Father Joe’s Week:
I got back from retreat on Friday morning, to learn that
Teresa Martin had passed away. I called her family,
then had Mass and Holy Hour. I was able to get to visit
parishioners in Strong and Unity that evening…
Saturday morning I went to Teresa’s home to help the
family plan her funeral. They were all ready to help and
had people in line to take part. Teresa would be
proud…Saturday after Mass I went to Stone’s
Countryside in Churchville for supper—to use up a gift
certificate. It was a good meal; crowded, though…At the
9am on Sunday, John LaPierre told me that his mom,
Viola, had died. She lived at Beikirch, and had just
celebrated her 100th birthday with a big family
celebration. He got back in touch later that day to fix
the date and time for her Memorial Mass…Sunday I
had Mass at Newman, then Fr. Jesus was here for the
1pm Mass. He is going on Sabbatical and will not be
back until January, and then he will probably have to
cover an additional Mass at Marion in Wayne County.
It looks like I will be taking all our 1pm Masses…
Saturday evening I went to Pizza Hut for supper, and
helped a couple of our young migrant workers order a
pizza. Then I went to Hilton for Theresa Martin’s wake.
It was family only—of course that filled the funeral
home! It was a joy to pray with them…Monday we had
Theresa’s funeral—a wonderful celebration of her 94
years. Thanks to her family for doing such a great job
planning the service and joining in ministry at the
Mass. After the cemetery service I went to Dr. Smith to
get my eyes checked—all is good. Then I went to do a
baptismal preparation…Tuesday was my birthday so
the morning Mass group sang “Happy Birthday” as a
closing hymn for the mass. I met with John LaPierre to
finish planning for Viola’s memorial, then with Margot
VanEtten from Newman, and then with the whole
regional planning group. This is a good meeting where
we work on planning for how we can minister more
effectively in our area. Then I went to Mass at the
Landing (another “Happy Birthday”). What a joy it is to
say Mass there—thanks especially to the staff and to
our own parishioners who come and help…I went to
Viola’s wake at Fowlers, then Mary Lynne Turner took
me to a birthday supper at the Smokehouse. I liked
their BBQ chicken, their sauce, and their fries. I’ll go
back to try the pulled pork. Thanks Mary Lynne…
Wednesday we had Viola’s Memorial Mass, and her
family put together a fitting celebration and a lovely
program. After the funeral our staff took me out to a
birthday lunch at the StoneYard. It was a chance to get
another glass of their rye porter. They didn’t sing,
thank God. Thanks for the lunch and company—we
have lots of laughs…God bless and have a good week!

Human Concerns Ministry
Winter Boots Needed
St. Joseph’s House, which
provides services to homeless men, has advised the
Human Concerns Ministry that they are seeking winter
boots for their participants. The boots can be new or
gently used. As you sort through your winter clothing,
could you please look for boots that you may no longer
be using? They are looking for men’s sizes, starting at
size 9.
The Human Concerns Ministry will have a box
available in the church for your contributions during
the month of October. Please tie the boots together or
bag them so that the pairs do not become separated.
Thank you for your generosity!
Catholic Ministries Appeal Mailing
This year the Diocesan CMA mailing contained a
letter, return envelope & a full-color information piece.
We’ve had a number of calls at the Parish Office
asking us what our Parish Number is.
Many
parishioners know that this number helps the CMA
office credit the correct parish with the donor and
amount pledged.
The Parish Number is on the pledge portion located
at the bottom of the letter. Please tear-off that
bottom portion of the letter (w hich contain s
your name, address, parish and parish number), fill in
the amount pledging, and mail it along with your check
in the return envelope.
If you have already discarded the letter, our Parish
Number is 215, and please write “Nativity, Brockport”
where it asks for Church. Many thanks for your
attention in this matter.

October is the month of the Rosary.
Our Blessed
Mother has appeared many times on Earth to encourage us
to pray the Rosary.
The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with
the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries
of the Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each
mystery, is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail
Mary is the angel's words announcing Christ's birth and
Elizabeth's greeting to Mary. St. Pius V officially added the
second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary
center on the events of Christ's life. There are four sets of
Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and––added by Pope
John Paul II in 2002––the Luminous.
The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into
restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery.
The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the
silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary
can be said privately or with a group.
The Five Joyful Mysteries are traditionally prayed
on the Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays of Advent: The
Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity, The Presentation
in the Temple, & The Finding in the Temple.
The Five Sorrowful Mysteries are traditionally
prayed on the Tuesday, Friday, and Sundays of Lent: The
Agony in the Garden, The Scourging at the Pillar, The
Crowning with Thorns, The Carrying of the Cross, & The
Crucifixion and Death.
The Five Glorious Mysteries are traditionally prayed
on the Wednesday and Sundays outside of Lent and Advent:
The Resurrection, The Ascension, The Descent of the Holy
Spirit, The Assumption, & The Coronation of Mary.
The Five Luminous Mysteries are traditionally
prayed on Thursdays: The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan,
The Wedding Feast at Cana, Jesus' Proclamation of the
Coming of the Kingdom of God, The Transfiguration, & The
Institution of the Eucharist.
