Chairman’s message
End of an Era
Just a few short months after I joined the Chamber
in 2000, Tammy Bracewell was promoted to
President & CEO of The Greater Brandon Chamber
of Commerce. She had already served the
organization for over a decade in numerous different
positions. For the next 13 years, she showed
amazing leadership and guided our organization
through a new path of growth that benefited all of
Darren Denington
our members. She has been the driving force for
Chairman
some major accomplishments such as becoming
a two time - five star accredited Chamber. She also spearheaded the
implementation of many other incredible programs, moved us into our
beautiful new location, built an amazing staff and helped so many of us
to grow our businesses. To me, the greatest attribute was how much
she cares about every individual member. I have seen, firsthand, the
great lengths she goes to in order to help any member at any time.
After this incredible run of inspiring leadership, Tammy has decided to
step aside as President & CEO to find the life balance that each of us are
always looking for. If you know Tammy, you know she has a wonderful
family and she wants the flexibility to work offsite and spend time with
her beautiful grandchildren.
The great news is that Tammy will continue to be a very big part of the
Chamber team and will continue to work on special projects to ensure
that we stay on the great path she has led us down for such a long time.
I would like to personally thank Tammy for everything that she has done
for the Chamber and our Community. To show our appreciation, we are
having a “Celebration of Tammy” party at the Chamber on Friday, June
14th at 4pm.
“Thank You” to Sencommunications, Inc. for hosting May’s Business After
Hours! Paul Senory and company personnel are presented a plaque of
appreciation by May’s Ambassador of the Month Paul Sabatier-Smith and
Chamber Board Member Rick Rios.
“Thank You” to Genghis Grill for hosting May’s Networking at Noon at
the Chamber! Marc Murray and Nick Dorsch are presented a plaque of
appreciation by Chamber Board member Chris Myers and May’s Ambassador
of the Month Paul Sabatier-Smith.
Also in 2000, we had another shining star join the Chamber team.
During her thirteen years, she has been our voice as a business
advocate, led so many new programs such as BizEd, Leads Groups and
Peer Groups. She has helped take the Expo and Small Business Gala to
new heights and is a major part of our incredible Leadership Brandon
program. These accomplishments are only a small sample of all the
wonderful things she has done for our members.
I am very pleased to announce that, as of June 7th, Laura Simpson
will be the Interim President & CEO of The Greater Brandon Chamber of
Commerce.
Let’s all support both Laura and Tammy in their new roles. We hope to
see you at Tammy’s celebration and I hope you “Always do business
with Chamber members.”

