible”, we work with them to create plans and services, tackling each issue as it comes. Our Campus and Group Home programs give youth a chance to live in a family setting with other youth their age while focusing on what they choose. So often in foster care, youth do not feel they have control. But these group settings give residents structure under the careful supervision of staff while they focus on school, sports, job training and more. Services to Expedite Permanency is a program that works to remove barriers that prevent children in foster care from reuniting with their families. Our Preparing Youth for Adulthood program teaches teens life skills like how to find housing, apply to college, start a job search, and more. The Mentoring program gives children in foster care the unique opportunity to connect with an adult in a meaningful way. This program links an adult volunteer with a child in a oneto-one relationship, which can help to improve school grades, cultivate interest in positive activities and increase self-esteem. Our work is extensive and relies on a team approach. Our staff combines their professional leadership with the readiness of families who want to heal. Together we create a tapestry of support, guidance and opportunity. 651 children served by Abbott House in a foster care setting in 2010 2010 Children & Youth Program Highlights We exceeded the goal of 40 adoptions set by ACS for the 17th review period 105 families received post-adoptive services and 97% remained intact 179 parents and children received preventive services and 95% remained intact In 2010, 26 youth were enrolled in college FAMILIES For Families in Foster Care Serving hundreds of children in foster care every day, it is important that we extend our services into the corners of each community we serve. Whether that means finding foster parents for children and teens in New York City or Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, Ulster, Rockland, or Westchester counties; teaching biological parents skills that will help them reunite with their children throughout lower New York; holding “family team conferences” in the city so parents and staff can talk about issues and progress; providing medical, mental health and dental care in the Bronx; offering preventive services to help at-risk families avoid foster care in Dutchess County; giving newly adoptive parents support to ensure a permanent adoption in Orange, Ulster, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess and Westchester counties; or giving families a second chance through the Bridges to Health programs in the New York metropolitan area and Lower Hudson Valley region. Our Foster Boarding Home program helps match children with a caring foster parent. If a child has special needs, he or she can find a foster family through our Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home programs. All foster parents are given 24hour access to support systems so that emergencies can be diffused, questions can be answered, and families can grow successfully. Bridges to Health continues to provide support services to children and families in foster care. Whether it is health care integration, skill building, planned respite, in-home support or any of the other family-oriented services, Bridges to Health remains an important tool in helping children achieve permanency. 2010 Family Services Highlights 57 children and teens forged meaningful relationships with a mentor Services to Expedite Permanency helped remove barriers to reunification for 165 youth – a 20% increase from the previous year 141 children and families received services through Bridges to Health, up 23% from 2009 426 children received services through our Bronx Foster Boarding Home program; 71 children through our Bronx Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home program; and 154 children through our county Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home program 20% more children were adopted in 2010 than 2009 DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED INDIVIDUALS Dispelling Disabilities For 19 years, hundreds of people with developmental disabilities have called Abbott House their home. But more than just shelter, we have welcomed and fostered the talents and many unique abilities of so many adults. Our Self-Advocacy program gives people with developmental disabilities, or consumers, a voice. Participants are encouraged to lobby Albany to speak about issues that are important to them and their peers. Self-Advocates also learn and fine-tune leadership skills, team-building skills and participate in job trainings. Day Habilitation programs offer activities to consumers that embrace their creativity and recreational skills while building community awareness. The Abbott House Special Olympics gives athletes a platform to practice their sport of choice; to reinforce friendships with current housemates; and to forge new relationships with peers from other homes. As an agency, we have many responsibilities for those in our care and feel very strongly that one of those is to empower persons with developmental disabilities. The Special Olympics allows us to do that. We conscientiously provide around-the-clock care for each individual in our Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program. By treating each individual with dignity and respect, we help them achieve independence. 105 consumers received direct care from Abbott House in 2010 2010 SPDD Program Highlights A total of 16 SPDD residences operated by Abbott House 40 consumers participated in Day Habilitation programs 25 consumers were Self-Advocates COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT More than 100 golfers put on their game face and teed off at the Elmwood Country Club in White Plains. The event raised over $70,000; an accomplishment that would not have been possible without veteran supporter USI Northeast and the many contributions of sponsors, vendors and friends. Naming Abbott House as their 2011 philanthropy, the Business Council of Westchester’s Rising Stars Alumni group has taken a serious interest in exposing our youth to career opportunities in Westchester. Touring local businesses, youth are learning about ‘what’s out there’ and how they can become part of it. Juggling? Check! Synchronized acrobatics? Check! Barnum & Bailey—think again! It was the Abbott House ‘Circus of the Kids’ performance. More than 40 youngsters mastered the art of the flying trapeze, highjump rope and other big top stunts. Teaming up with the performers from Circus of the Kids, Abbott House suited up for a roaring good time. PHOTO: CIRCUS OF THE KIDS PHOTO: H&H PHOTOGRAPHERS Our annual fall fundraiser invited friends and supporters to discover the innocence and fun of being a “kid at heart”. Long-time friend and author DeLauné Michel was honored with the Theodore A. Wilson Award for Outstanding Community Service for her “Spoken Interludes: Next” program, which inspires young people (including youth in foster care at Abbott House) to awaken their imaginations with the power of creative writing. The Rivertown Heroes were presented with the Caring Hearts Award for their ongoing support and advocacy of Abbott House. For more than 10 years, the Rivertown Heroes have broken down the wall between children in foster care and those who are not. And like the partnership that has blossomed between us, so will the tree we planted in their honor at the Hudson Scenic Park at the Irvington waterfront. There is no need to remind the consumers in our SPDD program of the importance of community service. With bake sales constantly underway, our resident bakers sell their goods for a profit which is then donated to area charities like the local Humane Society and Yonkers Animal Shelter.