“I NEED A VACATION!”
Special Feature
‘Breaking’ From Work Beneficial to Productivity
Who needs a vacation? Wait, perhaps that didn’t sink in… WHO NEEDS A VACATION??!! Now that
we have your attention, allow us to ask a simple -- yet perhaps not necessarily easy to answer -question: When was the last time that you took time away from your business? How about we back
up a step? When is the last time that you even thought about taking time away from your business?
If you’re like a lot of business owners and many employees, vacation eludes you. It’s likely that you’d
certainly enjoy time away from processes and procedures tying you to your job. The problem is that
work gets in the way. Of course, we know the challenges that come with running a business. We
know that there are times that there’s just no way around having ‘all hands on deck.’ But, understanding how important it is to commit to vacations can be just as critical to your company’s bottom
line as cash flow and revenue.
Vacations afford us all kinds of terrific job-related benefits. They help relieve stress, increase creativity, avoid burnout, promote health, improve overall well-being and strengthen bonds. Taking a healthy
amount of time away from daily life stresses can afford you time to recharge and return to work
rejuvenated, and in position to better manage daily opportunities and challenges.
To help you further understand how important vacations are, we asked fellow Chamber members to
detail the many benefits of “Me Time!”
CALLED TO ACTION
MAGGIE C. SABATIER-SMITH, SPEAKER,
COACH, CATALYST FOR CHANGE
Why do some people fall into a must-work
rut? What harm can be done by not taking
lasting breaks from work?
As a Leadership Coach, I often see folks
trapped in an endless cycle of reactive behavior. Many suffer from: 1) a poorly defined
“Why?” Those that take the time to create a
personal life plan – a vision of what matters
most, have a standard to measure against. I’ve
never met anyone who strategically planned to
be a workaholic. I read somewhere, “You can’t
say no until you’ve already said yes.” Say
yes to what you want in life and the temptation to a must-work mentality will be simply
that, a temptation and not a reality 2) a poorly
defined business plan. Strategic leaders plan
for success and build in contingency plans
for the tough times. They build their plan
with their personal “why” in mind 3) poorly
defined client expectations. Clients need to
trust the quality of work as well as the timing
of delivery. Without a standard, we are often
trapped into last-minute changes that may
soon become the standard clients expect.
Change your perspective; change your results.
When we take time out for breaks we allow our
body, mind and spirit to refuel. Without it, we
put our health, the health of our relationships
and business/career at risk.
Moving YOU up the priority list includes planning
pockets of time to refresh, renew and restore
your body, mind and spirit. Why not YOU? Moving your business/career/clients up the priority
list may involve taking “personal development”
vacations. Investing in your personal development yields a guaranteed return. Reignite the
fire of your client offerings! Spiritual renewal is
one of my favorite time-out goals. Whether you
participate in a planned retreat or just simply
take time to be alone with God, take the time.
Your faith matters; know what you believe. It’s
a time to listen and become clearer on your life
purpose. I often say, “Someone is waiting for
you to show up in the fullness of your calling.”
Take time to seek that inner wisdom.
What types of vacations are best to ensure that
one returns to the workplace feeling refreshed,
rejuvenated and ready to conquer any challenge?
Best vacation: the one you need at that time.
Whether it be a three week “holiday” as my
cousin who lives in England often takes, or
just a day off… you can accomplish the same
objective. The next best: debt-free! The stress of
paying it off may very well negate the benefits.
Like the one you’re with! Make sure to travel with
someone you like, who has similar activities in
mind. A spontaneous vacation for you may be extremely stressful for your travel companion. Clear
up expectations before you travel so that everyone
can enjoy their time away. Vacations can take you
away geographically or simply away from day-today work environment. I remember a three-day
weekend where my husband and I rented a condo
30 minutes away. Our vacation started in our
driveway when Paul put on his straw hat – a vacation symbol for us and one of the best time-outs
we’ve ever had. Vacations begin in your mind. You
choose to have a good time and you plan around
that. You anticipate what must be covered in your
absence and communicate clearly to all involved.
You take as much time as you need to unwind
from the day-to-day and give yourself permission
to enjoy it. Final tip: just do it!

Why do some people fall into a must-work rut?
What harm can be done by not taking lasting
breaks from work?
Personally, I am a control freak and have found that
most business owners have the same mindset. We
believe that if we don’t work then something might
not get done or we can lose potential business.
That makes it really hard to even take a weekend
day off, much less a longer planned vacation.
However, working that many hours causes us to be
overwhelmed and tired and will set us up to make
mistakes or miss things that ordinarily would be
second nature. Burn out is inevitable and we are
forced to step away. Planned breaks help to allow
your mind and body to slow down so you can
work more efficiently and not completely burn out.

Locally Owned & Operated for 40 Years
When is the right time for people to plan
vacations? What should be the goal of these
vacations?
Simple answer: the right time to plan vacations
is before you need them. You schedule them
in your calendar just as you would any other
important appointment. On the other hand,
spur-of-the-moment time-outs can bring an
unexpected playful element into your life.

“The first responsibility of a leader is to
define reality. The last is to say Thank
You. In between, the leader is a servant.”
--- Max DePree
The quote above pretty much sums up what inspired my decision to
step down as your President & CEO to assume a different role with the
Chamber that I love so dearly. I have been blessed to have worked for
this great organization for the past 24 years -- literally almost half of
Tammy C. Bracewell my life -- and I am thankful that I am able to continue to contribute to
it while also taking some much needed time with my family.
President & CEO
The decision was not an easy one, but, to be quite honest, it feels good now that I have made
it. This is the best of both worlds for me as I will be able to take a step back to enjoy my
grandchildren, but will still remain responsible for special projects for the Chamber. Among
those special projects is the management of FACP (Florida Association of Chamber
Professionals), which is a statewide entity that the Brandon Chamber has led for the past three
years. In addition, I will continue to work on the Chamber’s publications, which takes my
career here full circle, as the first position I held with the Chamber in 1989 was the Communications Manager responsible for publications.
I am grateful to the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors for understanding my
desire to make this change and, more importantly, for their willingness to allow me to
determine my level of continued involvement.
Thank you to each and every one of you for the support that you have given to me and I thank
you in advance for the continued support that I know you will give to Laura Simpson, as she
assumes the the role of President & CEO.

When is the right time for people to plan vacations?
What should be the goal of these vacations?
In order to get better rates, the farther out you plan the
better – at least a year in advance. Never plan at the last
minute. The goal should be to relax and focus on the
things that are most important in life – your family, not
your job.
What types of vacations are best to ensure that one
returns to the workplace feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to conquer any challenge?
A vacation where you can truly relax and unplug. Turn
off the phone, internet, Facebook, text messages…..
have a plan in place to know where you will stay, eat,
and play so you don’t have to be concerned the entire
vacation about “what do we do next” or “how much
more money is this going to cost?” Be prepared and
educated before you leave!

One of the most important roles that The Greater Brandon Chamber of
Commerce plays for its members is following public policy that could have
an impact on local business and residents. This includes local issues that are
being addressed by the County Commission and state related issues being
addressed by the Florida Legislature. As a resident of Brandon you need to
keep up to date on issues that could impact our community. One great way to
do that is to become a member of the Chamber’s Government and Economic
Advisory Council. This group meets once a month and has a number of
excellent guest speakers including elected officials.
The Council recently held its Chamber’s Legislative Wrap-Up luncheon on
Wednesday, May 29 at the Embassy Suites-Tampa/Brandon. State Senator
Tom Lee, State Representative Jake Raburn, State Representative Dan
Raulerson and State Representative Ross Spano were all in attendance to
provide their insights and to share updates on session outcomes.
During the 2013 session, which came to a close on Friday, May 3, the Florida
Legislature passed a number of major reforms but also left a few major issues
unresolved. This session the Florida Legislature introduced 1,848 pieces of
legislation and passed 286 bills. Although the House and Senate could not
come to an agreement on two major issues, Medicaid expansion and pension
reform, they did successfully come together in agreement on ethics reform,
elections reform, economic development funding, and passed a $74 billion
state budget.
“This year’s session and budget were a huge win for our state,” reported
Representative Jake Rayburn. “With an emphasis on education and economic
development the future is bright. We were successful in passing legislation
that will open up opportunities for career and technical education in our state.
By placing more emphasis on career and technical education and industry
certifications, high school graduates can be ready for the job marketplace.
This will be a major boost for our state’s economy.”
The loss from organized retail crime is staggering! Industry
experts estimate national losses of up to $30 billion
annually. This year, Representative Spano passed HB
1173 Related to Organized Retail Theft, which will allow
prosecutors and law enforcement to better crack down on
organized retail theft.
“Having stronger options in charging and prosecuting
these operations will protect both businesses and the consumers who
ultimately pay for this loss,” Representative Spano said.
Representative Dan Raulerson with support from Senator Tom Lee
successfully passed House Bill 183, which aims to help encourage
redevelopment in blighted areas in our community.
“We were fortunate to work with Senator Lee on this initiative in
Tallahassee and to have his support on this important piece of
legislation,” said Representative Raulerson. “Our hope is that local
governments, together with local businesses, will use this bill to work
with developers and invest in making community redevelopment areas
economically stronger and more beautiful regions in our community.”
Events such as these are great opportunities to come learn about the
activities at the State and local level as well as how these issues will
impact the Greater Brandon Community and more importantly you as a
business owner, employer, or employee.
Please mark your calendar for the next scheduled Council meeting:
Monday, June 10, 2013 (4:00 p.m. at GBCC, 330 Pauls Dr., Brandon).
Or to receive an invite to the next Council meeting, please contact Laura
Simpson at (813) 689-1221, Ext. 8821 or email her at

Ambassador of the month
Name: Robert L. Young
Title & Company: Associate Tax and Retirement
Solutions DBA The Business Barons
How long have you been a Chamber Ambassador? What do you enjoy most
from serving as an Ambassador and why? I joined the GBCC in January 2013
and became a Chamber Ambassador that month. I enjoy the opportunities
being an Ambassador offers to be active and involved in the local business
community.
What is unique and/or interesting about your
business? The uniqueness of The Business
Barons is that it provides a framework for my
three lines of business. Legal Shield, Lyoness
cashbackcard, and Economic Recovery Group.
I work with small to medium size enterprises offering multiple
technological platforms to promote growth, retain clients, comply
with regulations, motivate employees, and enhance profits.
Who is the most influential person in your life and why? My first year of
teaching exposed me to three people who have influenced my life. One was a
mentor and fellow teacher who was truly a talented educator who taught me
that there are no bad kids but there are inappropriate responses. Second is
an ancient Zen statement; when the student is ready, the teacher will appear
Third is Mr. Rodgers whose underlying belief is that children long to be loved,
I have found that these three statements not only apply to education, but to all
of life’s endeavors.
What are your business challenges & successes? The excitement
of being an entrepreneur is the challenges. My most formidable
challenges are motivation and persistence. Success is achieved by
doing just a little bite each and every day that adds up over time. The
challenge is doing something to achieve your goals on a daily basis.
What are your interests and hobbies? I enjoy living history, involvement in
politics, interior design, and landscaping.
What is your favorite quote? Be a Baron, grow your business, live your
dream today.

Origination Company specializing in all residential loan

Years with Company: 8
What is unique or special about your business and
the products and services you offer? It’s not so
much the products that we offer as being special because mortgages and the companies that offer them
are so many. Yet it’s the approach in which we offer
them. I’m very opposed to a call center type mortgage
company that is required to close leads handed to
them. I’ve found that rarely is it what’s best for the
borrower. We want to sit down with them, spend
some time and educate the borrower and give a full
analytical approach of what they want and then what’s
the best fit for them as a loan. If this is accomplished
then they are better situated in their financial journey.
We just helped a couple in Valrico refinance their
mortgage strategy to help them save $150 a month
and pay their loan off in less than 15 years. The kicker
is they are not even 40 yet! For more information
about available services, please attend the Real Estate

Our advisory board has strong roots in our local
community. Our officers are also well connected
in the area and are uniquely able to assist clients’

We are especially qualified to serve the unique needs

What markets do you serve? Currently just the whole
state of Florida
What are your business challenges and successes? Challenges are retooling, if you will, the majority
outlook of the loan advisor and the industry itself
because of the real estate meltdown. Our success
also comes from afore mentioned and our philosophy in doing just that – to educate and show people
we really do care because of locality with them and
the time we can spend with each unique borrower in
meeting their mortgage needs.
What is your involvement with the Chamber and/or
other organizations? Green House Mortgage only
joined the Chamber in January 2013 as a Platinum
Member. We’ve been able to co-sponsor one of the
Coffee Clubs and attend various events so far. However, it is the goal to become more and more involved
within the Brandon Community as time goes on so
people become familiar with who we are and what
we stand for. Also in originating loans in the Brandon
area we are able to get local title companies and
insurance companies with the chamber involved as
well. So, it really becomes a win/win scenario for all
of us and this is where true growth in our community
starts to blossom.
How did you get started in your current career? I
knew a few friends and acquaintances of mine who
were loan consultants. So I got started with them and
a company in 2003 that no longer exists. From there,
the rest as they say is history.
David E. Brown
Senior Vice President

What advice would you give to someone
starting out in your field? I would tell them
to become a true student of their role in this
industry. A sponge if you will. I see too many
people looking to join a company that hands
them leads and spoon feed. That’s not learning
how to really originate loans. Unfortunately,
when the melt down came in 2008, those were
the first to mass exodus. It is extremely crucial
to learn everything you can about this business
and then create balance. If one can do this then
they will be one of the few who obtains true
fulfillment - one who can weather any storm.
Ultimately I’d tell them to work for Green House
Mortgage because It Pays to Go Green.

One of the most powerful tools ever used by successful people is a peer networking group. A peer networking group can help focus special energy on
your efforts, in the form of additional knowledge, resources and contacts. Together, we know more and can focus more energy than any one of us alone.
With this in mind, we are inviting you to join a group of your peers as we launch
a CEO Peer Network Group , called EMPOWER!
EMPOWER! is a group of CEOs, across industries, who come together to disseminate information, share self-directed meetings (with the use of a professional facilitator) regarding like interests and business needs, identify Chamber
and community resources to work together, and strategize issues related to
your position — ultimately strengthening the entire executive leadership within
our immediate area.
This group is reserved for a CEO or Owner/President of your business, which
must be a member of The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce.
